In the present study which was aimed to see the effect of zinc on pentylenetetrazole induced convulsive threshold in rats we found that zinc sulfate 100 μg intracerebroventricularly) and pentylenetetrazole (50 mg/kg intraperitoneally) produced dose related seizure activity; however, pretreatment with zinc decreased the threshold, increased the severity, incidence of multiple seizures and total duration of pentylenetetrazole induced seizures. Diazepam (5 mg/kg intraperitoneally) pretreatment increased the threshold and lowered the incidence of convulsions in zinc induced seizures which further confirms that the convulsive effect of zinc is through inhibition of gamma aimino butyric acid.

Forty Cryptococcus neoformans strains isolated from cerebral spinal fluid specimens collected from 39 patients were included in the study. The MICs for fluconacole were determined by YNB macrodilution test, microdilution tests using both RPMI1640 and YNB medium and E-tests on solidified RPMI1640 medium, Casitone and YNB agar. In comparison with the reference macrodilution method NCCLS M27-P both the microdilution as well as the E-test techniques can be used for fluconacole susceptibility testing of Cr. neoformans.

A 57-year-old obese patient presented with a 5 month history of tender, indurated, erythematous plaques with superficial ulceration on the right shin. The lesions closely mimicked cellulitis but were unresponsive to antibiotics. Though the patient was not a known diabetic, on investigations she was found to be a diabetic. Histology confirmed the diagnosis of necrobiosis lipoidica. This acutely inflammed presentation of necrobiosis lipoidica is extremely rare.

One hundred and sixty-one beauticians and hairdressers (146 women and 15 men) were examined for the presence of hand dermatitis and those with hand eczema were patch tested with a battery of antigens standardised for beauticians. Forty-two (26.1%) subjects were found to have hand dermatitis and of these, in 31 (69.3%) the patch tests were positive; the following antigens elicited a positive response; paraphenylene diamine (35.5%), rubber antigens (22.6%), nickel (22.6%), shampoos (12.9%), ammonium thioglycollate (9.7%), ammonium persulphate (3.2%), henna mixture (3.2%) and detergents (6.5%). In addition, irritant reaction was seen in 7; in 5 patients it was to shampoos and in 2 to ammonium persulphate. Of the 8 patients who, on questioning, had a history of atopy, 7 (87.5%) had hand eczema, while 1 (12.5%) did not, and this difference was statistically significant (p < 0.001), suggesting that beauticians with a history of atopy were more likely to develop hand eczema.

Bullae of pemphigus vulgaris heal without scarring. We here report a patient of pemphigus vulgaris whose lesions healed with a one-month history of extensive flaccid bullae and uninfected erosions on the trunk and extremities along with superficial erosions in the oral mucosa. The clinical suspicion of pemphigus vulgaris was confirmed by histopathological and immunohistological examination. Pulse therapy with monthly parenteral dexamethasone and cyclophosphamide pulse was instituted. The cutaneous lesions on healing formed extensive keloidal scars despite high dose of monthly corticosteroid therapy.

Olmsted syndrome is characterised by mutilating palmoplantar keratoderma with peri-orificial hyperkeratosis. We report the case of an 8-year old boy who presented with severe keratoderma of the soles since birth and of the palms from the age of 3 years. At 3 years of age hyperkeratotic plaques appeared on the elbows and knees. The child developed keratotic lesions at the angle of the mouth 1 year later. The child had sparse thin easily pluckable hair. Light and scanning electron microscopic examination of the hair revealed several hair shaft abnormalities. Though the psychomotor development of the child was normal till 1 year of age, thereafter the keratoderma had largely restricted the child's mobility. There was no history of hyperhidrosis and no dental abnormality was detected. The lesions had been unresponsive to keratolytics and had recurred after surgical removal. The patient was started on oral retinoids and topical keratolytics and had partially responded in 2 months.

Several occupational hazards especially exposure to silica have been implicated as eliciting factors for the development of scleroderma-like disorders. We here report a case of manual stone-cutter who developed progressive scleroderma, interstitial lung disease and decreased oesophageal motility after several years of exposure to silica dust.

