Abstract

The ΛN interaction is able to be studied with Λ hypernuclei. A missing mass spectroscopy with the (e, e′K+) reaction was developed and established at Jefferson Lab. The (e, e′K+) experiment achieved the best precision and accuracy in reaction spectroscopy of hypernuclei. In this article, we introduce the latest results of JLab E05-115 with a discussion of the ΛN charge symmetry breaking in p-shell hypernuclei. In addition, an analysis status of the nnΛ search experiment (JLab E12-17-003) is presented. An overview of one of future plans in which we aim to accurately measure the hypertriton binding energy (JLab C12-19-002) is also shown. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

204. Export of 134 Cs and 137 Cs in the Fukushima river systems at heavy rains by Typhoon Roke in September 2011

Abstract

At stations on the Natsui River and the Same River in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, effects of a heavy rain event on radiocesium export were studied after Typhoon Roke during 21–22 September 2011, six months after the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant accident. Radioactivity of 134Cs and 137Cs in river waters was 0.009–0.098 Bq L−1 in normal flow conditions during July–September 2011, but it increased to 0.85 Bq L−1 in high flow conditions because of heavy rains occurring with the typhoon. The particulate fractions of 134Cs and 137Cs were 21–56% of total radiocesium in the normal flow condition, but were close to 100% after the typhoon. These results indicate that the pulse input of radiocesium associated with suspended particles from land to coastal ocean occurred because of the heavy rain event. Export flux of 134Cs and 137Cs attributable to the heavy rain accounts for 30–50% of the annual radiocesium flux from inland to coastal ocean region in 2011. Results show that rain events are one factor contributing to the transport and dispersion of radiocesium in river watersheds and coastal marine environments.

Abstract

Beam helicity asymmetries in the ep → e K+Λ reaction have been measured at unprecedentedly low four-momentum transfers Q2 =0 .05 (GeV/c)2. At the Mainz Microtron (MAMI), the experiment was performed with a longitudinally polarized beam and an out-of-plane detection of the scattered electron. This experiment probed the associated helicity-dependent structure function dσLT /dΩc.m. K , which is sensitive to the details of resonances of the proton. The results were compared to models for kaon electroproduction using effective Lagrangians. The MAMI data is not supporting the Kaon-Maid isobar model, which uses strong longitudinal couplings of the virtual photon to nucleon resonances and predicts a strong peaking of the structure function at forward angles and low Q2. The data is also in disagreement with a Regge-plusresonance model that predicts the incorrect sign of the structure function. The combination of the MAMI results with data taken at higher four-momentum transfers measured at Jefferson Lab indicates a smooth transition in Q2 without significant changes of the interference pattern in the electroproduction process.

Abstract

The electronic and geometric properties of gas-phase exohedral C[sub 60]Na[sub N][sup -], C[sub 70]Na[sub N][sup -], and C[sub 60]Au[sub N][sup -] cluster anions are investigated. Time-of-flight mass spectrometry and photoelectron spectroscopy (PES) reveal complex-specific arrangements of the sodium and the gold atoms on the fullerene cage. The electron affinity of C[sub 60]Au[sub N] clearly shows even-odd alternation with the number of Au atoms, which suggests a "dry" structure where Au atoms aggregate as a cluster on the C[sub 60]. In contrast, C[sub 60]Na[sub N] and C[sub 70]Na[sub N] show a "wet" structure having the Na atoms packed into stable trimers on the surface. For C[sub 60]Na[sub N] (N=0 to 4), PES experiments at a high photodetachment energy (5.81 eV) allow us to deduce the net charge transferred from the sodium atoms to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of the fullerene. For larger C[sub 60]Na[sub N], moreover, a metallic transition is shown to occur at N∼13, and analysis of the adiabatic electron affinity variations allows the identification of the first magic sizes corresponding to electronic shell closure in the sodium layer. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

A systematic study on the ground state binding energy of hyperhydrogen 4 H measured at the Mainz Microtron MAMI is presented. The energy was deduced from the spectroscopy of mono-energetic pions from the two-body decays of hyperfragments, which were produced and stopped in a 9Be target. First data, taken in the year 2012 with a high resolution magnetic spectrometer, demonstrated an almost one order of magnitude higher precision than emulsion data, while being limited by systematic uncertainties. In 2014 an extended measurement campaign was performed with improved control over systematic effects, increasing the yield of hypernuclei and confirming the observation with two independent spectrometers and two targets of different thicknesses. The analysis of these data is in agreement with the previously published value for the 4 H binding energy as well as with a consistent re- analysis of the 2012 data. When compared to the 4 He binding energy from emulsion data, a large charge symmetry breaking effect in the A = 4 hypernuclear system is confirmed.

A newly developed method to determine indenter shape-independent Young's moduli of thin low-k films from a composite film/substrate nanoindentation response is reported. The newly developed method is able to explain/account for the observed difference in the scale of substrate effect sampled by Berkovich and cube corner indenters compared to earlier methods.
