Core-collapse supernovae are among the most magnificent events in the observable universe. They produce many of the chemical elements necessary for life to exist and their remnants—neutron stars and black holes—are interesting astrophysical objects in their own right. However, despite millennia of observations and almost a century of astrophysical study, the explosion mechanism of core-collapse supernovae is not yet well understood. Hyper-Kamiokande is a next-generation neutrino detector that will be able to observe the neutrino flux from the next galactic core-collapse supernova in unprecedented detail. We focus on the first 500 ms of the neutrino burst, corresponding to the accretion phase, and use a newly-developed, high-precision supernova event generator to simulate Hyper-Kamiokande's response to five different supernova models. We show that Hyper-Kamiokande will be able to distinguish between these models with high accuracy for a supernova at a distance of up to 100 kpc. Once the next galactic supernova happens, this ability will be a powerful tool for guiding simulations toward a precise reproduction of the explosion mechanism observed in nature. Ants are continually introduced into regions outside of their natural biogeographic ranges via global trade. The genus Strumigenys Smith 1860 (Formicidae: Myrmicinae) are minute predators with a growing history of global introductions, although tropical introductions into temperate zones are rarely able to establish outside of heated infrastructures. We report the first record of the Australasian Strumigenys perplexa (Smith 1876) to Europe and the British Isles from four sites on Guernsey, Channel Islands. This novel discovery is likely attributable to the species wide climatic and habitat tolerances, enabling the species to establish away from its natural range in Australasia and from heated-infrastructure. A key to the West Palaearctic Strumigenys species is provided alongside a preliminary and critical checklist of ant species recorded from the Channel Island archipelago, listing 32 species. Symbionts of ant colonies can hitchhike on winged ant reproductives (alates) during colony nuptial flights. Attaphila fungicola Wheeler, a miniature cockroach that lives in the nests of Texas leaf-cutter ants (Atta texana Buckley), hitchhikes on female alates (winged queens). Hitchhiking roaches are presumably vertically transmitted from leaf-cutter parent colonies to daughter colonies, remaining with female alates as they transition into foundresses (workerless queens); however, foundresses have limited resources and high mortality rates. Rather than remaining with foundresses likely to die (vertical transmission), roaches might abandon them during dispersal to infect higher-quality later stages of colony development (female alate–vectored transmission). In field experiments, I find evidence for female alate–vectored transmission and discover that roaches use a second hitchhiking step (riding foraged plant material) to infect established colonies. This work reveals a novel relationship between host dispersal and symbiont transmission and shows that colony development can be an important selection pressure on transmission. Next-generation experiments allow for the possibility of testing the neutrino flavor oscillation model to very high levels of accuracy. Here, we explore the possibility that the dark matter in the current universe is made of two particles, a sterile neutrino and a very light dark matter particle. By using a 3+1 neutrino flavor oscillation model, we study how such a type of dark matter imprints the solar neutrino fluxes, spectra, and survival probabilities of electron neutrinos. The current solar neutrino measurements allow us to define an upper limit for the ratio of the mass of a light dark matter particle m
ϕ and the Fermi constant Gϕ , such that Gϕ /mϕ must be smaller than 1030 GF eV−1 to be in agreement with current solar neutrino data from the Borexino, Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, and Super-Kamiokande detectors. Moreover, for models with a very small Fermi constant, the amplitude of the time variability must be lower than 3% to be consistent with current solar neutrino data. We also found that solar neutrino detectors like Darwin, able to measure neutrino fluxes in the low-energy range with high accuracy, will provide additional constraints to this class of models that complement the ones obtained from the current solar neutrino detectors. The combination of the high intensity proton beam facilities and massive detectors for precision measurements of neutrino oscillation parameters including the charge-parity violating (CPV) phase will open the door to help make beyond the standard model (BSM) physics reachable even in low energy regimes in the accelerator-based experiments. Large-mass detectors with highly precise tracking and energy measurements, excellent timing resolution, and low energy thresholds will enable the searches for BSM phenomena from cosmogenic origin, as well. Therefore, it is also conceivable that BSM topics in the next-generation neutrino experiments could be the dominant physics topics in the foreseeable future, as the precision of the neutrino oscillation parameter and CPV measurements continue to improve. This paper provides a review of the current landscape of BSM theory in neutrino experiments in two selected areas of the BSM topics—dark matter and neutrino related BSM—and summarizes the current results from existing neutrino experiments to set benchmarks for both theory and experiment. This paper then provides a review of upcoming neutrino experiments throughout the next 10 to 15 year time scale and their capabilities to set the foundation for potential reach in BSM physics in the two aforementioned themes. An important outcome of this paper is to ensure theoretical and simulation tools exist to carry out studies of these new areas of physics, from the first day of the experiments, such as Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment in the U.S. and Hyper-Kamiokande Experiment in Japan. We discuss the physics of the three neutrino flavor transformation with non-unitary mixing matrix, with particular attention to the correlation between the |$\nu$| SM- and the |$\alpha$| parameters which represent the effect of unitarity-violating (UV) new physics. Towards this goal, a new perturbative framework is created to illuminate the effect of non-unitarity in the region of the solar-scale enhanced oscillations. We refute the skepticism about the physical reality of the |$\nu$| Standard Model CP phase |$\delta$| – |$\alpha$| parameter phase correlation by analysis with the SOL convention of |$U_{{\tiny MNS}}$| , in which |$e^{\pm i \delta}$| is attached to |$s_{12}$|. Then, a comparative study between the solar- and atmospheric-scale oscillation regions allowed by the framework reveals a dynamical |$\delta$| –(blobs of the |$\alpha$| parameters) correlation in the solar oscillation region, in sharp contrast to the "chiral"-type phase correlation |$[e^{- i \delta} \bar{\alpha}_{\mu e},\ e^{- i \delta} \bar{\alpha}_{\tau e},\ \bar{\alpha}_{\tau \mu}]$| in the Particle Data Group convention seen in the atmospheric oscillation region. An explicit perturbative calculation to the first order in the |$\nu_{\mu} \rightarrow \nu_{e}$| channel allows us to decompose the UV related part of the probability into the unitary evolution part and the genuine non-unitary part. We observe that the effect of non-unitarity tends to cancel between these two parts, as well as between the different |$\alpha_{\beta \gamma}$| parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The study of the flux of atmospheric neutrino crossing the Earth can provide useful information not only on the matter density of the different layers that make up the planet but also on their chemical composition. The key phenomenon that makes this possible is flavor oscillations and their dependence on the electron density along the neutrino baseline. To extract the relevant information, we simulate the energy and azimuth angle distribution of events produced in a generic neutrino telescope by atmospheric