201. Long range residual dipolar couplings: A tool for determining the configuration of small molecules

Abstract

Together with the NOE and the J-coupling, the one-bond Residual Dipolar Coupling (RDC) that reports on the three dimensional orientation of an internuclear vector in the moleculear frame plays an important role in the conformation and configuration analysis of small molecules in solution by NMR. When the molecule has few C-H bonds or too many bonds are in parallel, the available RDCs may not suffice for obtaining the alignment tensor used for structure elucidation. Long range RDCs that connect nuclei over multiple bonds are normally not parallel to the single bonds and therefore complement the one-bond RDCs. Herein we present a method for extracting the long range RDC of a chosen proton or group of protons to all remotely connected carbons, including non-protonated carbons, to complement the other NMR parameters. Using alignment tensors fitted directly to the total long range couplings (T=J+D), an easy and straightforward analysis of both the long range and one-bond RDCs has been performed on the natural product strychnine. Abstract

This study reports the knowledge and perceptions of the people with regard to cause and transmission of chronic forms of lymphatic filariasis (LF) and its elimination programme during mass drug administration (MDA) under the programme to eliminate LF in an urban area of Orissa, India. The paper is based on both quantitative and qualitative surveys undertaken before and after the first MDA among different socio-economic strata of the urban area. The data revealed that the urban residents are aware of the chronic forms of LF and also felt that LF is a problem in their area. But most of them do not know the role of mosquitoes in the transmission of the disease. A few people explained the association between LF and hydrocele, and the role of mosquitoes. In the present study, it is observed that poor knowledge about LF is highly influenced by socioeconomic conditions. People from lower economic category were least aware of the cause of both lymphoedema and hydrocele. However, knowledge in some issues with regards to the disease and the awareness on MDA have increased significantly after MDA.

244. Ancient iron making process at Naikund, Vidarbha region of India: a thermochemical analysis of megalithic iron smelting.

Abstract

This study systematically demonstrates the ancient iron-making process in one of the earliest ironsmelting sites in India, and Naikund, Vidarbha region, dating as far back as 900 BC. During the process, the maximum temperature attained in the Naikund furnace was estimated to be ~1150-1250°C in the reaction zones where solid-state reduction of iron followed by separation of the low-melting slag phase and metallic iron were predominant. The low melting point of the slag phase is possibly due to the addition of sand or silica and limestone in the furnace during the iron-making process. Furthermore, mass balance studies performed using the Rist diagram superimposed with the Fe-C-O stability diagram revealed that the minimum charcoal rate was about 1900 kg/tonnes of iron produced. It can be anticipated that the porous, semi-solid metallic iron is hammered to produce various objects used for hunting and agriculture. The thermochemical analysis of one of the earliest iron-smelting sites in India provides evidence of the ancient iron-making processes in the country. Abstract

p53 aberrations are early events in the pathogenesis of betel- and tobacco-related oral malignancies. Accumulation of p53 protein in oral lesions may elicit a humoral immune response against p53 protein in these patients. p53 antibodies (Abs) were analyzed in 183 sera obtained from patients with premalignant or malignant oral lesions and normal individuals by enzyme-linked immunoassay using recombinant p53 protein as antigen. These results were correlated with accumulation of p53 protein in patients' matched oral tissue specimens. Circulating p53 Abs were observed in 24 of 70 (34%) cancer patients and 15 of 50 (30%) patients with premalignant oral lesions. p53 Abs showed a significant association with increase in tumor size and dedifferentiation of tumors, factors indicative of poor prognosis. Expression of p53 protein was analyzed in 43 matched oral lesions (18 premalignant and 25 malignant cases). All the p53-seropositive patients (7 leukoplakia and 11 squamous cell carcinoma) showed elevated levels of p53 protein in matched oral lesions. However, the total number of patients seropositive for p53 Abs was lesser than that of patients exhibiting p53 protein accumulation in oral lesions. Four of the 63 normal healthy individuals who were heavy consumers of tobacco (smoking/chewing) and betel were found to be positive for p53 Abs. Detection of circulating p53 Abs in patients with premalignant oral lesions suggests that humoral immune response against p53 protein is an early event in oral oncogenesis and may be a surrogate marker for both p53 alteration and preclinical cancer.

Abstract

The experiment was conducted to investigate the growth performance and feed conversion efficiency of crossbred heifer at different age level in Government Dairy Farm in Bogra, Bangladesh. Twelve female crossbred heifers were equally distributed (n=3) into four groups [Group A: (7±2 months), B: (12±2 months), C: (15±2 months) and D: (20±2 months)] according to age and fed concentrate mix, rice straw and Napier grass at the rate of 2% of live weight. Napier grass and rice straw were offered at the ratio of 1:1. The concentrate mixture was provided at the rate of 1% of their body weight. It was found that dry matter content was higher in concentrate mix and rice straw and lower in Napier grass. Organic matter content was higher in Napier grass than that of concentrate and rice straw. Crude fiber concentration was higher in rice straw than that of concentrate and Napier grass. Intake of dry matter and organic matter differed significantly among the treatment groups. Crude protein intake was higher in C group heifer than other groups. Intake of crude fiber was higher in C group followed by B, D and A group. The final live weight was higher in D group than C, B and A group. Unit feed dry matter intake was higher with the advancement of age, being lowest in younger group. The heifers of D group showed higher value of feed conversion efficiency followed by C, B and A group respectively and concluded 20 ± 2 months of heifer is more economical than the other ages.
