201. Histomorphometric analysis of human maxillary sinus lift with a new bone substitute biocomposite: a preliminary report

Abstract

Purpose: To analyze radiographic and histological outcomes of maxillary sinus floor augmentation using a calcium-sulfate based allograft containing demineralized bone matrix particles. Materials and Methods: Fifteen maxillary sinus lift procedures with simultaneous placement of titanium implants were performed in 12 patients of both genders aged 36–71 years. Each sinus cavity was filled by the biocomposite. After 3 months of healing, all surgical sites were uncovered and bone biopsies were retrieved for undecalcified histology and histomorphometry. The ratio between the original and the grafted sinus height (GSH/OSH) was computed using a panoramic radiography taken immediately after surgery and at 3 months of healing, and the two ratios were compared by Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: By 3 months, all implants were stable without clinical and radiographic signs of infection. Significant changes in GSH/OSH during healing were seen (2.7 ± 0.6 initially vs. 2.6 ± 0.5 after healing; p = 0.01). Histologic findings showed newly formed bone surrounding the residual grafted particles without inflammation. At 3 months, mean regenerated bone density was 33.8 ± 8.6%; marrow spaces amounted to 32.3 ± 10.3%; residual graft was 33.9 ± 9.0%. Similar histomorphometric and radiographic results were obtained independently from patient age or sex. Conclusions: The analysed putty seems to be a safe and effective graft material for maxillary sinus floor augmentation by accelerating bone regeneration and thus reducing the healing time.

Abstract

Summary Objective To assess rotation and translation movements of the mandible at maximum mouth opening in a group of patients successfully rehabilitated after condylar fractures. Materials and methods Using a three-dimensional motion analyser, free movements of mouth opening were recorded in nine patients, and divided into their rotation and gliding components. Surface electromyography (EMG) of the masticatory and sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscles was performed during maximum voluntary teeth clenching (MVC). Data were compared with those collected in healthy adults. Results At maximum mouth opening, the total displacement of the mandibular interincisor point was 86% of reference value ( p >0.05, Student's t test), with a reduced vertical displacement (84% of reference value, p =0.012). Percentage mandibular rotation was significantly larger in patients (82%) than in reference subjects (77%, p =0.005). During MVC, patients had more asymmetric EMG potentials ( p =0.018), with greater mandibular torque ( p p =0.003). EMG indices were used to formulate an overall performance score that was related to the characteristics of mouth opening ( r =0.557). Conclusion Notwithstanding a good recovery in the total mandibular movement, the rotation/translation components of mouth opening were modified. The overall EMG performance score could be used to predict the characteristics of mandibular motion.

Abstract

Summary Aim To evaluate left and right masseter and anterior temporalis muscle activity in patients before and after orthognathic surgery. Patients Nineteen patients were enrolled, 9 males and 10 females, aged 17–34 years. Four patients were suffering from a prognathic syndrome (skeletal class II with mandibular retrusion) and were candidates for surgical correction involving a mandibular Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy (BSSO), whereas the other 15 patients showed a progenic syndrome (skeletal class III with mandibular protrusion) and were selected for bimaxillary surgery with maxillary advancement and mandibular retrusion. Methods Electromyographic examinations were carried out on all subjects presurgically and 6–8 months postoperatively. To verify the neuromuscular equilibrium, the electromyographic activities of both the right and left masseter and anterior temporalis muscles were registered and analysed calculating: percentage overlapping coefficient (POC, index of the symmetric distribution of the muscular activity determined by the occlusion) and torque coefficient (TC, index of presence of mandibular torque). Results After surgery, a trend in the improvement of POC and TC indices was found, with a reduced intragroup variability. Conclusion The electromyographic evaluation allowed the impact of occlusion on neuromuscular equilibrium to be quantified, and showed that improvements gained by surgical intervention are primarily due to better occlusal stability and not to biomechanical advantages.

Abstract

The relationship of structural defects to the electrical properties of semiconductor materials is discussed. Etch pit density (EPD) measurements are normally used to evaluate dislocation density. A nondestructive, quantitative method for evaluation of substrate defect populations is needed for quality assurance. In this study, double crystal x-ray diffraction rocking curves are investigated for this purpose. Rocking curve widths are determined experimentally for a set of GaAs substrated with a range of EPD. The experimentally determined values are also compared with those calculated from simulated rocking curves based on x-ray diffraction theory. Limited correlation between rocking curve widths and EPD is observed.

