The characterization of the dust polarization foreground to the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) is a necessary step towards the detection of the B-mode signal associated with primordial gravitational waves. We present a method to simulate maps of polarized dust emission on the sphere, similarly to what is done for the CMB anisotropies. This method builds on the understanding of Galactic polarization stemming from the analysis of Planck data. It relates the dust polarization sky to the structure of the Galactic magnetic field and its coupling with interstellar matter and turbulence. The Galactic magnetic field is modelled as a superposition of a mean uniform field and a random component with a power-law power spectrum of exponent $\alpha_{\rm M}$. The model parameters are constrained to fit the power spectra of dust polarization EE, BB and TE measured using Planck data. We find that the slopes of the E and B power spectra of dust polarization are matched for $\alpha_{\rm M} = -2.5$. The model allows us to compute multiple realizations of the Stokes Q and U maps for different realizations of the random component of the magnetic field, and to quantify the variance of dust polarization spectra for any given sky area outside of the Galactic plane. The simulations reproduce the scaling relation between the dust polarization power and the mean total dust intensity including the observed dispersion around the mean relation. We also propose a method to carry out multi-frequency simulations including the decorrelation measured recently by Planck, using a given covariance matrix of the polarization maps. These simulations are well suited to optimize component separation methods and to quantify the confidence with which the dust and CMB B-modes can be separated in present and future experiments. The Planck survey has quantified polarized Galactic foregrounds and established that they are a main limiting factor in the quest for the cosmic microwave background (CMB) B-mode signal induced by primordial gravitational waves during cosmic inflation. Accurate separation of the Galactic foregrounds therefore binds this quest to our understanding of the magnetized interstellar medium (ISM). The two most relevant empirical results from analysis of Planck data are line of sight depolarization arising from fluctuations of the Galactic magnetic field orientation and alignment of filamentary dust structures with the magnetic field at high Galactic latitude. Furthermore, Planck and HI emission data in combination indicate that most of the filamentary dust structures are in the cold neutral medium. The goal of this paper is to test whether these salient observational results, taken together, can account fully for the statistical properties of the dust polarization over a selected low column density region comprising 34 % of the southern Galactic cap ($b \le -30\deg$). To do this, we construct a dust model that incorporates HI column density maps as tracers of the dust intensity structures and a phenomenological description of the Galactic magnetic field. By adjusting the parameters of the dust model, we were able to reproduce the Planck dust observations at 353 GHz in the selected region. Polarized thermal emission from interstellar dust grains can be used to map magnetic fields in star forming molecular clouds and the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM). The Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope for Polarimetry (BLASTPol) flew from Antarctica in 2010 and 2012 and produced degree-scale polarization maps of several nearby molecular clouds with arcminute resolution. The success of BLASTPol has motivated a next-generation instrument, BLAST-TNG, which will use more than 3000 linear polarization sensitive microwave kinetic inductance detectors (MKIDs) combined with a 2.5m diameter carbon fiber primary mirror to make diffraction-limited observations at 250, 350, and 500 $\mu$m. With 16 times the mapping speed of BLASTPol, sub-arcminute resolution, and a longer flight time, BLAST-TNG will be able to examine nearby molecular clouds and the diffuse galactic dust polarization spectrum in unprecedented detail. The 250 $\mu$m detector array has been integrated into the new cryogenic receiver, and is undergoing testing to establish the optical and polarization characteristics of the instrument. BLAST-TNG will demonstrate the effectiveness of kilo-pixel MKID arrays for applications in submillimeter astronomy. We present a large-scale combination of near-infrared (near-IR) interstellar polarization data from background starlight with polarized emission data at submillimeter (sub-mm) wavelengths for the Vela C molecular cloud. The near-IR data consist of more than 6700 detections probing a range of visual extinctions between $2$ and $20\,$mag in and around the cloud. The sub-mm data was collected in Antartica by the Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope for Polarimetry (BLASTPol). This is the first direct combination of near-IR and sub-mm polarization data for a molecular cloud aimed at measuring the "polarization efficiency ratio" ($R_{\mathrm{eff}}$), a quantity that is expected to depend only on grain intrinsic physical properties. It is defined as $p_{500}/(p_{I}/\tau_{V})$, where $p_{500}$ and $p_{I}$ are polarization fractions at $500\,\mu$m and $I$-band, respectively, and $\tau_{V}$ is the optical depth. To ensure that the same column density of material is producing both polarization from emission and from extinction, we conducted a careful selection of near-background stars using 2MASS, $Herschel$ and $Planck$ data. This selection excludes objects contaminated by the Galactic diffuse background material as well as objects located in the foreground. Accounting for statistical and systematic uncertainties, we estimate an average $R_{\mathrm{eff}}$ value of $2.4\pm0.8$, which can be used to test the predictions of dust grain models designed for molecular clouds when such predictions become available. $R_{\mathrm{eff}}$ appears to be relatively flat as a function of the cloud depth for the range of visual extinctions probed., Comment: 23 pages, accepted by the Astrophysical Journal

