203. Transitions of epitaxially lifted-off bulk GaAs and GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well under thermal-induced compressive and tensile strain.

Abstract

Low temperature photoluminescence and reflectance measurements on epitaxially lifted-off (ELO) bulk GaAs and GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum wells (MQWs) bonded to Si and MgO substrates are reported. Photoluminescence measurements indicate no strain at room temperature for the ELO bulk GaAs film but show biaxial strain at 10 K. Si-bonded films undergo tensile strain, while films with MgO host substrates experience compressive strain. Reflectance measurements at 10 K show that light hole band is closer to the conduction band for the tensile strained film. In GaAs MQW ELO films, the separation of the heavy hole and light hole band is reduced in tensile strained films by 4.7 meV, corresponding to a strain [variant_greek_epsilon]=-0.7±0.05×10-3 and stress X=0.9±0.05 kbar (90±5 MPa). For compressively strained films, this separation is enhanced by 3.9 meV, equivalent to a strain [variant_greek_epsilon]=0.6±0.05×10-3 and X=0.8±0.05×10-3 kbar (80±5 MPa). The findings demonstrate that ELO is an effective technique to introduce tensile and compressive strain in GaAs heterostructures and is appropriate for strain-related spectroscopy. Abstract

We report the effects of variations in As4 growth flux on the evolution of molecular beam epitaxy grown InAs quantum dots (QDs) and their structures and optical properties. For InAs QDs grown under As-stable conditions, evaluated through photoluminescence and atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements, it is evident that QD size increases with As4 pressure along with improvement in size uniformity. Furthermore, transmission electron microscopy measurements for InAs layers of critical thicknesses (∼1.7 ML) showed decreasing QD density with increasing As4 pressure accompanied by a strong reduction in photoluminescence (PL) integral intensity. These show that high As4 fluxes suppress InAs QD formation while the decreasing PL intensity seems to indicate cluster formation that features nonradiative recombination. AFM measurements show larger and denser QDs for samples grown at higher As4 pressures. These are explained on the basis of adatom condensation during surface cooling and the influence of As4 pressure on indium incorporation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The major strengthening mechanisms in bainitic steels arise from the bainitic ferrite plate thickness rather than the length, which primarily determines the mean free slip distance. Both the strength of the austenite from where the bainite grows and the driving force of the transformation, are the two factors controlling the final scale of the bainitic microstructure. Usually, those two parameters can be tailored by means of selection of chemical composition and transformation temperature. However, there is also the possibility of introducing plastic deformation on austenite and prior to the bainitic transformation as a way to enhance both the austenite strength and the driving force for the transformation; the latter by introducing a mechanical component to the free energy change. This process, known as ausforming, has awoken a great deal of interest and it is the object of ongoing research with two clear aims. First, an acceleration of the sluggish bainitic transformation observed typically in high C steels (0.7–1 wt. %) transformed at relatively low temperatures. Second, to extend the concept of nanostructured bainite from those of high C steels to much lower C contents, 0.4–0.5 wt. %, keeping a wider range of applications in view.

Abstract

The electrical conductivity and thermoelectric power of random networks of carbon nanotube (CNT) films are tuned by using a layer-by-layer polymer coating method of the individual nanotubes. The excellent control over the conductivity and the possibility of using the polymer coating as a gate dielectric material is vital for developing a scalable approach for fabricating CNT-based thin film transistors.

Abstract

Background Dapoxetine hydrochloride is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor and the first drug approved for the on-demand treatment of premature ejaculation (PE). Its safety was established in a thorough clinical development program. Objective To characterize the safety profile of dapoxetine in PE treatment and to report the incidence, severity, and type of adverse events. Design, setting, and participants We conducted a 12-wk, open-label, observational study with a 4-wk, postobservational contact. A total of 10 028 patients were enrolled, with 6712 patients (67.6%) treated with dapoxetine 30–60mg (group A)and 3316 (32.4%) treated with alternative care/nondapoxetine (group B). Interventions Treatment with dapoxetine or alternative care/nondapoxetine. Outcome measurements and statistical analysis Treatment-emergent adverse events (TEAEs) and concomitant therapy use during the 12-wk observational and the postobservational period were reported. Results and limitations The mean age for all patients was 40.5 yr. In group A, 93.0% of the patients were initially prescribed dapoxetine 30mg. Treatment options for group B patients included clomipramine, paroxetine, fluoxetine, sertraline, topical drugs, condoms, and behavioral counseling. Both treatment regimens were well tolerated. TEAEs were reported by 12.0% and 8.9% of group A and group B, respectively, with the highest incidence observed in patients aged >65 yr for group A (21.4%) and 30–39 yr (9.8%) for group B. The most commonly reported TEAEs were nausea, headache, and vertigo, with a higher incidence in group A (3.1%, 2.6%, and 1.0%, respectively) than in group B (oral drugs: 2.3%, 1.3%, and 0.9%, respectively). There were no cases of syncope in group A and one case in group B. A major limitation is that this was a nonrandomized, open-label, short-term study lacking efficacy data. Conclusions The results of this postmarketing observational study demonstrated that dapoxetine for treatment of PE has a good safety profile and low prevalence of TEAEs. Syncope and major cardiovascular adverse events were not reported. The high level of adherence by healthcare providers to the contraindications, special warnings, and precautions for dapoxetine minimizes the risk for its use in routine clinical practice. The current risk minimization measures for its identified and potential risks are effective.

