alpha-Difluoromethylornithine is an effective inhibitor of polyamine biosynthesis because of its specificity for ornithine decarboxylase and the fact that its attachment to this enzyme is considered to be irreversible. We have found, however, that ornithine decarboxylase inactivated with this inhibitor in intact cells, as well as purified enzyme inactivated in vitro, both are capable of releasing this inhibitor and recovering enzyme activity. This reactivation can be initiated by freezing of inactivated enzyme samples in the presence of reducing agents at -7 or -20 degrees C and can be partially induced at 37 degrees C. These results reveal an unexpected lability of this enzyme-inhibitor complex that needs to be considered in future experimental designs.

Mammalian cells possess an inducible, active polyamine transport system that is stringently regulated by feedback controls. This study provides evidence that DH23b cells, which were initially selected from the rat hepatoma HTC line for overproduction of ornithine decarboxylase, demonstrate an abnormality in the regulation of polyamine transport. Exposure of these cells to micromolar levels of spermidine or spermine resulted in inhibition of protein synthesis and eventual cell lysis. These effects were not due to by-products of polyamine oxidation by serum oxidases as neither inhibition of protein synthesis nor cell lysis was mitigated by aminoguanidine, reduced glutathione, dithiothreitol, or catalase. Although the polyamine transport system in the DH23b cells has the same Km and Vmax as that in the parental HTC line, the variant cells accumulated abnormally high levels of both spermidine (8-times normal) and spermine (4-times normal). In the HTC line, however, transport of both polyamines as well as putrescine was feedback inhibited within approx. 3 h, while in the variant cells uptake was not diminished by 12 h and terminated only with cell lysis. The DH23b cells appear to lack the normal mechanism responsible for feedback control of active polyamine incorporation. This defect provided the opportunity to manipulate intracellular levels of spermidine from 30 to approx. 800% of normal, allowing the demonstration that cellular protein synthesis is as sensitive to spermidine levels as previous in-vitro studies had suggested.

Two mammalian cell lines, rat hepatoma (HTC) and Chinese hamster ovary (CHO), were fed 10 to 50 microM spermidine while changes were monitored in intracellular polyamine levels and spermidine uptake activity. Normal feedback control preventing excessive polyamine uptake was found to be completely blocked by the addition of inhibitors of protein synthesis at the time of polyamine exposure. Under these conditions the cells accumulated abnormally high, toxic concentrations of spermidine. Further, continuous protein synthesis was needed to maintain repression of polyamine transporter proteins that had been inhibited previously by normal or elevated intracellular polyamines. These results suggest that a major factor in the regulation of polyamine uptake is the rapid, reversible inactivation of existing polyamine carrier molecules by an unstable protein whose synthesis is stimulated by intracellular polyamines.

Objectives: to determine the correlation between a scale measuring the amount of care required by people in rest homes and two scales, the Booth scale and the composite scale which measure dependency. To examine the scales for retest reliability., Subjects: one hundred and twenty-five people aged 47 to 98 years, median age 84 years, living in seven rest homes in Dunedin., Method: subjects were assessed using the care, Booth and composite scales and the assessment repeated after four weeks., Results: the care scale test-retest reliability based on rank order correlates was 0.86. For the physical care items retest reliability was high but supervision and the management of behavioural problems showed poor retest reliability. Correlation between the care scale and the two dependency scales was only moderate (composite scale 0.64, Booth scale 0.55). Behavioural problems and the time for supervision were assessed on the care scale only and it was these components which accounted for most of the poor correlation between the care and dependency scales., Conclusion: the time required for the management of behavioural problems and supervision for some people in rest homes was considerable. Measurement of this was difficult and made assessment of individual residents in homes unreliable.

Ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) is extremely unstable in mammalian cells. This unusual characteristic facilitates rapid fluctuations in the activity of this enzyme in response to variations in its biosynthesis. Unfortunately, very little is known about the mechanism or regulation of this ODC-specific proteolytic pathway. This study describes the production and characterization of a variant of the rat hepatoma HTC cell line that is strikingly deficient in this pathway. This cell variant was induced by selection for growth in stepwise increasing concentrations (up to 10 mM) of the irreversible ODC inhibitor, alpha-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO). Resistance to this inhibitor appears to result from a combination of elevated (10X) ODC biosynthesis and inhibited degradation, producing greater than a 2000-fold increase in the level of ODC protein. In these variant cells (DH23b) inhibition of protein synthesis by cycloheximide did not result in rapid loss of enzyme activity or ODC protein determined by radioimmunoassay. Pulse-chase studies with [35S]methionine confirmed that this enzyme was not preferentially degraded, even when spermidine was added to the media. ODC purified from the variant cells was found to be identical to the control cell enzyme in size, isoelectric point, substrate binding kinetics, and sensitivity to the inhibitor DFMO. Also, as in the control cells, a major fraction of the ODC molecules extracted from DH23b cells was shown to be phosphorylated on a serine residue. The inability to detect physical or kinetic differences between the parent and the variant cell ODC suggests that the unusual stability of ODC in this cell is associated with a defect in a cellular mechanism for ODC-specific degradation.

Although much has been written about the debilitating effects of stress at work and courses designed to help staff understand and cope with the problem proliferate, many managers still have to be convinced that stress needs to be tackled--if only because it eats into profits. Occupational psychologist Jack Lamport Mitchell examines two new developments designed to raise stress awareness.

The purpose of this study was to: (a) determine the temporal pattern of expression of ornithine decarboxylase (ODC), an established marker of cells engaged in proliferation and differentiation, during repair of traumatized skeletal muscle, and (b) evaluate ODC as a biochemical marker for indexing the extent and rate of repair of traumatized skeletal muscle in response to therapeutic agents. Adult female Wistar rats weighing 240 to 280 grams were anesthetized and injected with 100 ul of 2% lidocaine into the right or left anterior tibialis muscle to induce a localized injury. The animals were treated 1 hour post-injection and every 12 hours for five minutes up to the time of sacrifice using ultrasonic irradiation at 1.5 watts/cm2, sham-irradiation, or no treatment. An analysis of variance for repeated measures and a Tukey's post hoc test were used to determine the significance of treatment effects. Animals irradiated with ultrasound demonstrated an accelerated pattern of change in ODC activity at 24 hours (P less than 0.001), 30 hours (P less than 0.003), and at 48 hours (P less than 0.002) compared to control and sham-irradiated animals at these time intervals. Irradiated animals also demonstrated less edema at 48 hours compared to sham-irradiated and control animals (P less than 0.003). These findings suggest that ODC is a useful biochemical marker for determining the extent and rate of tissue repair in traumatized skeletal muscle, and it provides a temporal and quantifiable parameter for evaluating the efficacy of therapeutic agents used to treat damaged skeletal muscle.

Myofibroblast-like cells containing smooth muscle actin have been identified in lung injury and repair. These cells differ from typical smooth muscle cells by architectural configuration, location and lack of smooth muscle myosin. Their progenitors are unknown. We hypothesized that these cells might have a developmental analog critical to lung morphogenesis. Lung tissue from developing and adult human lungs was studied using a highly specific monoclonal antibody directed against alpha smooth muscle actin (ASMA). Cells immunoreactive for ASMA (ASMA cells) were identified prenatally in the form of smooth muscle investing the developing vasculature and airway structures. ASMA was not expressed in undifferentiated mesenchymal cells at any prenatal stage. Late in development, ASMA cells within the lung acinus increased proportionally to terminal airway and vascular complexity. In the early postnatal period, the specific distribution of ASMA cells within inflated lung became clearer, and three populations were identified: (1) typical smooth muscle investing the large airways and blood vessels; (2) small clusters of cells within the acinus distributed at the tips of septa protruding into the alveolar duct; (3) individual cells within the alveolar sac sparsely distributed near the junctions of individual alveoli, frequently in association with small blood vessels. We conclude that ASMA cells appear only in developing small and large airways and pulmonary vessels and that they may play a critical role in branching morphogenesis during development.

Detailed information regarding the synthesis rates of individual protein components is important in understanding the assembly and dynamics of the cytoskeletal matrix of eukaryotic cells. As an approach to this topic, the dual isotope technique of Clark and Zak (J. Biol. Chem., 256:4863-4870, 1981), was employed to measure fractional synthesis rates (FSRs) in growing and quiescent cultures of MDCK epithelial cells. Cell protein was labeled to equilibrium with [14C]leucine over several days and then pulse-labeled for 4 hours with [3H]leucine. FSRs (as percent per hour) were calculated from the 3H/14C ratio of cell extracts or individual proteins separated by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and the 3H/14C ratio of free leucine in the medium. Synthesis of total cell protein rose from approximately 1.4%/hour in quiescent cells to 3.5%/hour in the growing cultures. The latter rate was sufficient to account for the rate of protein accumulation and a low level of turnover in the growing cultures. The FSR of the buffered-Triton soluble extract was higher and the cytoskeletal FSR significantly lower than that for total protein in quiescent monolayers. This difference, however, was not observed in growing cultures. A distinct pattern of differences was seen in the FSRs of individual cytoskeletal proteins in the quiescent cultures. Vimentin synthesis was significantly lower than that of the keratins and the keratin FSRs were not obviously matched in pairwise fashion. Unexpectedly, the FSRs of alpha- and beta-tubulin diverged in quiescent cells with alpha-tubulin turnover exceeding beta-tubulin. Likewise, components of the microfilament lattice showed unequal fractional synthesis rates, myosin and alpha-actinin being faster than actin. In addition, the FSR for globular actin exceeded that of the cytoskeletal associated form. The results suggest that metabolic coupling between individual cellular filament systems is not strict. The data are, however, consistent with models that predict that assembly of a subcellular structure influences the turnover of its component proteins.

Rapid, polyamine-induced degradation of mammalian ornithine decarboxylase (L-ornithine carboxy-lyase, EC 4.1.1.17) (ODC) is though to be controlled by the availability of a small, ODC-binding protein termed antizyme. In this study we have investigated the ability of antizyme to bind ODC protein in various altered physiological states. In particular, cold, NaCl, spermidine and deprivation of coenzyme and substrate enhance enzyme-antizyme complex formation and are all found to promote ODC homodimer dissociation. Conversely, conditions that maintain the active ODC homodimer state prevent antizyme binding and inactivation of ODC. Further, covalent modification of ODC near its active site by difluoromethylornithine or phosphate also increases its sensitivity to antizyme. These results suggest that the initial signal in ODC degradation may actually be a subtle conformational change in the enzyme that enables antizyme to bind to the enzyme and may subsequently facilitate its degradation.

The addition of putrescine, spermidine, or spermine, to cultures of Physarum polycephalum rapidly reduced the activity of ornithine decarboxylase, with maximal inhibition, 80-90%, occurring after 90 min. This response was not due to a decrease in enzyme molecules, but rather to the rapid conversion of the active enzyme to a stable, catalytically less active form. This response to exogenous polyamines was not accompanied by the appearance of a macromolecular inhibitor (antizyme) either free, or bound to the enzyme. Physiological levels of the polyamines were also found to inhibit this enzyme in vitro both competitively and non-competitively, and to promote complete yet reversible inactivation of this enzyme in the absence of reducing agents. The data suggest that the control of this enzyme by endogenous polyamine levels may be distinct from its response to exogenous polyamines.

Two forms of ornithine decarboxylase (L-ornithine carboxy-lyase, EC 4.1.1.17) can be isolated from crude plasmodial homogenates of Physarum polycephalum. Both forms catalyze the stoichiometric production of putrescine and CO2 from ornithine, yet they are distinguished by (a) a large difference in their affinity for coenzyme (apparent Km values of 0.13 and 33 muM); (b) a differential stability to extended dialysis of crude homogenates at 4 degrees C; and (c) the tendency of the low affinity form to polymerize when suspended in low ionic strength borate and phosphate buffers. These forms appear to be alternate states of a basic catalytic subunit in that (a) they both demonstrate monomer and dimer molecular forms of 80 000 and 160 000 daltons, respectively, depending on the buffer content; (b) they coelute from DEAE-Cellulose ion-exchange columns; and (c) they vary in activity in approximately equivalent yet opposite directions in response to factors which alter this organism's growth or metabolism. These data suggest that ornithine decarboxylase activity may be modulated by the control of the transition of this enzyme between the active and the relatively less active form.

A monoclonal antibody to rat hepatoma keratin demonstrates a close association of intermediate filaments with the nucleus in hepatoma cells. Immunoblot analysis of nuclear fractions and immunofluorescence of nuclei both prepared by standard procedures, indicate that intermediate filament proteins are consistently present. Sodium citrate extraction of these preparations diminishes the amount of intermediate filament proteins but does not totally remove the antigenic moieties, suggesting a tight association of intermediate filaments with nuclei. The results from both immunoblot analysis and immunofluorescent localization demonstrate the increased amount of keratins associated with hepatoma cell nuclei.