We report here development of hypoglycaemia in the convalescent phase of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) infection in mice by the induction of antigen-specific Ly1- 2+ T cells in the spleen which mediate hypoglycaemia through the generation of soluble T cell hypoglycaemic factor (TCHF). The TCHF acted in a dose-dependent manner and was found to be trypsin-sensitive and thermolabile. It was purified on Superose-12 high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) gel filtration column and purified protein migrated as a approximately 25-kD band on SDS-PAGE. The JEV-induced hypoglycaemia coincided with an increased circulating glucagon level, without any alterations in blood insulin and growth hormone concentrations. These effects were mimicked by TCHF. These results indicate that JEV-primed T lymphocytes mediate hypoglycaemia through the production of a soluble hypoglycaemic factor.

The toxicity of many chemicals depends on the physical conditions of the test environment, and any change or adjustment made to the tests can alter the results. Therefore it is important to establish the sensitivity of the test organism over a range of test conditions to determine when it is necessary to make adjustment and to what extent. In this study, we established the tolerance range of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans for pH, salinity and hardness using 24- (without food source) and 96-h (with food source) aquatic toxicity tests. The tests were performed in two media: K-medium and moderately hard reconstituted water (MHRW). C.elegans has high tolerance under these test conditions. In K-medium worms survived a pH range of 3.1 to 11.9 for 24 h and 3.2 to 11.8 for 96 h without significant (p > 0.05) lethality. In MHRW the pH range was 3. 4 to 11.9 for 24 h and 3.4 to 11.7 for 96 h. Salinity tolerance tests were approximated with NaCl and KCl individually. Up to 15.46 g/L NaCl and 11.51 g/L KCl were tolerated by C. elegans in K-medium without significant lethality (p> 0.05). In MHRW higher salt concentrations were tolerated; about 20.5 g/L NaCl and 18.85 g/L KCl did not show any adverse effect compared to control. Hardness tolerance was tested by adding NaHCO3. The nematode could tolerate 0. 236 to 0.246 g/L of NaHCO3. The high tolerance of C. elegans to these test conditions (pH, salinity, and hardness) allows more versatility than other organisms commonly used in aquatic toxicity tests. It also allows the monitoring of effluents and receiving waters from freshwater or estuarine sources without dilution or adjustment.

Apoptosis is a controlled form of cell death accompanied by distinct morphological and biochemical changes. In this study the nature of cytotoxicity induced by adriamycin (ADM) in rat thymocytes was evaluated. Morphological and biochemical changes characteristic of apoptosis were found to precede adriamycin-induced cell death. Our findings demonstrate the involvement of c-Myc, c-Jun, antioxidant enzymes CuZn superoxide dismutase and catalase, and perhaps poly ADP ribosylation in ADM-induced cell death.

A strategy is described for improved refolding and purification of recombinant human gamma interferon (rh-IFN gamma), which could warrant a higher yield and specific activity than reported previously. The optimal conditions of refolding are obtained by addition of a labilizing agent, L-arginine, in the refolding buffer. A 10-fold increase in the yield was observed with 0.5 M L-arginine, compared with renaturation in its absence. By varying renaturation parameters, the conditions that allow functional refolding of approximately 25-30% of the recombinant protein have been standardized. A simple process is also described for the purification of rh-IFN gamma. The purification involves a single-column chromatography on S-Sepharose, after refolding of rh-IFN gamma in arginine containing buffer. This procedure has consistently produced rh-IFN gamma having a purity of at least 97%, the rest being the aggregated form of gamma interferon. The purified protein is a dimer under non-denaturing conditions and has a specific activity of 2 x 10(8) IU mg-1 protein, as measured by viral cytopathic assay.

The incidence of cryptococcosis in patients with AIDS is significant. Predisposing factors, laboratory findings and outcome were assessed in 60 patients with cryptococcal infections of the central nervous system over a 17.5-year period (Jan. 1978-June 1995). Predisposing factors for cryptococcal infection were identified in 36 patients, with HIV infection being the commonest (18). Cryptococcal cultures were positive in all patients. India ink staining was positive in 48 patients and cryptococcal antigen was detected in 35 of 36 patients tested. Comparison of clinical and laboratory parameters between HIV-positive and HIV-negative patients showed that CSF cell response was poorer, culture of cryptococci from non-neural sites was more frequent and mortality was higher in the HIV-positive group. Although not statistically significant, concurrent systemic infections, especially tuberculosis, were more frequent in the HIV-positive group.

