This paper presents a simple, yet effective method for dynamic beamforming that can be readily realized by integrating a tunable binary Huygens' metasurface with a leaky-waveguide antenna. Heretofore, dynamic beamforming has been difficult to achieve owing to the challenges in attaining full 360 of dynamic phase tunability, while also independently controlling the local aperture amplitudes from zero to unity. In contrast, the hereby proposed method only requires 90 of dynamic phase tunability (with arbitrary transmission amplitudes), thereby significantly alleviating the stringent tuning requirements. In particular, the proposed method is obtained by leveraging the antenna-array and holography theories, and utilizing the idea of ‘virtual’ electric line sources. Based on full-wave simulations, we demonstrate the versatility of the proposed method through the designs of a Huygens'-metasurface-assisted leaky-waveguide antenna that generates various complex far-field patterns such as sector beams and Dolph-Chebyshev patterns.

This paper studies a deep learning approach for binary assignment problems in wireless networks, which identifies binary variables for permutation matrices. This poses challenges in designing a structure of a neural network and its training strategies for generating feasible assignment solutions. To this end, this paper develop a new Sinkhorn neural network which learns a non-convex projection task onto a set of permutation matrices. An unsupervised training algorithm is proposed where the Sinkhorn neural network can be applied to network assignment problems. The proton conduction behavior and electrochemical performance of PrBaFe2O5+δ (PBF) are firstly studied for use as promising anode materials in symmetrical proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells (PCFCs). This study focuses on the investigation of protonic defect formation in PBF and its properties as an electrode, including its chemical stability, electrochemical performance and redox stability. PBF is found to have proton conductivity at intermediate temperatures, which contributes to improved hydrogen oxidation reaction and water formation reaction at the anode and cathode, respectively. Hence, the symmetrical PCFC exhibits a peak power density of 301 mW∙cm−2 and total resistance of 0.77 Ω∙cm2 at 700 °C. Further, it shows excellent redox-cycle stability upon cycling between fuel and air under a current load. The electrochemical analysis and redox cycling tests of the PBF anode demonstrate that PBF is an attractive candidate for alternative material for symmetrical PCFCs.

The clinical application of cisplatin, one of the most effective chemotherapeutic agents used to treat various cancers, has been limited by the risk of adverse effects, notably nephrotoxicity. Despite intensive research for decades, there are no effective approaches for alleviating cisplatin nephrotoxicity. This study aimed to investigate the protective effects and potential mechanisms of a Gynostemma pentaphyllum leaves hydrodistillate (GPHD) and its major component, damulin B, against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in vitro and in vivo. A hydro-distillation method can extract large amounts of components within a short period of time using non-toxic, environmentally friendly solvent. We found that the levels of AMP-activated protein kinase α1 (AMPKα1), reactive oxygen species (ROS), and apoptosis were tightly associated with each other in HEK293 cells treated with cisplatin. We demonstrated that AMPKα1 acted as an anti-oxidant factor and that ROS generated by cisplatin suppressed the expression of AMPKα1 at the transcriptional level, thereby resulting in induction of apoptosis. Treatment with GPHD or damulin B effectively prevented cisplatin-induced apoptosis of HEK293 cells and cisplatin-induced acute kidney injury in mice by suppressing oxidative stress and maintaining AMPKα1 levels. Therefore, our study suggests that GPHD and damulin B may serve as prospective adjuvant agents against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity.

The function of peripheral nociceptors is frequently tuned by the action of G protein-coupled receptors (GPRs) that are expressed in them, which contribute to pain alteration. Expanding new information on such GPRs and predicting their potential outcomes can help to construct new analgesic strategies based on their modulations. In this context, we attempted to present a new GPR not yet acknowledged for its pain association. Gpr83 exhibits relatively high expressions in the peripheral nervous system compared to other tissues when we mined and reconstructed Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) metadata, which we confirmed using immunohistochemistry on murine dorsal root ganglia (DRG). When Gpr83 expression was silenced in DRG, neuronal and behavioral nociception were all downregulated. Pathologic pain in hind paw inflammation and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy were also alleviated by this Gpr83 knockdown. Dependent on exposure time, the application of a known endogenous Gpr83 ligand PEN showed differential effects on nociceptor responses in vitro. Localized PEN administration mitigated pain in vivo, probably following Gq/11-involved GPR downregulation caused by the relatively constant exposure. Collectively, this study suggests that Gpr83 action contributes to the tuning of peripheral pain sensitivity and thus indicates that Gpr83 can be among the potential GPR targets for pain modulation.

