Considering the depletion of fossil-fuel reserves and their negative environmental impact, new energy schemes must point towards alternative ecological processes. Efficient hydrogen evolution from water is one promising route towards a renewable energy economy and sustainable development. Here we show a tridimensional electrocatalytic interface, featuring a hierarchical, co-axial arrangement of a palladium/titanium dioxide layer on functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The resulting morphology leads to a merging of the conductive nanocarbon core with the active inorganic phase. A mechanistic synergy is envisioned by a cascade of catalytic events promoting water dissociation, hydride formation and hydrogen evolution. The nanohybrid exhibits a performance exceeding that of state-of-the-art electrocatalysts (turnover frequency of 15000 H 2 per hour at 50 mV overpotential). The Tafel slope of ∼130 mV per decade points to a rate-determining step comprised of water dissociation and formation of hydride. Comparative activities of the isolated components or their physical mixtures demonstrate that the good performance evolves from the synergistic hierarchical structure.

The synthesis of two A2B2 porphyrins, {5,15-bis-[4-(octyloxy)phenyl]-porphyrinato}zinc(ii) () and {5,15-bis-(carbazol-3-yl-ethynyl)-10,20-bis-[4-(octyloxy)phenyl]-porphinato}-zinc(ii) (), is reported. Their photophysical properties were studied by steady-state absorption and emission. Substituting the carbazolylethynyl moieties at two of the meso positions results in a large bathochromic shift of all the absorption bands, a notable increase in the absorption coefficient of the Q(0,0) band, and higher fluorescence quantum yield compared to porphyrin , with two unsubstituted meso positions. Cyclic voltammetry and digital simulation show that electrogenerated radical ions of are more stable than those of . The lack of substituents at the meso positions of leads to dimerization reactions of the radical cation. Despite this, the annihilation reaction of and produces very similar electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) intensity. Spectroelectrochemical experiments demonstrate that the electroreduction of leads to a strong absorption band that might quench the ECL.

Graphene-metal composites have potential as novel catalysts due to their unique electrical properties. Here, we report the synthesis of a composite material comprised of monodispersed platinum nanoparticles on high-quality graphene obtained by using two different exfoliation techniques. The material, prepared via an easy, low-cost and reproducible procedure, was evaluated as an electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction. The turnover frequency at zero overpotential (TOF0 in 0.1 m phosphate buffer, pH 6.8) was determined to be approximately 4600 h(-1). This remarkably high value is likely due to the optimal dispersion of the platinum nanoparticles on the graphene substrate, which enables the material to be loaded with only very small amounts of the noble metal (i.e., Pt) despite the very highly active surface. This study provides a new outlook on the design of novel materials for the development of robust and scalable water-splitting devices.

The electrochemistry, photophysics, and electrochemically generated chemiluminescence (ECL) of a family of polysulfurated dendrimers with a pyrene core have been thoroughly investigated and complemented by theoretical calculations. The redox and luminescence properties of dendrimers are dependent on the generation number. From low to higher generation it is both easier to reduce and oxidize them and the emission efficiency increases along the family, with respect to the polysulfurated pyrene core. The analysis of such data evidences that the formation of the singlet excited state by cation-anion annihilation is an energy-deficient process and, thus, the ECL has been justified through the triplet-triplet annihilation pathway. The study of the dynamics of the ECL emission was achieved both experimentally and theoretically by molecular mechanics and quantum chemical calculations. It has allowed rationalization of a possible mechanism and the experimental dependence of the transient ECL on the dendrimer generation. The theoretically calculated Marcus electron-transfer rate constant compares very well with that obtained by the finite element simulation of the whole ECL mechanism. This highlights the role played by the thioether dendrons in modulating the redox and photophysical properties, responsible for the occurrence and dynamics of the electron transfer involved in the ECL. Monitoring Prostate Cancer (PCa) biomarkers is an efficient way to diagnosis this disease early, since it improves the therapeutic success rate and suppresses PCa patient mortality: for this reason a powerful analytical technique such as electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is already used for this application, but its widespread usability is still hampered by the high cost of commercial ECL equipment. We describe an innovative approach for the selective and sensitive detection of the PCa biomarker sarcosine, obtained by a synergistic ECL-supramolecular approach, in which the free base form of sarcosine acts as co-reagent in a Ru(bpy)3(2+)-ECL process. We used magnetic micro-beads decorated with a supramolecular tetraphosphonate cavitand (Tiiii) for the selective capture of sarcosine hydrochloride in a complex matrix like urine. Sarcosine determination was then obtained with ECL measurements thanks to the complexation properties of Tiiii, with a protocol involving simple pH changes - to drive the capture-release process of sarcosine from the receptor - and magnetic micro-bead technology. With this approach we were able to measure sarcosine in the μM to mM window, a concentration range that encompasses the diagnostic urinary value of sarcosine in healthy subjects and PCa patients, respectively. These results indicate how this ECL-supramolecular approach is extremely promising for the detection of sarcosine and for PCa diagnosis and monitoring, and for the development of portable and more affordable devices.

Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) can image graphene oxide (GO) flakes on insulating and conducting substrates. The contrast between GO and the substrate is controlled by the electrostatic interactions that are established between the charges of the molecular redox mediator and the charges present in the sheet/substrate. SECM also allows quantitative measurement - at the nano/microscale - of the charge transfer kinetics between single monolayer sheets and agent molecules.

The qualitative identification of proteinaceous substances, as well as their location within a complex paint stratigraphy, is one of the most challenging issues in the characterization of painting materials. Nevertheless, information on paint components represent a crucial task for studies concerning both the ancient painting techniques adopted and the state of conservation, being fundamental investigations for the selection of appropriate conservation actions. The present research was aimed at developing a new detection approach for the immunochemical localization of ovalbumin in paint cross-sections based on the use of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM). The immunochemical analyses were performed using an anti-ovalbumin primary antibody and a secondary antibody labelled with horseradish peroxidase (HRP). SECM measurements were performed in feedback mode using benzoquinone (BQ)/hydroquinone (H2Q) redox couple. In presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), HRP catalyzes the re-oxidation of H2Q to BQ and the increment of BQ concentration in correspondence of the target protein was detected by SECM through the electrochemical reduction of the regenerated BQ at the microelectrode. Indeed, the localization of ovalbumin was possible thanks to a clear discrimination of SECM currents, achieved by the comparison of the measurements recorded before and after H2O2 administration, based on the HRP on/off approach. The method was evaluated both on samples from standard mocks-up and on a historical sample, collected from a Renaissance wood painting. Rotaxane molecular shuttles were studied in which a tetralactam macrocyclic ring moves between a succinamide station and a second station in which the structure is varied. Station 2 in all cases is an aromatic imide, which is a poor hydrogen-bond acceptor in the neutral form, but a strong one when reduced with one or two electrons. When the charge density on the hydrogen-bond-accepting carbonyl groups in station 2 is reduced by changing a naphthalimide into a naphthalene diimide radical anion, the shuttling rate changes only slightly. When station 2 is a pyromellitimide radical anion, however, the shuttling rate is significantly reduced. This implies that the shuttling rate is not only determined by the initial unbinding of the ring from the first station, as previously supposed. We describe for the first time the electro-oxidative synthesis and passivating properties of surface films of poly(allylamine) and copolymers of allylamine and diallylamine. Cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectra show that the films exhibit high charge-transfer resistance and that the addition of diallylamine causes improvements in the compactness and stability toward swelling of the films when compared to both allylamine and diallyamine, leading to coatings with high charge-transfer resistance up to 70 MΩ. We also show that removing oxygen before the polymerization further improves the films' passivating properties.

Four Cu(I) complexes with general formulas [Cu(N^N)(2)][BF(4)] and [(P^P)Cu(N^N)][BF(4)] were prepared, where N^N stands for 2-(2-tert-butyl-2H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyridine and P^P is a chelating diphosphine, namely bis-(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm), bis-(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe) or bis[2-(diphenylphosphino)phenyl]ether (POP). In an acetonitrile medium, the Electro-Spray Ionization Mass Spectrometry (ESI-MS) determination provided the preliminary evidence for the occurrence of the dppm-containing complex as a mixture of a cationic mononuclear [Cu(N^N)(dppm)](+) species and a bis-cationic dinuclear [Cu(2)(N^N)(2)(dppm)(2)](2+)-type compound. Definitive evidence of peculiar structural features came from X-ray crystallography, which showed both the dppm- and, unexpectedly, the dppe-based heteroleptic compounds to crystallize as diphosphine-bridged Cu(I) dimers, unlike [Cu(N^N)(2)](+) and [(POP)Cu(N^N)](+) which are mononuclear species. In solutions of non-coordinating solvents, (31)P NMR studies at variable temperatures and dilution titrations confirmed that the dppm-based complex undergoes a monomer-dimer dynamic equilibrium, while the dppe-containing complex occurs as the bis-cationic dinuclear species, [Cu(2)(N^N)(2)(dppe)(2)](2+), within a concentration range comprised between 10(-2) and 10(-4) M. Differences among heteroleptic complexes might be related to the smaller natural bite angle displayed by dppm and dppe phosphine ligands (72° and 85°, respectively), with respect to that reported for POP (102°). The electrochemical features of the new species have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry. Despite the irreversible and complicated redox behaviour, which is typical for copper complexes, the reductions have been attributed to the tetrazole ligand whereas the oxidations are characterized as Cu(I/II) processes with a substantial contribution from the P^P-based ligands in the case of the heteroleptic species. All the four complexes are weakly or not luminescent in CH(2)Cl(2) solution, but heteroleptic complexes are bright green luminophores in a solid matrix, with quantum yields as high as 45% (dppm complex) even at room temperature. This makes them potential candidates as cheap emitting materials for electroluminescent devices.

