Bismutite (Bi2O2CO3) possessing diverse morphologies, namely nanosheets, nanodiscs and nanoplatelets, was synthesized by a simple controllable method using bismuth nitrate pentahydrate and urea as precursors in a water/ethylene glycol mixture. The as-synthesized samples showed unique physical and chemical properties, such as varying morphology, phase identification, chemical composition, surface area and surface potential. Bi2O2CO3 nanosheets exhibited excellent adsorption capabilities for anionic dyes (acid orange 7 and methyl orange) and high photocatalytic performance for the decolorization of cationic dyes (rhodamine B and methylene blue) under simulated solar illumination. Furthermore, the electrochemical performance of Bi2O2CO3 nanosheets showed good capacitance properties and hence could be a potential candidate for electrode materials in energy related applications.

Acoustic cavitation in a liquid medium generates several physical and chemical effects. The oscillation and collapse of cavitation bubbles, driven at low ultrasonic frequencies (e.g., 20 kHz), can generate strong shear forces, microjets, microstreaming and shockwaves. Such strong physical forces have been used in cleaning and flux improvement of ultrafiltration processes. These physical effects have also been shown to deactivate pathogens. The efficiency of deactivation of pathogens is not only dependent on ultrasonic experimental parameters, but also on the properties of the pathogens themselves. Bacteria with thick shell wall are found to be resistant to ultrasonic deactivation process. Some evidence does suggest that the chemical effects (radicals) of acoustic cavitation are also effective in deactivating pathogens. Another aspect of cleaning, namely, purification of water contaminated with organic and inorganic pollutants, has also been discussed in detail. Strong oxidising agents produced within acoustic cavitation bubbles could be used to degrade organic pollutants and convert toxic inorganic pollutants to less harmful substances. The initial growth of acoustic cavitation activity is important in some applications such as therapeutic and diagnostic medicine. The initial growth of cavitation activity has been investigated using sonoluminescence and sonochemical activity (sonochemiluminescence) at 358 kHz, 647 kHz and 1062 kHz and at 5 W, 15 W and 30 W applied power levels. The growth of sonochemically active bubble population is found to be much faster than that of sonoluminescence bubble population at 358 kHz and 647 kHz whereas almost similar growth rate is observed at 1062 kHz for both bubble populations. This suggests that the cavitation bubble resonance size ranges of sonoluminescence and sonochemically active bubbles are different at 358 kHz and 647 kHz, whereas they have similar size range at 1062 kHz. At 358 kHz and 647 kHz, relatively smaller bubbles become chemically active. Possible reasons for such observations have been discussed. This letter reports on the use of frequency sweeps to probe acoustic cavitation activity generated by high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). Unprecedented enhancement and quenching of HIFU cavitation activity were observed when short frequency sweep gaps were applied in negative and positive directions, respectively. It was revealed that irrespective of the frequency gap, it is the direction and frequency sweep rate that govern the cavitation activity. These effects are related to the response of bubbles generated by the starting frequency to the direction of the frequency sweep, and the influence of the sweep rate on growth and coalescence of bubbles, which in turn affects the active bubble population. A facile one-step sonochemical synthesis of Cu2O nanocubes has been developed by ultrasound irradiation of copper sulfate in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone and ascorbic acid at pH 11. During sonication, the reaction between acoustic cavitation-generated radicals and CuSO4 produced Cu(OH)2 intermediate which then reacted with ascorbic acid to generate Cu2O nanocubes. The products were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, HRTEM, AFM and particle size analyzer. Extending the absorption to the visible region by tuning the optical band-gap of semiconductors and preventing charge carrier recombination are important parameters to achieve a higher efficiency in the field of photocatalysis. The inclusion of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) support in photocatalysts is one of the key strategies to address the above-mentioned issues. In this study, rGO supported AgI-mesoTiO2 photocatalysts were synthesized using a sonochemical approach. The physical effects of ultrasound not only improved the crystallinity of AgI-mesoTiO2 but also increased the surface area and loading of the AgI-mesoTiO2 nanocomposite on rGO sheets. The low intense oxygen functionalities (C-O-C and COOH groups) peak observed in the high resolution C1s spectrum of a hybrid AgI-mesoTiO2-rGO photocatalyst clearly confirmed the successful reduction of graphene oxide (GO) to rGO. The interfacial charge transfer between the rGO and the p-n junction of heterostructured photocatalysts has decreased the band-gap of the photocatalyst from 2.80 to 2.65 eV. Importantly, the integration of rGO into AgI-mesoTiO2 composites serves as a carrier separation centre and provides further insight into the electron transfer pathways of heterostructured nanocomposites. The individual effects of photo-generated electrons and holes over rGO on the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of rhodamine (RhB) and methyl orange (MO) using AgI-mesoTiO2-rGO photocatalysts were also studied. Our experimental results revealed that photo-generated superoxide (O2(-)˙) radicals are the main reactive species for the degradation of MO, whereas photo-generated holes (h(+)) are responsible for the degradation of RhB. As a result, 60% enhancement in MO degradation was observed in the presence of rGO in comparison to that of the pure AgI-mesoTiO2 photocatalyst. This is due to the good electron acceptor and the ultrafast electron transfer properties of rGO that can effectively reduce the molecular oxygen to produce a large amount of reactive O2(-)˙ radicals. However, in the case of RhB degradation, h(+) is the main reactive species which showed a slightly increased photocatalytic activity (12%) in the presence of rGO support where the role of rGO is almost negligible. This study suggests the effective roles of rGO for the degradation of organics, i.e., the rate of photocatalytic degradation also depends on the nature of compound rather than rGO support.