Abstract

Objectives: To compare the electromyographic (EMG) characteristics of masticatory and neck muscles in patients with natural dentition, teeth-supported prostheses and implantsupported prostheses. Materials and methods: Twenty-five subjects aged 40‐80 years were examined. Five patients had maxillary and mandibular implant-supported fixed prostheses; five patients had mandibular implant-supported fixed prosthesis and maxillary removable complete denture; seven patients had implant-supported fixed prosthesis (one arch) and natural dentition or full-arch tooth-fixed prosthesis (one arch); and eight control subjects had natural dentition or single tooth-fixed prostheses. Surface EMG of masseter, temporal and sternocleidomastoid muscles was performed during maximum teeth clenching and unilateral gum chewing. Interarch dental contacts were assessed with shim stocks. Results: All groups had similar interarch dental contacts (P40.05). During clenching, patients with maxillary and mandibular implant-supported fixed prostheses had unbalanced standardized masseter and temporalis anterior activities (74%), with significantly larger values found in the other patients and control subjects (all mean values larger than 86%, P ¼0.017). All patients chewed with significantly larger muscular potentials than control subjects (on average, 1434‐2100mVs vs. 980mVs,P ¼0.04), and had altered muscular patterns (left side, P ¼0.021). The patients with one arch with natural dentition/tooth fixed prostheses had chewing muscular patterns similar to the control subjects. Conclusions: Clenching with the analyzed prostheses was performed with a relative increment of temporalis activity. Neuromuscular coordination during chewing was larger in patients who maintained their teeth or dental roots, independently from the number of dental contacts.

Abstract

Noonan syndrome, characterized by short stature, facial anomalies, heart disease and cryptorchidism in males, is an autosomal dominant, genetically heterogeneous disease. Approximately 50 % of Noonan syndrome cases are caused by gain-of-function mutations in PTPN11, encoding the tyrosine phosphatase (SHP2) and 5 % are caused by KRAS mutations. Recently, a new mutation in SOS1 gene has been identified in approximately 20 % of cases of Noonan syndrome without PTPN11 mutation. That difference in genotype has a relationship with phenotype that we must investigate. We report a case of Noonan syndrome due to an SOS1 mutation; we describe his phenotype and subsequent outcome.

Abstract

A series of 1-m long Nb3Sn dipole models has been built at Fermilab in an attempt to refine the wind-and-react technology for Nb3Sn accelerator magnets. Three models made with Powder-in-Tube Nb3Sn strand reached their design field of 10 T demonstrating a good reproducibility of magnet quench performance and field quality. Recently a new dipole “mirror” model based on Nb3Sn coil made of improved Restack Rod Process (RRP) strand was constructed and tested reaching the maximum field above 11 T. This paper describes the parameters of the RRP strand and cable used as well as the design, fabrication and test results of this magnet.

Abstract

To identify reference standards and possible esthetic features in facial proportion and form of Italian adult women.A three-dimensional electromagnetic digitizer was used to collect the coordinates of 50 facial landmarks (forehead, eyes, nose, cheeks, mouth, jaw, ears) in 71 healthy, reference women (18-30 years old) and in 48 "attractive" women selected during a beauty competition; soft tissue facial angles, distances and volumes were computed.Attractive women had wider faces with a relatively larger upper facial third (forehead); a larger facial width relative to facial height. The mouth was larger, and lips were more prominent; the interlabial angle was reduced. Overall, the soft-tissue profile was more prominent, with a larger maxillary prominence relative to the mandible. Faces in the attractive women were more flat in the horizontal plane. For several of the analyzed measurements, similar patterns were observed for the 36 women participants to the semi-final stage of the beauty competition, the 12 finalists, and the winner. The winner of the beauty competition deviated from the reference women more than the other two groups of attractive women.Esthetic reference values were determined for a population of 18-30 year olds that reflect contemporary society.

Abstract

Normal bone homeostasis involves a balance between osteoblast and osteoclast action, regulated by hormones and cytokine stimuli. Hemodialysis patients appear to have increased production of interleukin-1 (IL-1), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and glycosaminoglycans (GAG) in serum. IL-1 plays a role in the synthesis, degradation and degree of sulphatation of ECM components such as glycosaminoglycans. Also, continuous changes in the ECM involve enzymes such as beta-N-acetyl-d-glucosaminidase (beta-NAG) and beta-d-glucuronidase (beta-GLU) which act on different GAG classes and collagen fibers. We examined the effects of IL-1alpha on ECM synthesis and the related enzymes in human uremic osteoblast cultures. We also measured the levels of IL-1beta, and IL-6 and alkaline phosphatase activity. In biopsies of uremic bone there was less ECM deposition than resorption associated with changes in osteoblast morphology. In vitro osteoblast proliferation was higher (Por =0.01), and extracellular GAG lower (Por =0.01) than in controls. The enzyme beta-NAG was high (Por =0.05) but there were no noteworthy changes in beta-GLU. ELISA of the medium indicated spontaneous production of IL-1beta and IL-6, which significantly increased after IL-1alpha treatment compared to controls. IL-1alpha reduced alkaline phosphatase activity (Por =0.01) in uremic osteoblast cultures. IL-1 acts on osteoblasts with decreases in GAG synthesis and alkaline phosphatase activity, while beta-NAG increases. This lead to a reduction in the organic component in ECM and its mineralization, and to changes in the regulation of cytokine activity by GAG. The enzymatic breakdown might be facilitated by metabolic acidosis and failed osteoblast differentiation; these factors could be correlated with different degrees of osteodystrophy.

