Abstract

To power our communities’ portable electronics and to electrify the transport sector, electric energy storage (ESE), which takes the form of batteries and electrochemical condensers, is commonly used. Another EES application combining this technology and renewable power sources such as solar and wind to power the electricity grid was introduced by the evolving requirement to overhaul the energy grid in many developed countries together with the projected growth of worldwide energy consumption in the coming decades. A major need for energy storage is generated by the fluctuation in demand for electricity and unreliable energy supply from renewable sources, such as the solar sector and the wind. Current storage techniques like batteries or supercapacitors are either short in terms of electricity production or of their energy storage capacity. The pseudocapacitors incorporate all features to allow the power supply to be balanced. The load and discharge rates are high and can store far more power than a supercapacitor. Electrochemical energy storage is based on systems that can be used to view high energy density (batteries) or power density (electrochemical condensers). Current and near-future applications are increasingly required in which high energy and high power densities are required in the same material. Pseudocapacity, a faradaic system of redox reactions to the ground or close to the surface, provides a way to achieve high energy density at high load discharge rates. When markets for digital consumer products and electrical transport grow and energy storage technology for renewable energy sources begins to emerge, EES will continue to be relevant. There is a need for vast amounts of power to be instant, within seconds or minutes, in particular for transport and storage applications for the grid. Although the required power density is possible with carbon-based electrochemical capacitors, their relatively small energy density limits their usefulness. This chapter discusses for the first time fundamental electrochemical theories and the basic measurement methods used to describe capacitive characteristics. This chapter may give descriptions of how pseudocapacitive materials can be used, based on these basic characteristics.

Abstract

The exponential growth of intermittent renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar, and the global energy efficiency decarbonization campaign, are mainly driving increased interest in the storage of electrical energy. Current global electrical grid networks, however, are not capable of managing mass convergence of intermittent energy sources without significant network interruptions. The grid network is also accepted that more than 20% of intermittent renewable penitence can be significantly destabilized. Naturally, large-scale electricity storage technology can reduce the many intrinsic failures and weaknesses of the grid system, help improve grid efficacy, fully integrate intermittent renewable resources, and efficiently manage energy production. Electric energy storage provides two more critical advantages. First, it decouples electricity generation from the load- or energy user and simplifies the management of supply and demands. Second, it allows distributed storage opportunities for local grids or microgrids which greatly improve grid security and thus energy safety. This chapter aims to provide an extensive overview of a wide portfolio of techniques, equipment, and systems for the storage of electrical energy, and to present the latest advancement and difficulties that have yet to be overcome. Moreover, the chapter describes the status of storage techniques for mechanical, thermal, electrochemical, and chemical energy. It also offers background data on basic values for the interested nonexpert, where applicable, at the tutorial level. This chapter is expected to be of interest to both uninitiated and active researchers and engineers involved in energy storage techniques, with specific emphasis on large-scale storage of electrical energy.

Abstract

Polymer-based insulators offer major benefits as compared to customary insulators. In the current research, efforts are conducted to enumerate the effect of µATH (Micro Aluminum Trihydrate) and nSiO2 (Nano silicon Di-oxide) fillers loading on to electrical, mechanical, thermal, and tracking resistance properties of Silicone Rubber-RTV/µATH@nSiO2 micro/nano composites for high voltage insulation. The UV-vis and FESEM characterizations were conducted to see the optical behavior and uniform dispersion of all fillers into base material before and after mixing. The prepared composites A, B, and C with wt.% concentrations of the 100% Silicone rubber, (15 wt.%µATH@Silicone rubber), and (15 wt.% µATH@nSiO2@Silicone rubber) respectively were tested for electrical, mechanical, thermal, and tracking resistance properties measurements. The characterization result for all samples A, B, and C indicates that all micro and nanocomposites had high voltage insulation characteristics with the loading of micro and nanofillers in pure silicone rubber. Silicone rubber was been mixed with varying concentrations of (15 wt.%µATH@Silicone rubber) and (15 wt.% µATH@nSiO2@silicone rubber) by using a roll milling sulfur cure system. The outcome that arises from the present research highlighted that the dielectric breakdown has increased with micro and nanofiller loadings which are about 120KV, 179KV, and 190KV for samples A, B, and C correspondingly. Similarly, the surface resistivity was noticed (3.3 × 1014, 5.5 × 1014, and 8.4 × 1014) Ω/Square for all three samples A, B, and C sequentially. Also, the volume resistivity was been recorded as (1.14 × 1014, 4.5 × 1014, and 9.8 × 1014) Ω-cm-Square for all three samples accordingly. Based on all experimental results, it has been concluded that sample C with nSiO2 fillers loadings showed improved electrical, mechanical, thermal, and tracking resistance properties as compares to other samples and suitable for high voltage outdoor applications. 216. Electronic structure, elastic and magnetic properties of the binary intermetallics RFe2 (R = Eu, Gd and Tb).

