Abstract

Brannan showed that a normalized univalent polynomial of the form $P(z)=z+a_2 z^2+\ldots + a_{n-1}z^{n-1}+\frac{z^n}{n}$ is starlike if and only if $a_2=\ldots=a_{n-1}=0$. We give a new and simple proof of his result, showing further that it is also equivalent to the membership of $P$ in the Noshiro-Warschawski class of univalent functions whose derivative has positive real part in the disk. Abstract

In recent years, deep learning algorithms have outperformed the state-of-the art methods in several areas thanks to the efficient methods for training and for preventing overfitting, advancement in computer hardware, the availability of vast amount data. The high performance of multi-task deep neural networks in drug discovery has attracted the attention to deep learning algorithms in bioinformatics area. Here, we proposed a hierarchical multi-task deep neural network architecture based on Gene Ontology (GO) terms as a solution to protein function prediction problem and investigated various aspects of the proposed architecture by performing several experiments. First, we showed that there is a positive correlation between performance of the system and the size of training datasets. Second, we investigated whether the level of GO terms on GO hierarchy related to their performance. We showed that there is no relation between the depth of GO terms on GO hierarchy and their performance. In addition, we included all annotations to the training of a set of GO terms to investigate whether including noisy data to the training datasets change the performance of the system. The results showed that including less reliable annotations in training of deep neural networks increased the performance of the low performed GO terms, significantly. We evaluated the performance of the system using hierarchical evaluation method. Mathews correlation coefficient was calculated as 0.75, 0.49 and 0.63 for molecular function, biological process and cellular component categories, respectively. We showed that deep learning algorithms have a great potential in protein function prediction area. We plan to further improve the DEEPred by including other types of annotations from various biological data sources. Abstract

The quality of graphene in nanodevices has increased hugely thanks to the use of hexagonal boron nitride as a supporting layer. This paper studies to which extent hBN together with channel length scaling can be exploited in graphene field effect transistors (GFETs) to get a competitive radio frequency (RF) performance. Carrier mobility and saturation velocity were obtained from an ensemble Monte Carlo simulator that accounted for the relevant scattering mechanisms (intrinsic phonons, scattering with impurities and defects, etc.). This information is fed into a self consistent simulator, which solves the drift diffusion equation coupled with the two dimensional Poisson's equation to take full account of short channel effects. Simulated GFET characteristics were benchmarked against experimental data from our fabricated devices. Our simulations show that scalability is supposed to bring to RF performance an improvement that is, however, highly limited by instability. Despite the possibility of a lower performance, a careful choice of the bias point can avoid instability. Abstract

Background: Internationally, there is an increasing trend in using Rapid Response Systems (RRS) to stabilize in‐patient deterioration. Despite a growing evidence base, there remains limited understanding of the processes in place to aid the early recognition and response to deteriorating children in hospitals across Europe. Aim: To describe the processes in place for early recognition and response to in‐patient deterioration in children in European hospitals. Study Design: A cross‐sectional opportunistic multi‐centre European study, of hospitals with paediatric in‐patients, using a descriptive self‐reported, web‐based survey, was conducted between September 2021 and March 2022. The sampling method used chain referral through members of European and national societies, led by country leads. The survey instrument was an adaptation to the survey of Recognition and Response Systems in Australia. The study received ethics approval. Descriptive analysis and Chi‐squared tests were performed to compare results in European regions. Results: A total of 185 questionnaires from 21 European countries were received. The majority of respondents (n = 153, 83%) reported having written policies, protocols, or guidelines, regarding the measurement of physiological observations. Over half (n = 120, 65%) reported that their hospital uses a Paediatric Early Warning System (PEWS) and 75 (41%) reported having a Rapid Response Team (RRT). Approximately one‐third (38%) reported that their hospital collects specific data about the effectiveness of their RRS, while 100 (54%) reported providing regular training and education to support it. European regional differences existed in PEWS utilization (North = 98%, Centre = 25%, South = 44%, p <.001) and process evaluation (North = 49%, Centre = 6%, South = 36%, p <.001). Conclusions: RRS practices in European hospitals are heterogeneous. Differences in the uptake of PEWS and RRS process evaluation emerged across Europe. Relevance to Clinical Practice: It is important to scope practices for the safe monitoring and management of deteriorating children in hospital across Europe. To reduce variance in practice, a consensus statement endorsed by paediatric and intensive care societies could provide guidance and resources to support PEWS implementation and for the operational governance required for continuous quality improvement. Abstract