Tetracyclines have been used extensively for the management of moderately severe to severe acne. In this study we studied the effect of withdrawal of tetracycline and minocycline on the course of acne. Ninety seven clinically controlled patients of acne vulgaris who had earlier taken tetracycline (1G daily) or minocycline (100 mg daily) were followed up at 4 weekly intervals for a period of 12 weeks after stopping all anti-acne therapy. At each visit the acne lesion score (ALS) was calculated. It was found that in the group of 48 patients who had previously received tetracyclines, 25% continued to improve at 12 weeks while 16.7% had relapsed. In the group of 49 patients who had earlier taken minocycline, 69.4% continued to improve and none had relapsed at 12 weeks. Similarly, when the mean acne lesion score of the 2 groups was compared at 12 weeks, it was found that response persisted in the group of acne patients who had been treated previously with minocycline and not in the group treated with tetracyclines.

Monoclonal antibody (ML-30) directed against 65 kDa stress protein of mycobacteria, is shown to identify human cellular protein homologous with the groEL heat shock protein in many prokaryotes. Immunohistochemical survey of nervous tissue, both central and peripheral, from patients dying of various inflammatory, degenerative and neoplastic conditions and from experimental animals, using this antibody showed punctate granular staining of the cells to a variable degree. The astrocytes showed strong immunolabelling. The normal neurons and oligodendroglia stained variably, while abnormal neurons were darkly labelled. Ependymal cells showed apical granular positivity. The ubiquitinated inclusion bodies in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease were not recognised by the ML-30 antibody. In diseased and stressed nervous tissue from experimental animals, the expression of the ML-30 recognisable stress protein was variable. The epitope recognised by ML-30 was found stable in postmortem tissues collected up to 36 h after death and processed for paraffin sectioning, after fixation in formalin for many years. Enhanced expression of the human groEL stress protein homologue in mammalian nervous tissue following various forms of stress may play a role in modulating the extent of tissue damage by autoimmune mechanism because of its high immunogenic nature and constitutive presence in the cells.

Azadirachta indica (AI, Neem) was tested for analgesic potency in experimental pain models in mice. In the glacial acetic acid (GAA) induced writhing test, AI (10, 30 and 100 mg/kg) dose-dependently reduced both the incidence and the number of writhes. Similarly, AI, at the dose levels tested, also enhanced tail withdrawal latencies in the tail-flick test for nociception. In the interaction studies, pretreatment with the opioid antagonist, naloxone (1 mg/kg) and the central noradrenaline depleter, DSP-4 (50 mg/kg) attenuated AI analgesia by differential degrees in both experimental models, whereas, the serotonin synthesis inhibitor, PCPA (300 mg/kg) potentiated the same. These results suggest that both central and peripheral mechanisms and complex neural pathways, opioid and non-opioid, may be involved in AI induced analgesia.

A 37-year-old labourer developed longitudinally split dystrophic nail with blackish discolouration in the centre 5 months following blunt trauma to the right thumb nail. Six months later, a well defined exudative erythematous to violaceous nodule developed and this recurred inspite of repeated surgical interventions. Patient had large, firm to hard epitrochlear and axillary lymphadenopathy. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of malignant melanoma.

Population influx into urban areas like Delhi has encouraged mushrooming of numerous slums where about 30% population of the city is living. A survey was conducted in four resettlement colonies of Delhi. Of the 6,876 persons examined, 43 (6.25 per 1000) subjects were found to have clinical and histologic evidence of leprosy. Fifteen (35%) patients of neuritic leprosy, eight (19%) with tuberculoid leprosy, 12 (38%) of borderline tuberculoid, three (4%) each with borderline and borderline lepromatous and one (2%) each of lepromatous and indeterminate leprosy were diagnosed. The study revealed that 21% of the patients were less than 20 years of age.

Previous studies have proved that as the volume of the drug solution instilled into the eye is decreased, the fraction of the dose absorbed into the ocular tissue is increased and the adverse drug reactions lowered. The present study investigated the acute effects of different drop volumes (10 microliters, 20 microliters, 40 microliters, and 80 microliters) of pilocarpine nitrate (2%) on pupil diameter, heart rate, and adverse reaction profile, in 12 healthy human volunteers. The drop volumes of 10 microliters and 20 microliters produced more miosis and less side effects than 40 microliters and 80 microliters drop volumes. This may be due to more penetration of the drug into the ocular tissue and less drainage into the nasolacrimal system.

