Abstract

Three-dimensional eddy current distributions in cold crucibles are analyzed by using an integro-differential method. The electromagnetic force is calculated from the obtained eddy current distributions. In this paper, computations of eddy current and levitation force of the molten metal in some cold crucible models are performed, and the influences of coil position, the number of segments of the crucible, frequency of the coil current and gap length between the segments on the levitation force are discussed. Furthermore, an experimenta verification is presented.

Abstract

In circular colliders, as well as in damping rings and synchrotron radiation light sources, beam halo is one of the critical issues limiting the performance as well as potentially causing component damage and activation. It is imperative to clearly understand the mechanisms that lead to halo formation and to test the available theoretical models. Elastic beam-gas scattering can drive particles to large oscillation amplitudes and be a potential source of beam halo. In this paper, numerical estimation and Monte Carlo simulations of this process at the ATF of KEK are presented. Experimental measurements of beam halo in the ATF2 beam line using a diamond sensor detector are also described, which clearly demonstrates the influence of the beam-gas scattering process on the transverse halo distribution.

Abstract

Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) have been widely used as a blood access route for total parenteral nutrition (TPN) in recent years. However, there have been few reports that evaluated the usefulness of PICC for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In this study, we compared the clinical courses in patients with IBD who received TPN during their hospitalization by conventional central venous catheters (CVC) and PICC.A total of 137 IBD patients were enrolled. The CVC group and the PICC group included 56 and 81 patients, respectively. The clinical courses in both groups were compared retrospectively.As a complication of the puncture, pneumothorax occurred in two patients (3.6%) in the CVC group, but in none (0%) in the PICC group. The PICC group had significantly higher rates of achieving the scheduled TPN without removing the catheter, lower rates of catheter-related blood stream infection (CRBSI) and longer periods without CRBSI than the CVC group.PICC might be more useful than CVC in terms of safety and the ability to deliver scheduled TPN for IBD patients.

Abstract

We have investigated the trapped-held characteristics of a rectangular-shaped Gd-Ba-Cu-O bulk (33 × 33 × 15 mm$^3$) magnetized by pulsed-field magnetization (PFM) using split- and solenoid-type coils. A soft iron yoke was set below the bulk for the solenoid coil and two yokes are inserted in the bores of the split coil. The maximum trapped held B$_{Zmax}$ at the center of the bulk surface was 1.73 T at 40 K in the case of the solenoid coil, with a distorted profile. On the other hand B$_{Zmax}$ was enhanced to 3.05 T at 40 K for the split coil with two yokes for which a symmetric trapped-held profile was observed. The behavior of the magnetic flux motion indicated two conditions for the enhancement of the trapped held: that the magnetic flux intrudes easily into the bulk even for lower applied fields and then saturates with minimal flux creep. We have also investigated the electromagnetic and thermal properties of the bulk during PFM using a numerical simulation in which the magnetic flux tended to align along the z-axis due to the presence of the soft iron yoke. The use of the split coil with two yokes is effective in enhancing the trapped held for the rectangular-shaped bulks.

Abstract

We perform simulations for future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) observations of RX~J1713.7$-$3946, a young supernova remnant (SNR) and one of the brightest sources ever discovered in very-high-energy (VHE) gamma rays. Special attention is paid to explore possible spatial (anti-)correlations of gamma rays with emission at other wavelengths, in particular X-rays and CO/H{\sc i} emission. We present a series of simulated images of RX J1713.7$-$3946 for CTA based on a set of observationally motivated models for the gamma-ray emission. In these models, VHE gamma rays produced by high-energy electrons are assumed to trace the non-thermal X-ray emission observed by {\it XMM-Newton}, whereas those originating from relativistic protons delineate the local gas distributions. The local atomic and molecular gas distributions are deduced by the NANTEN team from CO and H{\sc i} observations. Our primary goal is to show how one can distinguish the emission mechanism(s) of the gamma rays (i.e., hadronic vs leptonic, or a mixture of the two) through information provided by their spatial distribution, spectra, and time variation. This work is the first attempt to quantitatively evaluate the capabilities of CTA to achieve various proposed scientific goals by observing this important cosmic particle accelerator., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

Methotrexate (MTX)-induced intestinal mucosal injury in animals has been studied to understand how MTX can cause gastrointestinal disorders, but the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal disorders is still uncertain. We have attempted to reveal how dietary factors influence intestinal toxicity due to MTX. Mice were fed normal chow (NC) or a high-fat high-sucrose diet (HFHSD) before oral administration of MTX. While MTX significantly decreased the survival rates of mice fed HFHSD, the intestinal epithelial injury was detected. MTX excretion in the feces of mice fed HFHSD was reduced. Change of diets between NC and HFHSD influences the survival. The survival rates of the mice fed a high-sucrose diet or control diet were higher than those fed HFHSD. Higher survival rates were observed in mice fed a high-fat high-sucrose diet modified (HFHSD-M) in which casein was replaced by soybean-derived proteins. The survival rates of mice treated with vancomycin were lower than those administered neomycin. Microbiome and metabolome analyses on feces suggest a similarity of the intestinal environments of mice fed NC and HFHSD-M. HFHSD may modify MTX-induced toxicity in intestinal epithelia on account of an altered MTX distribution as a result of change in the intestinal environment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