In cross-coupling of biomass-derived acetone and alcohols contributing to the production of carbon-elongated chemicals and fuels, the essential catalyst components are metal dispersion for alcohol dehydrogenation and, more importantly, basicity for carbon–carbon coupling. Herein, we report the potential of co-precipitated praseodymia–zirconia solid solution (Pr2Zr2O7) as a support of Cu catalyst for the conversion of acetone and butanol into C7 and C11 products. Cu/Pr2Zr2O7 exhibits a high yield of C7 and C11 (ca. 84%) compared to Cu/ZrO2 and Cu/PrO1.83. Moreover, it is robust under the employed solvent-free conditions owing to a solid solution of Pr2Zr2O7 compared to PrO1.83 showing phase transition to PrOHCO3. It is also tolerant to up to 5 wt % water of the reactant mixture, recyclable once adequate post-treatment is employed after the reaction, and can convert the acetone–butanol–ethanol mixture into C5–C11 products at the nearly equivalent yield (82%) to the acetone–butanol mixture. Therefore, the Cu/Pr2Zr2O7 reported herein is an efficient catalyst for the coupling of acetone with linear aliphatic alcohols into biofuel precursors.

Recently, new form factors, such as foldable, have increased demand for mobile products.Moreover, mobile phones should support the RF signal frequency up to the mm-wave frequencydue to the expansion of 5G mobile products. Therefore, 5G foldable products require componentsthat facilitate both mm-wave RF transmission and ultra-high flexibility for interconnecting throughthe hinge structure of foldable products. To improve flexibility, a flexible PCB must be thin with noground vias in its bending section; in contrast, the low-loss flexible PCB for mm-wave transmissionmust be thick and have many ground vias, so there is a trade-off relationship between flexibilityand RF characteristics. This paper proposes a new flexible PCB structure that does not experienceproblems regarding signal transmission to the mm-wave band, even when folded 200,000 times.To overcome the physical limits of the trade-off relationship, an interlayer air-gap was formed; astructure with a via-less and meander ground shape is proposed. The simulated loss of the proposedstructure was 0.0254 dB/mm @ 10 GHz, and the isolation between signals ranged from 21.98 dBto 10 GHz. The simulated results of insertion loss and isolation were experimentally verified. Theproposed structure is currently being applied to the RF flexible PCB that interconnects through thehinge of a foldable phone, and is currently being mass-produced.

Despite the importance of aerosol height information for events such as volcanic eruptions and long-range aerosol transport, spatial coverage of its retrieval is often limited because of a lack of appropriate instruments and algorithms. Especially, geostationary satellite observations provide constant monitoring for such events. This study assessed the application of different viewing geometries for a pair of geostationary imagers to retrieve aerosol top height (ATH) information. The stereoscopic algorithm converts the lofted aerosol layer parallax, calculated using image-matching of two visible images, to ATH. The sensitivity study prospects a reliable result using a pair of Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) and Advanced Geostationary Radiation Imager (AGRI) images at 40° longitudinal separation. The pair resolved aerosol layers above 1 km altitude over East Asia. In comparison, aerosol layers must be above 3 km to be resolved by paired AHI and Advanced Meteorological Imager (AMI) images at 12.5° longitudinal separation. Case studies indicate that the stereoscopic ATH retrieval results are consistent with aerosol heights determined using extinction profiles from the Cloud–Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP). Comparisons between the stereoscopic ATH and the CALIOP height, defined by extinction coefficient data, indicated that 71.3 % of ATH estimates from the AHI and AGRI are within 2 km of CALIOP heights, compared with 49.3 % from the AHI and AMI. The ability of the stereoscopic algorithm to monitor hourly aerosol height variations is demonstrated by comparison with a Korea Aerosol Lidar Observation Network dataset.