Past traumatic chronic subdural haematoma infected by Salmonella typhi is reported in a 34 years old lady. The isolate was resistant to chloramphenicol, ampicillin and co-trimoxazole. Treatment involved subdural drainage and course of ofloxacin. The patient ultimately recovered. Only eight such cases of Salmonella infected subdural haematoma have been reported in the world literature. The mode of infection is presumed to have been haematogenous.

In this study, viruria following Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) infection in mice has been shown to appear earlier in pregnant than in normal mice with proteinuria and haematuria. This was related to the production of splenic macrophage derived neutrophil chemotactic factor (MDF) following JEV infection. Intravenous inoculation of MDF in mice resulted in leakage of cells, proteins and erythrocytes in the urine as a result of altered capillary permeability. The isolation of virus from kidney did not correlate with the shedding of virus in the urine. The histological examination of sections of kidneys showed no morphological damage; however, ultrastructural degenerative changes in the mesangial cells were observed following JEV infection. These data suggest that JEV-induced macrophage derived factor regulates the leakage of proteins, erythrocytes and cells into the urine.

Microcephaly with mental retardation forms a distinct subgroup among mentally retarded individuals. The paucity of studies on the etiology of this condition in India made the investigators to study this population. It HTO aimed to study the demographic and clinical characteristics, and the etiologic pattern in children with microcepltaly and mental retardation The sample consisted of 82 children who were examined by detailed clinical assessment and a battery of investigations. A definite etiology could be found in 56% of children which have been grouped into prenatal embryonic, prenatal maternal/environmental, and birth and neonatal causes. Non-genetic causes were the most common. The prenatal etiology constituted nearly twice that of birth and neonatal causes. Majority of the etiologic factors were preventable. The role of socio-environmental factors has been discussed As a group, the neurological disorders were found to be the most commonly associated medical condition. Malnutrition, specially of severe degree, was significantly associated with this group compared to the general population. The study findings indicate that there is a significant place for prevention.

Pathomorphological features of 10 HIV positive individuals studied at autopsy and biopsy are described. Nine patients had evidence of neuro-AIDS and eight of them succumbed to various opportunistic infections. One surviving patient underwent a diagnostic lymph node biopsy which revealed tuberculous lymphadenopathy. Cryptococcal meningitis was the commonest CNS opportunistic infection, seen in five cases, with disseminated systemic cryptococcosis in two. The other opportunistic infections included toxoplasma encephalitis in two, with acanthamoeba infection in one patient. Pulmonary tuberculosis was noted in three patients while other bacterial infections such as meningococcal meningitis, pseudomonas septicaemia were observed in three and pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in one. One seropositive individual was clinically asymptomatic but succumbed to a road traffic accident. The brain in this case showed features of HIV associated early leucoencephalopathy. Bacterial infections caused by organisms other than Mycobacterium tuberculosis associated with AIDS are often underdiagnosed and should be considered, especially in developing countries. In cases of cryptococcal and tuberculous meningitis or multiple parasitic infections, the patients should be screened for associated HIV infection.

Fifty eight (16%) of the 362 patients, who reported to Dermatology and STD Department with symptoms pertaining to their genitourinary system were below 14 years of age. Fifty four (93.1%) of these children belonged to families of lower socio-economic strata. All the children were slum dwellers and none of them had studied beyond the third class. Syphilis was seen in 27.6%, gonorrhea in 24.1%, chancroid in 22.4%, candidiasis in 10.3%, condylomata acuminata in 6.9% and herpes genitalis in 6.9% of these children. The probable reasons for the increased prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases in children as ascertained by this study were sexual promiscuity and probably sexual assault.

A case of cerebral abscess caused by Fonsecaea pedrosoi is reported in a nonimmunocompromised 15-year-old boy. In the absence of a primary cutaneous lesion, this fungus was considered to be a primary neuropathogen. The fungus was cultured and characterized from the abscess material obtained at surgery. Prompt therapy using amphotericin B and 5-flucytosine helped in the successful recovery of this patient.