Abstract

Perceptual learning is usually thought to be exclusively driven by the stimuli presented during training (and the underlying synaptic learning rules). In some way, we are slaves of our visual experiences. However, learning can occur even when no stimuli are presented at all. For example, Gabor contrast detection improves when only a blank screen is presented and observers are asked to imagine Gabor patches. Likewise, performance improves when observers are asked to imagine the nonexisting central line of a bisection stimulus to be offset either to the right or left. Hence, performance can improve without stimulus presentation. As shown in the auditory domain, performance can also improve when the very same stimulus is presented in all learning trials and observers were asked to discriminate differences which do not exist (observers were not told about the set up). Classic models of perceptual learning cannot handle these situations since they need proper stimulus presentation, i.e., variance in the stimuli, such as a left versus right offset in the bisection stimulus. Here, we show that perceptual learning with identical stimuli occurs in the visual domain, too. Second, we linked the two paradigms by telling observers that only the very same bisection stimulus was presented in all trials and asked them to imagine the central line to be offset either to the left or right. As in imagery learning, performance improved.

Abstract

The research diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders (RDC/TMD) are used for the classification of patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). Surface electromyography of the right and left masseter and temporalis muscles was performed during maximum teeth clenching in 103 TMD patients subdivided according to the RDC/TMD into 3 non-overlapping groups: (a) 25 myogenous; (b) 61 arthrogenous; and (c) 17 psycogenous patients. Thirty-two control subjects matched for sex and age were also measured. During clenching, standardized total muscle activities (electromyographic potentials over time) significantly differed: 131.7 microV/muVs % in the normal subjects, 117.6 microV/microVs % in the myogenous patients, 105.3 microV/microVs % in the arthrogenous patients, 88.7 microV/microVs % in the psycogenous patients (p0.001, analysis of covariance). Symmetry in the temporalis muscles was larger in normal subjects (86.3%) and in myogenous patients (84.9%) than in arthrogenous (82.7%), and psycogenous patients (80.5%) (p=0.041). No differences were found for masseter muscle symmetry and torque coefficient (p0.05). Surface electromyography of the masticatory muscles allowed an objective discrimination among different RDC/TMD subgroups. This evaluation could assist conventional clinical assessments.

Abstract

The modifications induced by microgravity on the coordinated patterns of movement of the head, trunk, and limbs are reported on extensively. However, apparently there is little data on the masticatory muscles. In normal gravitational conditions, information from the neck and stomatognathic apparatus play a role in maintaining the body's balance and equilibrium. The current pilot study used normal gravity conditions to investigate the hypothesis of a functional coupling between occlusion and neck muscles and body postural oscillations. The immediate effect of modified occlusal surfaces on the contraction pattern of the sternocleidomastoid muscles during maximum voluntary clenching and on the oscillation of the center of foot pressure was analyzed in 11 male astronauts (aged 31-54 yrs). All subjects were healthy and free from pathologies of the neck and stomatognathic apparatus. Occlusal splints were prepared using impressions of their dental arches. The splints were modeled on the mandibular arch, had only posterior contacts, and were modified to obtain a more symmetric, standardized contraction of the masseter and temporalis muscles during teeth clenching. Surface EMG activity of the sternocleidomastoid muscles was recorded during a maximal voluntary clench with and without the splint. Sternocleidomastoid potentials were standardized as percent of the mean potentials recorded during a maximum contralateral rotation of the head, and the symmetry of the EMG waves of left- and right-side muscles was measured. Body sway was assessed with and without the splint, either with eyes open or closed. The variations of the center of foot pressure were analyzed through bivariate analysis, and the area of the 90% standard ellipse was computed. Within each visual condition (eyes open or closed), the difference between the areas of oscillation measured with and without the splint was computed. Muscular activity was more symmetric with the splint. The area of oscillation of the center of foot pressure was larger without the splint than with the splint, both with eyes open and eyes closed. The modifications, induced by the occlusal splint in the sternocleidomastoid muscles' symmetry, and center of foot pressure differential area with closed eyes, were significantly related (p0.05): the larger the increment in muscular symmetry, the smaller the area of oscillation with the splint as compared to without the splint. A functionally more symmetric maxillo-mandibular position resulted in a more symmetric sternocleidomastoid muscle contraction pattern and less body sway. Modifications in the contraction of the masticatory muscles may therefore affect the whole body.

Abstract

The performance of the LHC depends critically on the low-triplets, located on either side of the interaction points. Each triplet consists of four superconducting quadrupole magnets, which must operate reliably at up to 215 T/m, sustain high heat loads and have an excellent field quality. A collaboration between CERN, Fermilab and KEK was set up in 1996 to design and build the triplet systems, and after nine years of joint effort the production will be completed in 2005. We retrace the main events of the project and present the performance of the low-quadrupoles built by KEK and Fermilab and of other elements of the triplet. The assembly of the first triplet at CERN and plans for tunnel installation and commissioning in the LHC are also reported.

