In its first judgment, the Constitutional Court of Saint Martin reviewed the constitutionality of the island’s new penal code in the light of both the government’s positive obligation to ensure the welfare of animals and the Strasbourg Court’s Vinter decision which calls into question the legitimacy of life imprisonment. In doing so, the Court could show the way to courts in The Netherlands and abroad, both for its acceptance of judicial review of statute law against fundamental social rights and its openness towards the European Court of Human Rights’ jurisprudence. In addition, the Court managed to strike a convincing balance between an all-too-conservative form of judicial restraint on the one hand, and excessive interference in political matters on the other.

- Abstract
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaled breath may identify the presence of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis. We aimed to detect VOC profiles emitted by in vitro cultured, clinical Aspergillus isolates using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Three clinical Aspergillus isolates and a reference strain were cultured while conidiation was prevented. Headspace samples were analyzed using a standardized method. Breath samples of patients from which the cultures were obtained were checked for the presence of the VOCs found in vitro. Each Aspergillus isolate produced a distinct VOC profile. These profiles could not be confirmed in exhaled breath in vivo.

- Abstract
Drell-Yan lepton pairs produced in the process p (p) over bar -> l(+)l(-) + X through an intermediate gamma*/Z boson have an asymmetry in their angular distribution related to the spontaneous symmetry breaking of the electroweak force and the associated mixing of its neutral gauge bosons. The CDF and D0 experiments have measured the effective-leptonic electroweak mixing parameter sin(2) theta(lept)(eff) using electron and muon pairs selected from the full Tevatron proton-antiproton data sets collected in 2001-2011, corresponding to 9-10 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity. The combination of these measurements yields the most precise result from hadron colliders, sin(2)theta(lept)(eff) = 0.23148 +/- 0.00033. This result is consistent with, and approaches in precision, the best measurements from electron-positron colliders. The standard model inference of the on-shell electroweak mixing parameter sin(2) theta(W), or equivalently the W-boson mass M-W, using the ZFITTER software package yields sin(2) theta(W) = 0.22324 +/- 0.00033 or equivalently, M-W = 80.367 +/- 0.017 GeV/c(2).

- Abstract
The CDF and D0 experiments at the Fermilab Tevatron have measured the asymmetry between yields of forward- and backward-produced top and antitop quarks based on their rapidity difference and the asymmetry between their decay leptons. These measurements use the full data sets collected in proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 1.96 TeV. We report the results of combinations of the inclusive asymmetries and their differential dependencies on relevant kinematic quantities. The combined inclusive asymmetry is A(FB)(t (t) over bar) = 0.128 +/- 0.025. The combined inclusive and differential asymmetries are consistent with recent standard model predictions.

- Abstract
Radboud University, 20 februari 2018, Promotores : Ernste, H., Krabben, E. van der Co-promotor : Dormans, S.E.M., Contains fulltext : 183214.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access), In depopulating regions governments often are faced with an accumulation of planning challenges: economic and population decline, budget cuts, no or little development opportunities and an increasing ageing and lower educated population. This complicates the process of developing future oriented spatial plans. Citizens in meanwhile have to deal with the consequences of these challenges and a lack of adequate spatial policies. Some communities therefore decided to take over planning responsibilities from local governments. They have developed and implemented their own future visions, and build sports accommodations for the youth, community centres to enhance social cohesion or touristic facilities to promote economic growth. This PhD-research concerns informal and community-led planning practices in depopulating areas across Europe (Galicia, Spain; Östergötland, Sweden; De Achterhoek, The Netherlands). This research is aimed at gaining a better understanding of how local communities plan (in informal ways), and how their planning activities relate to governmental (statutory) planning. In my thesis I showed that communities can be very successful in developing plans in their own informal ways. However, they do this often in a context that is also dominated by government-led planning, and often need support that can only be provided by local governments (room for manoeuvre to implement plans, funding, facilitation in the case of complex bureaucracies). Governments in their turn cannot make tailor-made, locally supported and budget-proof plans without the involvement of active communities and increasingly outsource tasks (in explicit and implicit ways) towards a local level.

- Abstract

- Abstract
'When it bleeds, it leads' is nog steeds een succesformule voor massamedia.

- Abstract
As part of a worldwide survey of the indoor mycobiota about 520 new Cladosporium isolates from indoor environments mainly collected in China, Europe, New Zealand, North America and South Africa were investigated by using a polyphasic approach to determine their species identity. All Cladosporium species occurring in indoor environments are fully described and illustrated. Fourty-six Cladosporium species are treated of which 16 species are introduced as new. A key for the most common Cladosporium species isolated from indoor environments is provided. Cladosporium halotolerans proved to be the most frequently isolated Cladosporium species indoors.

