This report explores the 24-hour dietary recall (24HDR) form used for the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP). Dietary supplement use, amount of money spent on food, time being physically active, portion size consumed, foods reported by meals, and preparation of the meal were common components collected among 61 EFNEP programs. Components not included were instructions for the peer educator, use of food models/measuring cups, examples of foods/beverages, time food/beverages were consumed, color coding, and a prompt to review what was written. A standardized 24-hour dietary recall form with training protocols is recommended to uphold the integrity of data collection., (Published by Elsevier Inc.)

Direct neuronal reprogramming is a promising approach to replace neurons lost due to disease via the conversion of endogenous glia reacting to brain injury into neurons. However, it is essential to demonstrate that the newly generated neurons originate from glial cells and/or show that they are not pre-existing endogenous neurons. Here, we use controls for both requirements while comparing two viral vector systems (Mo-MLVs and AAVs) for the expression of the same neurogenic factor, the phosphorylation-resistant form of Neurogenin2. Our results show that Mo-MLVs targeting proliferating glial cells after traumatic brain injury reliably convert astrocytes into neurons, as assessed by genetic fate mapping of astrocytes. Conversely, expressing the same neurogenic factor in a flexed AAV system results in artefactual labelling of endogenous neurons fatemapped by birthdating in development that are negative for the genetic fate mapping marker induced in astrocytes. These results are further corroborated by chronic live in vivo imaging. Taken together, the phosphorylation-resistant form of Neurogenin2 is more efficient in reprogramming reactive glia into neurons than its wildtype counterpart in vivo using retroviral vectors (Mo-MLVs) targeting proliferating glia. Conversely, AAV-mediated expression generates artefacts and is not sufficient to achieve fate conversion.

Nutrition education and food resource management (FRM) can assist food-insecure individuals in acquiring healthy and affordable food. We aimed to assess the relationships between FRM skills and healthy eating focus with diet quality and health-related behaviors in low-income adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-sectional study was conducted using an online survey of 276 low-income adults living in a low-food-access community in Northeast Connecticut. Through analysis of covariance, adults who usually or always had a meal plan, considered reading nutrition labels important, made a grocery list, were concerned about their food healthiness, and rated their diet quality as very good/excellent reported higher diet quality (frequency-based and liking-based scores) ( p < 0.05 for all). Individuals who considered reading food labels very important and reported having a good diet reported less frequent pandemic-related unhealthy behaviors (consumption of candy and snack chips, soda or sugary drinks, weight gain, smoking) ( p < 0.001). Furthermore, higher-frequency-based diet quality was associated with lower risk of overweight or obesity (OR: 0.37; 95% CI: 0.18, 0.76; p -trend < 0.01). Thus, FRM skills and healthy eating focus were associated with higher diet quality and healthier self-reported changes in diet, weight, and smoking behaviors during the pandemic.

Background: We aimed to evaluate the impact of two different phytotherapeutic agents on decision making regarding prostate biopsy for patients with higher-than-normal prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels., Methods: From June 2022 to May 2023, all patients attending two urological institutions due to higher-than-normal PSA levels were randomized to receive either oral capsules of Curcuma Longa, Boswellia, Pinus pinaster and Urtica dioica (Group A) or Serenoa Repens 320 mg (Group B) for 3 months. At the follow-up visit after 3 months, all patients underwent PSA tests and multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI)., Results: In the per-protocol analysis, data from 66 patients in Group A and 76 in Group B were analyzed. Fifty patients in Group A (75.7%) showed a significant reduction in total PSA compared to forty-nine in Group B (64.4%) ( p < 0.001). Twenty-eight patients had PI-RADS III or higher in mpMRI: twelve in Group A and fourteen in Group B. Twenty-three patients (34.8%) in Group A and fifty-nine (77.6%) in Group B ( p < 0.001) underwent prostate biopsy based on the mpMRI findings and PSA values. Three patients in Group A showed a significant reduction in total PSA values while having positive mpMRI findings (6%) compared with nine in Group B (19.5%) ( p < 0.001). On the contrary, 7 patients in Group A did not show significant reduction in total PSA values and had negative mpMRI findings (43%) compared to 22 in Group B (81.4%) ( p < 0.001)., Conclusions: In conclusion, a three-month course of a combination of Curcuma Longa, Boswellia, Pinus pinaster and Urtica dioica seems to be an interesting tool to avoid unnecessary prostate biopsies among men with higher-than-normal PSA levels.

Background: Peyronie's disease (PD) represents a challenging urological disease, due to not optimal post-operative surgical outcomes. We aim to retrospectively evaluate if vacuum erection device (VED) treatment before penile curvature surgery is able to improve post-operative surgical outcomes., Methods: All enrolled patients were assigned to the following groups: (a) the treatment group: VED treatment (three times per week) starting 3 months before surgery and (three times per week) one month after surgery; and (b) the control group: VED treatment (three times per week) one month after surgery. Follow-up urologic visits were scheduled for 3 and 6 months after surgery, and the two groups were compared., Results: A total of 38 patients were enrolled (median age 67 years, 57-74, IQR): 20 in the treatment group and 18 in the control group. At the follow-up visits, the two groups were different in terms of IIEF-5 (26 vs. 24; p = 0.02), "yes" to SEP2 and 3 (85% vs. 55%; p < 0.001, 85% vs. 50%; p < 0.001, respectively), and PDQ (-16 vs. -11; p = 0.03). Complete correction of penile curvature was achieved in 36 patients (94.7%). In the treatment group, no hourglass deformity was reported, whereas one patient reported a mild hourglass deformity in the control group. In the treatment group, we obtained a longer total penile length (median +1.5 cm). The overall satisfaction rate was 98% in the treatment group and 96% in the control group., Conclusions: The VED treatment before penile curvature surgery in patients affected by PD was able to improve surgical outcomes.

The purpose of this study was to determine how the 24-hour dietary recall (24HDR) is administered and how the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) peer educators and other staff are trained on the data collection and entry process, from the EFNEP coordinators' perspectives. This cross-sectional, quantitative study utilized an online survey to collect information from EFNEP coordinators representing 61 of 76 EFNEP programs. While 56% of the programs collected the 24HDR data starting with the first thing eaten the previous day, 49% of them started collecting data at the time of class, going backwards. Most programs, i.e., 72%, reported using a multiple-pass method; however, only one-third of them reported using the standard five-pass method. Almost all programs, i.e., 97%, reported one peer educator collecting data from a group of 2-12 clients. All programs reported collecting the 24HDR data in a group setting, with about one-third of the programs also collecting data one-on-one. Most programs, i.e., 57%, reported spending ≤4 h on the initial training of staff in how to collect 24HDR data, and 54% of them reported that the peer educators entered the data themselves. This study found that the methods used to collect answers, train the staff, and enter the 24HDR data varied across EFNEP programs and that there is a need to standardize or revise the collection of 24HDR data.

The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) is a federally funded program that teaches nutrition education to adults and youth with low-income. EFNEP is funded throughout the United States including federal territories. The purpose of EFNEP is to provide nutrition education. Evaluation for adult programs includes pre/post surveys and pre/post 24-h diet recalls (24HDR). A validated standard of dietary measures, 24HDR are useful when collected as designed: one-on-one by a trained professional. In EFNEP, 24HDR are collected in group settings by EFNEP peer educators who often have not received a college degree or any formal education in nutrition. The purpose of this study was to explore attitudes and behaviors of EFNEP peer educators regarding how they collect diet recalls in a group setting, their perceptions of how adult participants feel about the recalls, and the benefits and challenges of using recalls. Online interviews were conducted with EFNEP peer educators across the U.S. Peer educators recognized the importance of collecting the recall data but identified several challenges such as time, resources, and participant reluctance to complete the recall. Program evaluation through methods like the 24HDR is important to measure outcomes and inform program improvements but also needs to include how evaluation can benefit participants and minimize data collection burden. Future research needs to examine the validity of collecting recalls in a group setting compared to other measures of diet quality.

Objective: To evaluate intra-observer diagnostic reproducibility using traditional slides (TS) versus whole slide images (WSI)., Methods: TS and WSI of 1427 prostatic biopsies (107 consecutive patients) were evaluated by a single pathologist. Agreement between readings was evaluated with Gwet's Agreement coefficient (AC) and Landis and Koch benchmark scale., Results: The positive/negative agreement between the readings was almost perfect (AC 1 = 0.962; 95% CI[0.949,0.974]), with method independent distribution of discrepancies. Among positive biopsies, 212 had identical Gleason score (GS) on TS and WSI and discordant GS in 69 cases (AC 2  = 0.932; 95% CI[0.907, 0.956]). Concordant negative and positive patient classification was observed in 39 and 64 cases, respectively; two cases were assigned to the positive group on TS and 2 on WSI configuring an almost perfect agreement (AC 1 =0.929; 95% C1[0.860, 0.998]). ISUP Grade group (ISUP GG) agreement was evaluated in the 60 concordantly positive cases: in 45 cases it was identical on TS and WSI; in 10 biopsies the discrepancy implied a modification of the assigned ISUP GG of ≤ 1 class and in 5 the discrepancy implied a modification of 2 classes. Gwet's agreement coefficient was (95% CI [0.834, 0.962]), i.e.: almost perfect agreement., Conclusions: Our data show almost perfect agreement between digital and traditional diagnostic activity in a routine setting, confirming that digital pathology can be safely introduced into routine workflows., (Copyright © 2023 Società Italiana di Anatomia Patologica e Citopatologia Diagnostica, Divisione Italiana della International Academy of Pathology.)

Mt Etna in Sicily hosts a bryophyte floristic richness of 306 taxa, corresponding to 259 mosses, 43 liverworts, and 4 hornworts. Species richness shows a hump-shaped relationship with the elevation, with a peak at 1200-1700 m a.s.l. Chorotype patterns clearly change along an altitudinal gradient, from the Mediterranean, located at 0-300 m a.s.l., to Arctic-montane and boreo-Arctic montane at 1800-2700 m a.s.l., showing a correlation with the bioclimatic belts identified for the Mt Etna. In regard to the life form pattern, the turf species are the most represented in each elevation gradient, except at 2300-2700 m a.s.l. where the tuft species are prevalent. The life strategy pattern shows the colonists as the prevailing species, featured by an increasing trend up to 2200 m of elevation; above this limit, they are exceeded by the perennial stayers. Furthermore, taking into consideration the red-listed species (at the European and/or Italian level), as well as the species of phytogeographical interest, it was possible to identify the high bryophyte conservation priority areas; these areas are located in thermo-Mediterranean and oro-Mediterranean bioclimatic belts, the latter corresponding to the oldest substrates of the volcano where some of the most interesting bryophyte glacial relicts find refuge.
