Active fluctuations are known to play a significant role in the intracellular transport of passive objects. However, the effect of viscoelasticity of the environment in shaping such processes is relatively less understood. Here, with a minimal experiment using a driven colloid in a viscoelastic bath, we show that viscoelasticity significantly increases the mean injected power to the passive object ($\sim 50\%$ compared to a viscous medium), for the same strength of the external driving. Additionally, we observe a notable reduction in negative work fluctuations across a wide range of driving amplitudes. These findings collectively suggest an enhanced directionality in driven processes within a viscoelastic bath, which we attribute to the emergence of interactions between the colloid and the viscoelastic medium., Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures (Accepted for publication in New Journal of Physics)

We propose cyclic quantum refrigeration in solid-state, employing a gas of magnetic field vortices in a type-II superconductor -- also known as fluxons -- as the cooling agent. Refrigeration cycles are realized by envisioning a racetrack geometry consisting of both adiabatic and isothermal arms, etched into a type-II superconductor. The guided propagation of fluxons in the racetrack is achieved by applying an external electrical current, in a Corbino geometry, through the sample. A gradient of magnetic field is set across the racetrack allowing one to adiabatically cool down and heat up the fluxons, which subsequently exchange heat with the cold, and hot reservoirs, respectively. We characterize the steady state of refrigeration cycles thermodynamically for both $s-$wave and $d-$wave pairing symmetries, and present their figures of merit such as the cooling power delivered, and the coefficient of performance. Our cooling principle can offer significant cooling for on-chip micro-refrigeration purposes, by locally cooling below the base temperatures achievable in a conventional dilution refrigerator. We estimate $10\mathrm{nW}/\mathrm{mm}^2$ of cooling power per unit area under typical operating conditions. Genomic signal processing has been used successfully in bioinformatics to analyze biomolecular sequences and gain varied insights into DNA structure, gene organization, protein binding, sequence evolution, etc. But challenges remain in finding the appropriate spectral representation of a biomolecular sequence, especially when multiple variable-length sequences need to be handled consistently. In this study, we address this challenge in the context of the well-studied problem of classifying genomic sequences into different taxonomic units (strain, phyla, order, etc.). We propose a novel technique that employs signal processing in tandem with Gaussian mixture models to improve the spectral representation of a sequence and subsequently the taxonomic classification accuracies. The sequences are first transformed into spectra, and projected to a subspace, where sequences belonging to different taxons are better distinguishable. Our method outperforms a similar state-of-the-art method on established benchmark datasets by an absolute margin of 6.06% accuracy.

In this article, we investigate a dynamic control problem of a production-inventory system. Here, demands arrive at the production unit according to a Poisson process and are processed in an FCFS manner. The processing time of the customers' demand is the exponential distribution. The production manufacturers produce the items on a make-to-order basis to meet customer demands. The production is run until the inventory level becomes sufficiently large. We assume that an item's production time follows exponential distribution and the amount of time for the produced item to reach the retail shop is negligible. Also, we assume that no new customer joins the queue when there is a void inventory. This yields an explicit product-form solution for the steady-state probability vector of the system. The optimal policy that minimizes the discounted/average/pathwise average total cost per production is derived using a Markov decision process approach. We show that quantum nondemolition (QND) measurements can be used to realize measurement-based imaginary time evolution. In our proposed scheme, repeated weak QND measurements are used to estimate the energy of a given Hamiltonian. Based on this estimated energy, adaptive unitary operations are applied such that only the targeted energy eigenstates are fixed points of the evolution. In this way, the system is deterministically driven towards the desired state. The nonlinear nature of the QND measurement, which allows for producing interactions between systems, is explicitly derived in terms of measurement operators. We show that for suitable interaction times, single qubit QND Hamiltonians can be converted to effective multi-qubit imaginary time operations. We illustrate our techniques with the example of preparing a four qubit cluster state, which is prepared using only collective single qubit QND measurements and single qubit adaptive operations., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

We analyze a scheme that uses quantum nondemolition measurements to induce squeezing of a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well trap. In a previous paper [Ilo-Okeke et al. Phys. Rev. A \textbf{104}, 053324 (2021)], we introduced a model to solve exactly the wavefunction for all atom-light interaction times. Here, we perform approximations for the short interaction time regime, which is relevant for producing squeezing. Our approach uses a Holstein-Primakoff approximation for the atoms while we treat the light variables exactly. It allows us to show that the measurement induces correlations within the condensate, which manifest in the state of the condensate as a superposition of even parity states. In the long interaction time regime, our methods allow us to identify the mechanism for loss of correlation. We derive simple expressions for the variances of atomic spin variables conditioned on the measurement outcome. We find that the results agree with the exact solution in the short interaction time regime. Additionally, we show that the expressions are the sum of the variances of the atoms and the measurement. Beyond the short interaction time regime, our scheme agrees qualitatively with the exact solution for the spin variable that couples to light.

Here we explore the possibility of precise time-keeping in quantum systems using athermal resources. We show that quantum measurement engineered reservoirs can be used as athermal resources to drive the ticks of a quantum clock. Two and three level quantum systems act as transducers in our model, converting the quantum measurement induced noise to produce a series of ticks. The ticking rate of the clock is maximized when the measured observable maximally non-commutes with the clock's Hamiltonian. We use the large deviation principle to characterize the statistics of observed ticks within a given time-period and show that it can be sub-Poissonian -- quantified by Mandel's Q parameter -- alluding to the quantum nature of the clock. We discuss the accuracy and efficiency of the clock, and extend our framework to include hybrid quantum clocks fueled by both measurements, and thermal resources. We make comparisons to relatable recent proposals for quantum clocks, and discuss alternate device implementations harvesting the quantum measurement engineered non-equilibrium conditions, beyond the clock realization., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

We use the short-time inference scheme (Manikandan, Gupta and Krishnamurthy, Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 120603, 2020), obtained within the framework of stochastic thermodynamics, to infer a lower-bound to entropy generation rate from flickering data generated by Interference Reflection Microscopy of HeLA cells. We can clearly distinguish active cell membranes from their ATP depleted selves and even spatio-temporally resolve activity down to the scale of about one $\mu$m.