Background/Objectives: Early identification of complications in chronic and infectious diseases can reduce clinical deterioration, lead to early therapeutic interventions and lower morbidity and mortality rates. Here, we aimed to assess the feasibility of a novel clinical decision support system (CDSS) based on the automatic generation of alerts through remote patient monitoring and to identify the patient profile associated with the likelihood of severe medical alerts. Methods: A prospective, multicenter, open-label, randomized controlled trial was conducted. Patients with COVID-19 in home isolation were randomly assigned in a 1:1 ratio to receive either conventional primary care telephone follow-up plus access to a mobile app for self-reporting of symptoms (control group) or conventional primary care telephone follow-up plus access to the mobile app for self-reporting of symptoms and wearable devices for real-time telemonitoring of vital signs (case group). Results: A total of 342 patients were randomized, of whom 247 were included in the per-protocol analysis (103 cases and 144 controls). The case group received a more exhaustive follow-up, with a higher number of alerts (61,827 vs. 1825; p < 0.05) but without overloading healthcare professionals thanks to automatic alert management through artificial intelligence. Baseline factors independently associated with the likelihood of a severe alert were having asthma (OR: 1.74, 95% CI: 1.22–2.48, p = 0.002) and taking corticosteroids (OR: 2.28, 95% CI: 1.24–4.2, p = 0.008). Conclusions: The CDSS could be successfully implemented and enabled real-time telemonitoring of patients' clinical status, providing valuable information to physicians and public health agencies. 246. Control of the Field Herbicide Dissipation by Cover Crop Mulch in Conservation Agriculture.

Abstract

The effects of mulch on the dissipation of S-metolachlor-SMOC, foramsulfuron-FORAM, and thiencarbazone-methyl-TCM and the formation of their main degradation metabolites were studied here. The herbicides were jointly applied in preemergence of maize on two separate occasions to two agricultural soils under conventional tillage (CT) and non-tillage (NT) over two wheat-maize cycles. Herbicide concentrations were determined in topsoil samples at different times after both applications, and they were fitted to kinetic models. The half-life (DT50) values for SMOC were higher under CT management than under NT (mean values: 25.6 and 7.38 days, respectively) in both soils over the two years. The faster herbicide dissipation with mulch could be because it is partially intercepted and strongly adsorbed/retained through different potential pathways, especially biodegradation, which was supported by the detection of SMOC-ESA and SMOC-OA metabolites. The mean DT50 values for FORAM (6.15 and 6.07 days, respectively) were very close for both soils under NT and CT management over the two-year experiment. The mulch had a lesser impact than for SMOC due to the former's higher water solubility and lower adsorption, with dissipation being controlled mainly by biodegradation and likely also by leaching. TCM recorded intermediate DT50 values (mean value 20.8 days) in both soils+CT in the two-year experiment compared to SMOC and FORAM. The mulch effect on TCM dissipation was observed only after the second application because the DT50 values were higher in soils+NT after the first application (mean value: 26.9 days) than after the second one (mean value: 5.9 days). The amount of soil surface covered by the mulch controlled the herbicide dissipation, and soil and herbicide properties determine their adsorption behaviour by both mulch and soils. 248. Cocoa and Carob Supplementation, Alone or in Combination with Metformin, Protects against Hepatorenal Injury in Zucker Diabetic Fatty Rats.