Sonochemical reduction of copper nitrate, using 20 kHz ultrasound in aqueous solutions in the presence of urea, led to the formation of layered copper hydroxy nitrate nanosheets, as evidenced by scanning and transmission electron microscopy images. Fourier-transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses were used to characterize layered Cu2(OH)3NO3 nanosheets. A technique based on pulsed ultrasound and sonoluminescence emission was used to measure the size and size distribution of bubbles generated by 355 kHz power ultrasound under continuous Ar or He flow in aqueous NaCl solutions. It was observed that the bubble size strongly decreased with increasing NaCl concentration and that this decrease was much stronger than in solutions presaturated with Ar or He. This size decrease is attributed to the combination of the salting-out effect of the salt and the introduction of bubble nuclei by the continuous gas flow. Besides, the comparison of Ar and He bubbles underlines the effect of the gas diffusion coefficient on the bubble size reached.

Improving the quality and nutritional aspects of food is one of the key issues for healthy life of human beings. The stability during storage is an important parameter in quality assurance of food products. Various processing techniques such as high pressure, thermal, pulsed electric field and microwave have been used to prolong the shelf-life of food products. In recent years, ultrasound technology has been found to be a potential food processing technique. The passage of ultrasound in a liquid matrix generates mechanical agitation and other physical effects due to acoustic cavitation. Owing to its importance, a number of review articles and book chapters on the applications of ultrasound in food processing have been published in recent years. This article provides an overview of recent developments in ultrasonic processing of food and dairy systems with a particular focus on functionality of food and dairy ingredients. More specifically, the use of high frequency ultrasound in fat separation from milk and viscosity modification in starch systems and the use of low frequency ultrasound in generating nutritional food emulsions, viscosity modification and encapsulation of nutrients have been highlighted. Diffused sunlight is found to be an effective light source for the efficient degradation and mineralization of organic pollutant (methyl orange as a probe) by sono-photocatalytic degradation using reduced graphene oxide (rGO) supported CuO-TiO2 photocatalyst. The prepared catalysts are characterized by XRD, XPS, UV-vis DRS, PL, photoelectrochemical, SEM-EDS and TEM. A 10 fold synergy is achieved for the first time by combining sonochemical and photocatalytic degradation under diffused sunlight. rGO loading augments the activity of bare CuO-TiO2 more than two fold. The ability of rGO in storing, transferring, and shuttling electrons at the heterojunction between TiO2 and CuO facilitates the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, as evidenced by the photoluminescence results. The complete mineralization of MO and the by-products within a short span of time is confirmed by TOC analysis. Further, hydroxyl radical mediated degradation under diffused sunlight is confirmed by LC-MS. This system shows similar activity for the degradation of methylene blue and 4-chlorophenol indicating the versatility of the catalyst for the degradation of various pollutants. An oil-in-water emulsion was ultrasonically prepared in aqueous chitosan solutions containing different counterions. Tetradecane was used as the oil phase in order to mimic nonpolar substances used in food processes. Various acids were used to dissolve chitosan, and we found that conjugate bases of the acids used, which act as counterions to neutralize the positive charges of ammonium ions present in the chitosan backbone, played a significant role in controlling the size, size distribution, and stability of chitosan-encapsulated tedradecane emulsion droplets (microspheres). The counterion effect is also found to be strongly dependent upon tetradecane (TD)/chitosan (CS) ratio and ultrasonic power. Key observations are: (i) for a given TD/CS ratio, the size and size distribution decrease when the acid is varied from nitric acid to benzenesulfonic acid at high TD/CS ratio, and the effect becomes less significant at low TD/CS ratio; (ii) for a given acid, the size and size distribution increase with an increase in TD/CS ratio; and (iii) at low TD/CS ratio the size and size distribution are significantly influenced by the viscosity of the system. A possible mechanism for the observed counterion effect is proposed. The role of counterions, solution viscosity, and ultrasonic power in controlling the physical and functional properties of ultrasonically generated chitosan-stabilized tetradecane microspheres is discussed in detail. The key new finding of this study is that it is possible to form stable emulsions without the addition of external emulsifiers and stabilizers, but only using chitosan with different acids to dissolve chitosan. This strategy could be used in the generation of stable food emulsions.