Abstract

Laves-phase (C15) binary intermetallics RFe2 (R = Eu, Gd and Tb) are studied using various potentials in the domain of density functional theory (DFT). These intermetallics are highly correlated electron systems, and the hybrid functional is found to be an effective tool for properly studying these systems. The calculated structural parameters are in close agreement with the experimental values. A decrease in the lattice constants is observed sequentially in the order Eu → Gd → Tb due to the lanthanide shielding effect. The electronic band profiles demonstrate that all these compounds are metallic. The electrical resistivity values confirm the DFT band profiles and reveal that these intermetallics are good conductors. The calculated elastic properties reveal the incompressible and ductile nature of the compounds. The optimized energies in different magnetic phases by DFT and magnetic susceptibility by post-DFT calculations demonstrate the ferromagnetic nature of these intermetallics. Abstract

Structural, electronic, elastic and magnetic properties of Ln3QIn (Ln = Ce, Pr and Nd; Q = C and N) anti-perovskites were studied using density functional theory. The measured structural parameters were much reliable with experiments and decreased with the contraction of atomic radii of R and Q atoms. Electronic properties show that the overlapping of Ln-f states around the Fermi level is responsible for the metallic property of these compounds. The electrical resistivity of these compounds shows that the compounds under study show good conductivity at 25°C. Elastic properties of these compounds show that they are mechanically stable with an anisotropic and ductile nature. Magnetic susceptibility and magnetic ordering show that all the compounds are A-type antiferromagnetic, having Neel temperatures of 9 K to 12 K, respectively. Due to the antiferromagnetic nature of these compounds, magnetic probes are unable to read the data stored in the antiferromagnetic moments, and data remains unaffected through disturbing magnetic fields. Abstract

We use an unprecedented ensemble of regional climate model (RCM) projections over seven regional CORDEX domains to provide, for the first time, an RCM-based global view of monsoon changes at various levels of increased greenhouse gas (GHG) forcing. All regional simulations are conducted using RegCM4 at a 25 km horizontal grid spacing using lateral and lower boundary forcing from three General Circulation Models (GCMs), which are part of the fifth phase of the Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project (CMIP5). Each simulation covers the period from 1970 through 2100 under two Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP2.6 and RCP8.5). Regional climate simulations exhibit high fidelity in capturing key characteristics of precipitation and atmospheric dynamics across monsoon regions in the historical period. In the future period, regional monsoons exhibit a spatially robust delay in the monsoon onset, an increase in seasonality, and a reduction in the rainy season length at higher levels of radiative forcing. All regions with substantial delays in the monsoon onset exhibit a decrease in pre-monsoon precipitation, indicating a strong connection between pre-monsoon drying and a shift in the monsoon onset. The weakening of latent heat driven atmospheric warming during the pre-monsoon period delays the overturning of atmospheric subsidence in the monsoon regions, which defers their transitioning into deep convective states. Monsoon changes under the RCP2.6 scenario are mostly within the baseline variability. © 2020, The Author(s).

Abstract

Coronavirus (CoV) belongs to the genus beta coronavirus with its high mutation rate within the family Coronoviridae. The virus is extremely transmittable and its pathogenicity caused infection like SARS-CoV-2. An epidemic of this novel coronavirus was first documented in Wuhan, Hubei province of China in December 2019 and is thus called as COVID-19. A series of pneumonia reports were confirmed and now the cases are escalated throughout the world. Although transmission of this virus from animals to humans is rare, however this new strain most likely came from bats and pangolins. COVID-19 has infected more than 4.5 million people (4,543,060) as of May 15th 2020, 09:50 GMT worldwide and rises continuously, caused the death of 303,707 so far. Till date no vaccine is available to combat this dreadful virus. Though, certain antiviral drugs have being assisted against COVID-19, which results some success. With the fast spread all over the world, fear and panic is gripping people around the globe. It leads to social stigma towards affected people and physiologically hurts by creating more fear. Need of the time is the collective efforts of all developed countries along with WHO to fight against this dreadful virus. The frontline clinicians, public health authorities and epidemiologists must need to come together to stop this infection and save the precious lives. Since the present virus is new to science, therefore in this review, an attempt has been made to establish some facts related to this novel coronavirus from the existing literature.

