The most important reef of the Mediterranean is the Coralligène (Coralligenous = C), including several types of calcareous algal-invertebrate build-ups growing in normal open marine conditions. We analyzed and compared two C samples from the Ligurian Sea developed in different environmental settings: 1) off Portofino on a rocky cliff, at a depth of about 40 m and 2) in front of Bogliasco, on a sub-horizontal substrate at a depth of 10 m. The maximum AMS radiocarbon dating provided an older age for Bogliasco (about 5 ka BP) than for Portofino (about 3.6 ka BP), and the mean accumulation rate of the Portofino build-up (about 80 µm y−1) was found to be higher than the one in Bogliasco (about 65 µm y−1). The different sides of each build-up showed a remarkable heterogeneity in the dominant cover by living organisms, and the comparison between the two build-ups highlighted an evident diversity in their taxonomic composition and structure, although crustose coralline algae (CCA) are the dominant framework builder and major autogenic ecosystem engineers at both localities, in the present as in the past millennia. Other major components of the structure are bryozoans and serpulids, and an important role is played by sediment filling. In Bogliasco, extreme climate events and major peaks of fine matrix and terrigenous grains are observed, lithologically related to the drainage basin of the Poggio creek and associated with charophyte occurrence and reduced CCA abundance. The occurrence of the rare Sporolithon ptychoides was observed both in Portofino at about 750 BCE and in Bogliasco. These Sporolithon phases are likely related to warm and humid spells punctuating the Holocene climate fluctuations in the Ligurian Sea. Because coralline algae are confirmed to be the most important habitat engineer of the Mediterranean reefs, they deserve more attention in the framework of any monitoring initiative aimed at C management and conservation.

Upon aging and exposure to ambient conditions, acrylic colors get dry and the degree of polymerization of the polymer matrix increases due to progressive cross-linking. When interested in studying acrylic colors, separation of the different components, namely matrix, pigments, and fillers, may be particularly useful for their identification and characterization. In the case of aged acrylic colors, as found in artworks themselves or in materials present in artist studios, the separation approaches requiring chemical treatments of fluid samples cannot be applied. To overcome this limit, here a controlled combustion strategy is developed for eliminating the polymer matrix from the color and then recovering a powder made of pigments and fillers, which is analyzed by optical spectroscopy and demonstrated to display the same chromatic/chemical properties of the original color. As a case study, the new method is successfully applied to acrylic colors used by the Italian artist Domenico “Ico” Parisi (1916–1996), found in the original tubes in his studio.

The ratio R = gamma(K-S -> pi e nu)/gamma(KS -> pi(+)pi(-)) has been measured with a sample of 300 million KS mesons produced in phi -KLKS decays recorded by the KLOE experiment at the DA Phi NE e(+)e(-) collider. K-S -> pi e nu events are selected by a boosted decision tree built with kinematic variables and time-of-flight measurements. Data control samples of K-L -> pi e nu decays are used to evaluate signal selection efficiencies. With 49647 +/- 316 signal events we measure R = (1.0421 +/- 0.0066(stat) +/- 0.0075(syst)) x 10(-3). The combination with our previous measurement gives R = (1.0338 +/- 0.0054(stat) +/- 0.0064(syst)) x 10(-3). From this value we derive the branching fraction B(K-S -> pi e nu) = (7.153 +/- 0.037(stat)+/- 0.044(syst)) x 10(-4) and f(+)(0)|V-us| = 0.2170 +/- 0.009.

Tests of the T, CP and CPT symmetries in the neutral kaon system are performed by the direct comparison of the probabilities of a kaon transition process to its symmetry-conjugate. The exchange of in and out states required for a genuine test involving an antiunitary transformation implied by time-reversal is implemented exploiting the entanglement of K0K0 pairs produced at a 0 -factory.A data sample collected by the KLOE experiment at DAONE corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 1.7 fb-1 is analysed to study the At distributions of the 0 -> KSKL -> pi+pi- pi +/- e -/+ v and 0 -> KSKL -> pi +/- e -/+ v3 pi 0 processes, with At the difference of the kaon decay times. A comparison of the measured At distributions in the asymptotic region At â … iS allows to test for the first time T and CPT symmetries in kaon transitions with a precision of few percent, and to observe CP violation with this novel method.