- Abstract

- Abstract
The CDF and D0 experiments at the Fermilab Tevatron have measured the asymmetry between yields of forward- and backward-produced top and antitop quarks based on their rapidity difference and the asymmetry between their decay leptons. These measurements use the full data sets collected in proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of √s =1.96 TeV. We report the results of combinations of the inclusive asymmetries and their differential dependencies on relevant kinematic quantities. The combined inclusive asymmetry is A[subscript FB][subscript tt[over ¯]]=0.128±0.025. The combined inclusive and differential asymmetries are consistent with recent standard model predictions.

Planning research has increasingly recognised that planning in depopulating areas differs from planning in growth areas. Several studies have sought to identify planning theories and strategies that are capable of meeting the challenges presented by depopulating areas. However, most of these studies and strategies are based on dense urban environments. This paper seeks to add to planning theory and practice by focusing on informal planning practices in rural depopulating areas. Starting from a resource-based view, the paper introduces an analytical framework that allows a systematic examination of the resources that are generated through informal planning practices in such areas.

Topological insulators are ideally represented as having an insulating bulk with topologically protected, spin-textured surface states. However, it is increasingly becoming clear that these surface transport channels can be accompanied by a finite conducting bulk, as well as additional topologically trivial surface states. To investigate these parallel conduction transport channels, we studied Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in Bi$_2$Se$_3$ thin films, in high magnetic fields up to 30 T so as to access channels with a lower mobility. We identify a clear Zeeman-split bulk contribution to the oscillations from a comparison between the charge-carrier densities extracted from the magnetoresistance and the oscillations. Furthermore, our analyses indicate the presence of a two-dimensional state and signatures of additional states the origin of which cannot be conclusively determined. Our findings underpin the necessity of theoretical studies on the origin of and the interplay between these parallel conduction channels for a careful analysis of the material's performance., Manuscript including supplemental material

Young rabbits and guinea pigs are often purchased as pets for children and may be infected with zoonotic skin infections. To assess the risk of acquiring such an infection from rabbits or guinea pigs, this study investigated the prevalence of the fungus Trichophyton mentagrophytes and the fur mite Cheyletiella parasitovorax in asymptomatic rabbits and guinea pigs in Dutch pet shops. In 91 pet shops a total of 213 rabbits and 179 guinea pigs were sampled using the Mackenzie technique and cultured. Clean cultures were examined microscopically and a PCR was performed on at least one sample from each pet shop. All animals were investigated for fur mite using a flea comb, a magnifying glass and white paper. From the fur of 3.8% (8/213) of the rabbits and 16.8% (30/179) of the guinea pigs, T. mentagrophytes was isolated. From 1 guinea pig (0,6%) Chrysosporium keratinophilum was isolated. Dermatophyte-positive rabbits and guinea pigs originated from 5.6% (5/90) and 27.3% (24/88) of the investigated pet shops, respectively. Fur mites were not found. Pet shops can play an important role in preventing transmission of zoonotic ringworm infections (dermatophytosis) and educating their customers. Specific preventive measures such as routine screening examinations and (prophylactic) treatment of rabbits and guinea pigs are recommended next to regular hygiene when handling animals.

We measure a difference in the yield of B- and B+ mesons in these decays by fitting the reconstructed invariant mass distributions. This results in an asymmetry of AμD0=[-0.14±0.20]%, which is consistent with standard model predictions. Made available in DSpace on 2022-04-28T19:05:46Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2017-01-09 We present a measurement of top quark polarization in tt- pair production in pp- collisions at s=1.96 TeV using data corresponding to 9.7 fb-1 of integrated luminosity recorded with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We consider final states containing a lepton and at least three jets. The polarization is measured through the distribution of lepton angles along three axes: the beam axis, the helicity axis, and the transverse axis normal to the tt- production plane. This is the first measurement of top quark polarization at the Tevatron using lepton+jet final states and the first measurement of the transverse polarization in tt- production. The observed distributions are consistent with standard model predictions of nearly no polarization. The production of cellulase by the yellowish orange sclerotia producing species, Aspergillus melleus UPAR01 on lignocellulosic material by solid state fermentation (SSF) was investigated. The first experiment was conducted to find out the colony radial growth rate (Kr) of fungus on solid medium using potato dextrose agar (PDA) and incubated at 30°C in the dark. The result shows that the average Kr value of A. mellues strain approximately was 0.77±0.03 cm/day. When the fungus was used to produce cellulase using maize crop residues as the sole carbon source by SSF at 30°C for seven day, the values of FPase, endoglucanase, b-glucosidase, and xylanase were achieved at 0.284±0.04, 9.45±0.33, 1.20±0.12, 12.58±0.08 U/mg protein, respectively. The optimal pH and temperature (°C) for the enzymatic activities was expressed by response surface methodology (RSM). The data shows that the optimum pH range was between 5.5 and 5.8 and the optimum temperature ranged from 53 to 59°C. In addition, none of the metal ions and ethylene-diaminetetra-acetic acid (EDTA) induced cellulase and xylanase activities. Key words: Aspergillus melleus, cellulase, solid state fermentation (SSF), maize crop residues.