Cold sterilization of gutta-percha cones was accomplished by exposing them to formocresol vapors for 16 hours. The data obtained from this in vitro study indicate that gaseous sterilization with formocresol vapors is effective against a variety of gram-positive, gram-negative, and spore-forming microorganisms.

The enzyme catalysing the polyamine-stimulated modification of Physarum ornithine decarboxylase in vivo was partially purified and its activity on purified ornithine decarboxylase was examined with respect to its specificity for various amines. Spermidine, spermine and several polyamine analogues strongly promoted this reaction in vitro (apparent Km in the 0.1--0.5 mM range), whereas putrescine (apparent Km 5.33 mM) and several related diamines were not nearly as effective. In agreement with this, sensitivity studies performed in vivo also suggested that cellular spermidine, and not putrescine, is critical in modulating ornithine decarboxylase activity by this post-translational control. Unlike putrescine, or other diamines, 1,3-diaminopropane demonstrated a functional similarity to the polyamines in stimulating this reaction. This study has demonstrated a method whereby non-physiological amines capable of depressing ornithine decarboxylase activity by this natural feedback mechanism can be readily identified for further evaluation of their potential use in the experimental and medical control of polyamine biosynthesis.

A detailed understanding of alveolar epithelial cell transitions during remodeling after lung injury requires the identification of specific markers. We have developed a panel of monoclonal antibodies against species of the intermediate filament protein, keratin. These individual species are recognized markers of the state of differentiation of various epithelial cells. These and complementary protein analytic methods have been applied to studies of isolated, enriched Type II pneumocyte preparations as well as to normal and injured lung tissues. Monoclonal antibody 24A3, initially raised against Morris hepatoma 7777 keratins, decorated a filament network in isolated cultured rat Type II pneumocytes by indirect immunofluorescence; it reacts by 2-dimensional polyacrylamide gel immunoblot procedures with an acidic, 46,000-dalton keratin. Monoclonal antikeratin antibodies AE1 and AE3, raised against human epidermal keratins, reacted poorly with isolated Type II cells; however, AE3 reacted by immunoblot technique with the 55,000-dalton keratin subclass. The bronchial epithelium reacted intensely with 24A3 as well as with a mix of AE1 plus AE3 in ethanol-fixed, paraffin-embedded sections of normal and injured rat lung. Alveolar regions of normal lung reacted poorly with all 3 antibodies, however, as visualized by light microscopy. At the same time, very large, presumptive epithelial cells in the alveolar regions stained intensely with 24A3 3 days after intratracheal instillation of bleomycin, whereas thin cells lining the alveoli in injured regions were intensely reactive 14 days after bleomycin treatment. These elongated cells may represent Type II pneumocytes in the process of converting to Type I cells.

During a 28-month period, 5,078 cultures from a variety of anatomical sites were received for staphylococcal phage typing. Of these, 503 (10%) were not suitable for the procedure requested. Of the 4,575 viable cultures, 1,030 (23%) of the microorganisms were nontypable at both the routine test dilution (RTD) and at 100 times RTD. Of the 3,545 typable organisms, 3,061 (86%) were lysed at RTD, whereas 484 (14%) were typed only at 100 times RTD. Observations pertaining to the typing efficacy of staphylococcal phage 94 indicate that 651 (18%) of the typable microorganisms were lysed only by phage 94 at RTD or at 100 times RTD. Without the addition of this new phage to the international basic set, the number of nontypable strains (1,030 or 23%) would have been 1,681 (39%). Data regarding the geographic distribution of Staphylococcus aureus phage 94 point to the occurrence of the host strain in 13 (68%) of 19 states and 18 (62%) of the 29 hospitals submitting specimens to this laboratory. The assumed origin and speculated mode of dissemination of this microorganism are discussed.