The artificial leaf project calls for new materials enabling multielectron catalysis with minimal overpotential, high turnover frequency, and long-term stability. Is graphene a better material than carbon nanotubes to enhance water oxidation catalysis for energy applications? Here we show that functionalized graphene with a tailored distribution of polycationic, quaternized, ammonium pendants provides an sp(2) carbon nanoplatform to anchor a totally inorganic tetraruthenate catalyst, mimicking the oxygen evolving center of natural PSII. The resulting hybrid material displays oxygen evolution at overpotential as low as 300 mV at neutral pH with negligible loss of performance after 4 h testing. This multilayer electroactive asset enhances the turnover frequency by 1 order of magnitude with respect to the isolated catalyst, and provides a definite up-grade of the carbon nanotube material, with a similar surface functionalization. Our innovation is based on a noninvasive, synthetic protocol for graphene functionalization that goes beyond the ill-defined oxidation-reduction methods, allowing a definite control of the surface properties.

We describe a electrochemically driven molecular shuttle, in which shuttling takes place by means of fullerene radical-anion recognition that results in a very low operation potential (E(1/2) =-0.580 V vs. decamethylferrocene). This has been achieved by introducing positive charges on the macrocycle, which strengthen the existing π-π interactions between the macrocycle and the electrogenerated fullerene radical anion by means of an electrostatic component. In addition, the synthesis of such a molecular shuttle has been accomplished by developing a new synthetic approach that exploits the controlled translocation of the macrocycle as a selective protecting group., (Copyright © 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Marine toxins appear to be increasing in many areas of the world. An emerging problem in the Mediterranean Sea is represented by palytoxin (PlTX), one of the most potent marine toxins, frequently detected in seafood. Due to the high potential for human toxicity of PlTX, there is a strong and urgent need for sensitive methods toward its detection and quantification. We have developed an ultrasensitive electrochemiluminescence-based sensor for the detection of PlTX, taking advantage of the specificity provided by anti-PlTX antibodies, the good conductive properties of carbon nanotubes, and the excellent sensitivity achieved by a luminescence-based transducer. The sensor was able to produce a concentration-dependent light signal, allowing PlTX quantification in mussels, with a limit of quantification (LOQ = 2.2 μg/kg of mussel meat) more than 2 orders of magnitude more sensitive than that of the commonly used detection techniques, such as LC-MS/MS.

Mitochondrial respiration generates reactive oxygen species that are involved in physiological and pathological processes. The majority of methods, with exception of electron paramagnetic resonance, used to evaluate the identity, the rate and the conditions of the reactive oxygen species produced by mitochondria, are mainly based on oxidation sensitive markers. Following latest electrochemical methodology, we implemented a novel electrochemical assay for the investigation of aerobic metabolism in preparations of isolated mitochondria through simultaneous measurement of O₂ consumption and reactive species production. This electrochemical assay reveals active H₂O₂ production by respiring mouse liver mitochondria, and shows that ATP synthase activation and moderate depolarization increase the rate of H₂O₂ formation, suggesting that ATP synthesizing (state 3) mitochondria might contribute to oxidative stress or signaling., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier B.V. We analyze natural background levels (NBLs) and threshold values (TVs) of spatially distributed chemical species (NH(4), B and As) which may be a potential pressure and concern in three large scale alluvial and fluvio-deltaic aquifers at different depths of the Apennines and Po river plains in Emilia-Romagna, Northern Italy. Our results are based on statistical methodologies designed to separate the natural and anthropogenic contributions in monitored concentrations by modeling the empirical distribution of the detected concentration with a mixture of probability density functions. Available chemical observations are taken over a 20 years period and are associated with different depths and cover planar investigation scales of the order of hundreds of kilometers. High concentration values detected for NH(4) and B appear to be related to high natural background levels. Due to interaction with the host rock in different geochemical environments we observed that concentration vary in time and space (including in depth) consistently with the hydrogeochemical features and the occurrence of natural attenuation mechanisms in the analyzed reservoirs. Conversely, estimated As NBLs are not consistent with the conceptual model of the hydrogeochemical behavior of the systems analyzed and experimental evidences of As content in aquifer cores. This is due to the inability of these techniques to incorporate the complex dynamics of the processes associated with the specific hydrogeochemical setting. Statistical analyses performed upon aggregating the concentration data according to different time observation windows allow identifying temporal dynamics of NBLs and TVs of target compounds within the observation time frame. Our results highlight the benefit of a dynamic monitoring process and analysis of well demarcated groundwater bodies to update the associated NBLs as a function of the temporal dependence of natural processes occurring in the subsurface. Colour emission of core-shell silica-PEG nanoparticles in water is tuned with an electrochemically induced energy transfer approach. The lack of solubility problems, side electrochemical reactions involving donors and acceptors within the nanoparticle, and the possibility of using many classes of dyes in ECL applications confirm the validity of this strategy.