neutrinos passing through the deepest parts of the Earth. Changes in the densities of the outer core and the mantle are implemented by varying the location of the boundary between these layers so that the restrictions on the mass of and the moment of inertia of the Earth are both satisfied. This allows us to examine the effect of simultaneous changes in composition and density of the outer core, unlikely other works on the subject, where only one of these quantities was varied. We consider neutrino oscillations in vacuum in the framework of quantum field theory in which neutrino production and detection processes are part of a single Feynman diagram and the corresponding cross section is computed in the standard way, i.e. with final states represented by plane waves. We use assumptions which are realized in actual experiments and concentrate on the detection process. Moreover, we also allow for a finite time interval of length τ during which the detector records neutrino events. In this context we are motivated by accelerator-neutrino oscillation experiments where data taking is synchronized in time with the proton spill time of the accelerator. Given the final momenta and the direction of neutrino propagation, we find that in the oscillation amplitude—for all practical purposes—the neutrino energy Q is fixed, apart from an interval of order 2πℏ/τ around a mean energy this is an expression of energy non-conservation or the time-energy uncertainty relation in the detection process due to. We derive in excellent approximation that in the amplitude the oscillation effect originates from massive neutrinos with the same energy , i.e. oscillations take place in space without any decoherece effect, while the remaining integration over Q in the interval of order 2πℏ/τ around results in a time-correlation function expressing the time delay between neutrino production and detection. We present a neutrino oscillation analysis of two particular data sets from the Daya Bay and RENO reactor neutrino experiments aiming to study the increase in precision in the oscillation parameters sin 2 2 θ 13 and the effective mass splitting Δ m e e 2 gained by combining two relatively simple to reproduce analyses available in the literature. For Daya Bay, the data from 217 days between December 2011 and July 2012 were used. For RENO, we used the data from 500 live days between August 2011 and January 2012. We reproduce reasonably well the results of the individual analyses, both rate-only and spectral, defining a suitable χ 2 statistic for each case. Finally, we performed a combined spectral analysis and extract tighter constraints on the parameters, with an improved precision between 30 and 40% with respect to the individual analyses considered. In the standard model, the permutation symmetry among the three generations of fundamental fermions is usually regarded to be broken by the Higgs couplings. It is found that the symmetry is restored if we include the mass matrix parameters as physical variables which transform appropriately under the symmetry operation. Known relations between these variables, such as the renormalization group equations, as well as formulas for neutrino oscillations (in vacuum and in matter), are shown to be covariant tensor equations under the permutation symmetry group. COSMIC rays ,ATMOSPHERIC layers ,ZENITH distance ,MUONS ,GLOBAL temperature changes - Abstract
Cosmic rays are charged particles whose flux observed at Earth shows temporal variations related to space weather phenomena and may be an important tool to study them. The cosmic ray intensity recorded with ground‐based detectors also shows temporal variations arising from atmospheric variations. In the case of muon detectors, the main atmospheric effects are related to pressure and temperature changes. In this work, we analyze both effects using data recorded by the Global Muon Detector Network, consisting of four multidirectional muon detectors at different locations, in the period between 2007 and 2016. For each Global Muon Detector Network directional channel, we obtain coefficients that describe the pressure and temperature effects. We then analyze how these coefficients can be related to the geomagnetic cutoff rigidity and zenith angle associated with cosmic ray particles observed by each channel. In the pressure effect analysis, we found that the observed barometric coefficients show a very clear logarithmic correlation with the cutoff rigidity divided by the zenith angle cosine. On the other hand, the temperature coefficients show a good logarithmic correlation with the product of the cutoff and zenith angle cosine after adding a term proportional to the sine of geographical latitude of the observation site. This additional term implies that the temperature effect measured in the Northern Hemisphere detectors is stronger than that observed in the Southern Hemisphere. The physical origin of this term and of the good correlations found in this analysis should be studied in detail in future works. Key Points: Pressure and temperature effects observed by ground muon detectors was experimentally analyzed inrelation to cutoff rigidity and zenith angleThe best correlation was found when considering product between cutoff rigidity and zenith angle secant (pressure) or cosine (temperature)The temperature effect only shows a global trend if a relationship with the sine of each detector's geographic latitude is included [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study solutions of the equation which describes the evolution of a neutrino propagating in dense homogeneous medium in the framework of the quantum field theory. In the two-flavor model the explicit form of Green function is obtained, and as a consequence the dispersion law for a neutrino in matter is derived. Both the solutions describing the stationary states and the spin-flavor coherent states of the neutrino are found. It is shown that the stationary states of the neutrino are different from the mass states, and the wave function of a state with a definite flavor should be constructed as a linear combination of the wave functions of the stationary states with coefficients, which depend on the mixing angle in matter. In the ultra-relativistic limit the wave functions of the spin-flavor coherent states coincide with the solutions of the quasi-classical evolution equation. Quasi-classical approximation of the wave functions of spin-flavor coherent states is used to calculate the probabilities of transitions between neutrino states with definite flavor and helicity. The study of neutrino flavor oscillations in astrophysical sources has been boosted in the last two decades thanks to achievements in experimental neutrino physics and in observational astronomy. We here discuss two cases of interest in the modeling of short and long gamma‐ray bursts: hypercritical, that is, highly super‐Eddington spherical/disk accretion onto a neutron star/black hole. We show that in both systems, the ambient conditions of density and temperature imply the occurrence of neutrino flavor oscillations, with a relevant role of neutrino self‐interactions. We use atmospheric neutrino phenomenology to obtain the expected background to proton decay in large deep underground neutrino detector (DUNE)-like neutrino detectors. We introduced, for the first time in this kind of analysis, the experimentally confirmed neutrino oscillations of the atmospheric neutrino observations which reduce the corresponding background for the nucleon decay channel by a factor of 40%. Furthermore, we infer the impact of four systematics on such background: the overall efficiency, the muon reconstruction energy resolution, the resonant neutral pion cross-section, and the neutral pion angular resolution. Considering a 40 kton detector with efficiency of 45%, our analysis leads to an error band in the lower limit for the proton lifetime sensitivity, τ/B, from 7.9 × 10
33 years to 1.1 × 1034 years at 90% confidence level (C.L.). These numbers can be compared with the current mode-dependent experimental limits τ > 1031 − 1033 years at 90% C.L. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

