Abstract

Missionary and minister of the church Lesslie Newbigin studied economics at Cambridge University, England. He worked for some time with the Student Christian Movement, partly in order to raise funds for theological training. He studied theology between 1933 and 1936, and then travelled to India as a missionary for the Church of Scotland. He became one of the founders of the Church of South India, and was one of its first bishops. He became general secretary of the International Missionary Council in 1959.

Mother Teresa, the famous nun who looked after the poor in Calcutta, India, would have been pleased to die, aged 87, in the same week as Diana, Princess of Wales. The nun, whose real name was Agnes Goinxha Bejaxhiu, was born in Albania. She believed God wanted her to set up a new order and to serve the poor, and claimed she heard his voice on a train whilst travelling through India. Mother Teresa was admired because of her work with the dying in particular. She also, as an anti-abortionist, cared for abandoned children.