Aiming to explore the mechanisms modulating cell-carbon nanotube interactions, we investigated whether Ca(2+) ion balancing between intra- and extracellular environments could be affected by multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). We analyzed the effects induced by two different kinds of MWCNTs (as prepared and annealed at 2400°C) on the intracellular Ca(2+) ion levels in rat electrically sensitive cells and on the intercellular junction integrity of rat adenocarcinoma colon cells and platelet aggregation ability, which depend on the Ca(2+) concentration in the medium. MWCNTs, purified by annealing and more electroconductive as compared to nonannealed MWCNTs, affected Ca(2+) ion balancing between extra- and intracellular environments and induced changes on Ca(2+) ion-dependent cellular junctions and platelet aggregation, behaving as the calcium chelator ethylene glycol tetraacetic acid. This could be due to the sorption of cationic Ca(2+) ions on CNTs surface because of the excess of negatively charged electrons on the aromatic units formed on MWCNTs after annealing. Quantum-dot Cellular Automata (QCA) exploit quantum confinement, tunneling and electrostatic interaction for transistorless digital computing. Implementation at the molecular scale requires carefully tailored units which must obey several structural and functional constraints, ranging from the capability to confine charge efficiently on different 'quantum-dot centers'-in order to sharply encode the Boolean states-up to the possibility of having their state blanked out upon application of an external signal. In addition, the molecular units must preserve their geometry in the solid state, to interact electrostatically in a controlled way. Here, we present a novel class of organometallic molecules, 6-3,6-bis(1-ethylferrocen)-9H-carbazol-9-yl-6-hexan-1-thiols, which are engineered to satisfy all such crucial requirements at once, as confirmed by electrochemistry and scanning tunneling microscopy measurements, and first principles density functional calculations., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2012)

We present a resonance Raman study of electrochemical charge transfer doping on polyelectrolyte single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) in solution. Changes in the intensity of the radial breathing modes of well-identified SWNTs are measured as a function of the electrochemical potential. The intensity is maximum when the nanotubes are neutral. Unexpectedly, the Raman signal decreases as soon as charges are transferred to the nanotubes, leading to intensity profiles that are triangular for metallic and trapezoidal for semiconducting nanotubes. A key result is that the width in energy of the plateaus for the semiconducting nanotubes is roughly equal to the optical gap (rather than the free carrier gap). While these experiments can be used to estimate the energy levels of individual nanotubes, strong dynamical screening appears to dominate in individual SWNT polyelectrolytes so that only screened energy levels are being probed.

The dissociation process of neutral open-shell [4-F-(C(6)H(4))-I-C≡C-(CH(2))(4)-Cl] and [4-NO(2)-(C(6)H(4))-I-C≡C-(CH(2))(4)-Cl] asymmetric iodonium radicals was studied theoretically. Vertical electron affinities and DRC (dynamic reaction coordinate) results were obtained and compared with experimental evidence. In particular, the fluorine and nitro substituent groups were selected because of (i) their opposite electron-withdrawing/electron-donating effects and (ii) experimental evidence that the grafting ability, in terms of alkynyl/aryl grafting ratio, increases with decreasing electron-withdrawing nature of the para-position substituent on the phenyl ring. DRC results show that the dissociation dynamics of the iodine-alkynyl carbon bond, for the nitro-substituted iodonium, occurs on a longer time scale than that of the fluorine-substituted iodonium. This finding is in agreement with the overall experimental results.

