Abstract

We present the first measurements of the survival time of ultracold neutrons (UCNs) in solid deuterium (SD2). This critical parameter provides a fundamental limitation to the effectiveness of superthermal UCN sources that utilize solid ortho-deuterium as the source material. These measurements are performed utilizing a SD2 source coupled to a spallation source of neutrons, providing a demonstration of UCN production in this geometry and permitting systematic studies of the influence of thermal up-scatter and contamination with para-deuterium on the UCN survival time.

Abstract

A steady state chemical model and computer program have been developed for a life support system and applied to trade-off studies. The model is based on human demand for food and oxygen determined from crew metabolic needs. The model includes modules for water recycle, waste treatment, CO2 removal and treatment, and food production. The computer program calculates rates of use and material balance for food. O2, the recycle of human waste and trash, H2O, N2, and food production supply. A simple non-iterative solution for the model has been developed using the steady state rate equations for the chemical reactions. The model and program have been used in system sizing and subsystem trade-off studies of a partially closed life support system.

Abstract

This article reviews the status of an experiment to study the neutron spin-electron angular correlation with the Los Alamos Ultra-Cold Neutron (UCN) source. The experiment will generate UCNs from a novel solid deuterium, spallation source, and polarize them in a solenoid magnetic field. The experiment spectrometer will consist of a neutron decay region in a solenoid magnetic field combined with several different detector possibilities. An electron beam and a magnetic spectrometer will provide a precise, absolute calibration for these detectors. An A-correlation measurement with a relative precision of 0.2% is expected by the end of 2002.

Abstract

Typically, practical optimization problems involve nonsmooth functions of hundreds or thousands of variables. As a rule, the variables in such problems are restricted to certain meaningful intervals. In this article, we propose an efficient adaptive limited memory bundle method for large-scale nonsmooth, possibly nonconvex, bound constrained optimization. The method combines the nonsmooth variable metric bundle method and the smooth limited memory variable metric method, while the constraint handling is based on the projected gradient method and the dual subspace minimization. Abstract

The objective of the study was to test two different models for group activities supporting work ability for farmers' occupational health services and to evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of these models. One hundred and twenty six female farmers were randomly assigned to two intervention groups (large group and exercise group) and the control group. Subjective work ability, musculoskeletal symptoms, and habits of physical exercise were asked using a questionnaire. Musculoskeletal capacity was assessed by repetitive and static muscle tests and mobility of the back. The static balance was measured with one leg standing, eyes closed Cardiovascularf itness was assessed with 2-km walking test. Measurements were done before and after the group activity and in one-year follow-up. The physical activity of the farmers increased, the functioning of their musculoskeletal system improved, and musculoskeletal symptoms diminished more often in the intervention groups than in the control groups.
