Abstract

Rhodobacter sphaeroides has a complex chemosensory system, with several loci encoding multiple homologues of the components required for chemosensing in Escherichia coli. The operons cheOp2 and cheOp3 each encode complete pathways, and both are essential for chemosensing. The components of cheOp2 are predominantly localized to the cell pole, whereas those encoded by cheOp3 are predominantly targeted to a discrete cluster in the cytoplasm. Here we show that the expression of the two pathways is regulated independently. Overlapping promoters recognized by [[sigma].sup.28] and [[sigma].sup.70] RNAP holoenzyme transcribe cheOp2, whereas cheOp3 is regulated by one of the four [[sigma].sup.54] homologues, RpoN3. The different regulation of these operons may reflect the need for balancing responses to extra- and intracellular signals under different growth conditions.

Abstract

This study explored risk factors for violence among a sample of adult women with physical disabilities. Fifty-six percent (100) of the 177 women participating in the study indicated a positive history of abuse. Of the women who reported abuse, most reported multiple abuse situations and abusers who were typically their male partners. In addition, only a small proportion of women sought and received adequate help. Women who indicated that they did not seek help were asked why this was the case. Their responses included: feeling that they could handle it themselves, having other sources of support available, being unaware of where to go, feeling embarrassed, feeling guilty about being a burden or that it was their fault, fear that abuser would come after them, fear of not being believed, and, to a lesser extent, concern that the shelter would lack appropriate accommodations. These findings highlight the importance of intervention strategies including advocacy activities for women with disabilities, activities with schools, activities to deter and prevent partner and caregiver violence, community awareness activities, and dissemination activities.

Abstract

Rhodobacter sphaeroides is a motile bacterium that has multiple chemotaxis genes organized predominantly in three major operons (cheO[p.sub.1], cheO[p.sub.2], and cheO[P.sub.3]). The chemoreceptor proteins are clustered at two distinct locations, the cell poles and in one or more cytoplasmic clusters. One intriguing possibility is that the physically distinct chemoreceptor clusters are each composed of a defined subset of specific chemotaxis proteins, including the chemoreceptors themselves plus specific Chew and CheA proteins. Here we report the subcellular localization of one such protein, Che[A.sub.2], under aerobic and photoheterotrophic growth conditions. Che[A.sub.2] is predominantly clustered and localized at the cell poles under both growth conditions. Furthermore, its localization is dependent upon one or more genes in cheO[p.sub.2] but not those of cheO[p.sub.1] or cheO[p.sub.3]. In E. coli, the polar localization of CheA depends upon CheW. The R. sphaeroides cheO[p.sub.2] contains two chew genes. Interestingly, Che[W.sub.2] is required under both aerobic and photoheterotrophic conditions, whereas Che[W.sub.3] is not required under aerobic conditions but appears to play a modest role under photoheterotrophic conditions. This suggests that R. sphaeroides contains at least two distinct chemotaxis complexes, possibly composed of proteins dedicated for each subcellular location. Furthermore, the composition of these spatially distinct complexes may change under different growth conditions.

Abstract

The nurse practitioner (NP) and physician assistant (PA) professions are rapidly growing. Historically, these professions have filled a health care delivery gap caused by lack of health care access and physician shortages. Many medical practices are more accustomed to adding new physicians as compared with adding new NPs or PAs. This article describes one institution's approach to develop and implement a successful NP/PA onboarding program. Several key components are discussed, including (1) established roles and responsibilities, (2) a clear timeline of the onboarding period including a foundational curriculum, (3) the mentor-mentee relationship, (4) the onboarding checklist, and (5) the onboarding itinerary. The objective was to have our NPs/PAs on a regular patient calendar within the 6-month period. The success rate with this has been 86%. In addition, there has been a 90% retention of NP/PA hires over the past 3 years. The authors believe this approach to NP/PA onboarding serves the patients well, providing excellent patient outcomes and patient experience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The study examines the effect of psychosocial safety climate (PSC) and psychological capital (PsyCap) on customer engagement through discretionary service behaviors including adaptive and proactive service behaviors (ASB and PSB). A field study of 56 managers, 513 service employees, and 560 customers in 56 branches of insurance companies was carried out to test a theoretical model using hierarchical linear modeling (HLM7). The results demonstrated that PsyCap and PSC were both positively associated with ASB and PSB at the individual level. The results also showed that an interaction between PsyCap and PSC was related to ASB but not PSB. This suggested that PsyCap and PSC interact in a synergic manner to affect service employees' engagement in ASB, beyond their direct effects. At the branch level, ASB was not associated with customer engagement behavior, but PSB was. Furthermore, PSB mediated the relationship between PSC and customer engagement behavior, although ASB did not. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