The energy of atmospheric neutrinos detected by MACRO was estimated using multiple coulomb scattering of upward throughgoing muons. This analysis allows a test of atmospheric neutrino oscillations, relying on the distortion of the muon energy distribution. These results have been combined with those coming from the upward throughgoing muon angular distribution only. Both analyses are independent of the neutrino flux normalization and provide strong evidence, above the 4 sigma level, in favour of neutrino oscillations., 10 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Physics Letters B

- Abstract
The measurement of neutrino mass ordering (MO) is a fundamental element for the understanding of leptonic flavour sector of the Standard Model of Particle Physics. Its determination relies on the precise measurement of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] using either neutrino vacuum oscillations, such as the ones studied by medium baseline reactor experiments, or matter effect modified oscillations such as those manifesting in long-baseline neutrino beams (LB[Formula: see text]B) or atmospheric neutrino experiments. Despite existing MO indication today, a fully resolved MO measurement ([Formula: see text]) is most likely to await for the next generation of neutrino experiments: JUNO, whose stand-alone sensitivity is [Formula: see text], or LB[Formula: see text]B experiments (DUNE and Hyper-Kamiokande). Upcoming atmospheric neutrino experiments are also expected to provide precious information. In this work, we study the possible context for the earliest full MO resolution. A firm resolution is possible even before 2028, exploiting mainly vacuum oscillation, upon the combination of JUNO and the current generation of LB[Formula: see text]B experiments (NOvA and T2K). This opportunity is possible thanks to a powerful synergy boosting the overall sensitivity where the sub-percent precision of [Formula: see text] by LB[Formula: see text]B experiments is found to be the leading order term for the MO earliest discovery. We also found that the comparison between matter and vacuum driven oscillation results enables unique discovery potential for physics beyond the Standard Model., (© 2022. The Author(s).)