Abstract

The Corpus Oral Informatizado da Lingua Galega (CORILGA) project aims at building a corpus of oral language for Galician, primarily designed to study the linguistic variation and change. This project is currently under development and it is periodically enriched with new contributions. The long-term goal is that all the speech recordings will be enriched with phonetic, syllabic, morphosyntactic, lexical and sentence ELAN-complaint annotations. A way to speed up the process of annotation is to use automatic speech-recognition-based tools tailored to the application. Therefore, CORILGA repository has been enhanced with an automatic alignment tool, available to the administrator of the repository, that aligns speech with an orthographic transcription. In the event that no transcription, or just a partial one, were available, a speech recognizer for Galician is used to generate word and phonetic segmentations. These recognized outputs may contain errors that will have to be manually corrected by the administrator. For assisting this task, the tool also provides an ELAN tier with the confidence measure of each recognized word. In this paper, after the description of the main facts of the CORILGA corpus, the speech alignment and recognition tools are described. Both have been developed using the Kaldi toolkit

Abstract

The thermotropic, physical, and dynamical properties of large unilamellar liposomes formed from either 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC) or 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-[phospho-rac-glycerol] (DMPG) encapsulated in sol-gel matrixes are characterized. The results show that the electrostatic interactions between phospholipid polar heads and the porous surface of the host matrix play a vital role for the preservation of the structural integrity of encapsulated bilayer.

Research demonstrates that the Shaker B potassium channel peptide inserts into the anionic lipid membrane as a monomer and exhibit an intramolecular beta-hairpin structure, whereas the mutant peptide grafts to the membrane surface. Data suggest that the native peptide diffuses in a viscous and anisotropic medium consisten with its aliphatic region of the lipid membrane.

Abstract

This paper evaluates the performance of different types of Regression Trees (RTs) in a real problem of very short-term wind speed prediction from measuring data in wind farms. RT is a solidly established methodology that, contrary to other soft-computing approaches, has been under-explored in problems of wind speed prediction in wind farms. In this paper we comparatively evaluate eight different types of RTs algorithms, and we show that they are able obtain excellent results in real problems of very short-term wind speed prediction, improving existing classical and soft-computing approaches such as multi-linear regression approaches, different types of neural networks and support vector regression algorithms in this problem.We also show that RTs have a very small computation time, that allows the retraining of the algorithms whenever new wind speed data are collected from the measuring towers.

Abstract

A lecture given by Francisca Garcia Caballero, at the Adventures in the Physical Metallurgy of Steels (APMS) conference held in Cambridge University. The atomic mechanism of the bainite transformation is discussed in the context of the highest resolution analytical experiments conceivable. After decades of debate on the mechanism for the formation of bainite, it is accepted that bainite grows via a displacive mechanism i.e., as plate-shaped transformation products exhibiting an invariant plane strain surface relief effect. But there is still much discussion on the diffusion or diffusionless nature of bainite. Elements of the theory are now routinely being used in the design of innovative steels and in the interpretation of a variety of experimental data. However, current experimental and theoretical understanding is limiting technological progress. The purpose of this atom probe tomography study was to track the atom distributions during the bainite reaction in steels with different carbon and silicon contents transformed over a wide range of temperatures (200-525 centigrade) to elucidate the role of reaction rate and diffusion in the formation of bainite with and without cementite precipitation. The results are providing new experimental evidence on subjects critically relevant to the understanding of the atomic mechanisms controlling bainitic ferrite formation, such as the incomplete transformation phenomenon, the carbon supersaturation of ferrite, the plastic accommodation of the surrounding austenite and cluster and carbides formation.