The vascular effects of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV)-stimulated splenic macrophage-derived neutrophil chemotactic factor (MDF) were evaluated in mice. Intraperitoneal injection of MDF in mice resulted in a rapid increase in capillary permeability in a dose-dependent manner as assessed by leakage of intravenously injected radiolabelled albumin ([125I]-albumin) or Evans blue dye. Intradermal inoculation of MDF in rabbits caused [51Cr]-labelled neutrophil emigration and accumulation into injected sites. Peak plasma leakage and neutrophil infiltration were observed at 1 h following MDF inoculation, and plasma leakage was restored by 2.5 h. The increase in capillary permeability was sensitive to pretreatment of mice with avil and ranitidine (H1 and H2 histamine receptor blockers, respectively), resulting in abrogation of the response; indomethacin, a prostaglandin synthetase inhibitor, did not have any effect.

The role of cytosolic Ca2+ concentration in neutrophils stimulated with macrophage derived neutrophil chemotactic factor (MDF) produced following Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) infection in mice was correlated with cell functions. MDF-induced Ca2+ influx from extracellular milieu and release from intracellular store resulted in rise of cytosolic Ca2+ in a dose-dependent manner and was independent of protein kinase C. Macrophages and B cells did not show cytosolic Ca2+ changes while T lymphocytes showed slight rise when stimulated with MDF. Neutrophil chemotaxis in the absence of Ca2+ was slightly different from that in presence of Ca2+. Pretreatment of neutrophils with 3,4,5-trimethoxy-benzoic acid-8-(diethylamine)-octylester (TMB-8) inhibited the chemotaxis. It was observed that superoxide production and degranulation by neutrophils after stimulation with MDF was not dependent on the presence of extracellular calcium, but stripping of intracellular calcium resulted in abrogation of neutrophil activation. Thus, mobilization of intracellular calcium seems to be necessary for neutrophil activation by MDF.

The effects of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) and JEV-induced macrophage derived neutrophil chemotactic factor (MDF) on respiratory burst and granule exocytosis in neutrophils were studied and were compared with N-formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine (FMLP). JEV-stimulated neutrophils released reactive oxygen metabolites with maximum activity between days 7 and 9. The response in mice was sensitive to anti-JEV-antisera treatment. Stimulation by MDF resulted in quick release of superoxide and granule enzymes from neutrophils upon both in-vivo and in-vitro stimulation in a dose dependent manner. The effect was abrogated by the MDF-specific antisera treatment. These responses were similar in kinetics and magnitude to those produced in response to FMLP. The respiratory burst elicited by MDF was abrogated by staurosporine, indicating that neutrophil activation and signal transduction by MDF and FMLP are dependent on protein kinase C.

In a consecutive series of 178 first contact patients hospitalisation was significantly related to greater distance travelled, low income, acute onset, short duration, past history of illness and history of substance abuse compared to those receiving outpatient disposition. Hospitalised manics and paranoid schizophrenics had higher BPRS scores while hospitalised non-paranoid schizophrenics had lower scores. There was a significant positive correlation between hospitalisation and BPRS items: grandiosity, excitement, elated mood, motor-hyperactivity and distractibility and negative correlation with somatic concern, anxiety, depressive mood and social incompetence. Stepwise multiple regression analysis found the combination of loss of functioning, social incompetence and grandiosity to best predict disposition decision.

In this study we have shown, for the first time, that Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) and a low molecular weight (10 kDa) macrophage-derived neutrophil chemotactic factor (MDF) produced following JEV infection in mice could cause an alteration in the permeability of the blood-brain barrier resulting in leakage of plasma protein bound Evans blue dye and radiolabelled erythrocytes in brain. The maximum leakage occurred at day 6 after intracerebral (i.c.) JEV infection and was sensitive to anti-JEV antisera. Further, MDF caused peak leakage of dye and radiolabelled erythrocytes at 1 h post inoculation with a decline thereafter. Complete restoration of the integrity of the blood-brain barrier occurred by the 4th hour. The extent of leakage was dose dependent and showed a direct correlation between the level of MDF, clinical sickness and virus titre in brain. Anti-MDF antisera protected the mice against the effects of MDF. These findings show that JEV-induced cytokine, MDF, alters the integrity of the blood-brain barrier and thus controls the cellular and plasma leakage into the CNS.