221. Comprehensive measurement of pp-chain solar neutrinos.

- Abstract
About 99 per cent of solar energy is produced through sequences of nuclear reactions that convert hydrogen into helium, starting from the fusion of two protons (the pp chain). The neutrinos emitted by five of these reactions represent a unique probe of the Sun’s internal working and, at the same time, offer an intense natural neutrino beam for fundamental physics. Here we report a complete study of the pp chain. We measure the neutrino-electron elastic-scattering rates for neutrinos produced by four reactions of the chain: the initial proton-proton fusion, the electron-capture decay of beryllium-7, the three-body proton-electron-proton (pep) fusion, here measured with the highest precision so far achieved, and the boron-8 beta decay, measured with the lowest energy threshold. We also set a limit on the neutrino flux produced by the
3 He-proton fusion (hep). These measurements provide a direct determination of the relative intensity of the two primary terminations of the pp chain (pp-I and pp-II) and an indication that the temperature profile in the Sun is more compatible with solar models that assume high surface metallicity. We also determine the survival probability of solar electron neutrinos at different energies, thus probing simultaneously and with high precision the neutrino flavour-conversion paradigm, both in vacuum and in matter-dominated regimes. All components of the proton-proton nuclear fusion chain, in which hydrogen is converted into helium in the Sun, are described, with several implications for fundamental solar and particle physics. Abstract: For a mutualism to remain evolutionarily stable, theory predicts that mutualists should limit their associations to high‐quality partners. However, most mutualists either simultaneously or sequentially associate with multiple partners that confer the same type of reward. By viewing mutualisms through the lens of niche breadth evolution, we outline how the environment shapes partner availability and relative quality, and ultimately a focal mutualist's partner breadth. We argue that mutualists that associate with multiple partners may have a selective advantage compared to specialists for many reasons, including sampling, complementarity, and portfolio effects, as well as the possibility that broad partner breadth increases breadth along other niche axes. Furthermore, selection for narrow partner breadth is unlikely to be strong when the environment erodes variation in partner quality, reduces the costs of interacting with low‐quality partners, spatially structures partner communities, or decreases the strength of mutualism. Thus, we should not be surprised that most mutualists have broad partner breadth, even if it allows for ineffective partners to persist. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The angular distribution of upward-going muons produced by atmospheric neutrinos in the rock below the MACRO detector show anomalies in good agreement with two flavor neutrino-mu ==> neutrino-tau oscillations with maximum mixing and Delta m**2 around 0.0024 eV**2. Exploiting the dependence of magnitude of the matter effect on oscillation channel, and using a set of 809 upward-going muons observed in MACRO, we show that the two flavor neutrino-mu ==> neutrino-sterile oscillation is disfavored with 99% C.L. with respect to neutrino-mu ==> neutrino-tau., 7 pages 4 figures Submitted to Physics Letters B

