The measurements of solar radiation for Bogotá city represent a challenge because for this city complete measurements of the types of radiation do not exist, in the laboratory of the group of Alternative Energies of the Francisco José de Caldas Distrital University in Bogotá have come developing investigations related to the matter, being made by an equipment for the solar measurement. Within the investigation advanced by the group the validation was made and fits of the constants of the models: Hottel, Orgill & Hollands, Liu-Jordan, Page, Iqbal and ASHRAE from the collected data using the mentioned equipment previously. Abstract

Measuring magnetic impulses caused by different physical systems is a process, which requires quick-response devices to the signals generated, and which can extract the necessary information to establish relationships and dependences between the variables and characteristic of the system. With the help of a data acquisition system, we measured the intensity of the magnetic impulses generated by a magnet that falls inside a glass tube, inside which was poured a liquid; the group is made to pass by an inductance. Using water, oil, and glycerin we show how the amplitude of the signal obtained can be a function of the properties of these liquids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The article reports on regeneration of tree species and restoration under constrasted Mediterranean habitats. Understanding the processes of tree population recruitment and their limitations is the scientific basis to assure the forest natural regeneration, and to improve techniques of restoration and afforestation. Current forest policy in Europe has shifted the emphasis from multi objective to sustainable forestry. Sustainability is a complex issue that requires simultaneous action at all levels of biological organization, from the genetic to the landscape. The Mediterranean Basin has been much deforested in historical times. The climatic change, agricultural clearance, exploitation for timber and fuel, wars and invasions, fire and overgrazing, have been cited as main agents of deforestation in the region. In Spain, a country of about 505,000 km, at the western end of the Mediterranean Basin, the forested land occupies a 28 percent, but only a 0.2 percent can be considered as natural or seminatural. The regeneration of existing tree populations in Mediterranean areas can be impeded by a lack of recruitment due to several causes, such as the scarce production and dispersion of seeds, and the high mortality of seedlings. The severity of summer drought, and the overgrazing by domestic and wild herbivores are main causes of this mortality.

208. Effect of the medium pH on the release of secondary metabolites from roots of Datura stramonium, Catharanthus roseus, and Tagetes patula cultured in vitro.

Abstract

The release of alkaloids from root cultures Datura stramonium and Catharanthus roseus and thiophenes from root cultures of Tagetes patula was found to increase when the pH of the culture media (ranging from 4.8 to 7.0) was reduced to 3.5. The extent of the effect was different in each type of culture. Increases ranged from 4- to 20-fold, which in some cases accounted for 75% of the total secondary metabolite pool produced per flask. When the release of individual metabolites was measured, even larger increases, were observed (nearly 400-fold for ajmalicine). Increased release of alkaloids from C. roseus roots were also observed in cultures growing in a 14-L fermentor, when the medium pH was reduced. Reduction of the pH of the media did not affect growth of the root cultures in subsequent subcultures. The importance of this treatment as a stategy to improve the recovery of secondary metabolites from producing cultures is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

209. Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome type B with tachycardia-dependent (phase 3) block in the accessory pathway and in left bundle-branch coexisting with rate-unrelated right bundle-branch block.

Abstract

A patient with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome type B developed 2:1 atrioventricular block resulting from the association of persistent right bundle-branch block with tachycardia-dependent (phase 3) left bundle-branch block. Electrophysiological studies disclosed the coexistence of a tachycardia-dependent (phase 3) block in the accessory pathway. This conduction disturbance was exposed, not by carotid sinus massage as in previous studies, but by pacing-induced prolongation of the interval between two consecutively conducted atrial impulses. Furthermore, the surface electrocardiogram showed, at different times, ventricular complexes resulting from: (1) exclusive atrioventricular conduction through the normal pathway without bundle-branch block; (2) predominant, or exclusive, atrioventricular conduction through a right-sided accessory pathway; (3) exclusive atrioventricular conduction through the normal pathway with right bundle-branch block; (4) exclusive conduction through the normal pathway, with left bundle-branch block; (5) fusion between (1) and (2); and finally, (6) fusion between (2) and (3) However, QRS complexes resulting from simultaneously occurring Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome type B and left bundle-branch block could not be identified. Future electrophysiological investigations should re-evaluate the criteria used to diffrentiate between true and false patterns of Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome type B coexisting with left bundle-branch block. 210. Evaluation of intracardiac recordings in diagnosis of impulse formation and concealed conduction in atrioventricular nodal bypass tracts.

Abstract

Invasive electrophysiological studies were performed in 2 symptomatic patients with recurrent arrhythmias in which impulse formation presumably occured within atrioventricular nodal bypass tracts. Case 1 had ectopic beats arising within, or close to, the upper end of a left-sided atrioventricular nodal bypass tract of the type described by Brechenmacher. In addition, this conduction was 'concealed' during sinus rhythm and right atrial pacing because the relatively prolonged right-to-left atrial conduction time allowed right atrial impulses to reach the His bundle via the atrioventricular node before they could do so through the atrioventricular nodal bypass tract. Case 2 had ectopic beats arising in a right-sided atrioventricular nodal bypass tract which did not conduct in either forward or retrograde directions, its presence being detected only when initiating impulses. However, it could not be determined whether this tract was an 'abnormal' atrio-His connection or a 'normal' transitional (atrio-atrioventricular nodal) tract. Abstract