Zn(0.96-x)Cu0.04Mn(x)O (0⩽x⩽0.04) nanoparticles were synthesized by sol-gel method. The X-ray diffraction pattern indicated that doping of Mn and Cu did not change the ZnO hexagonal wurtzite structure. The Mn doped nanoparticles had smaller average crystallite size than un-doped Zn0.96Cu0.04O nanoparticles due to the distortion in the host ZnO lattice. This distortion prevented the subsequent growth and hence the size reduced by Mn doping. The changes in lattice parameters, average crystallite size, peak position and peak intensity confirmed the Mn substitution in Zn-Cu-O lattice. The Mn and Cu co-doping increased the charge carrier density in ZnO nanoparticles which led to increase the dielectric constant. The dielectric constant also varied by depend the size of the nanoparticles. The change in morphology by Mn-doping was studied by transmission electron microscope. The optical absorption and band gap were changed with respect to both compositional and size effects. The band gap was initially increased from 3.65 to 3.73 eV at 1% of Mn doping, while decreasing trend in band gap was noticed for further increase of Mn. The band gap was decreased from 3.73 to 3.48 eV when Mn concentration was increased from 2% to 4%. Presence of chemical bonding and purity of the nanoparticles were confirmed by FTIR spectra. A comprehensive investigation on the effect of ultrasonic frequency and power on the structural transformation of CTABr/NaSal micelles has been carried out. Sonication of this micelle system at various ultrasonic frequencies and power resulted in the formation and separation of two types of micelles. High viscoelastic threadlike micelles of ∼ 2 nm in diameter and several μm in length and tubular micelles possessing a viscosity slightly above that of water with ∼ 30-50 nm diameter and few hundred nm length. The structural transformation of micelles was induced by the shear forces generated during acoustic cavitation. At a fixed acoustic power of 40 W, the structural transformation was found to decrease from 211 to 647 kHz frequency due to the decreasing shear forces generated, as evidenced by rheological measurements and cryo-TEM images. At 355 kHz, an increase in the structural transformation was observed with an increase in acoustic power. Bubbles in an acoustic field are affected by forces such as primary and secondary Bjerknes forces, which have been shown to be influenced by acoustic pressure, frequency, bubble size and separation distance between bubbles. However, such studies are predominantly theoretical, and are mostly focused on the sign reversal of the secondary Bjerknes force. This study provides experimental data on the effect of a range of bubble sizes (8-30 μm), distances (⩽0.2 mm), acoustic pressures (20-40 kPa) and frequencies (40-100 kHz) on the relative acceleration of two approaching bubbles. Under these conditions, only variations in the magnitude of the attractive force were observed. Using coupled equations of radial and translational motions, the acceleration and secondary Bjerknes force were calculated and compared to the experimental data. The sonochemical synthesis of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) with different shapes and size distributions by using high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) operating at 463 kHz is reported. GNP formation proceeds through the reduction of Au(3+) to Au(0) by radicals generated by acoustic cavitation. TEM images reveal that GNPs show irregular shapes at 30 W, are primarily icosahedral at 50 W and form a significant amount of nanorods at 70 W. The size of GNPs decreases with increasing acoustic power with a narrower size distribution. Sonochemiluminescence images help in the understanding of the effect of HIFU in controlling the size and shapes of GNPs. The number of radicals that form and the mechanical forces that are generated control the shape and size of the GNPs. UV/Vis spectra and TEM images are used to propose a possible mechanism for the observed effects. High intensity ultrasound treatment has been used to generate electrocatalytically active (toward hydrogen evolution) surface on AlNi (50 wt.% Ni) alloy particles. Acoustic cavitation is responsible for the initiation of redox processes on the catalyst surface leading to changes in its composition. Cavitation impact on the surface composition of the metal alloy could be controlled by manipulating the sonication medium during ultrasound treatment. Evaluation of electrocatalytic performance, as well as surface composition studies of ultrasonically generated catalysts showed the advantageous use of sonication medium with reducing ability and high vapor pressure for the generation of highly efficient interface on Al-Ni alloy particles for water splitting reaction., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. In this study, the coalescence time between two contacting sub-resonance size bubbles was measured experimentally under an acoustic pressure ranging from 10kPa to 120kPa, driven at a frequency of 22.4kHz. The coalescence time obtained under sonication was much longer compared to that calculated by the film drainage theory for a free bubble surface without surfactants. It was found that under the influence of an acoustic field, the coalescence time could be probabilistic in nature, exhibiting upper and lower limits of coalescence times which are prolonged when both the maximum surface approach velocity and secondary Bjerknes force increases. The size of the two contacting bubbles is also important. For a given acoustic pressure, bubbles having a larger average size and size difference were observed to exhibit longer coalescence times. This could be caused by the phase difference between the volume oscillations of the two bubbles, which in turn affects the minimum film thickness reached between the bubbles and the film drainage time. These results will have important implications for developing film drainage theory to account for the effect of bubble translational and volumetric oscillations, bubble surface fluctuations and microstreaming., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Even though much knowledge on acoustic cavitation and its application has been accumulated over the past decades, further research is still required to develop industrial uses of acoustic cavitation. It is because the available information is mainly based on small-scale sonoreactors and the design and optimization of sonoreactors for large-scale applications have not been widely studied. In this study, the effects of liquid height/volume, initial concentration of the reactant and input acoustic power on sonochemical oxidation reactions including iodide ion oxidation, As(III) oxidation, and hydrogen peroxide generation were investigated using a 291kHz sonoreactor with various liquid height/volumes (50, 100, 200, 300, 500, and 1000mL) and input powers (23, 40, and 82W). As the liquid height/volume and the input power changed, the power density varied from 23 to 1640W/L and the maximum cavitation yields of triiodide ion for 23, 40, and 82W were observed at 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2/0.3L, respectively. It was found that low power was more effective for the small volume and the large volume required high power level and the moderate power density, approximately 400W/L, was suggested for the sonochemical oxidation of iodide ion in the 291kHz sonoreactor in this study. Similar results were observed in the generation of hydrogen peroxide and the sonochemical oxidation of As(III) to As(V). The inactivation of Enterobacter aerogenes in skim milk using low-frequency (20kHz) and high-frequency (850kHz) ultrasonication was investigated. It was found that low-frequency acoustic cavitation resulted in lethal damage to E. aerogenes. The bacteria were more sensitive to ultrasound in water than in reconstituted skim milk having different protein concentrations. However, high-frequency ultrasound was not able to inactivate E. aerogenes in milk even when powers as high as 50W for 60min were used. This study also showed that high-frequency ultrasonication had no influence on the viscosity and particle size of skim milk, whereas low-frequency ultrasonication resulted in the decrease in viscosity and particle size of milk. The decrease in particle size is believed to be due to the breakup of the fat globules, and possibly to the cleavage of the κ-casein present at the surface of the casein micelles. Whey proteins were also found to be slightly affected by low-frequency ultrasound, with the amounts of α-lactalbumin and β-lactoglobulin slightly decreasing., (Copyright © 2013. Graphene oxide (GO) supported Ag and Au mono-metallic and Au-Ag bimetallic catalysts were synthesized using a sonochemical method. Bimetallic catalysts containing different weight ratios of Au and Ag were loaded onto GO utilizing a low frequency horn-type ultrasonicator. High frequency ultrasonication was used to efficiently reduce Ag(I) and Au(III) ions in the presence of polyethylene glycol and 2-propanol. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM-EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to analyze the morphology, size, shape and chemical oxidation states of the prepared metallic catalysts on GO. The catalytic efficiency of the prepared catalysts were compared using 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) reduction reaction and the subsequent formation of 4-aminophenol (4-AP) that was also monitored using UV-vis spectrophotometry. The results revealed that Au-Ag-GO bimetallic catalysts showed high activity for the conversion of 4-NP to 4-AP than their monometallic counterparts. Amongst different weight ratios (1:1, 1:2 and 2:1) between Au and Ag, the 1:2 (Au:Ag) catalyst exhibited very good catalytic performance for the conversion of 4-NP to 4-AP. A total reduction of 4-NP took place within a short period of time if Au-GO was reduced first followed by Ag reduction, whereas a lower reduction rate was observed if Ag-GO was reduced first. The same trend was observed for all the ratios of bimetallic catalysts prepared by this method. The initial unfavorable reduction potential of Ag(I) is likely to be responsible for the above order. Molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) microspheres with diameters in the range 60-500 μm were synthesized in a continuous segmented flow microfluidic reactor and used as packing material for microtraps for the selective separation of benzo[a]pyrene (BAP) from environmental aqueous samples. The synthesis involved the pumping of monodisperse droplets of acetonitrile containing methacrylic acid as the functional monomer, BAP as a template, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linking monomer into the microchannels of the microfluidic reactor. The microspheres showed high adsorption capacity and selectivity for BAP in aqueous solutions; both are important for the environmental monitoring and analysis of BAP. The adsorption capacity for BAP of the smallest MIP microspheres (size range 60-80 μm), prepared as part of this study, was 75 mg g(-1) in aqueous solutions; furthermore, this adsorption capacity was close to 300 % higher than that of commercially used activated carbon. Microtraps packed with MIP retained BAP intact for at least 30 days, whereas microtraps packed with activated carbon for BAP showed 40 % reduction in BAP concentration for the same period. This study has demonstrated that MIP microtraps have significant potential for the selective enrichment and preservation of targeted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from complex environmental samples.

This study reports on the functional properties of 7% flaxseed oil/milk emulsion obtained by sonication (OM) using 20 kHz ultrasound (US) at 176 W for 1-8 min in two different delivery formulae, viz., ready-to-drink (RTD) and lactic acid gel. The RTD emulsions showed no change in viscosity after sonication for up to 8 min followed by storage up to a minimum of 9 days at 4±2 °C. Similarly, the oxidative stability of the RTD emulsion was studied by measuring the conjugated diene hydroperoxides (CD). The CD was unaffected after 8 min of ultrasonic processing. The safety aspect of US processing was evaluated by measuring the formation of CD at different power levels. The functional properties of OM gels were evaluated by small and large scale deformation studies. The sonication process improved the gelation characteristics, viz., decreased gelation time, increased elastic nature, decreased syneresis and increased gel strength. The presence of finer sono-emulsified oil globules, stabilized by partially denatured whey proteins, contributed to the improvements in the gel structure in comparison to sonicated and unsonicated pasteurized homogenized skim milk (PHSM) gels. The effect of shear on the solubilization of a range of dairy powders was investigated. The rate of solubilization of low solubility milk protein concentrate and micellar casein powders was examined during ultrasonication, high pressure homogenization and high-shear rotor-stator mixing and compared to low-shear overhead stirring. The high shear techniques were able to greatly accelerate the solubilization of these powders by physically breaking apart the powder agglomerates and accelerating the release of individual casein micelles into solution. This was achieved without affecting the structure of the solubilized proteins. The effect of high shear on the re-establishment of the mineral balance between the casein micelles and the serum was examined by monitoring the pH of the reconstituted skim milk powder after prior exposure to ultrasonication. Only minor differences in the re-equilibration of the pH were observed after sonication for up to 3 min, suggesting that the localized high shear forces exerted by sonication did not significantly affect the mass transfer of minerals from within the casein micelles., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. High-frequency (850 kHz) ultrasound was used to inactivate bacteria and yeast at different growth phases under controlled temperature conditions. Three species of bacteria, Enterobacter aerogenes, Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus epidermidis as well as a yeast, Aureobasidium pullulans were considered. The study shows that high-frequency ultrasound is highly efficient in inactivating the bacteria in both their exponential and stationary growth phases, and inactivation rates of more than 99% were achieved. TEM observation suggests that the mechanism of bacteria inactivation is mainly due to acoustic cavitation generated free radicals and H2O2. The rod-shaped bacterium B. subtilis was also found to be sensitive to the mechanical effects of acoustic cavitation. The aggregation of proteins after heating of calcium-fortified milks has been an ongoing problem in the dairy industry. This undesirable effect restricts the manufacture of calcium rich dairy products. To overcome this problem, a completely new approach in controlling the heat stability of dairy protein solutions, developed in our lab, has been employed. In this approach, high intensity, low frequency ultrasound is applied for a very short duration after a pre-heating step at ⩾70 °C. The ultrasound breaks apart whey/whey and whey/casein aggregates through the process of acoustic cavitation. Protein aggregates do not reform on subsequent post-heating, thereby making the systems heat stable. In this paper, the acid gelation properties of ultrasonicated calcium-enriched skim milks have also been investigated. It is shown that ultrasonication alone does not change the gelation properties significantly whereas a sequence of preheating (72 °C/1 min) followed by ultrasonication leads to decreased gelation times, decreased gel syneresis and increased skim milk viscosity in comparison to heating alone. Overall, ultrasonication has the potential to provide calcium-fortified dairy products with increased heat stability. However, enhanced gelation properties can only be achieved when ultrasonication is completed in conjunction with heating.