Abstract

A new quench detection and protection system for superconducting accelerator magnets was developed for the Fermilab’s Magnet Test Facility (MTF). This system is based on a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) module, and it is made of mostly commercially available, integrated hardware and software components. It provides all the functions of our existing VME-based quench detection and protection system, but in addition the new system is easily scalable to protect multiple magnets powered independently and provides a more powerful user interface and analysis tools. The new system has been used successfully for testing LHC Interaction Region Quadrupoles correctors and High Field Magnet HFDM04. In this paper we describe the system and present results.

Abstract

The Fermilab Magnet Test Facility has tested high-temperature superconductor (HTS) power leads for cryogenic feed boxes to be placed at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) interaction regions and at the new BTeV C0 interaction region of the Fermilab Tevatron. A new test facility was designed and operated, successfully testing 20 pairs of HTS power leads for the LHC and 2 pairs of HTS power leads for the BTeV experiment. This paper describes the design and operation of the cryogenics, process controls, data acquisition, and quench management systems. Results from the facility commissioning are included, as is the performance of a new insulation method to prevent frost accumulation on the warm ends of the power leads.

Abstract

Objectives: To compare the electromyographic (EMG) characteristics of masticatory muscles in patients with fixed implant-supported prostheses and implant overdentures. Material and methods: Nineteen subjects aged 45–79 years were examined. Fourteen were edentulous and had been successfully rehabilitated with (a) maxillary and mandibular implant-supported fixed prostheses (seven patients); (b) mandibular implant overdentures and maxillary complete dentures (seven patients). Five control subjects had natural dentition or single/partial (no more than two teeth) tooth or implant fixed dentures. Surface EMG of the masseter and temporal muscles was performed during unilateral gum chewing and during maximum teeth clenching. To reduce biological and instrumental noise, all values were standardized as percentage of a maximum clenching on cotton rolls. Results: During clenching, temporal muscle symmetry was larger in control subjects and fixed implant-supported prosthesis patients than in overdenture patients (analysis of variance, P=0.005). No differences were found in masseter muscle symmetry or in muscular torque. Muscle activities (integrated areas of the EMG potentials over time) were significantly larger in control subjects than in implant-supported prosthesis patients (P=0.014). In both patient groups, a poor neuromuscular coordination during chewing, with altered muscular patterns, and a smaller left–right symmetry than in control subjects were found (P=0.05). No differences in masticatory frequency were found. Conclusion: Surface EMG analysis of clenching and chewing showed that fixed implant-supported prostheses and implant overdentures were functionally equivalent. Neuromuscular coordination during chewing was inferior to that found in subjects with natural dentition.

Abstract

The three-dimensional coordinates of 13 soft-tissue landmarks on the ears were obtained by a computerized digitizer in 28 subjects with Down's syndrome aged 12-45 years, and in 449 sex, age and ethnic group matched controls. From the landmarks, left and right linear distances (ear width and length), ratios (ear width-to-ear length), areas (ear area), angles (angle of the auricle versus the facial midplane) and the three-dimensional symmetry index were calculated. For both males and females, all linear dimensions and areas were significantly (Analysis of Variance, P0.001) larger in the reference subjects than in the subjects with Down's syndrome. All values significantly increased as a function of age (P0.05); the increment was larger in the reference subjects than in the subjects with Down's syndrome. On both sides of the face, the subjects with Down's syndrome had larger ear width-to-ear length ratios, and larger angles of the auricle versus the facial midplane than the reference subjects. The three-dimensional symmetry index was significantly larger in the reference subjects and in the older persons. In conclusion, ear dimensions, position and shape significantly differed in subjects with Down's syndrome when compared to sex, age and ethnic group matched controls. Some of the differences were sex and age related.

Abstract

A 10 T racetrack magnet (HFDB‐03) wound with pre‐reacted Nb3Sn Rutherford cable has been fabricated and tested at Fermilab. This magnet is the third one in a proof‐of‐principle series for the use of the React‐and‐Wind technology in common‐coil dipole magnets for future accelerators. It consists of two flat racetrack coils (28 turns each) separated by 5 mm. The maximum field on the coil, at the short sample limit of 16530 A, is 10 tesla. The cable has 41 strands with 0.7 mm diameter and the minimum bend radius in the magnet ends is 90 mm. The predecessor of this magnet (HFDB‐02) reached 78 % of the short sample limit at 7.7 T. The mechanical design was improved and the fabrication procedure was slightly modified in order to address possible causes of limitation. In this paper we present the mechanical design and analysis of HFDB‐03, the modifications to the fabrication procedure and the test results.