We propose Mstab, a novel Krylov subspace recycling method for the iterative solution of sequences of linear systems with fixed system matrix and changing right-hand sides. This new method is a straight and simple generalization of IDRstab. IDRstab in turn is a very efficient method and generalization of BiCGStab. The theory of Mstab is based on a generalization of the IDR theorem and Sonneveld spaces. Numerical experiments indicate that Mstab can solve sequences of linear systems faster than its corresponding IDRstab variant. We present a new short-recurrence reaidual-optimal Krylov subspace recycling method for sequences of Hermitian systems of linear equations with a fixed system matrix and changing right-hand sides. Such sequences of linear systems occur while solving, e.g., discretized time-dependent partial differential equations. With this new method it is possible to recycle large-dimensional Krylov-subspaces with smaller computational overhead and storage requirements compared to current Krylov subspace recycling methods as e.g. R-MINRES. In this paper we derive the method from the residual-optimal preconditioned conjugate residual method and duscuss implementation issues. Polarization maps of the Vela C molecular cloud were obtained at 250, 350, and 500um during the 2012 flight of the balloon-borne telescope BLASTPol. These measurements are used in conjunction with 850um data from Planck to study the submillimeter spectrum of the polarization fraction for this cloud. The spectrum is relatively flat and does not exhibit a pronounced minimum at \lambda ~350um as suggested by previous measurements of other molecular clouds. The shape of the spectrum does not depend strongly on the radiative environment of the dust, as quantified by the column density or the dust temperature obtained from Herschel data. The polarization ratios observed in Vela C are consistent with a model of a porous clumpy molecular cloud being uniformly heated by the interstellar radiation field., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures

We present results for Vela C obtained during the 2012 flight of the Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope for Polarimetry (BLASTPol). We mapped polarized intensity across almost the entire extent of this giant molecular cloud, in bands centered at 250, 350, and 500 {\mu}m. In this initial paper, we show our 500 {\mu}m data smoothed to a resolution of 2.5 arcminutes (approximately 0.5 pc). We show that the mean level of the fractional polarization p and most of its spatial variations can be accounted for using an empirical three-parameter power-law fit, p = p_0 N^(-0.4) S^(-0.6), where N is the hydrogen column density and S is the polarization-angle dispersion on 0.5 pc scales. The decrease of p with increasing S is expected because changes in the magnetic field direction within the cloud volume sampled by each measurement will lead to cancellation of polarization signals. The decrease of p with increasing N might be caused by the same effect, if magnetic field disorder increases for high column density sightlines. Alternatively, the intrinsic polarization efficiency of the dust grain population might be lower for material along higher density sightlines. We find no significant correlation between N and S. Comparison of observed submillimeter polarization maps with synthetic polarization maps derived from numerical simulations provides a promising method for testing star formation theories. Realistic simulations should allow for the possibility of variable intrinsic polarization efficiency. We report here a study of gas, dust and star formation rates (SFRs) in the molecular cloud complexes (MCCs) surrounding the giant H$\,{\rm \scriptsize{II}}$ region RCW$\,$106 using $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO$\,$(1-0) data from the Three-mm Ultimate Mopra Milky way Survey (ThrUMMS) and archival data. We separate the emission in the Galactic Plane around $l=330^{\circ}$-$335^{\circ}$ and $b=-1^{\circ}$-$1^{\circ}$ into two main MCCs: the RCW$\,$106 (V$_{\rm LSR} = -48\,$km$\,$s$^{-1}$) complex and the MCC331-90(V$_{\rm LSR} = -90\,$km$\,$s$^{-1}$) complex. While RCW$\,$106 (M$\sim 5.9\times 10^{6}\,$M$_{\odot}$) is located in the Scutum-Centaurus arm at a distance of 3.6$\,$kpc, MCC331-90 (M$\sim 2.8\times 10^{6}\,$M$_{\odot}$) is in the Norma arm at a distance of 5$\,$kpc. Their molecular gas mass surface densities are $\sim220$ and $\sim130\,$M$_{\odot}$ pc$^{-2}$, respectively. For RCW$\,$106 complex, using the 21$\,$cm continuum fluxes and dense clump counting, we obtain an immediate past ($\sim$-0.2$\,$Myr) and an immediate future ($\sim$+0.2$\,$Myr) SFRs of $0.25_{-0.023}^{+0.09}\,$M$_{\odot},{\rm yr}^{-1}$ and $0.12\pm0.1 \,$M$_{\odot}\,{\rm yr}^{-1}$. This results in an immediate past SFR density of $9.5_{-0.9}^{+3.4}\,$M$_{\odot}\,{\rm yr}^{-1}\,{\rm kpc}^{-2}$ and an immediate future SFR density of $4.8_{-3.8}^{+3.8}\,$M$_{\odot}\,{\rm yr}^{-1}\,{\rm kpc}^{-2}$. As both SFRs in this cloud are higher than the ministarburst threshold, they must be undergoing a ministarburst event although burst peak has already passed. We conclude that this is one of the most active star forming complexes in the southern sky, ideal for further investigations of massive star formation and potentially shedding light on the physics of high-redshift starbursts., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ
