Abstract

In this paper we report on recent results in the Þeld of the phenomenology of very low energy neutrino interactions. We brießy describe the cross section calculation for Neutrino Capture on Beta decay nuclei (NCB). We show that the resulting cross section open the possibility to detect the cosmological relic neutrinos. With this achievement, the relic neutrino detection has been downscaled from a principle problem to a technological challenge. We also summarise the state of the art about possible detection techniques.

Abstract

—Human Rhinovirus (HRV) is the most important aetiologic agent of common cold in adults and children. HRV is a single- stranded, positive sense RNA virus and, despite the high level of conservation among different serotypes, sequence alignment of viral protease 3C with mammalian protease reveals no homology. Thus, protease 3C is an optimal target for the development of anti-HRV agents. In the present work we investigated the design, the synthesis and the development of new potential reversible inhibitors against HRV protease 3C. Docking studies on the crystallized structure of HRV2 protease 3C led us to the design and the synthesis of a series of 3,5 disubstituted benzamides able to act as analogues of the substrate. We also developed 1,3,5 trisubstituted benzamides where aromatic substitutions on the aryl ring led us to investigate the importance of p–p interaction on the stabilization of protease 3C-inhibitor complex. All structures were tested for enzymatic inhibition on HRV14 protease 3C. Results highlighted the inhibitory activity of compounds 13, 14, and 20 (91%, 81%, and 85% at 10 lM, respectively), with the latter exhibiting an ID50 (dose that inhibits 50% of the viral cytopathic effect) on HRV-14 = 25 lg/ml.

Abstract

This study evaluated the presence and extent of contamination with Legionella spp. in the hot water distribution systems of three hospitals in Catania (Italy). In total, 291 hot water samples were collected between September 2002 and August 2005 and these were examined in order to monitor the hospital distribution systems and evaluate the efficacy of decontamination measures. L. pneumophila was detected at variable concentrations up to over 10000 UFC/L at several collection sites in some hospital buildings and branches of the water distribution system while other buildings/branches were found to be free of contamination. The most frequently isolated serogroup was L. pneumophila serogroup 3, occasionally associated with serogroups 4, 5 and 6. Molecular typing of Legionella strains by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis of genomic DNA restriction fragments identified four different genotypes, each recovered from a different branch of the distribution system. Decontamination procedures, including shock hyperchloration and two different thermal shock methods, performed between October 2003 and August 2005, led to only temporary reductions in contamination. In fact, previous concentrations of the same L. pneumophila serogroup were found within 3 to 8 months of decontamination. In order to prevent and monitor Legionella infections, sterilizing filters were installed in water taps of all wards with high-risk patients and urinary antigen testing was performed on all patients diagnosed with nosocomial pneumonia. No cases of Legionella pneumonia were identified in 2005.

Abstract

Bioinformatics systems benefit from the use of data mining strategies to locate interesting and pertinent relationships within massive information. For example, data mining methods can ascertain and summarize the set of genes responding to a certain level of stress in an organism. Even a cursory glance through the literature in journals, reveals the persistent role of data mining in experimental biology. Integrating data mining within the context of experimental investigations is central to bioinformatics software. In this paper we describe the framework of probabilistic principal surfaces, a latent variable model which offers a large variety of appealing visualization capabilities and which can be successfully integrated in the context of microarray analysis. A preprocessing phase consisting of a nonlinear PCA neural network which seems to be very useful to deal with noisy and time dependent nature of microarray data has been added to this framework.

Abstract

Detection of Cherenkov light emission in liquid argon has been obtained with an ICARUS prototype, during a dedicated test run at the Gran Sasso Laboratory external facility. Ionizing tracks from cosmic ray muons crossing the detector active volume have been collected in coincidence with visible light signals from a photo-multiplier (PMT) immersed in liquid argon. A 3D reconstruction of the tracks has been performed exploiting the ICARUS imaging capability. The angular distributions of the tracks triggered by the PMT signals show an evident directionality. By means of a detailed Monte Carlo simulation we show that the geometrical characteristics of the events are compatible with the hypothesis of Cherenkov light emission as the main source of the PMT signals.

Abstract

As for the recent scientific findings, carbon neutrality is no more sufficient within the research for a sustainable development, as climate change effects are becoming crucial factors to be considered. Therefore, in developing strategies and applying design technologies for sustainability in urban settlements, a focus on climate neutrality is required, to build climate resilience together with energy efficiency. This paper presents an experimental methodology applied within the ABITAlab activities for the assessment of the Urban Regeneration Integrated Plan (PIRU) for the Mediterranean city of Taranto. In this experience the Advanced Sustainable Design (ASD) was applied by addressing both energy efficiency and climate resilience for climate neutrality. The importance of the experimentation is defined by the relation upon which, since Regenerative Design principles apply to ASD, the presented assessment methodology is applied to the ASD Process, through which, by studying regenerative scenarios, the goal of production of positive environmental and social impacts overcome the concern for the reduction of negative environmental impacts. The paper is structured as follows: after research reported in the literature section, the proposed assessment methodology is built interpolating three types of validated assessment methodologies to address climate neutrality: (1 and 2) through NbS and SUDS for climate resilience; (3) through PEDs for energy efficiency. Then, the methodology is validated through its application to the presented project experience within a regenerative scenario of transformative resilience. At the end, the experimentation results validate: (a) the workflow methodology divided in three different steps; (b) the scientific contribution of the methodology based on the integration of three different assessment methods. The work presented is validated for the Advanced Sustainable Design for climate neutrality within regenerative scenario, replicable in the Mediterranean area.

Abstract

The energy--zenith angular event distribution in a neutrino telescope provides a unique tool to determine at the same time the neutrino-nucleon cross section at extreme kinematical regions, and the high energy neutrino flux. By using a simple parametrization for fluxes and cross sections, we present a sensitivity analysis for the case of a km^3 neutrino telescope. In particular, we consider the specific case of an under-water Mediterranean telescope placed at the NEMO site, although most of our results also apply to an under-ice detector such as IceCube. We determine the sensitivity to departures from standard values of the cross sections above 1 PeV which can be probed independently from an a-priori knowledge of the normalization and energy dependence of the flux. We also stress that the capability to tag downgoing neutrino showers in the PeV range against the cosmic ray induced background of penetrating muons appears to be a crucial requirement to derive meaningful constraints on the cross section., Comment: 10 pages, 28 figures