Cationic cyclometalated iridium complexes containing two anionic phenylpyridine (ppy) ligands and the neutral bidentate triazole-pyridine ligand, 2-(1-substituted-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyridine (pytl), were investigated. The complexes display a rich and reversible electrochemical behavior, upon investigations by cyclic voltammetry in strictly aprotic conditions, that couples with excellent emission quantum yields and long lifetimes of the excited states. Therefore, in organic media, all complexes have generated intense green electrochemiluminescence (ECL) through the so-called annihilation procedure and, importantly, a modulation of the emission energy (to blue) has been easily obtained by simple fluorination of the ppy ligand. Finally, taking advantage of their remarkable solubility in water, intense ECL was also obtained from aqueous buffer solutions using the co-reactant method, thus making all the investigated complexes highly promising for their effective use as ECL labels in bioanalytical applications., (Copyright © 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Purpose: Major cardiovascular complications associated with noncardiac surgery represent a substantial population health problem for which there are no established efficacious and safe prophylactic interventions. Acetyl-salicylic acid (ASA) represents a promising intervention. The objective of this study was to determine surgeons' perioperative usage of ASA, and if they would enroll their patients in a perioperative ASA randomized controlled trial (RCT)., Methods: Cross-sectional survey of all practicing Canadian general, orthopedic, and vascular surgeons. Our mailed, self-administered survey asked surgeons to consider only their patients who were at risk of a major perioperative cardiovascular complication., Results: The response rate was 906/1854 (49%). For patients taking ASA chronically, there was marked variability regarding ASA continuation prior to surgery amongst the general and orthopedic surgeons, whereas 76% of vascular surgeons continued ASA in 81-100% of their patients. For patients not taking ASA chronically, approaches to starting ASA prior to surgery were variable amongst the vascular surgeons, whereas 70% of general and 82% of orthopaedic surgeons did not start ASA. For patients taking ASA chronically, 73% of general surgeons, 70% of orthopaedic surgeons, and 36% of vascular surgeons would allow at least 40% of their patients to participate in a perioperative RCT comparing stopping versus continuing ASA. For patients not taking ASA chronically, most general (76%), orthopaedic (67%), and vascular (51%) surgeons would allow at least 40% of their patients to participate in a perioperative RCT comparing starting ASA versus placebo., Conclusion: This national survey demonstrates that perioperative ASA usage as reported by surgeons is variable, identifying the need for, and community interest in, a large perioperative ASA trial.

Water is the renewable, bulk chemical that nature uses to enable carbohydrate production from carbon dioxide. The dream goal of energy research is to transpose this incredibly efficient process and make an artificial device whereby the catalytic splitting of water is finalized to give a continuous production of oxygen and hydrogen. Success in this task would guarantee the generation of hydrogen as a carbon-free fuel to satisfy our energy demands at no environmental cost. Here we show that very efficient and stable nanostructured, oxygen-evolving anodes are obtained by the assembly of an oxygen-evolving polyoxometalate cluster (a totally inorganic ruthenium catalyst) with a conducting bed of multiwalled carbon nanotubes. Our bioinspired electrode addresses the one major challenge of artificial photosynthesis, namely efficient water oxidation, which brings us closer to being able to power the planet with carbon-free fuels.

The charge-transfer and spectral properties of two octithiophenes, namely 4',4''',3'(v),3(v)'-tetra(octylsulfanyl)-2,2':5',2'':5'',2''':5''',2'(v):5'(v),2(v):5(v),2(v)':5(v)',2(v)''-octithiophene and 4,3'',4(v),4(v)''-tetrabromo-4',4''',3'(v),3(v)'-tetra[(R)-2-methylbutylsulfanyl]-2,2':5',2'':5'',2''':5''',2'(v):5'(v),2(v):5(v),2(v)':5(v)',2(v)''-octithiophene, OT1 and OT2, respectively, are characterized by cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry under ultradry conditions. The analysis of the voltammetric results shows the formation of up to the dication for both OT1 and OT2 and up to the tetraanion (OT1) and trianion (OT2) anions. The optical properties of the OT1 (2+, 1+, neutral, 1-, 2-) species were probed by in situ UV-vis-NIR spectroelectrochemistry. The calculated standard potentials at the B3LYP/cc-pVTZ level of the theory allowed the rationalization of the experimental electrochemical results. The UV-vis-NIR spectra were successfully compared with the theoretical electronic transitions and oscillator strength data obtained by time-dependent B3LYP/6-31G* calculations. Theoretical redox potentials and optical transitions properties are calculated including "the solvent effect" within the CPCM model. The consistency obtained between experimental and theoretical results indicates the existence of the hypothesized high-spin/high-charge p- and n-doped electronic states for the OT1 and OT2 octithiophenes here studied.

A family of new functional bis-cyclometalated thiophene-based cationic iridium complexes have been prepared and fully characterized. The introduction of formyl groups into the thienyl-based cyclometalating ligand (thpy-CHO) allows one to perform further functionalizability and to confer to the whole species potentially interesting perspectives as functional materials. The X-ray crystal structures of three complexes, namely, [Ir(thpy)(2)bpy]PF(6), [Ir(thpy-CHO)(2)bpy]PF(6), and [Ir(thpy-CHO)(2)phen]PF(6), are reported. A rich reduction voltammetric pattern of the complexes is outlined, and the effect of the substituents on the cyclic voltammetric behavior is fully elucidated. Finally, the electrochemiluminescence spectra of all of the species have been obtained in acetonitrile by annihilation of the one-electron-oxidized and -reduced forms, showing very similar features with respect to the luminescence (as both the shape and energy of the emission bands).