Abstract

Organic anion-transporting polypeptides (OATPs) are involved in the liver uptake of many endogenous and xenobiotic compounds, such as bile acids and drugs, respectively. Using Xenopus laevis oocytes and Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells expressing rat Oatp1a1, human OATP1B1, or OATP1B3, the sensitivity of these transporters to extracellular/intracellular pH (pHo/pHi) and changes in plasma membrane potential (ΔΨ) was investigated. In X. laevis oocytes, nonspecific plasma membrane permeability increased only at pHo below 4.5. Above this value, both using oocytes and CHO cells, extracellular acidification affected differently the specific transport of taurocholic acid (TCA) and estradiol 17β-d-glucuronide (E217βG) by Oatp1a1 (stimulation), OATP1B1 (inhibition), and OATP1B3 (stimulation). Changes in substrate uptake in the presence of valinomycin (K+-ionophore), carbonyl cyanide 3-chlorophenylhydrazone and nigericin (protonophores), and amiloride (Na+/H+-inhibitor) and cation replacement in the medium were studied with fluorescent probes for measuring substrate uptake (cholylglycyl amidofluorescein) and changes in pHi (SNARF-4F) and ΔΨ [DilC1(5)]. The results suggest that activity of these three carriers is sodium/potassium-independent and affected differently by changes in pHo and ΔΨ: Oatp1a1 was confirmed to be an electroneutral anion exchanger, whereas the function of both OATP1B1 and OATP1B3 was markedly affected by the magnitude of ΔΨ. Moreover, electrophysiological measurements revealed the existence of a net anion influx associated to OATP1B1/OATP1B3-mediated transport of TCA, E217βG, and estrone-3-sulfate. Furthermore, a leakage of Na+ through OATP1B1 and OATP1B3, which is not coupled to substrate transport, was found. In conclusion, these results suggest that OATP1B1 and OATP1B3 are electrogenic transporters whose activity may be strongly affected under circumstances of displacement of local pH.

Abstract

At the beginning of the decade of the nineties, the industrial interest for TRIP steels leads to a significant increase of the investigation and application in this field. In this work, the flexibility of neural networks for the modelling of complex properties is used to tackle the problem of determining the retained austenite content in TRIP-steel. Applying a combination of two learning algorithms (backpropagation and creeping-random-search) for the neural network, a model has been created that enables the prediction of retained austenite in low-Si / low-Al multiphase steels as a function of processing parameters. A partir de los años noventa, el interés que los aceros TRIP despiertan en la industria ha producido un incremento considerable de su estudio y aplicación. En este trabajo, aprovechando la flexibilidad que las redes neuronales proporcionan para la modelización de propiedades complejas, se ha abordado el problema de la determinación de la austenita retenida en los aceros TRIP. Una combinación de dos algoritmos de aprendizaje (retropropagación y búsqueda aleatoria progresiva) de la red neuronal ha permitido crear un modelo que predice la cantidad de austenita retenida en aceros multifase con bajo contenido en aluminio y silicio en función de los parámetros de procesado.

Abstract

We address the prediction of low-visibility events at airports using machine-learning regression. The proposed model successfully forecasts low-visibility events in terms of the runway visual range at the airport, with the use of support-vector regression, neural networks (multi-layer perceptrons and extreme-learning machines) and Gaussian-process algorithms. We assess the performance of these algorithms based on real data collected at the Valladolid airport, Spain. We also propose a study of the atmospheric variables measured at a nearby tower related to low-visibility atmospheric conditions, since they are considered as the inputs of the different regressors. A pre-processing procedure of these input variables with wavelet transforms is also described. The results show that the proposed machine-learning algorithms are able to predict low-visibility events well. The Gaussian process is the best algorithm among those analyzed, obtaining over 98% of the correct classification rate in low-visibility events when the runway visual range is $${>}$$ 1000 m, and about 80% under this threshold. The performance of all the machine-learning algorithms tested is clearly affected in extreme low-visibility conditions ( $${<}$$ 500 m). However, we show improved results of all the methods when data from a neighbouring meteorological tower are included, and also with a pre-processing scheme using a wavelet transform. Abstract

The influence of vanadium additions on transformation kinetics has been investigated in a medium carbon forging steel. Using dilatometry to track transformation during continuous cooling or isothermal transformation, the impact of vanadium on both ferrite-pearlite and bainite has been quantified. Transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography have been used to establish whether vanadium was present in solid solution, or as clusters and precipitates. The results show that vanadium in solid solution has a pronounced retarding influence on ferrite-pearlite formation and that, unlike in the case of niobium, this effect can be exploited even during relatively slow cooling. The influence on bainite transformation was found to depend on temperature; an explanation in terms of the effect of vanadium on heterogeneous nucleation is tentatively proposed. Abstract

In industry, the cost of production is an important factor and it is preferred to use conventional and low cost procedures for producing the parts. Heat treatment cycles and alloying additions are the key factors affecting the microstructure and mechanical properties of the cast steels. In this study an attempt was made to evaluate the influence of minor Mo addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of conventionally heat treated cast micro-alloyed steels. The results of Jominy and dilatometry tests and also microstructural examinations revealed that Mo could effectively increase the hardenability of the investigated steel and change the microstructure features of the air-cooled samples. Acicular microstructure was the consequence of increasing the hardenability in Mo-added steel. Besides, it was found that Mo could greatly affect the isothermal bainitic transformation and higher fraction of martensite after cooling (from isothermal temperature) was due to the Mo addition. The results of impact test indicated that the microstructure obtained in air-cooled Mo-added steel led to better impact toughness (28J) in comparison with the base steel (23J). Moreover, Mo-added steel possessed higher hardness (291HV), yield (524MPa) and tensile (1108MPa) strengths compared to the base one. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