Dicyclohexylamine, a spermidine synthase inhibitor, was evaluated for its ability to alter specific polyamine levels in rat hepatoma HTC cells in culture. Media concentrations of 0.5 and 1.0 mM reduced the production of spermidine from putrescine and enhanced the conversion of existing spermidine to spermine. This created a very interesting change in polyamine levels such that after 24 h putrescine content was almost 3-times control values and spermine was about twice, while spermidine was lowered to about 10% of control cultures. This pattern of polyamines is quite distinct from that induced by the common polyamine biosynthetic inhibitors like methylglyoxal bis(guanylhydrazone) and difluoromethylornithine and replicates the pattern induced by S-adenosyl-1,8-diamino-3-thiooctane, a transition-state analog designed as a specific inhibitor of spermidine synthase. When cells were stimulated by serum addition, the presence of dicyclohexylamine caused an extraordinarily large induction in ornithine decarboxylase in spite of the abnormally high levels of both putrescine and spermine. The concomitant depression of spermidine levels induced a 4-fold increase in the stability of this enzyme that could be reversed by the addition of exogenous spermidine. The data suggest that spermidine induces, perhaps at the transcriptional level, a protein that is necessary for the characteristically very rapid inactivation of ornithine decarboxylase.

The rapid activity modulation of ornithine decarboxylase (L-ornithine carboxy-lyase, EC 4.1.1.17) in Physarum polycephalum is closely correlated with a reversible post-translational modification of this enzyme. A factor has now been isolated from homogenates of exponentially-grown microplasmodia which catalyzes the conversion of the active enzyme form, A, into its less active, B state. Partial purification of this A-B converting factor has been achieved using DEAE-Sephacel chromatography and Ultrogel AcA-34 gel filtration. It appears to be a heat labile, acidic protein with a molecular weight of about 35 000 which binds to large macromolecules in crude fractions isolated using low ionic strength buffers. The in vitro converting reaction requires the presence of spermidine or spermine (1 mM) while putrescine is much less effective, and inorganic cations are ineffective at levels up to 5 mM. Enzyme conversion is reduced in elevated ionic strengths and in the presence of polyamine chelators such as ATP, ADP or GTP (1.0 mM). Under current assay conditions the interaction between ornithine decarboxylase and this factor is stoichiometric, yet it is not reversed even by conditions which favor dissociation of protein-protein interactions. This is the first report of the isolation of a protein factor which is involved in the interconversion of ornithine decarboxylase between its alternate enzyme states.

Early results from the meteorological instruments on the Viking 2 lander are presented. As on lander 1, the daily patterns of temperature, wind, and pressure have been highly repetitive during the early summer period. The average daily maximum temperature was 241 degrees K and the diurnal minimum was 191 degrees K. The wind has a vector mean of 0.7 meter per second from the southeast with a diurnal amplitude of 3 meters per second. Pressure exhibits both diurnal and semidiurnal oscillations, although of substantially smaller amplitude than those of lander 1. Departures from the repetitive diurnal patterns begin to appear on sol 37.

Haemophilus influenzae (H. aegyptius) biotype 3 was isolated from eye, nasopharyngeal, and sputum cultures of a 23-month-old male and from sputum and transtracheal aspirate cultures of his 39-year-old mother, both with diffuse bronchopneumonia.

Voyager 2 photography has complemented that of Voyager I in revealing many additional characteristics of Saturn and its satellites and rings. Saturn's atmosphere contains persistent oval cloud features reminiscent of features on Jupiter. Smaller irregular features track out a pattern of zonal winds that is symmetric about Saturn's equator and appears to extend to great depth. Winds are predominantly eastward and reach 500 meters per second at the equator. Titan has several haze layers with significantly varying optical properties and a northern polar "collar" that is dark at short wavelengths. Several satellites have been photographed at substantially improved resolution. Enceladus' surface ranges from old, densely cratered terrain to relatively young, uncratered plains crossed by grooves and faults. Tethys has a crater 400 kilometers in diameter whose floor has domed to match Tethys' surface curvature and a deep trench that extends at least 270 degrees around Tethys' circumference. Hyperion is cratered and irregular in shape. Iapetus' bright, trailing hemisphere includes several dark-floored craters, and Phoebe has a very low albedo and rotates in the direction opposite to that of its orbital revolution with a period of 9 hours. Within Saturn's rings, the "birth" of a spoke has been observed, and surprising azimuthal and time variability is found in the ringlet structure of the outer B ring. These observations lead to speculations about Saturn's internal structure and about the collisional and thermal history of the rings and satellites.