Abstract

Plasmodium falciparum RH5 is a secreted parasite ligand that is essential for erythrocyte invasion through direct interaction with the host erythrocyte receptor basigin. RH5 forms a tripartite complex with two other secreted parasite proteins, CyRPA and RIPR, and is tethered to the surface of the parasite through membrane-anchored P113. Antibodies against RH5, CyRPA, and RIPR can inhibit parasite invasion, suggesting that vaccines containing these three components have the potential to prevent blood-stage malaria. To further explore the role of the P113-RH5 interaction, we selected monoclonal antibodies against P113 that were either inhibitory or noninhibitory for RH5 binding. Using a Fab fragment as a crystallization chaperone, we determined the crystal structure of the RH5 binding region of P113 and showed that it is composed of two domains with structural similarities to rhamnose-binding lectins. We identified the RH5 binding site on P113 by using a combination of hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry and site-directed mutagenesis. We found that a monoclonal antibody to P113 that bound to this interface and inhibited the RH5-P113 interaction did not inhibit parasite blood-stage growth. These findings provide further structural information on the protein interactions of RH5 and will be helpful in guiding the development of blood-stage malaria vaccines that target RH5.IMPORTANCE Malaria is a deadly infectious disease primarily caused by the parasite Plasmodium falciparum It remains a major global health problem, and there is no highly effective vaccine. Abstract

Reduced graphene oxide-cobalt oxide nanocube@gold (rGO-Co 3 O 4 @Au) nanocomposite was prepared using a one-pot hydrothermal synthesis. The nanocomposite was characterized using the UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) mapping, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman analyses. The EDX mapping analysis showed the uniform distribution of Au nanoparticles on the Co 3 O 4 surface that made the surface more roughness. The higher degree of reduction of GO was confirmed from the increased intensity ratio of the D and G bands (I D /I G ) of the Raman spectrum during the hydrothermal synthesis. The rGO-Co 3 O 4 @Au nanocomposite exhibited good electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of hydrazine in phosphate buffer (pH 7.2). The detection of hydrazine was carried out using amperometry technique and the current response was linear in the range of 10–620 μM. The limit of detection was found to be 0.443 μM. The selectivity of the nanocomposite for the sensing of hydrazine was studied with the interferents such as NO 3 − , SO 4 2− , Cl − , Ag + , Na + , K + , ethanol, 4-nitrophenol, ascorbic acid and glucose. The sensing of different concentration of hydrazine present in the real water samples was analysed and an appreciable recovery was found.

Abstract

In the realm of DFT, the optoelectronic and thermoelectric properties of Zintl phase XIn2Z2 (X = Ca, Sr and Z = As, Sb) compounds are studied in P63/mmc symmetry. The estimated structural properties are well agreement with the experimental work. Their cohesive energy and enthalpy demonstrate the thermodynamic stability of these compounds. X In2As2 compounds are direct bandgap semiconductors at Г symmetry, XIn2Sb2 compounds are indirect bandgap semiconductors at M symmetry, according to electronic characteristics. The direct bandgap values range from 0.209 to 0.894 eV, whereas the indirect bandgaps lies in rang of 0.211–0.281 eV. With the replacement of As with Sb, not only the transition of bandgap occurs from direct to indirect and also decrease the bandgap of the understudy compounds. All of the substances are optically active in the infrared range of the electromagnetic spectrum, based on their optical properties. The optical characteristics suggest that they could be employed in optoelectronic devices. Due to low band gap and high value of ZT of the compound SrIn2Sb2; it is more suitable for thermoelectric applications then the rest compounds. The thermoelectric properties indicate that they are helpful as active thermoelectric materials in the fields of thermoelectric cooling, thermoelectric power production for wearable systems, thermoelectric Peltier micro coolers, and thermoelectric generation, as well as nano-thermocouples.