Context. Acute chemical incidents can have substantial public health consequences in terms of morbidity and mortality. Objective. We aimed to characterize acute chemical incidents and near-misses in the Netherlands and compare the results with previous studies. This review is a first step in evaluating whether Physiologically Based Pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models can be of value in acute chemical incidents. Material and methods. Government, regional, municipal and University Hospital Institutes involved in the management of acute chemical incidents in the Netherlands were contacted, and they provided data between 2008 and 2010 on the characteristics and consequences of the incidents. The study is a retrospective epidemiological study based on data from five institutes. Incidents involving biological agents or radiation were excluded. Results. A total of 764 reports were available which involved 722 incidents after cross-matching the different sources of data. Forty incidents were excluded, leaving 682 incidents for which information was available in accordance with the inclusion criteria. Of the 682 incidents included in this study, most occurred in non-industrial buildings (37%) or industrial sites (34%). The most frequently observed event types were loss of containment (60%) and fire (36%), leading to gas emission (54%), followed by spill of liquid or solid chemicals (36%). The chemicals involved were most often products of combustion (e.g. smoke, soot, particles, 25%) and volatile organic compounds (e.g. solvents, styrene, xylene, 23%), followed by inorganic gases (e.g. carbon monoxide, hydrogen, hydrogen sulphide, 13%). A minimum of 847 people experienced adverse health effects following exposure during a chemical incident, and 10 fatalities were reported. The most frequently reported symptoms were respiratory (27%), due to irritant chemicals. The number of incidents related to fire and the number of injured people were higher in this study than in previous studies; 49% of the injured were transported to hospital. Discussion. This study helps to identify which chemicals are frequently involved in acute chemical incidents in the Netherlands. The results will be used in future to assess whether PBPK models may be useful for risk assessment of chemicals often involved in acute chemical incidents and for which human toxicological and kinetic data are scarce.

Background: In medical physiology, educators and students face a serious challenge termed misconceptions. Misconceptions are incorrect ideas that do not match current scientific views. Accordingly, they have shown to hamper teaching and learning of physiological concepts. Conceptual Change Theory forms the basis of new teaching and learning practices that may alleviate misconceptions and facilitate critical thinking skills that are essential in becoming knowledgeable, self-regulated health professionals. In this study, we examined if such an intervention named refutation texts, could enhance medical students' cognition and metacognition. Methods: First-year medical students (N = 161) performed a pre-test and post-test on cardiovascular physiology concepts, including a self-perceived confidence rating. In between, students read either a standard text with an explanation of the correct answer, or a refutation text which additionally refuted related misconceptions. Results: In both groups, average performance scores (refutation: + 22.5%, standard: + 22.8%) and overall confidence ratings (refutation: Δ0.42 out of 5, standard: Δ0.35 out of 5) increased significantly (all p <.001), but a significant effect of the specific refutation element was not found. Initially incorrect answers were corrected less frequently in cases of high confidence (35.8%) than low confidence (61.4%). Conclusions: Our results showed that refutation texts significantly increased students' knowledge, however, the refutation element did not have a significant additional effect. Furthermore, high confidence in incorrect answers negatively affected the likelihood of correction. These findings provide implications for teaching practices on concept learning, by showing that educators should take into account the key role of metacognition, and the nature of misconceptions. - Abstract
Aspergillus section Aspergillus (formerly the genus Eurotium) includes xerophilic species with uniseriate conidiophores, globose to subglobose vesicles, green conidia and yellow, thin walled eurotium-like ascomata with hyaline, lenticular ascospores. In the present study, a polyphasic approach using morphological characters, extrolites, physiological characters and phylogeny was applied to investigate the taxonomy of this section. Over 500 strains from various culture collections and new isolates obtained from indoor environments and a wide range of substrates all over the world were identified using calmodulin gene sequencing. Of these, 163 isolates were subjected to molecular phylogenetic analyses using sequences of ITS rDNA, partial β-tubulin (BenA), calmodulin (CaM) and RNA polymerase II second largest subunit (RPB2) genes. Colony characteristics were documented on eight cultivation media, growth parameters at three incubation temperatures were recorded and micromorphology was examined using light microscopy as well as scanning electron microscopy to illustrate and characterise each species. Many specific extrolites were extracted and identified from cultures, including echinulins, epiheveadrides, auroglaucins and anthraquinone bisanthrons, and to be consistent in strains of nearly all species. Other extrolites are species-specific, and thus valuable for identification. Several extrolites show antioxidant effects, which may be nutritionally beneficial in food and beverages. Important mycotoxins in the strict sense, such as sterigmatocystin, aflatoxins, ochratoxins, citrinin were not detected despite previous reports on their production in this section. Adopting a polyphasic approach, 31 species are recognised, including nine new species. ITS is highly conserved in this section and does not distinguish species. All species can be differentiated using CaM or RPB2 sequences. For BenA, Aspergillus brunneus and A. niveoglaucus share identical sequences. Ascospores an

- Abstract
Generation of neuronal cultures from induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) serve the studies of human brain disorders. However we lack neuronal networks with balanced excitatory- inhibitory activities, which are suitable for single cell analysis. We generated low-density networks of hPSC-derived GABAergic and glutamatergic cortical neurons. We used two different co-culture models with astrocytes. We show that these cultures have balanced excitatory-inhibitory synaptic identities using confocal microscopy, electrophysiological recordings, calcium imaging and mRNA analysis. These simple and robust protocols offer the opportunity for single-cell to multi-level analysis of patient hiPSC-derived cortical excitatory- inhibitory networks; thereby creating advanced tools to study disease mechanisms underlying neurodevelopmental disorders., QC 20170621

- Abstract
We present a measurement of top quark polarization in t (t) over bar pair production in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.96 TeV using data corresponding to 9.7 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity recorded with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We consider final states containing a lepton and at least three jets. The polarization is measured through the distribution of lepton angles along three axes: the beam axis, the helicity axis, and the transverse axis normal to the t (t) over bar production plane. This is the first measurement of top quark polarization at the Tevatron using lepton + jet final states and the first measurement of the transverse polarization in t (t) over bar production. The observed distributions are consistent with standard model predictions of nearly no polarization.

- Abstract
We present the first measurement of the CP violating charge asymmetry in B-+/- -> mu(+/-)nu D-mu(0) decays using the full Run II integrated luminosity of 10.4 fb(-1) in proton-antiproton collisions collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We measure a difference in the yield of B- and B+ mesons in these decays by fitting the reconstructed invariant mass distributions. This results in an asymmetry of A(mu D0) = [-0.14 +/- 0.20] %, which is consistent with standard model predictions.

- Abstract
We present a combination of measurements of the top quark mass by the D0 experiment in the lepton + jets and dilepton channels. We use all the data collected in Run I (1992-1996) at root s = 1.8 TeV and Run II (2001-2011) at root s = 1.96 TeV of the Tevatron p (p) over bar collider, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 0.1 fb(-1) and 9.7 fb(-1), respectively. The combined result is: m(t) = 174.95 +/- 0.40(stat)+/- 0.64(syst) GeV = 174.95 +/- 0.75 GeV.

- Abstract
Introduction: The aim of this study was to determine efficacy of a cognitive training (CT) intervention. We investigated whether CT improved objective (neuropsychological tasks) and subjective (self-perceived) cognitive functioning in 19 Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients. Furthermore, we investigated whether specific cognitive domains or neuropsychiatric measures showed an association with subjective cognitive complaints (SCCs). Methods: During eight weeks, participants completed three 45-minute training sessions a week. Pre- and post-intervention performance and SCCs were compared. Results: The intervention did not reduce SCCs. Objective task performance improved on three out of six neuropsychological tests (fluency, attention and verbal episodic memory). The results demonstrated a positive relationship between neuropsychiatric measures and SCCs. Discussion: Several objective outcome measures pointed in a positive direction. However, since this was a pilot study, we only investigated a small sample. CT may be a valuable tool in managing cognitive decline in PD, but RCTs in larger patient groups are required.
