Abstract

The neutron capture cross section of the unstable nucleus $^{186}$Re is studied by investigating the inverse photodisintegration reaction $^{187}$Re($\gamma$,n). The special interest of the {\it s}-process branching point $^{186}$Re is related to the question of possible {\it s}-process contributions to the abundance of the {\it r}-process chronometer nucleus ^{187}$Re. We use the photoactivation technique to measure photodisintegration rates. Our experimental results are in good agreement with two different statistical model calculations. Although the cross sections predicted by both models for the inverse reaction $^{186}$Re(n,$\gamma$) is too low to remove the overproduction of $^{186}$Os; the two predicted neutron-capture cross sections differ by a factor of 2.4; this calls for future theoretical study., Comment: Phys. Abstract

The 100 % polarized photon beam at the High Intensity gamma-ray Source (HIgS) at Duke University has been used to determine the parity of six dipole excitations between 2.9 and 3.6 MeV in the deformed nuclei 172,174 Yb in photon scattering (g,g') experiments. The measured parities are compared with previous assignments based on the K quantum number that had been assigned in Nuclear Resonance Fluorescence (NRF) experiments by using the Alaga rules. A systematic survey of the relation between gamma-decay branching ratios and parity quantum numbers is given for the rare earth nuclei., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev. C

209. Dust in 3CR radio galaxies: On the FR1-FR2 difference

Abstract

We compare three 3CR samples of 11 FR1 galaxies, 17 FR2 galaxies and 18 lobe-dominated quasars contained in the ISO Data Archive. In contrast to the powerful FR2 galaxies with edge-brightened lobes, the low radio power FR1 galaxies in our sample do not exhibit any high MIR or FIR dust luminosity, which is typical for a buried, intrinsically more luminous AGN. This consolidates the fact already inferred from optical studies that their AGNs have only a relatively low luminosity. Also the FR1 galaxies show a high FIR/MIR luminosity ratio, compared to quasars, suggesting that their FIR luminosity is substantially powered by the interstellar radiation field (ISRF) of the giant elliptical hosts. Finally, we discuss the FR1-FR2 morphological dichotomy. FR1 galaxies do not have more interstellar matter (ISM) than FR2s as traced -- on the large scale -- by the cool FIR emitting dust and -- in the nuclear region -- by the warm MIR emitting dust. Abstract

We present a semiclassical calculation of the generalized form factor which characterizes the fluctuations of matrix elements of the quantum operators in the eigenbasis of the Hamiltonian of a chaotic system. Our approach is based on some recently developed techniques for the spectral form factor of systems with hyperbolic and ergodic underlying classical dynamics and f=2 degrees of freedom, that allow us to go beyond the diagonal approximation. First we extend these techniques to systems with f>2. Then we use these results to calculate the generalized form factor. We show that the dependence on the rescaled time in units of the Heisenberg time is universal for both the spectral and the generalized form factor. Furthermore, we derive a relation between the generalized form factor and the classical time-correlation function of the Weyl symbols of the quantum operators., Comment: some typos corrected and few minor changes made; final version in PRE

Abstract

We present the complete set of ISOPHOT observations of 3CR radio galaxies and quasars, which are contained in the ISO Data Archive, providing 75 mid- and far-infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs) between 5 and 200 micron. For 28 sources they are supplemented with MAMBO 1.2 mm observations and for 15 sources with new submillimetre data from the SCUBA archive. We check the orientation-dependent unified scheme, in which the powerful FR2 narrow line galaxies are quasars viewed at high inclination, so that their nuclei are hidden behind a dust torus intercepting the optical-ultraviolet AGN radiation and reemitting it in the infrared. We find that (1) both the quasars and the galaxies show a high mid- to far-infrared luminosity ratio typical for powerful AGNs and (2) -- when matched in 178 MHz luminosity -- both show the same ratio of isotropic far-infrared to isotropic 178 MHz lobe power. Therefore, from our large sample investigated here we find strong evidence for the orientation-dependent unification of the powerful FR2 galaxies with the quasars., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables, accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics

Infrared to millimetre spectral energy distributions have been obtained for 41 bright ultra-luminous infrared galaxies. The observations were carried out with ISOPHOT between 10 and 200 micron and supplemented for 16 sources with SCUBA at 450 and 850 micron and with SEST at 1.3 mm. In addition, seven sources were observed at 1.2 and 2.2 $\mu$m with the 2.2 m telescope on Calar Alto. 216. Dust emission from 3C radio galaxies and quasars: New ISO observations favour the unified scheme

Abstract

In order to test the unified scheme for luminous radio galaxies and quasars we observed 10 galaxy/quasar pairs from the 3CR catalogue with ISOPHOT at infrared wavelengths between 5 and 180 micron. Each pair was selected such that both the 178 MHz luminosity and the redshift match as close as possible between the radio galaxy and the quasar in order to minimize effects of cosmic evolution. 13 of the 20 sources were detected in at least one waveband. 12 sources show clear evidence of a thermal bump at FIR wavelength, while in the remaining 7 sources the upper limits are still compatible with the presence of luminous dust emission. In agreement with the predictions of the unified scheme, the quasars and galaxies in our sample cannot be distinguished by their observed mid- and far-infrared properties. This is in contrast to the IRAS results which indicated that radio galaxies radiate significantly less mid- to far-infrared emission than quasars. However, the IRAS samples are dominated by low-redshift sources (z < 0.5), while our sample contains several of the most luminous radio galaxies at redshift z ~ 1. The latter have already been suspected to contain a hidden quasar for other reasons, e.g. an extended emission line region aligned with the radio axis. From the ratio between FIR luminosity emitted by dust and the radio power at 178 MHz, we conclude that the radio galaxy/quasar unification might be perfectly valid for the most luminous 3C sources at high redshift (z > 0.8). At lower redshifts (z < 0.5), however, some of the FRII radio galaxies contain active nuclei which emit less UV-optical continuum than the quasars of similar radio power. Their preferences were assessed using a discrete choice experiment design, which was developed based on a literature review and two patient focus group discussions. The final discrete choice experiment design consisted of four attributes, namely “therapy application regimen,” “time without progression of disease,” “possibility of grade ≥3 adverse events (AEs) affecting the blood,” and “possibility of grade ≥3 AE heart failure.”Results: Analysis was based on 84 patients (36.9% females, mean age 62.7 years, mean multiple myeloma disease duration 5.5 years). Among the tested attributes, “therapy application regimen” was assigned the highest importance for treatment decisions (38.8%), the second important attribute was “time without progression of disease” (38.7%), followed by “possibility of AE heart failure” (13.9%) and “possibility of AEs affecting the blood” (8.6%). Patients preferred oral intake once a day and once a week over other application modes such as oral intake once a day and once a week plus twice-weekly infusions. Furthermore, they preferred longer disease progression-free time and lower risk of grade ≥3 AEs. The highest overall utility was derived for ixazomib + lenalidomide + dexamethasone (utility: 3.218), compared with lenalidomide + dexamethasone (2.769), and carfilzomib + lenalidomide + dexamethasone (1.928).Conclusion: RRMM patients prefer treatments with an all-oral application, a longer disease-progression-free time, and a lower probability of AEs. If patients face tradeoffs, they accept a lower progression-free time and/or higher AE rates to get an all-oral therapy. 229. Voxel-based T2 relaxation rate measurements in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) with and without mesial temporal sclerosis

Abstract

Introduction: Quantitative measurements of T-2 relaxation in the hippocampus for focus lateralization in mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE) are well established. Less is known to what degree such relaxation abnormalities also affect regions beyond the ipsilateral hippocampus. Therefore, the aim of this study was to characterize extent and distribution pattern of extrahippocampal relaxation abnormalities in TLE with (TLE-MTS) and without MRI evidence of mesial-temporal sclerosis (TLE-no). Methods: Double spin echo images (TE1/2: 20/80 ms) acquired in 24 TLE-MTS and 18 TLE-no were used to calculate relaxation rate maps. These maps were analyzed by SPM2 and by selecting regions of interest (ROI) in the hippocampus and several extrahippocampal brain regions. Results: In TLE-MTS, the results of the SPM and ROI analysis were in good agreement and showed the most severe relaxation rate decreases in the ipsilateral hippocampus but also in other ipsilateral temporal regions, orbitofrontal, and parietal regions and to a lesser degree in contralateral frontal regions. The relaxation rate decreases in TLE-no were confined to small regions in the ipsilateral anterior inferior and medial temporal lobe in the SPM analysis while ROI analysis showed additional regions in the ipsilateral hippocampus, amygdala, and anterior cingulate. Conclusion: TLE-MTS showed extensive, widespread but predominantly ipsilateral temporal and also extratemporal T-2 relaxation rate decreases. In contrast, the findings of the SPM and ROI analyses in TLE-no suggested that if relaxation rate decreases are present, they are less uniform and generally milder than in TLE-MTS. This further supports the hypothesis that TLE-no is a distinct clinicopathological entity from TLE-MTS and probably heterogeneous in itself.

Abstract

Lesional neocortical epilepsy (NE) can be associated with hippocampal sclerosis or hippocampal spectroscopic abnormalities without atrophy (dual pathology). In this study, magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) was used to determine the frequency of hippocampal damage/dysfunction in NE with and without structural lesion. Sixteen patients with NE [seven temporal NE (NE-T), nine extratemporal (NEET)] and 16 controls were studied with a 2D MRSI sequence (Repetition time/echo time (TR/TE) = 1800/135 ms) covering both hippocampi. Seven NE patients had MR visible lesions (NE-Les), nine had normal MRI (NE-no). In each hippocampus, 12 voxels were uniformly selected. In controls, mean (SD) NAA/(Cr + Cho) values for each voxel were calculated and voxels with NAA/(Cr + Cho)

Abstract

Alcohol-related disorders are widespread and often underdiagnosed. They are associated with substantial costs, not only for the individual drinking alcohol but to the society as a whole. Questionnaires and biomarkers are useful to facilitate screening, diagnosis, and treatment of alcohol-related disorders and thus prevent later complications. The analytical spectrum offers a wide portfolio of direct and indirect alcohol markers which can be investigated. Indirect state markers such as gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), carbohydrate deficiency transferrin (CDT), and the mean corpuscular volume (MCV) are influenced by age and sex, various substances, and non-alcohol-related diseases. Furthermore, they do not cover the entire timeline for alcohol consumption. Direct state markers such as ethyl glucuronide (EtG), phosphatidylethanol (PEth), and fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEE) have gained enormous interest in the last decades as they embed the consumed ethanol within their chemical structure. As biomarkers with high sensitivity and specificity covering different windows of detection, they are recommended in guidelines, should be routinely applied, and contribute to new perspectives in the prevention, interdisciplinary cooperation, diagnosis, and treatment of alcohol-related disorders.