Abstract

The biocompatibility of dental materials is a topic of increasing importance for dentists. We investigated the effects of alloys for ceramic crowns and removable prostheses on the skin and lymphoid organs of rats. We used three groups of Sprague Dawley rats: group I as the control, with groups II and III implanted with different biomaterials into subcutaneous pockets. After sacrifice, the rat skin around the implant and the lymph nodes was studied. The tissues of implanted rats were morphologically different from the control animals as they showed a number of mast cells that increased 7 days after the implant with both alloys. These cells decreased 14 days after the implant with alloy for ceramic crowns whereas they were still high 28 days after the implant with alloy for removable prostheses. The findings suggest that both alloys induced different and time-dependent inflammatory reactions. Our findings have importance in the future rational design of biocompatible implantable and blood-contact biomaterials.

Abstract

Costello syndrome (CS) is a rare, multiple congenital anomaly syndrome with characteristic dysmorphic features, cardiac anomalies and a tendency to develop certain cancers. Phenotypically there is some overlap with other genetic disorders, notably cardio-facio-cutaneous (CFC) syndrome and Noonan syndrome (NS), suggesting that these syndromes may be allelic. We recently identified PTPN11, which encodes the non-receptor protein tyrosine phosphatase, SHP-2, as a major NS disease gene. In this report, we screened a cohort of 27 patients, with the clinical diagnosis of CS, for PTPN11 mutations using denaturing high performance liquid chromatography analysis. No mutations of the PTPN11 gene were found in the CS patients. Common polymorphisms in introns 6 and 7 and exon 8 were identified in four individuals. With our previous exclusion of PTPN11 mutations in CFC syndrome, these data suggest distinct genetic etiologies for Noonan, CFC and Costello syndromes.

Abstract

To prevent relapse after orthodontic treatment, retention is often considered indispensable. Soft tissues are thought to have a significant influence on dental movements. To quantify the influence of masticatory muscles on post-treatment relapse, and in an attempt to avoid unnecessary procedures, 2 male orthodontic patients (13 and 30 years old at debonding) were followed up. The patients completed 2 years of fixed orthodontic treatment and received no post-orthodontic retention. After 1 week and again after 6 months, alginate impressions of dental arches and a surface electromyographic (EMG) assessment of the masseter and temporalis muscles during maximum voluntary clenching were performed. The younger patient received surface EMG monitoring once a month for the first 6 months and at the 1-year follow-up appointment. Arch dimensions and the 3-dimensional inclination of the facial axis of the clinical crown (FACC) were measured using a computerized digitizer. Symmetry in muscular contraction was measured by the percentage overlapping coefficient (POC), and potential lateral displacing components were assessed by the torque coefficient (TC). At the 6-month follow-up, no clinical modifications were observed. Quantitative evaluation assessed that arch dimensions had changed slightly (up to 1 mm). While the adolescent patient had no modifications in FACC inclinations, the 30-year-old patient showed significant alterations (up to 18 degrees). In all examinations of the adolescent patient, POC was higher than 86% and TC was lower than 10%. In the adult, POC was inside the normal range, while all TCs were higher than 10.5%. The larger TC measured in the adult may explain the larger modifications in the 3-dimensional position of his dental crowns. In conclusion, a surface EMG assessment may help in the detection of patients who might need post-orthodontic retention.

Abstract

Objective To supply quantitative information about the facial soft tissues of adult operated patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP). Design, Setting, and Patients The three-dimensional coordinates of soft tissue facial landmarks were obtained using an electromagnetic digitizer in 18 Caucasian patients with CLP (11 males and 7 females aged 19 to 27 years) and 162 healthy controls (73 females and 89 males aged 18 to 30 years). From the landmarks, 15 facial dimensions and two angles were calculated. Data were compared with those collected in healthy individuals by computing z-scores. Two summary anthropometric measurements for quantifying craniofacial variations were assessed in both the patients and reference subjects: the mean z-score (an index of overall facial size), and its SD, called the craniofacial variability index (an index of facial harmony). Results In treated patients with CLP, facial size was somewhat smaller than in normal individuals, but in all occasions the mean z-score fell inside the normal interval (mean ± 2 SD). Almost all patients had a craniofacial variability index larger than the normal interval, indicating a global disharmonious appearance. Overall, in patients pronasale, subnasale, and pogonion were more posterior, the nose was shorter and larger, the face was narrower, and the soft tissue profile and upper lip were flatter than in the reference population. Conclusions The facial soft tissue structures of adult operated patients with CLP differed from those of normal controls of the same age, sex, and ethnic group. In this patient group, surgical corrections of CLP failed to provide a completely harmonious appearance, even if the deviations from the reference were limited. Further analyses of larger groups of patients are needed.