We report for the first time the stable electrochemiluminescence of a completely insoluble neutral Ir(III) complex in aqueous media. The strategy adopted is the encapsulation of emitting dye into silica-PEG nanoparticles. This nanoassembly by limiting water and oxygen quenching and allowing solubilization makes the electrogeneration of the excited state feasible under typical bioassay conditions.

Novel 5,15-bis(9-anthracenyl)porphyrin derivatives (, ) were synthesized by stepwise Suzuki-type coupling reactions using anthracenyl-boronates bearing various electronically active moieties. Absorption spectra of these porphyrin conjugates reveal some degree of delocalisation with the directly linked chromophores, particularly in the case of anthracenyl-porphyrin bearing dimethylanilino moieties at the two extremities. Fluorescence and 77 K phosphorescence properties indicate that the excitation energy is invariably funnelled to the lowest singlet and triplet states of the porphyrin chromophore. The latter levels have been probed also by transient absorption spectroscopy, showing the typical triplet features detected in meso-substituted porphyrins. Extensive electrochemical studies have been performed to unravel the electronic properties of the newly synthesized porphyrins. Low-temperature cyclic voltammetry investigations showed that the anthracenyl-porphyrins are capable of undergoing as many as four electron transfer processes. In particular, by means of UV-Vis-NIR spectroelectrochemical measurements, a NIR-centred intramolecular photoinduced intervalence charge transfer (IV-CT) from a neutral N,N-dimethylanilino moiety to the N,N-dimethylanilino radical cation has been observed for the doubly-oxidised porphyrin (2+). The molecules also showed unexpected electrogenerated chemiluminescence properties, which revealed to be largely controlled by the electronic characteristics of the peripheral anthracenyl substituents. The structural and the electronic properties of these complexes have been also characterised by DFT calculations, as well as by X-ray crystallographic analyses.

The voltammetric generation of corannulene anions was investigated over a large range of experimental conditions comprising either "traditional" electrochemical solvents, such as dimethylformamide, acetonitrile, and tetrahydrofuran, or "unconventional" solvents, such as liquid ammonia, liquid methylamine, or liquid dimethylamine, and several different supporting electrolytes. Strong ion pairing effects were found to dominate the electrochemical generation of corannulene higher anions, and through the suitable choice of the solvent/electrolyte system, we observed, for the first time, the reversible electrochemical generation of up to the triply reduced corannulene. The standard potentials obtained experimentally compared rather well with the theoretical values calculated by ab initio and density functional methods, in which solvation and ion pairing effect were explicitly taken into account. In particular, the calculations considered the effect of the electrolyte cation size on ion pairing in order to rationalize the occurrence of the third reduction within the experimental potential window.

The electrochemiluminescence (ECL) of doped silica nanoparticles (DSNPs), prepared by a reverse microemulsion method that leads to covalent incorporation of the Ru(bpy)(3)(2+), was investigated in acetonitrile and aqueous buffers. The emission was produced for the first time by cation-anion direct annihilation, and the position of ECL maxima indirectly allowed estimation of the E(1/2,IOx) and E(1/2,IRed) potentials for Ru(bpy)(3) inside DSNPs. The weak ECL emission is most likely generated by an intrananoparticle ruthenium unit annihilation rather than by the electron transfer between a reduced and oxidized DSNP due to the very low diffusivities of the nanoparticles. Thiol-terminated DSNPs were self-assembled on gold substrates, forming compact and stable monolayers which mimic probe-target assays with DSNPs as labels. The ECL intensity obtained by such functionalized substrates in aqueous media, using tripropylamine (TPrA) as coreactant, was surprisingly increased with respect to direct electrochemical oxidation because of the ability of oxidized TPrA to diffuse within the DSNPs structure and reach a higher number of emitting units with respect to direct electron tunneling. The experimental results have been explained by proposing a basic physical-chemical model which supports evaluation of the number of redox-active centers per nanoparticle. In the model the contrasting effects of increased luminescence quantum yield and decreased diffusion coefficient with respect to free (i.e., not bound within the silica structure) emitting molecules were taken into account. This allows, in principle, optimizing the ECL emission intensity as a function of DSNP size, doping material, charge, doping level, supporting electrolyte, electrode material, and solvent. Finally, it is worth noting that this study has provided a more than 1000-fold increase of the ECL signal of a chemically and electrochemically stable DSNP compared to that of a single dye, suggesting that use of this kind of nanostructures as luminescent labels represents a very promising system for ultrasensitive bioanalysis.