Ornithine decarboxylase isolated from HTC cells was separated into two distinct charged states by salt-gradient elution from DEAE-Sepharose columns. This charge difference between the enzyme forms was maintained in partially purified preparations, but enzyme form II was observed to change to form I in a time-dependent polyamine-stimulated fashion in crude cell homogenates. The enzyme modification that produces this charge diversity between the alternative enzyme states was further investigated for its role in enzyme activity induction, protein stability and rapid turnover. Inhibition of new protein synthesis by cycloheximide resulted in a much more rapid loss of form I enzyme than of form II, suggesting that during normal enzyme turnover the latter enzyme state may be derived from the former. Culture conditions that favour the stabilization of this usually labile enzyme generally induced an increased proportion of the enzyme in the form II charge state. In particular, inhibitors of synthesis of spermidine and spermine induced the stabilization of cellular ornithine decarboxylase and promoted a marked accumulation in form II. Conversely, polyamines added to the cells in culture induced a very rapid loss in both forms of the enzyme, an effect that could not be attributed merely to an inhibition of new enzyme synthesis. It appears that the polyamines, but not putrescine, may be an essential part of the rapid ornithine decarboxylase inactivation process and that they may function in part by stimulating the conversion of the more stable enzyme form II into the less stable enzyme state, form I.

As Voyager 1 flew through the Saturn system it returned photographs revealing many new and surprising characteristics of this complicated community of bodies. Saturn's atmosphere has numerous, low-contrast, discrete cloud features and a pattern of circulation significantly different from that of Jupiter. Titan is shrouded in a haze layer that varies in thickness and appearance. Among the icy satellites there is considerable variety in density, albedo, and surface morphology and substantial evidence for endogenic surface modification. Trends in density and crater characteristics are quite unlike those of the Galilean satellites. Small inner satellites, three of which were discovered in Voyager images, interact gravitationally with one another and with the ring particles in ways not observed elsewhere in the solar system. Saturn's broad A, B, and C rings contain hundreds of "ringlets," and in the densest portion of the B ring there are numerous nonaxisymmetric features. The narrow F ring has three components which, in at least one instance, are kinked and crisscrossed. Two rings are observed beyond the F ring, and material is seen between the C ring and the planet.

The molecular mechanism for polyamine-stimulated feedback modification of ornithine decarboxylase isolated from Physarum polycephalum was investigated by using two-dimensional polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis. Partially purified A-form enzyme was converted into the B-form enzyme by isolated fractions of the Physarum A-B-converting protein, and the substrates and products were subsequently labelled by covalent addition of alpha-difluoro[14C]methylornithine, an enzyme-activated irreversible inhibitor. The active (A-form) and inactive (B-form) states of this enzyme were found to have the same Mr value, 52 000, yet they differed noticeably in their pI values, 5.45 and 5.65 respectively. In further experiments, the use of high-specific-radioactivity [3H]spermidine to stimulate this enzyme modification was shown not to result in the covalent attachment of this polyamine to ornithine decarboxylase. These results demonstrate that the polyamine-induced modification of ornithine decarboxylase in Physarum is not due to any of the mechanisms previously suggested for ornithine decarboxylase inactivation in this and other eukaryotes, namely phosphorylation, covalent polyamine addition or the non-covalent association of a specific low-Mr protein.

The activity of L-ornithine decarboxylase (EC 4.1.1.17, ODC) has become a useful indicator of hormone responsiveness. Various regimens of dexamethasone, aldosterone and epinephrine, alone or in combination, were administered to adrenalectomized rats either in acute or chronic doses. In addition, adrenalectomized rats, which were chronically treated with aldosterone and epinephrine, were given a single injection of 50 micrograms dexamethasone and sacrificed at various time intervals after hormone treatment. Hepatic and thymic ODC activity was measured. The expected dexamethasone effect, an increase in hepatic and a decrease in thymic ODC, was observed. This study also revealed that aldosterone induced similar responses in these tissues. Epinephrine had the opposite effect since chronic administration of dexamethasone or aldosterone with epinephrine resulted in control levels of ODC. Furthermore, when aldosterone and epinephrine were chronically administered to adrenalectomized rats, to study the acute effects of dexamethasone on rat thymus and liver, the time course of the response in each tissue was found to be distinct. The influence of the adrenal gland on rat thymus and liver is not restricted only to glucocorticoids, but may also involve other hormones which it secretes.
