Abstract

Context.Using state-of-art near-infrared (NIR) instrumentation the near-infrared light scattered from interstellar clouds can be mapped over large areas. Measurement of the surface brightness provides information on the line-of-sight dust column density. Scattered light therefore provides an important tool to study the mass distribution of quiescent, interstellar clouds at high, even sub-arcsecond resolution.

Abstract

Three prominent cold objects of the Taurus Molecular Ring(TMR) were revealed by our ISOPHOT 200 μm map of the south-eastern part of the Heiles Cloud 2(HCL 2) cloud complex. One corresponds to the cyanopolyyne peak region of the TMC-1ridge, (TMC-1 CP), one is the HCL2-Ecloud, and one which we call HCL2-ESlies south of TMC-1. The 200/100 μm colour temperatures and column densities of the three ISOPHOT cold clouds are ≈12 K, and 1.2 ±0.7 $\times$1022cm-2respectively, as calculated from ISO/IRAS surface brightnesses. As Nagoya-4 m C$^{\rm 18}$O (1–0) spectra show, these are dense molecular clouds with $N({\rm H})> 10^{21}$cm-2column density peaks. The ISOPHOT 200 μm surface brightness is well correlated with the C$^{\rm 18}$O line intensity ($corr.~coef.\approx 70$%). The large dust particle emissivity is found to be increased in the prototypical very dense core TMC-1 CP. As the low linewidths ($\Delta v=0.8$±0.2 km s-1) indicate, the level of turbulent energy density is 50% lower in these three clouds than in other clouds of HCL2. Dense cores were identified inside the C$^{\rm 18}$O clouds by NH3measurements with the Effelsberg-100 m telescope and Nobeyama-45 m H13CO+data. The density of the dense cores is $n\ge 1.1$$\times$105cm-3, and their kinetic temperatures are $\la$10 K, in good agreement with the FIR results. The total molecular gas mass in the gravitationally bound cloud cores of TMC-1 CPand HCL2-Eis about 21 $M_{\odot}$and 8 $M_{\odot}$respectively. The cores, TMC-1 CPb and HCL2-Eab are associated with 3 low mass YSO candidate 2MASS point sources, while 35 other low mass YSO candidates are seen elsewhere in TMR south, which we consider as evidence for ongoing low mass star formation.

Abstract

Odin has successfully observed three regions in the Orion?A cloud, i.e. Ori?KL, Ori?S and the Orion Bar, in the 572.5?GHz rotational ground state line of ammonia, ortho-NH3$(J,K) = (1,0) \rightarrow (0,0)$, and the result for the Orion Bar represents the first detection in an ammonia line. Several velocity components are present in the data. Specifically, the observed line profile from the Orion Bar can be decomposed into two components, which are in agreement with observations in high-JCO lines by Wilson et al. (2001). Using the source model for the Orion Bar by these authors, our Odin observation implies a total ammonia abundance of ${\rm NH}_3/{\rm H}_2 = 5\times 10^{-9}$.

Abstract

Odin has successfully observed the molecular core ρ Oph A in the 572.5 GHz rotational ground state line of ammonia, NH3($J_K = 1_0 \rightarrow 0_0$). The interpretation of this result makes use of complementary molecular line data obtained from the ground (C17O and CH3OH) as part of the Odin preparatory work. Comparison of these observations with theoretical model calculations of line excitation and transfer yields a quite ordinary abundance of methanol, X($\rm CH_3OH)= 3 \times 10^{-9}$. Unless NH3is not entirely segregated from C17O and CH3OH, ammonia is found to be significantly underabundant with respect to typical dense core values, viz. X($\rm NH_3) = 8 \times 10^{-10}$.

Abstract

Unlike conventional CFD methods, the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) describes the dynamic behaviour of physical systems in a mesoscopic scale, based on discrete forms of kinetic equations. In addition to the classical collision-propagation scheme in which the physical and velocity spaces are coupled, finite-differences, finite volumes and finite-element schemes have been used for numerically solving the discrete kinetic equations. A major breakthrough in LB theory was the direct derivation of the LB equation from continuous kinetic equations, establishing a systematic link between the kinetic theory and the lattice Boltzmann method and determining the necessary conditions for the discretization of the velocity space. The lattices obtained by this method proved to be stable in flows over a wide range of parameters, by the use of high-order lattice Boltzmann schemes, leading to velocity sets which, when used in a discrete velocity kinetic scheme, ensures accurate recovery of the high-order hydrodynamic moments. This review presents the theoretical background of these kinetic methods. In particular, we focus on high-order discrete forms of the Boltzmann equation suitable for non-ideal fluids and on the lattice-Boltzmann collision-propagation method.

242. Feasibility of Day Surgery in Patients With Breast Conservation and Sentinel Node Biopsy: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract

Background and Aims: The aim of this study was to analyze feasibility of day surgery in breast cancer patients with breast conserving surgery and sentinel node biopsy.Material and Methods: The study was a randomized controlled trial comparing day surgery with one night hospital stay in breast cancer patients with breast conserving surgery and sentinel node biopsy. A total of 40 patients with ?3-cm tumor and clinically N0 were randomized to one night stay group and 38 patients to day surgery group. Within discharge, patients and their relatives were given questionnaires in order to evaluate their experience regarding the duration of hospital stay.Results: Randomized groups were similar regarding patient age and tumor stage. A total of 18 (47%) day surgery group patients were discharged the same day. The most common reason for overnight hospital stay was axillary clearance, 9 (24%). None of the patients in the day surgery group, but 2 patients in the overnight hospital stay group had re-operation due to complications. Perception and preference results were analyzed both according to randomization and actual treatment groups. Patients in both groups had rather similar experiences on the first postoperative day. Also, spouse’s or relative’s perception after discharge was similar in both groups.Conclusion: Day surgery was well received by the patients and their relatives. Day surgery appears as feasible in patients with breast conservation and sentinel node biopsy.

Abstract

Purpose: A growing proportion of inguinal hernia patients are at least 65 years old. Assessing operational benefits versus risks in this group of elderly patients merits research. Methods: Patients in two prospective trials (1: n = 134, 89 elderly; 2: n = 398, 70 elderly) completed RAND-36 questionnaires preoperatively (response rate 100 and 98.5 %, respectively) and at 3 (98.5 %) or 12 months (89.6 %) after open inguinal hernia repair. In both groups, preoperative and postoperative quality of life data were statistically compared within age categories. Quality of life change was compared between age categories. Immediate complications were recorded. Results: The dimensions physical functioning and pain improved significantly in the elderly and under 65-year-olds. Role functioning/physical and social functioning showed improvement as well, but less constantly. No statistical difference in complication rates was found across age groups. Conclusion: Inguinal hernia surgery improves physical and social dimensions of quality of life among elderly and under 65-year-olds similarly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