We report on the synthesis and physical chemical characterization of a class of heteroleptic mononuclear cyclometalated bis(phenylpyridine)iridium(III) complexes with tetrazolate chelate ligands, such as the deprotonated form of 2-(1 H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyridine ( PyTzH), 2-(1 H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyrazine ( PzTzH), and 5-bromo-2-(1 H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyridine ( BrPyTzH). The electrochemical and photophysical investigations of the resulting iridium(III) complexes revealed a rather wide span of redox and emission properties as a consequence of the nature of the ancillary tetrazolate ligand. In particular, within a series of the three neutral species, the emission observed changes from the blue-green of the pyridyltetrazolate complex to the red of that containing the pyrazinyltetrazolate ligand. The bromo-containing species, despite it displaying poor photophysical performances, is a synthetically attractive building block for the construction of polymetallic architectures. Moreover, the investigation of the reactivity toward electrophiles of one of the neutral mononuclear complexes, by methylation of the coordinated tetrazolate ligand, has also allowed further tuning of the electronic properties. In the latter case, the emission color tuning is also associated with a simple method for the conversion of a neutral species, a potentially triplet emitter for organic light-emitting devices, into the corresponding methylated cation, which might be used as a dopant for light-emitting electrochemical cell type devices or as a marker for biological labeling.

Since their very first days, electron transfer has always played a special role in carbon nanotubes' life. In view of their structural and electronic uniqueness, carbon nanotubes have been proposed either as bulk electrode materials for sensing and biosensing in advanced electrochemical devices, or as molecular-sized electrodes for very fast electrode kinetics investigations. Alternatively, electron transfer has been used to probe the electronic properties of carbon nanotubes by either direct voltammetric inspection or coupling with spectroscopic techniques, ultimately allowing, in the case of true solutions of individual uncut single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), to single-out their redox potentials as a function of diameter. For their redox properties, as emerged from these studies, SWNTs represent unique building blocks for the construction of photofunctional nanosystems to be used in efficient light energy conversion devices.

In this work, the electrochemical and ECL properties of tris[1,10-phenanthrolinediyl-4,7-di(benzenesulfonate)]Ru(II) ([Ru(BPS)3]4-) have been addressed in both strictly aprotic conditions and aqueous buffers. A combined theoretical and experimental approach is presented to focus thermodynamics and kinetic effects of electro-generated species possessing highly negative charge. The complex, prepared as the sodium salt by using a newly developed procedure, was subsequently converted to the tetrabutylammonium salt by ion exchange, thus making it soluble in organic media and allowing, for the first time, its thorough electrochemical investigation in ultra-dry aprotic media. The electrochemically induced luminescence (ECL) of Na 4[Ru(BPS)3] in phosphate buffer, using the co-reactant method (tripropylamine), was investigated as a function of the electrode material and halide addition, and ECL intensities six times higher than that of [Ru(bpy)3]2+ were found. In addition, the ECL behavior of this promising dye for biomolecule recognition was investigated in aprotic media and, for the first time, the direct radical anion-radical cation annihilation ECL was obtained.

Bandgap fluorescence spectroscopy of aqueous, micelle-like suspensions of SWNTs has given access to the electronic energies of individual semiconducting SWNTs, while substantially lower is the success achieved in the determination of the redox properties of SWNTs as individual entities. Here we report an extensive voltammetric and vis-NIR spectroelectrochemical investigation of true solutions of unfunctionalized SWNTs and determine the standard electrochemical potentials of reduction and oxidation as a function of the tube diameter of a large number of semiconducting SWNTs. We also establish the Fermi energy and the exciton binding energy for individual tubes in solution. The linear correlation found between the potentials and the optical transition energies is quantified in two simple equations that allow one to calculate the redox potentials of SWNTs that are insufficiently abundant or absent in the samples.

The formidable electron-acceptor properties of C60 contrast with its difficult oxidations. Only recently it has become possible to achieve reversibility of more than one electrochemical anodic process versus the six reversible cathodic reductions. Here we exploit the reactivity of electrochemical oxidations of pure C60 to grow a film of high thermal and mechanical stability on the anode. The new material differs remarkably from its precursor since it conducts both electrons and holes. Its growth and properties are consistently characterized by a host of techniques that include atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman and infrared spectroscopies, X-ray-photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDX), matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI), and a variety of electrochemical measurements.