The mechanism of neutrophil leucocytosis in cases of Japanese encephalitis is not known. We here report that during Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) infection in mice the splenic macrophages secrete a chemotactic factor that attracts the neutrophils. The peak activity of macrophage derived factor (MDF) was observed on day 7 following infection. The MDF acted in a dose-dependent manner. This chemoattractant was purified by low pressure liquid chromatography and gave a single band of 10 kD on silver stained polyacrylamide gel. The MDF was found to be heat resistant and sensitive to prolonged incubation with proteases.

Effect of some histamine (HA) agonists and antagonists were assessed on electroshock (MES) convulsions in mice and rats. In mice, pretreatment with the HA precursor, l-histidine (100, 500 and 1000 mg/kg) precipitated seizures after a subthreshold (30 mA) stimulus. Both incidence (%) and tonic hind limb extensor phase (THE) were more than that in vehicle treated controls. The H1 blockers, pheniramine (25 mg/kg) and promethazine (25 mg/kg) both protected against (60 mA) MES and both incidence of convulsions and THE were reduced. A similar protective effect was not seen with either the H2 blocker, cimetidine (up to 200 mg/kg), or atropine (1 mg/kg). In rats, both the classical antihistamines blocked MES seizures, whereas, the H2-blocker, cimetidine, and atropine were, ineffective. Further, both H1 blockers were ineffective in antagonizing seizures induced by pentylenetetrazole, INH, caffeine or strychnine. These results are discussed in light of a possible HA-ergic regulation of experimental convulsions.

Depression of serum iron following Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) infection was observed in mice. The hypoferraemia was associated with the accumulation of iron in reticulo-endothelial cells in the spleen. Splenectomy (compared with sham-operation) prevented the depression in serum iron concentration after JEV infection. It also prevented the rise in levels of liver iron. The effect of JEV-stimulated, splenic macrophage-derived factor (MDF) was evaluated in causing hypoferraemia. MDF produced a rapid reduction in the serum iron levels with accumulation of iron in spleen. These observations suggest that MDF plays a key role in the regulation of iron metabolism during JEV infection.

A male patient with chronic paranoid schizophrenia developed delusions of substitution that were of abrupt onset and short duration. This coincided with the detection of diabetes mellitus. Over the next three years, despite being on continuous moderate dose neuroleptic treatment the re-emergence and resolution of delusions of substitution varied with the control of his diabetic status. A selective review of reports on organic contributors to delusions of substitution is presented. It is suggested that the abruptly appearing, short lasting delusions of substitution may be more likely to have a known organic contributor.

The effects of dopamine (DA) agonists and antagonists were investigated on indomethacin--and restraint stress (6 hr at RT)--induced gastric ulcer formation in rats. The DA-agonists, apomorphine and bromocryptine (both at 5 mg/kg) significantly attenuated the frequency and severity of gastric mucosal lesions in both experimental models. The DA-antagonist, haloperidol (0.05 and 1.0 mg/kg) aggravated the gastric ulcerogenesis of both indomethacin and stress, the effects with the lower dose being statistically significant. Haloperidol (0.05 mg/kg) also prevented the cytoprotective effects of apomorphine on indomethacin-ulcers. The atypical DA-antagonist, sulpiride (10 and 50 mg/kg), however, showed differential dose- and model-specific effects. Whereas, the lower dose attenuated indomethacin-ulcers, the higher dose (50 mg/kg) tended to aggravate this phenomenon. The trend of results were reversed in the restraint stress model. Indomethacin (1 mg/kg) aggravated stress-ulcers, an effect which was also appreciably neutralised by apomorphine (5 mg/kg) pretreatment. These results are discussed in light of possible prostaglandin-DA interactions during such experimental gastric pathology.

Oral administration of a new antidiabetic drug, glibenclamide, in a freshwater fish, Puntius conchonius lead to notable changes in the blood and tissue metabolite levels. The drug caused significant hypoglycaemia and glycogen deposition in liver and skeletal muscles. Besides, the treated fish evinced marked hypocholesteraemia, hypoaminoacidaemia, a fall in FFA and phospholipid concentrations while the cholesterol content increased in the liver and kidneys. Most conspicuous change in various metabolite levels occurred at 8 hrs posttreatment, and restitution of normal values was achieved 24-48 hrs later. The drug appears to be endowed with remarkable insulinotropic property even in fishes.

Thioureas react quantitatively with phenacyl bromide in ethanolic solution to give hydrobromides of aminothiazoles/iminodihydrothiazoles which can be titrated with sodium carbonate, Thymol Blue being used as indicator.