High energy gamma ray astronomy is now a well established field and several sources have been discovered in the region from a few GeV up to several TeV. If sources involving hadronic processes exist, the production of photons would be accompanied by neutrinos too. Other possible neutrino sources could be related to the annihilation of WIMPs at the center of galaxies with black holes. We present the results of a search for point-like sources using 1100 upward-going muons produced by neutrino interactions in the rock below and inside the MACRO detector in the underground Gran Sasso Laboratory. These data show no evidence for a possible neutrino point-like source or for possible correlations between gamma ray bursts and neutrinos. They have been used to set flux upper limits for candidate point-like sources which are in the range 10^-14-10^-15 cm-2 s-1., Comment: 37 pages, 15 figures, replacement due to a typo in tab. 6, AASLaTex, submitted to ApJ

A search for lightly ionizing particles has been performed with the MACRO detector. This search was sensitive to particles with charges between $\fractional{5}$$e$ and close to the charge of an electron, with $\beta$ between approximately 0.25 and 1.0. Unlike previous searches both single track events and tracks buried within high multiplicity muon showers were examined. In a period of approximately one year no candidates were observed. Assuming an isotropic flux, for the single track sample this corresponds to a 90% C.L. upper flux limit $\Phi \leq 9.2 \times 10^{-15} cm^{-2} sec^{-1} sr^{-1}$ ., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, to be submitted to Phys. We present the measurement of two event samples induced by atmospheric $\nu_\mu$ of average energy $ \bar {E}_\nu \sim 4 GeV$. In the first sample, the neutrino interacts inside the MACRO detector producing an upward-going muon leaving the apparatus. The ratio of the number of observed to expected events is $ 0.57 \pm0.05_{stat} \pm0.06_{syst} \pm0.14_{theor}$ with an angular distribution similar to that expected from the Bartol atmospheric neutrino flux. The second is a mixed sample of internally produced downward-going muons and externally produced upward-going muons stopping inside the detector. These two subsamples are selected by topological criteria; the lack of timing information makes it impossible to distinguish stopping from downgoing muons. The ratio of the number of observed to expected events is $0.71 \pm 0.05_{stat} \pm0.07_{syst} \pm0.18_{theor}$ . Using the ratio of the two subsamples (for which most theoretical uncertainties cancel) we can test the pathlength dependence of the oscillation hypothesis. The probability of agreement with the no-oscillation hypothesis is 5% . The deviations of our observations from the expectations has a preferred interpretation in terms of $\nu_\mu$ oscillations with maximal mixing and $\Delta m^2 \sim 10^{-3} \div 10^{-2} eV^2$. These parameters are in agreement with our results from upward throughgoing muons, induced by $\nu_\mu$ of much higher energies., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures. Submitted to Phys. Lett. B

We perform an indirect search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) using the MACRO detector to look for neutrino-induced upward-going muons resulting from the annihilation of WIMPs trapped in the Sun and Earth. The search is conducted in various angular cones centered on the Sun and Earth to accommodate a range of WIMP masses. No significant excess over the background from atmospheric neutrinos is seen and limits are placed on the upward-going muon fluxes from Sun and Earth. These limits are used to constrain neutralino particle parameters from supersymmetric theory, including those suggested by recent results from DAMA/NaI., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, submitted to Phys. We present a measurement of the underground decoherence function using multi-muon events observed in the MACRO detector at Gran Sasso at an average depth of 3800 hg/cm**2. Muon pair separations up to 70 m have been measured, corresponding to parent mesons with P_t < 1-2GeV/c. The accuracy of the measurement is such that the possible contribution of rare processes, such as mu + N ----> mu + N + mu- + mu+, can be experimentally studied. The measured decoherence function is compared with the predictions of the hadronic interaction model of the HEMAS Monte Carlo code. Good agreement is obtained. We interpret this agreement to indicate that no anomalous P_t components in soft hadron-Nucleus and Nucleus-Nucleus collisions are required by the MACRO experimental data., 38 pages, Latex, 10 figures, Corrected typos