Background Muscle wasting, resulting from aging or pathological conditions, leads to reduced quality of life, increased morbidity, and increased mortality. Much research effort has been focused on the development of exercise mimetics to prevent muscle atrophy and weakness. In this study, we identified indoprofen from a screen for peroxisome proliferator‐activated receptor γ coactivator α (PGC‐1α) inducers and report its potential as a drug for muscle wasting. Methods The effects of indoprofen treatment on dexamethasone‐induced atrophy in mice and in 3‐phosphoinositide‐dependent protein kinase‐1 (PDK1)‐deleted C2C12 myotubes were evaluated by immunoblotting to determine the expression levels of myosin heavy chain and anabolic‐related and oxidative metabolism‐related proteins. Young, old, and disuse‐induced muscle atrophic mice were administered indoprofen (2 mg/kg body weight) by gavage. Body weight, muscle weight, grip strength, isometric force, and muscle histology were assessed. The expression levels of muscle mass‐related and function‐related proteins were analysed by immunoblotting or immunostaining. Results In young (3‐month‐old) and aged (22‐month‐old) mice, indoprofen treatment activated oxidative metabolism‐related enzymes and led to increased muscle mass. Mechanistic analysis using animal models and muscle cells revealed that indoprofen treatment induced the sequential activation of AKT/p70S6 kinase (S6K) and AMP‐activated protein kinase (AMPK), which in turn can augment protein synthesis and PGC‐1α induction, respectively. Structural prediction analysis identified PDK1 as a target of indoprofen and, indeed, short‐term treatment with indoprofen activated the PDK1/AKT/S6K pathway in muscle cells. Consistent with this finding, PDK1 inhibition abrogated indoprofen‐induced AKT/S6K activation and hypertrophic response. Conclusions Our findings demonstrate the effects of indoprofen in boosting skeletal muscle mass through the sequential activation of PDK1/AKT/S6K and AMPK/PGC‐1α. Taken together, our results suggest that indoprofen represents a potential drug to prevent muscle wasting and weakness related to aging or muscle diseases.

Optical Kerr effect (OKE) spectroscopy is a method that measures the time-dependent change of the birefringence induced by an optical laser pulse using another optical laser pulse and has been used often to study the ultrafast dynamics of molecular liquids. Here we demonstrate an alternative method, femtosecond time-resolved X-ray liquidography (fs-TRXL), where the microscopic structural motions related to the OKE response can be monitored using a different type of probe, i.e., X-ray solution scattering. By applying fs-TRXL to acetonitrile and a dye solution in acetonitrile, we demonstrate that different types of molecular motions around photoaligned molecules can be resolved selectively, even without any theoretical modeling, based on the anisotropy of two-dimensional scattering patterns and extra structural information contained in the q-space scattering data. Specifically, the dynamics of reorientational (libration and orientational diffusion) and translational (interaction-induced motion) motions are captured separately by anisotropic and isotropic scattering signals, respectively. Furthermore, the two different types of reorientational motions are distinguished from each other by their own characteristic scattering patterns and time scales. The measured time-resolved scattering signals are in excellent agreement with the simulated scattering signals based on a molecular dynamics simulation for plausible molecular configurations, providing the detailed structural description of the OKE response in liquid acetonitrile.

Heterometal doping is a powerful method for tuning the physicochemical properties of metal nanoclusters. While the heterometals doped into such nanoclusters predominantly include transition metals with closed d-shells, the doping of open d-shell metals remains largely unexplored. Herein, we report the first synthesis of a [RhHAg24 (SPhMe2 )18 ]2- nanocluster, in which a Rh atom with open d-shells ([Kr]4d8 5s1 ) is incorporated into the Ag24 framework by forming a RhH superatom with closed d-shells ([Kr]4d10 ). Combined experimental and theoretical investigations showed that the Ag24 framework was co-doped with Rh and hydride and that the RhH dopant was a superatomic construct of a Pd atom. Additional studies demonstrated that the [RhHAg24 (SPhMe2 )18 ]2- nanocluster was isoelectronic to the [PdAg24 (SPhMe2 )18 ]2- nanocluster with the superatomic 8-electron configuration (1S2 1P6 ). This study demonstrated for the first time that a superatom could be incorporated into a cluster superatom to generate a stable superatom-in-superatom nanocluster.