Abstract

The liver and kidneys are crucial for glucose homeostasis and are seriously damaged in diabetes. Cocoa and carob possess antidiabetic activity, but their hepatorenal protective effects, especially when combined with antidiabetic drugs, are unknown. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of a cocoa–carob-supplemented diet (CC), either alone or in combination with metformin, on liver and kidney damage in Zucker diabetic fatty (ZDF) rats, a type 2 diabetes model. Male ZDF animals received a control or CC-supplemented diet, with or without metformin, and Zucker lean rats were fed the control diet. The CC-supplemented diet improved glucose tolerance and insulin resistance and alleviated functional and structural alterations in the diabetic liver and renal cortex. The CC-supplemented diet also ameliorated oxidative stress, downregulated apoptosis, and improved insulin signalling and glucose homeostasis. The combination of CC and metformin boosted several benefits as certain parameters related to morphological and structural alterations, apoptosis, oxidative stress, glucose homeostasis, and insulin resistance, were improved in comparison to animals receiving the CC-supplemented diet or metformin alone; these include the following: apoptotic index, Bax, hepatic insulin receptor or glutathione content, among others. These results demonstrate that the CC-supplemented diet alleviates the hepatorenal damage in type 2 diabetic ZDF rats, highlighting its potential alone or as an adjuvant therapy. Abstract

Menstruation remains surrounded by taboo and symbolic violence for many adolescents and young women today, and it is urgent to identify existing stereotypes. The objective was to validate a Spanish-language instrument to assess perceptions, false beliefs, gender stereotypes, fears, and taboos surrounding menstruation in nursing women's studies. A cross-sectional study for psychometric validation of the METCON© scale (22 item version) was assessed in a cohort of 401 female nursing university students (2016–2019), assessing the psychometric properties in terms of internal consistency and structural validity. Furthermore, an invariance analysis was conducted to discern structural disparities before and after studying the subject of gender and health. The METCON© scale showed acceptable internal consistency scores measured by Cronbach's alpha. Exploratory factor analysis indicated a structure of six factors which explained 60.50% of the total variance with a total of 19 items. Reliability analysis indicated adequate internal consistency (α = 0.613). Confirmatory factor analysis showed adequate values, confirming this structure. The invariance analyses identified that the structure remained adequate when evaluated before and after studying the subject of gender and health. Once validated, this instrument could serve as a valid and reliable tool for comprehensively examining perceptions, beliefs, and myths surrounding menstruation, addressing not only biological but also social and cultural aspects. Abstract

Cellular Communication Network Factor 2 (CCN2) is a matricellular protein implicated in cell communication and microenvironmental signaling. Overexpression of CCN2 has been documented in various cardiovascular pathologies, wherein it may exert either deleterious or protective effects depending on the pathological context, thereby suggesting that its role in the cardiovascular system is not yet fully elucidated. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of Ccn2 gene deletion on the progression of acute cardiac injury induced by doxorubicin (DOX), a widely utilized chemotherapeutic agent. To this end, we employed conditional knockout (KO) mice for the Ccn2 gene (CCN2-KO), which were administered DOX and compared to DOX-treated wild-type (WT) control mice. Our findings demonstrated that the ablation of CCN2 ameliorated DOX-induced cardiac dysfunction, as evidenced by improvements in ejection fraction (EF) and fractional shortening (FS) of the left ventricle. Furthermore, DOX-treated CCN2-KO mice exhibited a significant reduction in the gene expression and activation of oxidative stress markers (Hmox1 and Nfe2l2/NRF2) relative to DOX-treated WT controls. Additionally, the deletion of Ccn2 markedly attenuated DOX-induced cardiac fibrosis. Collectively, these results suggest that CCN2 plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of DOX-mediated cardiotoxicity by modulating oxidative stress and fibrotic pathways. These findings provide a novel avenue for future investigations to explore the therapeutic potential of targeting CCN2 in the prevention of DOX-induced cardiac dysfunction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
