Objectives: Outfitting police officers with body-worn cameras (BWCs) has been suggested to improve police-community relations. This study evaluates whether the deployment of BWCs on NYPD officers impacted resident perceptions of the police. Methods: A cluster randomized controlled trial design was used to test the influence of BWCs on resident perceptions of the NYPD in treatment precincts relative to control precincts. Dual-frame randomly selected telephone surveys were used to collect pre-intervention and post-intervention resident perception data. Results: We find no statistically significant differences between BWC treatment and control precincts in general perceptions of the NYPD or the average assessment of police officer behavior among those who have had recent encounters with the NYPD. Conclusion: Strong community support for BWC adoption and citizen expectations for videos of controversial policing events suggests the continued use of this technology. However, BWCs should be implemented with other evidence-based programs to enhance police-community relations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Aims Perianal fistulizing disease is a common complication of Crohn's disease [CD], for which new therapies are urgently needed. To assist the design of clinical trials for novel therapeutics, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials [RCTs] to quantify placebo rates and identify factors influencing them in perianal CD [pCD]. Methods We searched MEDLINE, Embase and CENTRAL from inception to June 2021. Eligible studies were placebo-controlled trials of pharmacological interventions for pCD. Placebo fistula response and remission rates for induction and maintenance trials were extracted and pooled using a random-effects model. Mixed-effects meta-regression was used to evaluate the impact of patient and study-level characteristics on point estimates. Results In 17 RCTs [13 induction, five maintenance] the pooled placebo fistula response and remission rate for induction trials was 25% (95% confidence interval [CI] 17–36%) and 17% [95% CI 11–25%], respectively. For maintenance trials, the pooled placebo fistula response and remission rate was 23% [95% CI 17–32%] and 19% [95% CI 14–25%], respectively. Trials enrolling patients with less disease activity and a higher proportion with ileal predominant disease were associated with significantly higher placebo response rates. Trials originating in Europe [compared to North America], therapies requiring perianal injection and a longer timepoint to measure remission were associated with higher placebo remission rates. Conclusions Placebo response and remission rates in pCD trials are influenced by patient and disease-related factors, as well as the type of intervention being studied. Understanding the progression of violent and nonviolent criminal activity remains a matter of theoretical debate. In the present study, the authors build on criminological theory and assess the extent to which the progression of violent and nonviolent criminal behaviors follows different trajectories. The authors rely on semiparametric mixture models to examine these comorbidities of offending in a longitudinal sample of delinquent adolescents. The results suggest that the trajectories of violent and nonviolent criminal offending follow similar paths over time and that membership in the chronic violent and nonviolent offender groups are associated with overlapping sets of risk factors. However, the results also indicate that at the individual level, membership in a particular nonviolent offending group does not share high concordance with membership in a particular violent offender group. These findings raise questions about the adequacy of general theories of crime progression and suggest the need to continue investigating behavioral theories that discriminate between different forms of offending. This study reports results from an evaluation of the experimental Rio Hondo driving under the influence (DUI) court of Los Angeles County, California. Interviews and official record checks with 284 research participants who were randomly assigned to a DUI court or a traditional criminal court were assessed at baseline and at 24-month follow-up. The interviews assessed the impact of the DUI court on self-reported drunk driving behavior, the completion of treatment, time spent in jail, alcohol use, and stressful life events. Official record checks assessed the impact of the DUI court on subsequent arrests for driving under the influence and other drinking-related behaviors. Few differences on any outcomes were observed between participants in the experimental DUI court and those assigned to the traditional court. The results suggest that the DUI court model had little additional therapeutic or public safety benefit over the traditional court process. The implication of these findings for the popularity of specialized courts for treating social problems is discussed. (Contains 4 tables and 6 endnotes.)

A limited amount of research has examined the relationship between characteristics of police organizations and policing styles. In particular, few studies have examined the link between organizational structures and police officer arrest decisions. Wilson's (1968) pioneering case study of police organizations suggested that individual police behavior is a function of departmental goals that occur within the broader political climate of a community. Wilson suggested that agencies could be classified into three typologies: the watchman style, the legalistic style, and the service style. The present study examines the influence of organizational characteristics associated with these styles on individual officers' arrest rates using nationally representative data from large police agencies. Findings suggest that police officer arrest decisions are partially explained by variations in police organizational structures. The implications of these findings for contemporary organizational explanations of police behavior are discussed. (Contains 4 tables and 1 note.)