Although the desirability of developing synthetic molecular machine systems that can function on surfaces is widely recognized, to date the only well-characterized examples of electrochemically switchable rotaxane-based molecular shuttles which can do so are based on the tetracationic viologen macrocycle pioneered by Stoddart. Here, we report on a [2]rotaxane which features succinamide and naphthalene diimide hydrogen-bonding stations for a benzylic amide macrocycle that can shuttle and switch its net position both in solution and in a monolayer. Three oxidation states of the naphthalene diimide unit can be accessed electrochemically in solution, each one with a different binding affinity for the macrocycle and, hence, corresponding to a different distribution of the rings between the two stations in the molecular shuttle. Cyclic voltammetry experiments show the switching to be both reversible and cyclable and allow quantification of the translational isomer ratios (thermodynamics) and shuttling dynamics (kinetics) for their interconversion in each state. Overall, the binding affinity of the naphthalene diimide station can be changed by 6 orders of magnitude over the three states. Unlike previous electrochemically active amide-based molecular shuttles, the reduction potential of the naphthalene diimide unit is sufficiently positive (-0.68 V) for the process to be compatible with operation in self-assembled monolayers on gold. Incorporating pyridine units into the macrocycle allowed attachment of the shuttles to an acid-terminated self-assembled monolayer of alkane thiols on gold. The molecular shuttle monolayers were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and their electrochemical behavior probed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and double-potential step chronoamperometry, which demonstrated that the redox-switched shuttling was maintained in this environment, occurring on the millisecond time scale.

In this contribution, we report the synthesis, the chemical and photophysical characterization, and the study of the reactivity toward electrophiles of two mononuclear complexes of the type [Ru(bpy)2L]+ (bpy is 2,2'-bipyridyl), in which L is represented by the deprotonated form of 2-(1,H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyridine (L1) or 2-(1,H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyrazine (L2). The 1H and 13C NMR experiments that were performed on complexes RuL1 and RuL2 allowed us to establish that the tetrazolate moiety is bonded to the metal center via the N-1 nitrogen, while the coplanar arrangement adopted by the coordinated ligand upon coordination and the consequent interannular conjugation effect accounts for the unexpectedly low field resonance of the tetrazole carbon. The 13C NMR spectroscopy is also of fundamental importance to determine the chemo- and regioselectivity of the addition of a methyl group to RuL1 and RuL2, which takes place at the N-3 nitrogen of the five-membered ring. All these features were confirmed by the X-ray diffraction structures of RuL1 and of the methylated compounds RuL1Me and RuL2Me. Relative to these latter complexes, the presence of a methyl moiety does not cause any distortion from coplanarity of the coordinated tetrazolates. The redox properties of the complexes were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and indicated a quite different behavior between the pyrazinyl-tetrazolate and the pyridyl-tetrazolate complexes as the consequence of the higher electron-withdrawing character of the pyrazine ring. The study of the photophysical properties of the complexes also shows a significant diversity between the luminescent RuL1 and the rather poorly emissive RuL2. Interestingly, the methylated compounds RuL1Me and RuL2Me display radiative excited-state decays with longer lifetimes than their precursors; this feature indicates that methylation is a useful reaction for the tuning of the light emission performances of similar tetrazolate complexes. The synthesis and the characterization of a novel dinuclear complex of type [(bpy)2Ru-L3-Ru(bpy)2]2+, Ru(L3)Ru, where L3 is the bis-anion derived from bis-2,3-(1,H-tetrazol-5-yl)pyrazine, is also reported.

Herein we describe a fullerene rotaxane, in which shuttling between two well-defined and distant co-conformations is both induced and monitored by the C60 stopper.

Single-wall carbon nanohorns (SWNHs) are a new class of material that is closely related to single-wall carbon nanotubes. Here, we describe the synthesis and characterization of a series of SWNHs functionalized with ethylene glycol chains and porphyrins. Functionalization of carbon nanohorns has been achieved using two different synthetic protocols: (1) direct attack of a free amino group on the nanohorn sidewalls (nucleophilic addition) and (2) amidation reaction of the carboxylic functions in oxidized nanohorns. The nanohorn derivatives have been characterized by a combination of several techniques, and the electronic properties of the porphyrin/nanohorn assemblies (SWNH/H2P) have been investigated by electrochemistry, spectroelectrochemistry, and a series of steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy. The cyclic voltammetry curve of nanohorn/porphyrin conjugate 6 showed a continuum of faradic and pseudocapacitive behavior, which is associated with multiple-electron transfers to and from the SWNHs. Superimposed on such a pseudocapacitive current, the curve also displays three discrete reduction peaks at -2.26, -2.57, and -2.84 V and an oxidation peak at 1.12 V (all attributed to the porphyrin moiety). Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence demonstrated a quenching of the fluorescence of the porphyrin in SWNH/H2P conjugates 5 and 6 compared to the reference free base porphyrin. Transient absorption spectra permitted the electron-transfer process between the porphyrins and the carbon nanostructures to be highlighted.