Using data collected by the MACRO experiment during the years 1989-1996, we show evidence for the shadow of the moon in the underground cosmic ray flux with a significance of 3.6 sigma. This detection of the shadowing effect is the first by an underground detector. A maximum-likelihood analysis is used to determine that the angular resolution of the apparatus is 0.9+/-0.3 degrees. These results demonstrate MACRO's capabilities as a muon telescope by confirming its absolute pointing ability and quantifying its angular resolution., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures Submitted to Phys. The application of the method of predetermined currents, which takes into account bends in a circuit, for the purpose of calculating the transient response of the improved GET 178-2010 field-forming standard is considered. The input assembly in the field-forming system was changed, which made it possible to reproduce the standard pulses of an electromagnetic field with rise time up to 10 psec. The expanded uncertainty of reproduction of the units did not exceed 2.4% in the steady state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MACRO is designed to make a multiply redundant search for GUT magnetic monopoles over a wide velocity range. The 100 MHz pulse height recorder and synchronous encoder (PHRASE) and the energy reconstruction processor (ERP) are two components of that search, both based on the MACRO liquid scintillator. They are sensitive to monopoles with or without captured nuclei in the range beta similar to 10(-3) to beta similar to 1, Here, the performance of these systems is discussed, including also analysis methods and background evaluations.

Using 5.33 x 10(6) single muons collected in 1.46 x 10(4) live hours by MACRO during the period 1991-1994, we have searched for a correlation between variations in the underground muon rate, N-mu, and seasonal temperature variations in the atmosphere. These correlations are found to be present with high statistical significance. Analysis of the relatively complete December 1992-December 1994 subset of the data yields a value for the temperature coefficient, alpha(T) = (T/N-mu)(partial derivative N-mu/partial derivative T) = 0.83 +/- 0.13. Analysis of the total data Set gives consistent results. We have compared this result with the hypothesis that the muons observed in MACRO come from pion decays alone. Although our result is consistent with the 'pion only' hypothesis, a discussion of the sensitivity of our data sample to the kaon component of the cascades leading to observed muons underground will also be presented. Multimuon data from the MACRO experiment at Gran Sasso have been analyzed using a new method, which allows one to estimate the primary cosmic ray fluxes. The estimated all-particle spectrum is higher and flatter than the one obtained from direct measurements but is consistent with EAS array measurements. The spectral indexes of the fitted energy spectrum are 2.56[Formula presented]0.05 for [Formula presented]500 TeV and 2.9[Formula presented]0.3 for [Formula presented]5000 TeV with a gradual change at intermediate energies. The average mass number shows little dependence on the primary energy below 1000 TeV, with a value of 10.1[Formula presented]2.5 at 100 TeV. At higher energies the best fit average mass shows a mild increase with energy, even though no definite conclusion can be reached taking into account errors. The fitted spectra cover a range from [Formula presented] 50 TeV up to several thousand TeV. © 1997 The American Physical Society.

The vertical underground muon intensity has been measured in the slant depth range 3200-7000 hg cm-2 (standard rock) with the completed lower part of the MACRO detector at the Gran Sasso laboratory, using a large sample of data. These observations are used to compute the surface muon flux and the primary ''all-nucleon'' spectrum. An analysis of systematic uncertainties introduced by the interaction models in the atmosphere and the underground propagation of muons is presented. A comparison of our results with published data is also presented. © 1995 The American Physical Society.

We report on the first measurement of the flux of upgoing muons resulting from interactions of atmospheric neutrinos in the rock below MACRO. The ratio of the observed to the expected number of events integrated over all nadir angles is 0.73 ± .09 stat. ± .06 sys. ± .12 theor. . The flux of upgoing muons as a function of nadir angle is presented and compared to Monte Carlo expectations. At the 90% confidence level, the data are consistent with no neutrino oscillations or some possible oscillation hypothese with the parameters suggested by the Kamiokande contained-event analysis.