The effect of surfactants on the radial dynamics of a single sonoluminescing bubble has been investigated. Experimentally, it is observed that an increase in the surfactant concentration leads to a decline in the oscillation amplitude and hence light emission intensity. Numerical simulations support this result, showing that under the driving pressures required to achieve single bubble sonoluminescence (SBSL), the surface properties, namely, the surface elasticity and dilatational viscosity, contribute to the damping of the radial amplitude in the bubble oscillation. In most cases this stabilizes the bubble surface, and contributes to a decreased light intensity. A stronger driving pressure is necessary to achieve equivalent light emission to a surfactant-free bubble. However, as the driving pressure is increased, the surface stability also decreases, making it practically very difficult for a bubble to achieve high SBSL intensities in concentrated surfactant solutions. Although more stable owing to more mild pulsations, the instability mechanism for a surfactant-coated bubble at higher ambient radii is more likely to be of the Rayleigh-Taylor type than that of a clean bubble at the same given acoustic parameters, which can lead to bubble disintegration before correcting mechanisms can bring the bubble back into the stable sonoluminescence regime.

The multibubble sonoluminescence (MBSL) signals generated by 3.5 ms pulses of 515 kHz ultrasound in air-saturated ethylene glycol, water, and ethylene glycol/water mixtures were examined in the absence and presence of a range of solutes, including aliphatic alcohols of various chain lengths (C3-C6) and ionic and zwitterionic surfactants. In general, the alcohols quenched the SL in most solvent mixtures and the surfactants enhanced the sonoluminescence signal. However, in some solvent mixtures complex effects were observed in the presence of the solutes. The discussion presented rationalizes the varied behavior of the solutes on the MBSL observed in terms of their influence on inter- and intrabubble effects experienced by bubbles in an ultrasound field.

A simple theoretical model based on shear forces generated by the collapse of the ultrasound cavities near the surface of a microorganism is proposed. This model requires two parameters which take into account the number of acoustic cavitation bubbles, and the resistance of the cell wall of the microorganism to the shear forces generated by bubble collapse. To validate the model, high-power low frequency (20 kHz) ultrasound was used to inactivate two microorganisms with very different sizes, viz., a bacterium, Enterobacter aerogenes and a yeast, Aureobasidium pullulans. The inactivation ratio was experimentally measured as a function of sonication time for different ultrasound power and for different initial cell numbers. For both E. aerogenes and A. pullulans the Log of the inactivation ratio decreased linearly with sonication time, and the rate of inactivation increased (D-value decreased) with the increase in sonication power. The rate of inactivation was also found, for both microorganisms, to increase with a decrease in the initial cell number. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of high-intensity low-frequency (20 kHz) ultrasound treatment on the viability of bacteria suspension. More specifically, we have investigated the relationship between the deactivation efficiency and the physical (size, hydrophobicity) and biological (gram-status, growth phase) properties of the microbes. Enterobacter aerogenes, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus epidermidis, S. epidermidis SK and Staphylococcus pseudintermedius were chosen for this study owing to their varying physical and biological properties. The survival ratio of the bacteria suspension was measured as a function of the ultrasound power (up to 13 W) for a constant sonication time of 20 min. Transmission electron microscopy was used to evaluate the ultrasound-induced damages to the microbes. Ultrasound treatment resulted in lethal damage to E. aerogenes and B. subtilis (up to 4.5-log reduction), whereas Staphylococcus spp. were not affected noticeably. Further, E. aerogenes suspensions were more sensitive to ultrasonication in exponential growth phase than when they were in stationary phase. The results of this study demonstrate that the main reason for bacterial resistance to ultrasonic deactivation is due to the properties of the bacterial capsule. Ultrasound is known to promote nucleation of crystals and produce a narrower size distribution in a controlled and reproducible manner for the crystallisation process. Although there are various theories that suggest cavitation bubbles are responsible for sonocrystallisation, most studies use power ultrasonic horns that generate both intense shear and cavitation and this can mask the role that cavitation bubbles play. High frequency ultrasound from a plate transducer can be used to examine the effect of cavitation bubbles without the intense shear effect. This study reports the crystal size and morphology with various mixing speeds and ultrasound frequencies. The results show high frequency ultrasound produced sodium chloride crystals of similar size distribution as an ultrasonic horn. In addition, ultrasound generated sodium chloride crystals having a more symmetrical cubic structure compared to crystals produced by a high shear mixer., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Ultrasonic technique has been used for synthesising protein microspheres possessing specific physical and functional properties. Various proteins have been used as shell materials under different experimental conditions. In previous studies, thermal or chemical denaturation of the proteins was used to obtain stable bovine-serum albumin (BSA) and lysozyme microbubbles (MBs), respectively. It is ideal to establish a generic procedure to synthesise microspheres irrespective of the nature of the protein. In order to see if a generic procedure can be established, ultrasonic synthesis of lysozyme and BSA MBs was carried out under similar experimental conditions and their properties were evaluated. The size, size distribution and the stability of the MBs were significantly different for the lysozyme and BSA MBs. The size and size distribution of the lysozyme coated MBs were larger than BSA bubbles. The mechanical strength of MBs against the shear forces, generated when irradiated by high frequency ultrasound, was studied using pulsed-sonoluminescence (SL). This study indicated that lysozyme MBs were significantly more stable than BSA MBs. An increase in mechanical strength of the MBs may lead to an increase in their storage lifetime and stability against gas diffusion. The mechanical properties of the shell of ultrasonically synthesized lysozyme microbubbles, LSMBs, were evaluated by acoustic interrogation and nanoindentation techniques. The Young's modulus of LSMBs was found to be 1.0 ± 0.3 MPa and 0.6 ± 0.1 MPa when analyzed by flow cytometry and AFM, respectively. The shell elasticity and Young's modulus were not affected by the size of the microbubbles (MBs). The hydrogel-like protein shell of LSMBs offers a softer, more elastic and viscous interface compared to lipid-shelled MBs. We show that the acoustic interrogation technique is a real-time, fast, and high-throughput method to characterize the mechanical characteristics of air-filled microbubbles coated by a variety of materials.