Purpose: The present study connects the literature on sustainable HRM with that on employability to investigate the relationship between sustainability-oriented human resource actions and organizational outcomes. More specifically, this study explores how training for employability affects the employer–employee relationship and employee retention. Furthermore, this study considers competitive intensity as a potential moderator in these relationships. Design/methodology/approach: The analyses draw on the fourth European Company Survey (ECS 2019) with a sample of 21?869 firms with more than ten employees. Two separate logistic regression models were used to test the hypothesis. Findings: The results show that training for employability contributes to improving the employer–employee relationship and that competitive intensity positively shapes this relationship. Contextually, training for employability reduces the overall employee retention of the firm. Originality/value: Although this study supports the potential win–win nature of employability support, especially for companies that operate in competitive markets and an uncertain environment, it also highlights the existence of paradoxical sustainability tensions that should be managed by employers.

With Angle Resolved XRF (AR-XRF) the sample is investigated at different angles of detection and irradiation. The geometry of analysis indeed affects the intensity of the characteristic elemental fluorescence signal of the sample, which depends on the element distribution inside the sample. This technique has already proved to be very useful in analyzing metallic bilayer samples. In this paper, we applied AR-XRF to study a real case in the field of Cultural Heritage, with the analysis of a glazed ceramic coming from Puebla, Mexico. The analysis of the decorations, which present different thicknesses and compositions, has shown the limits of the technique, especially in the case of thick and diffused layers, and the importance of a priori knowledge to retrieve structural information in the case of a complex system with a great number of variables.

Pembrolizumab has received approval as a first-line treatment for unresectable/metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (mTNBC) with a PD-L1 combined positive score (CPS) of ≥ 10. However, assessing CPS in mTNBC poses challenges. Firstly, it represents a novel analysis for breast pathologists. Secondly, the heterogeneity of PD-L1 expression in mTNBC further complicates the assessment. Lastly, the lack of standardized assays and staining platforms adds to the complexity. In KEYNOTE trials, PD-L1 expression was evaluated using the IHC 22C3 pharmDx kit as a companion diagnostic test. However, both the 22C3 pharmDx and VENTANA PD-L1 (SP263) assays are validated for CPS assessment. Consequently, assay-platform choice, staining conditions, and scoring methods can significantly impact the testing outcomes. This consensus paper aims to discuss the intricacies of PD-L1 CPS testing in mTNBC and provide practical recommendations for pathologists. Additionally, we present findings from a nationwide Italian survey elucidating the state-of-the-art in PD-L1 CPS testing in mTNBC.

Enhancing the employment of university students and the development of sustainable careers is at the core of national and supra-national political agendas. This chapter explores how perceived employability relates to subsequent career success among graduate students. Moreover, it investigates the personal and context-related factors influencing student perceptions of employability. Data were collected through a two-wave survey administered between 2021 and 2022 to final-year students at the University of Milano-Bicocca. Results of ordinary least squares regression show that perceived employability is a valid predictor of graduates’ objective and subjective career outcomes. This study also highlights the key role of digital and personal skills development as potential drivers of employability perception among university students. The results of this study contribute to the literature on graduate employability and career success and have implications for the governance and management of higher education institutions.