The electrochemical conversion of small molecules, such as CO

In recent years, propagation channel characteristics have been effectively used in several applications such as motion sensing and position detection. Considerable attention has been paid to channel-sounding methods that are easy to utilize using low-cost devices. This paper presents a device-free indoor location estimation method using the spatio-temporal features of radio propagation channels using a 2.4 GHz-band three-by-three multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) channel sounder developed using commodity wireless local area network (WLAN). The measurement results demonstrated a reasonable performance of the proposed method with a small number of antennas.

Organic light-emitting diode (OLED) microdisplays have attracted much attention as displays for small form factor augmented reality (AR) devices. To realize glass-like thin and wide field of view (FoV) AR devices, we designed a display module with a high aspect ratio microdisplay and a thin optical component. For the high aspect ratio microdisplay, we developed the color OLED microdisplay with a 32:9 aspect ratio and a 0.8-inch diagonal ∼2,490-ppi CMOS backplane. To express color and reduce optical crosstalk, we fabricated the color filter (C/F) patterning directly on the white OLED. We also developed a pin mirror lens with 11 pin mirrors to improve the optical efficiency and quality with a thin lens. By combining the microdisplay with LetinAR’s pin mirror lens, we successfully demonstrated an AR device with a wide horizontal FoV of 46° but with a small form factor 4 mm lens.

In this study, we implemented reversible current switching (RCS) of 100 mA in a two-terminal device based on a vanadium dioxide (VO2) thin film, which could be controlled by far-infrared (FIR) laser pulses. The VO2 thin films used for fabrication of two-terminal devices were grown on sapphire (Al2O3) substrates using a pulsed laser deposition method. An optimal deposition condition was determined by analyzing the resistance-temperature curves of deposited VO2 thin films and the current–voltage characteristics of two-terminal devices based on these films, which were suggested in our previous works. The film surface of the VO2-based device was directly irradiated using focused CO2 laser pulses, and the insulator-metal transition or metal-insulator transition of the VO2 thin film could be triggered depending on laser irradiation. Consequently, RCS of up to 100 mA could be accomplished. This on-state current is close to the upper limit of the current flowing through our VO2 device. The switching contrast, defined as the ratio between on-state and off-state currents, was evaluated and found to be ˜11,962. The average rising and falling times of the switched current were found to be ˜29.2 and ˜71.7 ms, respectively. In comparison with our previous work, the improved heat dissipation structure and the high-quality thin film could maintain the switching contrast at a similar level, although the on-state current was increased by about two times.

Here we report an optical fiber sensor capable of performing strain-insensitive simultaneous measurement of bending and temperature using a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) inscribed on doubleclad fiber (DCF) with a CO2 laser at ˜10.6 μm. The LPFG inscribed on DCF, referred to as a DC-LPFG, was fabricated by scanning CO2 laser pulses on an unjacketed DCF with a specific period. Due to co-directional mode coupling, the fabricated DC-LPFG has discrete attenuation bands widely distributed over hundreds of nanometers. Among these wavelength-dependent loss dips, adjacent two dips with different resonance wavelengths were selected as sensor indicators for the measurement of bending and temperature. For these two indicator dips designated as dips A and B, their bending and temperature responses were investigated in a curvature range of 4.90 to 21.91 m−1 and a temperature range of 30 to 110 °C. With increasing bending applied to the DC-LPFG at room temperature, dips A and B showed different blue shifts. The bending sensitivities of dips A and B were measured to be approximately −0.77 and 0.51 nm/m−1, respectively. Unlike the bending response, they showed red shifts of different amounts with increasing ambient temperature, while the sensor head (i.e., the DC-LPFG) remained straight without any applied bending. The temperature sensitivities of dips A and B were measured to be ˜0.094 and ˜0.078 nm/°C, respectively. Owing to their linear and independent responses to bending and temperature, bending and temperature changes applied to the DC-LPFG could be simultaneously estimated from the measured wavelength shifts of the two indicator dips using their pre-determined bending and temperature sensitivities. Moreover, in a strain range of 0 to 2200 με (step: 200 με), strain-induced spectral variations of dips A and B were also measured, and the strain sensitivities of dips A and B were evaluated as approximately −0.028 and −0.013 pm/με, respectively. These strain-induced wavelength shifts were so small that they had little effect on the measurement results of bending and temperature. Thus, it is concluded that the fabricated DC-LPFG can be employed as a cost-effective sensor head for strain-insensitive separate measurement of bending and temperature.