Collagen (C) and cellulose are prominent biopolymers from the animal and plant kingdom and widely used in bioengineering. Albumin, on the other hand, is the most abundant plasma protein present in mammalian blood. In this work, collagen extracted from animal skin waste was blended with hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) and bovine serum albumin (A) and wet-spun to form hybrid biodegradable C/HEC/A fibers. They were further cross-linked with glutaraldehyde vapors and analyzed. X-ray diffraction and infra-red spectroscopic studies of the hybrid fibers display peaks corresponding to collagen, cellulose, and albumin. Incorporation of cellulose into the biopolymeric matrix leads to a reasonable improvement in mechanical, swelling, and thermal properties of hybrid fibers. Addition of albumin improves the regularity of fiber surface without altering the porosity as observed under a microscope. Hence, the formed hybrid biofibers can be potentially used as a suture material as well as for different biomedical applications due to their improved properties.

When subjected to an ultrasonic standing-wave field, cavitation bubbles smaller than the resonance size migrate to the pressure antinodes. As bubbles approach the antinode, they also move toward each other and either form a cluster or coalesce. In this study, the translational trajectory of two bubbles moving toward each other in an ultrasonic standing wave at 22.4 kHz was observed using an imaging system with a high-speed video camera. This allowed the speed of the approaching bubbles to be measured for much closer distances than those reported in the prior literature. The trajectory of two approaching bubbles was modeled using coupled equations of radial and translational motions, showing similar trends with the experimental results. We also indirectly measured the secondary Bjerknes force by monitoring the acceleration when bubbles are close to each other under different acoustic pressure amplitudes. Bubbles begin to accelerate toward each other as the distance between them gets shorter, and this acceleration increases with increasing acoustic pressure. The current study provides experimental data that validates the theory on the movement of bubbles and forces acting between them in an acoustic field that will be useful in understanding bubble coalescence in an acoustic field.

Biocatalysis based effluent treatment has outclassed the presently favored physico-chemical treatments due to nil sludge production and monetary savings. Azo dyes are commonly employed in the leather industry and pose a great threat to the environment. Here, we show the degradation of C. I. Acid blue 113 using horseradish peroxidase (HRP) assisted with H2O2 as a co-substrate. It was observed that 0.08 U HRP can degrade 3 mL of 30 mg/L dye up to 80% within 45 min with the assistance of 14 μL of H2O2 at pH 6.6 and 30°C. The feasibility of using the immobilized HRP for dye degradation was also examined and the results show up to 76% dye degradation under similar conditions to that of free HRP with the exception of longer contact time of 240 min. Recycling studies reveal that the immobilized HRP can be recycled up to 3 times for dye degradation. Kinetics drawn for the free HRP catalyzed reaction marked a lower K m and higher V max values, which denotes a proper and faster affinity of the enzyme towards the dye, when compared to the immobilized HRP. The applicability of HRP for treating the actual tannery dye-house wastewater was also demonstrated.

We report loading of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) on to lysozyme-shelled microbubbles. The interaction between lysozyme-shelled microbubbles and vitamin C was studied by use of cyclic and differential pulse voltammetry, zeta potential measurements, and scanning electron microscopy. The effect of microbubbles on electrochemical measurement of ascorbic acid was evaluated. The linear range for ascorbic acid obtained for differential pulse measurement in the presence of 1 mg mL(-1) microbubbles was 1-50 μmol L(-1) (y = 0.067x + 0.130, r(2) = 0.995), with a detection limit of 0.5 μmol L(-1). The experimental conditions, i.e., pH and ionic strength, were optimized to improve the interaction between ascorbic acid and lysozyme-shelled microbubbles. The results were satisfactory when the interaction was performed for 1 h in aqueous solution at pH 6. The amount of vitamin C loaded on the microbubbles (90% of the analyte added, RSD(inter-expt.) = 3%, n = 6) and the stability of microbubbles-ascorbic acid complex (until 72 h at 25 °C) were also evaluated by use of differential pulse voltammetry and zeta potential measurements.