Abstract

Future high energy accelerators such as the Large Hadron Collider require accelerator magnets with the highest possible fields. For NbTi conductor magnets, this means operating at superfluid helium temperatures in the range of 1.8-1.9 K. As part of Fermilab's superconducting magnet R&D program, we have built a facility to test magnets in a vertical dewar of superfluid liquid helium. The dewar is designed for magnets up to 4 m length and 620 mm diameter, with a temperature range of 1.8 K to 4.4 K and 1 atmosphere helium. The power system consists of 10 kA and 8.8 kA power supplies operating in parallel, with a bus work and an extraction circuit that can accommodate up a 18 kA excitation current. A description of the facility as well as operational experience from the first magnet tests are presented.

Abstract

Race and ethnicity influence the form of the human craniofacial complex in varying ways. The aim of the present investigation was to quantify the effects of ethnicity (mestizos, Aymara, non-Aymara), age (adolescents and adults), and sex on the form (size and shape) of the hard palate in normal Native American individuals. From the dental casts of 51 individuals with a complete permanent dentition, the x, y, and z coordinates of several standardized palatal landmarks were obtained with a computerized 3-dimensional digitizer. Palatal landmarks were used to derive a mathematical equation for palatal shape in the frontal and sagittal planes. Palatal width and length, frontal and sagittal heights, sagittal slope, and deviation of the raphe from the midline were also calculated. In the Aymara subjects, there was no effect of sex on palatal size, but there was an effect on palatal shape independent of size, especially with respect to male growth. Indeed, female palates apparently did not change their shape between adolescence and adulthood, while male palates increased their posterior "height." Overall, the 3 ethnic groups appeared to possess similar palatal size, with small significant differences. In the adult individuals, ethnicity did not seem to influence palatal shape. In contrast, adolescent males showed differences: non-Aymara subjects had the "highest" palatal shape, Aymara the "lowest," and mestizos an intermediate position. In conclusion, ethnicity does not seem to be a factor of major variability of human hard palate morphology, at least in the present 3 northern Chilean groups, as already found for dental arch shape. Age probably has a larger effect, particularly in the posterior part of the palate, where the eruption of the second and third molars between adolescence and young adulthood may play a role. A further development of the present investigation may involve larger samples of individuals from different ethnic groups.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate, retrospectively, the profile of patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma. They were referred to two hospitals of Belo Horizonte (MG, Brazil) between 1986 and 1996. The medical records of 740 patients presenting oral squamous cell carcinoma were reviewed in detail. The TNM classification and staging, age, gender, race, occupation, and site of the primary tumor were recorded. The male-to-female ratio was 4.8:1. The mean age was 58.6 years. Most of the patients were in their sixties and were farm workers. The tumors were found principally on the tongue. There was a close relationship between some habits (tobacco and alcohol consumption) and the development of oral squamous cell carcinoma. Most of the patients sought medical care in the first year, even though almost half of them had lesions in stage T4. The identification of the characteristics of this specific population might reflect either accomplishments or problems in oral cancer control and can enable the development of a primary prevention program for oral squamous cell carcinoma.

Abstract

Limits on anomalous $\mathrm{WW}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $\mathrm{WWZ}$ couplings are presented from a study of $WW/W\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{Z}e\ensuremath{\nu}\mathrm{jj}$ events produced in $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.8 \mathrm{TeV}.$ Results from the analysis of data collected using the D\O{} detector during the 1993--1995 Tevatron collider run at Fermilab are combined with those of an earlier study from the 1992--1993 run. A fit to the transverse momentum spectrum of the W boson yields direct limits on anomalous $\mathrm{WW}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $\mathrm{WWZ}$ couplings. With the assumption that the $\mathrm{WW}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ and $\mathrm{WWZ}$ couplings are equal, we obtain $\ensuremath{-}0.34l\ensuremath{\lambda}l0.36$ (with $\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\kappa}=0)$ and $\ensuremath{-}0.43l\ensuremath{\Delta}\ensuremath{\kappa}l0.59$ (with $\ensuremath{\lambda}=0)$ at the 95% confidence level for a form-factor scale $\ensuremath{\Lambda}=2.0 \mathrm{TeV}.$

231. Morphometry of the normal human ear: a cross-sectional study from adolescence to mid-adulthood

Abstract

The objective of this study was to supply information about: (1) normal gender-based dimensions of ears (linear distances and ratios, area); (2) left right symmetry; and (3) growth changes between adolescence and mid-adulthood. The three-dimensional co-ordinates of several soft-tissue landmarks on the ears and face were obtained by an electromagnetic digitizer in 40 male and 33 female adolescents aged 12-15 years. 73 young female and 89 young male adults aged 19-30 years, and 41 male and 38 female adults aged 31-56 years. From the landmarks, paired car width and length were calculated and averaged for age and gender, as well as the relevant ratios, ear areas and angles relative to the facial midline, and indices of left right symmetry. Comparisons were performed by factorial analysis of variance. All ear dimensions were significantly larger in men than in women (P0.005). A significant effect of age was found (P0.005), with larger values in older individuals. On average, the three-dimensional position of ears was symmetric, with symmetry coefficients ranging between 94 and 96%. Data collected in the present investigation could serve as a database for the quantitative description of human ear morphology during normal adolescent and adult growth.