This study builds on existing criminological theories and examines the role of life satisfaction and self-control in explaining youth violence. Using data from a stratified cluster sample of 5,414 public high school students who responded to the South Carolina Youth Risk Behavior Survey, the study examines the relationship between adolescents' perceptions of life satisfaction, behavioral risky acts, and self-reported acts of violence. Analyses indicate that higher levels of life satisfaction are associated with lower violence. Participation in work and involvement in health-related risk-taking behaviors pertaining to sex, drugs, and alcohol are also associated with increased violence. The implications of these findings for criminological theory and for school-based violence prevention programs are discussed.

Research indicates that gender is one of the strongest correlates of juvenile delinquency. Additionally, a growing body of literature suggests that the association with delinquent peers is an important predictor of delinquent behavior. Although a few studies have examined how delinquent peers condition the gender-delinquency relationship, the authors extend this body of literature by using longitudinal data from a sample of adolescents to explore the extent to which internal and external constraints condition the relationship between gender, delinquent peers, and delinquent behavior. Findings indicate that delinquent peer association is an important predictor of delinquency generally, but the effect varies across gender. Specifically, delinquent peer associations are a better predictor of delinquency among boys compared to girls. In addition, the effect of delinquent peers on delinquency varies according to the level of internal and external constraints. Future research directions for unraveling the role of gender in youthful offending are discussed.

Research Summary: This study examines the extent to which citywide racial and ethnic disparities in arrests are driven by a subset of places within cities. Data are drawn from six U.S. cities from 2014 to 2019. Results indicate that arrests are strongly concentrated within a few block groups, for all race and ethnicities in all cities. Coupled with higher rates of arrests for Blacks and (in some cities) Hispanics compared to Whites and other racial groups, this means that a few places in every city are responsible for driving citywide racial and ethnic disparities in arrests. These arrest hot spots demonstrate very high year‐to‐year stability. There is a strong relationship between crime and arrest hot spots, making crime hot spots key drivers of citywide racial and ethnic disparities in arrests. Policy Implications: Our results indicate that changes to arrest patterns in most parts of a city will have little impact on citywide racial and ethnic disparities in arrests. At the same time, an intense focus on reducing arrests in hot spots may yield outsized reductions in population‐level racial and ethnic disparities, while being especially feasible due to their limited scope. Place‐based and group‐based interventions at these locations may entail the dual benefit of reduced racial disparities in arrests along with enhanced public safety. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Aims Treatment options for proctitis are limited. To assist trial design for novel therapeutics, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of proctitis randomized controlled trials [RCTs] to quantify placebo rates and identify factors influencing them. Methods We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE and CENTRAL from inception to June 2021. Placebo-controlled trials of pharmacological interventions for proctitis were eligible. Placebo clinical response and remission rates for induction and maintenance trials were extracted and pooled using a random-effects model. Mixed-effects meta-regression was used to evaluate the impact of patient and study-level characteristics. Results Twenty RCTs [17 induction and four maintenance phases] were included. The most common intervention was aminosalicylates and most studies investigated topical medications. The pooled placebo clinical response and remission rates for induction trials were 28% (95% confidence interval [CI] 22–35%; n  = 17) and 20% [95% CI 12–32%; n  = 9], respectively. Pooled placebo endoscopic response and remission rates were 32% [95% CI 26–39%, n  = 12] and 18% [95% CI 9–33%, n  = 6], respectively. For maintenance trials, the pooled placebo clinical remission rate was 29% [95% CI 16–46%, n  = 17]. Trials published after 2005 and trials with a longer duration of follow-up were associated with significantly lower placebo response rates. Nineteen of 20 studies were assessed as having an unclear risk of bias, reflecting the historical nature of trials. Conclusions Placebo response and remission rates in proctitis trials are influenced by trial phase and the endpoint being assessed. These contemporary rates will inform trial design for novel therapeutics for treatment of proctitis, which is a large unmet need. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Parents and professionals can both play a role in improving children's expressive language development and a number of alternative models of delivery exist that involve different levels of input by these two groups. However, these alternative treatments have not been subject to rigorous comparative analysis in terms of both cost and clinical effectiveness. Aims: To compare, from the viewpoint of the healthcare provider, parent-based intervention (PBI) for preschool children presenting with expressive language delay with current practice observed in an actual healthcare setting where parents of the child follow a professional's advice on a review basis. Methods & Procedures: Two groups of children were compared on a variety of expressive and receptive language assessment measures. One group (n=10) received standard individual general care. The comparison group (n=12) received PBI. Outcomes & Results: After the 6-month study, the results indicated that children who received PBI made significantly greater language gains that children who received current practice. In addition, a cost-effective analysis was conducted. This showed that although the language gains delivered by PBI did incur some additional costs for the healthcare provider, there was no significant increase in cost per outcome gain over general care. Conclusions: Options in the implementation of PBI are discussed that could potentially save costs for the healthcare providers and increase the value of a PBI-based approach.