Gelation is a significant operation in dairy processing. Protein gelation can be affected by several factors such as temperature, pH, or enzyme addition. Recently, the use of ultrasonication has been shown to have a significant impact on the formation of whey protein gels. In this work, the effect of ultrasonication on the gelation of casein systems was investigated. Gels were formed by the addition of 7.6 mm Tetra Sodium Pyro Phosphate (TSPP) to 5 wt% micellar casein (MC) solutions. Sonication at 20 KHz and 31 W for up to 30 min changed the surface hydrophobicity of the proteins, whereas surface charge was unaltered. Sonication before the addition of TSPP formed a firm gel with a fine protein network and low syneresis. Conversely, sonication after TSPP addition led to an inconsistent weak-gel-like structure with high syneresis. Gel strength in both cases increased significantly after short sonication times, while the viscoelastic properties were less affected. Overall, the results showed that ultrasonication can have a significant effect on the final gel properties of casein systems.

The formation of the hydrated electron through the secondary reaction, H + OH(–) → H(2)O + e(aq), has been examined in the sonolysis of argon-saturated aqueous solutions at an ultrasound frequency of 355 kHz. The detection of the hydrated electron was achieved by measuring its reaction with the one-electron acceptors Fe(CN)(6)(3–) and methyl viologen. The results obtained indicate that hydrated electrons are produced predominately at the bubble/aqueous solution interface at comparatively high local concentrations, estimated to be >>1.5 × 10(–3) M. The half life of the hydrated electron under such conditions is estimated to be <<60 ns.

The present work is aimed at investigating the mechanical and in vitro biological properties of polyphenylene ether ether sulfone (PPEES)/nanohydroxyapatite (nHA) composite fibers. Electrospinning was used to prepare nanofiber composite mats of PPEES/nHA with different weight percentages of the inorganic filler, nHA. The fabricated composites were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR)-attenuated total reflectance spectroscopy (ATR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) techniques. The mechanical properties of the composite were studied with a tensile tester. The FTIR-ATR spectrum depicted the functional group as well as the interaction between the PPEES and nHA composite materials; in addition, the elemental groups were identified with EDX analysis. The morphology of the nanofiber composite was studied by SEM. Tensile strength analysis of the PPEES/nHA composite revealed the elastic nature of the nanofiber composite reinforced with nHA and suggested significant mechanical strength of the composite. The biomineralization studies performed using simulated body fluid with increased incubation time showed enhanced mineralization, which showed that the composites possessed high bioactivity property. Cell viability of the nanofiber composite, studied with osteoblast (MG-63) cells, was observed to be higher in the composites containing higher concentrations of nHA.

Air-filled lysozyme microbubbles (LSMBs) were engineered as a support for the immobilization of gold nanoparticles and an enzyme, alkaline phosphatase, in order to develop micro-antimicrobial and biosensing devices. Gold nanoparticles immobilized on LSMBs significantly improved the antimicrobial efficacy of the microbubbles against M. lysodeikticus. The surface functionalization of the microbubbles with gold nanoparticles did not affect their echogenicity when exposed to an ultrasound imaging probe. Alkaline phosphatase was conjugated on the surface of microbubbles without compromising its enzymatic activity. The functionalized microbubbles were used for the detection of paraoxon in aqueous solutions.

A comparison between the temperatures within imploding acoustic cavitation bubbles and the extent of sonoluminescence (SL) quenching by C(1)-C(5) aliphatic alcohols in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium ethylsulfate ([EMIM][EtSO(4)], a well known imidazolium based room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL)), has been made at an ultrasound frequency of 213 kHz. The temperatures obtained ranged from 3500 ± 200K, in neat [EMIM][EtSO(4)], to about 3200 ± 200K in RTIL-alcohol containing solutions. It was also found that the SL intensity decreased with increasing concentration (up to 1M) of the alcohols to a greater extent compared with the relative changes to the bubble temperatures. Both the extent of the reduction in the bubble temperatures and the SL quenching were much smaller than those obtained in comparable aqueous solutions containing aliphatic alcohols. Possible reasons for the differences in the observed trends between water/alcohol and [EMIM][EtSO(4)]/alcohol systems under sonication at 213 kHz are discussed., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Samples of fresh skim milk, reconstituted micellar casein, and casein powder were sonicated at 20 kHz to investigate the effect of ultrasonication. For fresh skim milk, the average size of the remaining fat globules was reduced by approximately 10 nm after 60 min of sonication; however, the size of the casein micelles was determined to be unchanged. A small increase in soluble whey protein and a corresponding decrease in viscosity also occurred within the first few minutes of sonication, which could be attributed to the breakup of casein-whey protein aggregates. No measurable changes in free casein content could be detected in ultracentrifuged skim milk samples sonicated for up to 60 min. A small, temporary decrease in pH resulted from sonication; however, no measurable change in soluble calcium concentration was observed. Therefore, casein micelles in fresh skim milk were stable during the exposure to ultrasonication. Similar results were obtained for reconstituted micellar casein, whereas larger viscosity changes were observed as whey protein content was increased. The effects of the water-soluble polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) on the multibubble sonoluminescence (MBSL) intensity generated in aqueous solutions exposed to ultrasound at the two ultrasound frequencies of 20 and 363 kHz have been examined. In both cases, the presence of PVP, at concentrations of up to 2 g/100 mL, was found to enhance the MBSL intensity emitted from the solutions. On the basis of the intensity behavior of the SL observed from aqueous solutions containing PVP/surfactant and PVP/alcohol mixtures, it is suggested that PVP enhances MBSL by increasing the number of active bubbles in the system by hindering bubble-bubble coalescence processes and probably also by changing the structure of the bubble "clouds" formed at the acoustic antinodes in solution. The influence of PVP on bubble-bubble coalescence rates was also measured to support the interpretation of the MBSL emission experiments.