A search for slowly moving magnetic monopoles in the cosmic radiation was conducted from October 1989 to November 1991 using the large liquid scintillator detector subsystem of the first supermodule of the MACRO detector at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory. The absence of candidates established an upper limit on the monopole flux of 5.6×10-15 cm-2 sr-1 s-1 at 90% confidence level in the velocity range of 10-4

We report on the simultaneous observation of atmospheric erenkov light by a prototype five telescope array, GRACE, (Gran Sasso Air erenkov Experiment) with deep underground muons in the MACRO (Monopole Astrophysics and Cosmic Ray Observatory). The telescope array was deployed at Campo Imperatore above the Gran Sasso Laboratory for a run completed in the fall of 1992. The total live time for the combined surface-underground operation was ∼100 h during which more than 300 events were seen in coincidence. The efficacy of this technique to monitor the electromagnetic and penetrating muon components of a cosmic-ray-induced cascade is discussed. © 1994 The American Physical Society.

A study of the primary cosmic ray composition in the energy range 5ṡ1014−5ṡ1015 eV is performed through the analysis of the deep underground muons and of the e.m. component of Extensive Air Showers detected in coincidence by the MACRO and EAS-TOP experiments at the Gran Sasso Laboratory. We conclude that: a) pure proton and Iron primary beams are excluded by the experimental data; b) a fraction of nuclei heavier than Helium is necessary to explain the experimental data both below and above the knee; c) a mixed composition, obtained a priori from extrapolations of the spectra directly measured below 100 TeV, yields a reasonable account of the observations up to the knee of the primary spectrum.

Fungus-farming (attine) ant agriculture is made up of five known agricultural systems characterized by remarkable symbiont fidelity in which five phylogenetic groups of ants faithfully cultivate five phylogenetic groups of fungi. Here we describe the first case of a lowerattine ant cultivating a higher-attine fungus based on our discovery of a Brazilian population of the relictual fungus-farming ant Apterostigma megacephala, known previously from four stray specimens from Peru and Colombia. We find that A. megacephala is the sole surviving representative of an ancient lineage that diverged +39 million years ago, very early in the +55-million-year evolution of fungusfarming ants. Contrary to all previously known patterns of ant-fungus symbiont fidelity, A. megacephala cultivates Leucoagaricus gongylophorus, a highly domesticated fungal cultivar that originated only 2-8 million years ago in the gardens of the highly derived and recently evolved (+12 million years ago) leaf-cutting ants. Because no other lower fungus-farming ant is known to cultivate any of the higherattine fungi, let alone the leaf-cutter fungus, A. megacephala may provide important clues about the biological mechanisms constraining the otherwise seemingly obligate ant-fungus associations that characterize attine ant agriculture. An optoacoustical gravitational detector that structurally combines the principles of interferometric and solid-state gravitational antennas is described. A large acoustical resonator, which is matched to a commensurate Fabry-Perot (FP) optical interferometer, serves as the sensitive element for recording changes in the gravitational-field gradient. In a test experiment, the spectral density of recorded spatial deformations (metric variations) was 10 Hz at a frequency of ∼1.3 kHz within a band of ∼4 Hz, which can be extended by an order of magnitude upon a corresponding increase in the sharpness of the interferometer mirrors. The new antenna is designed for detecting relativistic catastrophes (collapses) in the Galaxy and the nearest vicinity during complex (multichannel) monitoring with neutrino telescopes of the Baksan Neutrino Observatory of the Institute for Nuclear Research, Russian Academy of Sciences. A statistical threshold meter of shaper-discriminators, used in detectors of the Baksan Underground Scintillation Telescope, is described. The device is based on an ATmega103 microprocessor. The principle of operation and block diagram of the device are given. The application of the device reduced the adjustment time of the shaper-discriminators by a factor of dozens, and, in addition, due to the use of statistical methods in the program code of the microprocessor, the threshold adjustment accuracy went up by a factor of 2.5 as compared to the previous adjustment method. The device allows one to diagnose faults in electronics of the anode and 12th dynode circuits and to distinguish photoelectron multiplier tubes with high noise levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