Bioassay-guided chromatographic separation of the antimycobacterial extract of the leaves of Piper sanctum afforded 14 new compounds, identified as 2-oxo-12-(3‘,4‘-methylenedioxyphenyl)dodecane (1), 2-oxo-14-(3‘,4‘-methylenedioxyphenyl)tetradecane (2), 2-oxo-16-(3‘,4‘-methylenedioxyphenyl)hexadecane (3), 2-oxo-18-(3‘,4‘-methylenedioxyphenyl)octadecane (4), 2-oxo-14-(3‘,4‘-methylenedioxyphenyl)-trans-13-tetradecene (5), 2-oxo-16-(3‘,4‘-methylenedioxyphenyl)-trans-15-hexadecene (6), 2-oxo-18-(3‘,4‘-methylenedioxyphenyl)-trans-17-octadecene (7), 2-oxo-16-phenyl-trans-3-hexadecene (8), methyl [6-(10-phenyldecanyl)tetrahydropyran-2-yl]acetate (9), methyl 2-(6-tridecyltetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-yl)acetate (10), methyl 2-(5-tetradecyltetrahydro-2-furanyl)acetate (11), 2-oxo-14-(3‘,4‘-methylenedioxyphenyl)-trans-3-tetradecene (12), 2-oxo-16-(3‘,4‘-methylenedioxyphenyl)-trans-3-hexadecene (13), and 2-oxo-16-phenyl-3-hexadecane (14). In addition, p-eugenol (15), methyleugenol (16), Z-piperolide (17), demethoxyyangonin (18), 5,6-dehydro-7,8-dihydromethysticin (19), cepharanone B (20), piperolactam A (21), cepharadione B (22), N-trans-feruloyltyramine (23), and N-trans-(p-coumaroyl)tyramine (24) were obtained from the anti-TBC stem extract of the plant. GC-MS and HPLC analyses of the essential oils of the leaves and stem revealed that safrol (25) was the major component of the oils. Compounds 2, 3, 6, 18−21, and 24 inhibited the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis when tested by the MABA assay, with MIC values ranging from 4 to 64 μg/mL.

Abstract

With the intention of determining the presence of E. coli 0157 in foods, in the North zone of the Sabana of Bogotá, 300 artisan meat and milky product samples were analyzed. For their isolation and identification two techniques were used; a traditional one where after six hours of incubation in water peptonada to suplementada 1% with novobiocina (20 mg!L) boards of agar Mac Conkey Sorbitol inoculated. By means of this technique Esclzericlzia coli 0157 from a single sample (0.33%) of 300 analyzed the corresponding one to a meat derivative (hamburger); also E. coli in 1.6% was identified. Sirnultaneously a fast technique with Fluorocult, Agar for E. coli O 157: H7 and of the three hundred isolated samples microorganisms like Esclzericlzia coli 0157 (0.33%), E. coli (25%), Slzigella sonnei (10%), E. aerogenes (9%), P. mirabilis ( 4% ). Of the two tried techniques these presented/displayed the same percentage of recovery of Esclzericlzia coli 0157. The fast method, using Fluorocult, Agar for E. coli 0157: H7 allowed to obtain presuntivos results in 24 hours and confirrning results in 48 hours. In resistance the traditional method using to agar Mac Conkey Sorbitol allowed to obtain presuntivos results in 24 hours and confirmíng results in five days. The methods and used techníques allow that thís study can reproduce easily with precise results.

Abstract

The present study was conducted to identify the antifungal activity of phenolic compounds extracted from the mangrove, Rhizophora mangle against the Fusarium verticillioides isolates DA42, F64 and PO3. The total phenolic content was calculated using the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The in vitro inhibition test was performed according to the poisoned food technique. Stem extracts had the highest total phenolic content (9.5 mg gallic acid equivalents/g dry biomass) and displayed major inhibition percentages against all Fusarium verticillioides isolates. Furthermore, the concentration of the stem extract required to inhibit the three fungal isolates by 50 %, is 2 to 3 times greater on average than that required for leaf and root extracts. This study demonstrated the inhibitory activity of ethanol extracts of Rhizophora mangle roots, stems and leaves against different isolates of Fusarium verticillioides. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Purpose: We have previously demonstrated that multi-line transmit (MLT) beam forming can provide high quality full field-of-view (90° sector) B-mode images at very high frame rates, i.e. up to 500 fps. The purpose of this study was to test the feasibility of this technique in imaging the mechanical intraventricular waves such as the one associated with activation of the left ventricle. Methods: A dedicated pulse sequence using MLT was implemented on the ULA-OP research scanner equipped with a 2.0 MHz phased array to obtain 90° sector images at a frame rate of 436 fps. The left ventricle of a healthy volunteer was imaged from the apical 4 chamber view and the RF data was acquired. Subsequently, the strain rate was extracted from the RF data using a normalized cross-correlation method. Results: As expected, during the early filling phase, myocardium lengthening (positive strain rate) was observed propagating from the base of the septum to the apex and back (Figure a). A similar wave was detected in the lateral wall, although a brief shortening (negative strain rate) was detected in the mid-wall which could be the result of reverberations (Figure b). During isovolumetric contraction, the septal wall shortened before the lateral wall (as expected) - moreover - there seemed to be an intra-wall base-apex shortening gradient (Figure c and d). Conclusions: Our preliminary results show that visualization of the cardiac mechanical activation could be feasible using MLT based high frame rate imaging. Abstract

American cutaneous leishmaniasis is an important endemic zoonotic disease in the New World that comprises a spectrum of clinical manifestations. Diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis (DCL) is a rare form of the disease characterized by antigen-specific immunodeficiency that often presents with multiple disfiguring non-ulcerated confluent nodules or plaques that involve large areas of the skin, resembling lepromatous leprosy. Relapse is invariable in advanced stages, despite aggressive chemotherapy, and a plethora of drugs has been tested with unchanging results. We report on a severe an exceptional case that resolved after treatment with amphotericin B, a drug considered only mildly effective, and discuss the therapeutic approach to this disease.