Micromachined pits on a substrate can be used to nucleate and stabilize microbubbles in a liquid exposed to an ultrasonic field. Under suitable conditions, the collapse of these bubbles can result in light emission (sonoluminescence, SL). Hydroxyl radicals (OH()) generated during bubble collapse can react with luminol to produce light (sonochemiluminescence, SCL). SL and SCL intensities were recorded for several regimes related to the pressure amplitude (low and high acoustic power levels) at a given ultrasonic frequency (200kHz) for pure water, and aqueous luminol and propanol solutions. Various arrangements of pits were studied, with the number of pits ranging from no pits (comparable to a classic ultrasound reactor), to three-pits. Where there was more than one pit present, in the high pressure regime the ejected microbubbles combined into linear (two-pits) or triangular (three-pits) bubble clouds (streamers). In all situations where a pit was present on the substrate, the SL was intensified and increased with the number of pits at both low and high power levels. For imaging SL emitting regions, Argon (Ar) saturated water was used under similar conditions. SL emission from aqueous propanol solution (50mM) provided evidence of transient bubble cavitation. In recent years, the physical and chemical effects of ultrasound in liquid and solid media have been extensively used in food processing applications. Harnessing the physical forces generated by ultrasound, in the absence and presence of cavitation, for specific food processing applications such as emulsification, filtration, tenderisation and functionality modification have been highlighted. While some applications, such as filtration and emulsification are "mature" industrial processes, other applications, such as functionality modification, are still in their early stages of development. However, various investigations discussed suggest that ultrasonic processing of food and dairy ingredients is a potential and viable technology that will be used by many food industries in the near future., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. The effect of temperature on the sensitivity and sampling rate is studied for a flow injection analysis (FIA) system that uses a membrane separation cell fitted with a polymer inclusion membrane (PIM) for the determination of Zn(II). A temperature of 50 °C for the flowing donor and acceptor solutions and the membrane separation cell improves the sensitivity and the sampling rate relative to 20 °C up to 10-fold and 2-fold, respectively. Studies on the stability of the PIM are reported that show a limited loss of the membrane liquid phase into the aqueous phases used in the FIA system but this has exhibited a negligible effect on the amount of Zn(II) transported across the membrane. Most importantly, the extent of leaching of the PIM components is shown to depend on the nature of the aqueous phase with the membrane eventually reaching a stable composition. It is also shown that the application of ultrasound to the membrane separation cell leads to a slight increase in sensitivity without affecting the long term membrane stability., (Copyright © 2012 Elsevier B.V. The redox reactions of organic radicals, with Fe(CN)63− and methyl viologen, generated from the sonochemical decomposition of aliphatic alcohols in aqueous solutions, have been studied. The number of radicals produced was found to relate to the amount of adsorbed alcohol molecules (Gibbs surface excess) at the gas−aqueous solution interface for any bulk solution concentration of the alcohol. The majority of the radicals produced stem from the thermal degradation of the alcohol molecules that have entered imploding cavitation bubbles. The maximum rate of reduction at 355 kHz, of Fe(CN)63−, was 2.6 ± 0.3 μM min−1, whereas for methyl viologen, it was 1.2 ± 0.3 μM min−1 under the conditions used.The difference in the rates is attributed to the reaction of various pyrolytically produced organic radicals with the methyl viologen radical cation. The possible reactions occurring in the sonolysis of alcohol/water systems are discussed in detail.

Microbubbles (MBs) have specific acoustic properties that make them useful as contrast agents in ultrasound imaging. The use of the MBs in clinical practice led to the development of more sensitive imaging techniques both in cardiology and radiology. Protein-MBs are typically obtained by dispersing a gas phase in the protein solution and the protein deposited/cross-linked on the gas-liquid interface stabilizes the gas core. Innovative applications of protein-MBs prompt the investigation on the properties of MBs obtained using different proteins that are able to confer them specific properties and functionality. Recently, we have synthesized stable air-filled lysozyme-MBs (LysMBs) using high-intensity ultrasound-induced emulsification of a partly reduced lysozyme in aqueous solutions. The stability of LysMBs suspension allows for post-synthetic modification of MBs surface. In the present work, the protein folded state and the biodegradability property of LysMBs were investigated by limited proteolysis. Moreover, LysMBs were coated and functionalized with a number of biomacromolecules (proteins, polysaccharides, nucleic acids). Remarkably, LysMBs show a high DNA-binding ability and protective effects of the nucleic acids from nucleases and, further, the ability to transform the bacteria cells. These results highlight on the possibility of using LysMBs for delivery of proteins and nucleic acids in prophylactic and therapeutic applications.