Abstract

We report on measurements on inclusive cross sections times branching fractions into electrons for W and Z bosons produced in p (p) over bar collisions at root s = 1.8 TeV. From an integrated luminosity of 84.5 pb(-1) recorded in 1994-1995 using the D empty set detector at the Fermilab Tevatron, we determine sigma(p (p) over bar--> W + X) x B(W-->e nu) = 2310 +/- 10(stat) +/- 50(syst) +/- 100(lum)pb and sigma(p (p) over bar-->Z + X) x B(Z-->ee)=221+/-3(stat)+/-4(syst)+/-10(lum)pb. From these, we derive sigma(p (p) over bar-->W + X) x B(N-->e nu)/sigma(p (p) over bar-->Z + X) x B(Z-->ee) = 10.43+/-0.15(stat) +/- 0.20(syst) +/- 0.10(NLO), B(W-->e nu) = 0.1044+/-0.0015(stat)+/-0.0020(syst)+/-0.0017(theory)+/-0.0010(NLO). and Gamma(w) = 2169 +/- 0.03 l(stat) +/- 0.042(syst) +/- 0.041(theory)+/- 0.022(NLO)GeV. We use the latter to set a 95% confidence level upper limit on the partial decay width of the W boson into nonstandard model final states, Gamma(W)(inv), of 0.213 GeV. Combining these results with those from the 1992-1993 data gives sigma(p (p) over bar-->W+X) x B(W-->e nu)/sigma(p (p) over bar-->Z+X) x B(Z-->ee) = 10.51+/-0.25, Gamma(W) = 2.152 +/- 0.066 GeV, and a 95% C.L. upper limit an Gamma(W)(inv) of 0.191 GeV. Using a sample with a luminosity of 505 nb(-1) taken at root s = 630 GeV, we measure sigma(p (p) over bar--> W+ X) x B(W --> e nu) = 658 +/- 67 pb.

Abstract

We present a measurement of the differential cross section as a function of transverse momentum of the Z boson in ppbar collisions at sqrt{s}=1.8 TeV using data collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider during 1994--1996. We find good agreement between our data and the NNLO resummation prediction and extract values of the non-perturbative parameters for the resummed prediction from a fit to the differential cross section.

Abstract

Objectives To extend the assessment of the clinical significance of the measurement of the anteroposterior discrepancy between maxilla and mandible on the bisector of the palatal plane to mandibular plane angle to a large group of randomly selected patients of both sexes, and to verify the correlation of this measurement to well established angular and linear assessments of anteroposterior discrepancy. Design Retrospective analysis of pre-treatment lateral cephalometric radiographs. Setting and sample population The Laboratory of Functional Anatomy of the Stomatognathic Apparatus at Milan University, Italy. Three hundred and six orthodontic patients (165 males, 141 females) aged between 6 and 50 years. Experimental variable ANB angle; corrected ANB* angle which compensates for the position of the maxilla and rotation of the mandible relative to the cranial base; Wits appraisal; MM-Wits: linear distance between the projections of A and B points on the bisector of the palatal plane to mandibular plane angle. Results The MM-Wits distance was significantly correlated to two angles (ANB and ANB*), as well as to the Wits appraisal. All the correlations performed did not show sex- or age-characteristic patterns. The correlation to the corrected ANB* was the best among the three, with a correlation coefficient of 0.915, MM-Wits (mm) = 1.497 x ANB* (degrees) -6.784. From the correlation, reference values for the new measurement have also been estimated, and found to be between -0.65 and -6.85 mm for skeletal Class I individuals. Conclusion It is recommended that the diagnosis of orthodontic anomalies should be performed taking into consideration more than a single anteroposterior appraisal.

Abstract

Evidence of anomalous WW and WZ production was sought in pbar{p} collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. The final states $WW (WZ) to mu-nu-jet-jet + X, WZ to mu-nu-e-e + X and WZ to e-nu-e-e + X were studied using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of approximately 90 pb-1. No evidence of anomalous diboson production was found. Limits were set on anomalous WWgamma and WWZ couplings and were combined with our previous results. The combined 95% confidence level anomalous coupling limits for Lambda=2 TeV are -0.25 LE Delta-kappa LE 0.39 (lambda=0) and -0.18 LE lambda LE 0.19 (Delta \kappa = 0), assuming the WWgamma couplings are equal to the WWZ couplings.