Background: Programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) checkpoint inhibitors represent a mainstay of therapy in head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC). However, little is known about the influence of combined therapy on PD-L1 expression. The study aims to gather evidence on this topic. Methods: A systematic search was carried out in electronic databases Pubmed-MEDLINE and Embase to retrieve studies on the comparison of PD-L1 expression before and after conventional therapy. Data were extracted and a quantitative analysis with pooled odds ratios (ORs) was performed when applicable. Results: Of 5688 items, 15 were finally included. Only a minority of studies assessed PD-L1 with the recommended combined positive score (CPS). The results are highly heterogeneous, with some studies reporting an increase in PD-L1 expression and others reporting a decrease. Three studies allowed for quantitative analysis and showed a pooled OR of 0.49 (CI 0.27–0.90). Conclusions: From the present evidence, a clear conclusion towards an increase or decrease in PD-L1 expression after combined therapy cannot be drawn, but even with few studies available, a trend towards an increase in expression in tumor cells at a cutoff of 1% can be noted in patients undergoing platinum-based therapy. Future studies will provide more robust data on the effect of combined therapy on PD-L1 expression.

Angle resolved XRF (AR-XRF) is an analytical technique in which the sample is analyzed at different angles of detection or irradiation. The change in the geometry affects the intensity of the elemental characteristic emission from the sample, which depends on the in-depth distribution of analyte. In this paper, for the first time, we apply AR-XRF to gilding samples that mime real cultural heritage ones. The samples analysed, also investigated with scanning electron microscopy, present small lateral inhomogeneities and a rough surface. Moreover, we illustrate how to analyze AR-XRF data, from the collection of XRF spectra to the creation of AR-XRF profiles and the fitting of data using Sherman's equation. Using AR-XRF combined with the fundamental parameters method we calculate the massive thickness of laboratory made layered samples.

Background: Numerous studies showed that methylation analysis represents a newly developed urinary marker based on DNA methylation changes in a panel of genomic biomarkers and it could represent a valid tool in terms of the diagnosis and prediction of high-grade urothelial carcinoma recurrences. One of the limits of the use of this new molecular method during a follow-up is represented by the number of invalid tests in routine practice. Method: A total of 782 patients with a diagnosis of non-muscle-invasive high-grade carcinoma (NMIBC) was studied. The Bladder EpiCheck test (BE) was performed together with cytology in all cases within 1 year after the end of treatment. In 402 patients, the urinary samples were voided urine (UV), while, in 380 cases, the samples were collected after bladder washing (IU). For all the patients with invalid BE results, a second BE test was performed following the instructions for use that indicated the test should be repeated with a new urinary sample in the case of an invalid result. Results: Analyzing the two different groups (UV and IU), we found the invalid BE results seemed to be not related to urinary samples (p = 0.13 Fisher’s exact test), suggesting that the collection method was not relevant in order to reduce the number of invalid tests. Conclusions: In the follow-up for NMIBC, for patients for whom a BE test is planned, a combined approach of cytology and a methylation test is recommended in order to repeat the BE test with an invalid result only in those cases with a cytological diagnosis of atypical urothelial cells (AUC) suspicious for high-grade urothelial carcinoma (SHGUC) and high-grade urothelial carcinoma (HGUC).

Primary central nervous system (CNS) extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (MZBL) is a rare low-grade non-Hodgkin lymphoma, characterised predominantly by small B cells, plasma cells, monocytoid cells and scattered large immunoblasts. Primary CNS MZBL is a slow-growing tumour that remains localised and is characterised by an excellent clinical prognosis. The present study describes the case of a 48-year-old HIV-negative female patient with a history of head trauma 1 year prior, who presented with worsening neurological symptoms and a magnetic resonance imaging finding of a ∼3-cm extra-axial mass within the left lateral ventricle. From histopathology and immunohistochemistry, the lesion was diagnosed as a CNS MZBL; as no other primary lesions were found, the base of the choroid plexuses of the left lateral ventricle was considered the primary site. To the best of our knowledge, the current case is the first study to report on primary CNS MZBL arising in this anatomical site and paves the way for further studies on the role of chronic inflammation (in the present case resulting from trauma) in the pathogenesis not only of primary CNS MZBL but also of lymphoma in general. Additionally, this report could serve as a starting point for studies analysing the role of meningothelial cells in the pathogenesis of primary CNS MZBL.