Abstract

D\O{} has measured the inclusive production cross section of W and Z bosons in a sample of 13 ${\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ of data collected at the Fermilab Tevatron. The cross sections, multiplied by their leptonic branching fractions, for production in $p\overline{p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=1.8$ TeV are ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{W}\mathrm{B}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{W}e\ensuremath{\nu})=2.36\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.08\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.13\mathrm{}\mathrm{nb},$ ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{W}\mathrm{B}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{W}\ensuremath{\mu}\ensuremath{\nu})=2.09\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.06\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.22\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.11\mathrm{}\mathrm{nb},$ ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{Z}\mathrm{B}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{Z}{e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}})=0.218\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.008\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.008\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.012\mathrm{}\mathrm{nb}$, and ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{Z}\mathrm{B}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{Z}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}})=0.178\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.022\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.021\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.009\mathrm{}\mathrm{nb}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic; the third reflects the uncertainty in the integrated luminosity. For the combined electron and muon analyses, we find ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{W}\mathrm{B}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{W}l\ensuremath{\nu})/{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{Z}\mathrm{B}(\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{Z}{l}^{+}{l}^{\ensuremath{-}})=10.90\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.52$. Assuming standard model couplings, we use this result to determine the width of the W boson, and obtain $\ensuremath{\Gamma}(W)=2.044\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.097 \mathrm{GeV}$.

Abstract

We report on a search for bottom squarks produced in pbarp collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV using the D0 detector at Fermilab. Bottom squarks are assumed to be produced in pairs and to decay to the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) and a b quark with branching fraction of 100%. The LSP is assumed to be the lightest neutralino and stable. We set limits on the production cross section as a function of bottom squark mass and LSP mass.

Abstract

We present a search for charged Higgs bosons in decays of pair-produced top quarks using 109.2 +- 5.8 pb^-1 of data recorded from ppbar collisions at sqrt{s} = 1.8 TeV by the D0 detector during 1992-96 at the Fermilab Tevatron. No evidence is found for charged Higgs production, and most parts of the [m(H+),tan(beta)] parameter space where the decay t -> bH+ has a branching fraction close to or larger than that for t -> bW+ are excluded at 95% confidence level. Assuming m(t) = 175 GeV and sigma(ppbar -> ttbar) = 5.5 pb, for m(H+) = 60 GeV, we exclude tan(beta) < 0.97 and tan(beta) > 40.9., 11 pages, 3 figures, submitted to PRL

R&D high temperature superconductor (HTS) power leads were developed and built for Fermilab by American Superconductor Corporation and Intermagnetics General Corporation. Each company provided one pair of 5 kA HTS current leads, and these have been successfully tested at Fermilab. This paper summarizes the test results.

Abstract

Electric and magnetic fields produced by transmission systems have received strong interest both for biological effects and for interference with electrical and electronic devices, measuring sets, computers, control systems, etc. A deeper attention has been more recently devoted to magnetic fields which are difficult to screen and which can be significant when produced by transmission, but also by distribution and utilization systems. This paper proposes a simplified approach which seems to be useful in the case of lines set up by cables and, in particular, when more cables are connected in parallel, considering currents affected by significant harmonics content. Complete simulation results for several selected cases to analyze the electromagnetic field under quasi-stationary conditions in a multiconductor system are reported and discussed in detail, and the main results are summarized. It was found that the parallel connection of conductors can amplify or reduce magnetic field amplitude with respect to the single conductor case and that this effect depends on the harmonics order.

Abstract

A measurement of the mass of the W boson is presented which is based on a sample of 5982 W → eνv decays observed in pp collisions at √s=1.8 TeV with the D∅ detector during the 1992-1993 run. From a fit to the transverse mass spectrum, combined with measurements of the Z boson mass, the W boson mass is measured to be MW=80.350±0.140(stat)±0.165(syst)±0.160(scale) GeV/c 2 . Detailed discussions of the determination of the absolute energy scale, the measured efficiencies, and all systematic uncertainties are presented.

Abstract

We have searched for central production of a pair of photons with high transverse energies in $p\bar p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 1.8$ TeV using $70 pb^{-1}$ of data collected with the D\O detector at the Fermilab Tevatron in 1994--1996. If they exist, virtual heavy pointlike Dirac monopoles could rescatter pairs of nearly real photons into this final state via a box diagram. We observe no excess of events above background, and set lower 95% C.L. limits of $610, 870, or 1580 GeV/c^2$ on the mass of a spin 0, 1/2, or 1 Dirac monopole., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The gauge boson pair production processes Wg, WW, WZ, and Zg were studied using pbarp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of ~14 pb-1 at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV. Analysis of Wg prod with subsequent W boson decay to lv (l=e,mu) is reported, including a fit to the pT spectrum of the photons which leads to limits on anomalous WWg couplings. A search for WW prod with subsequent decay to l-lbar-v-vbar (l=e,mu) is presented leading to an upper limit on the WW prod cross section and limits on anomalous WWg and WWZ couplings. A search for high pT W bosons in WW and WZ prod is described, where one W boson decays to an ev and the second W boson or the Z boson decays to two jets. A maximum likelihood fit to the pT spectrum of W bosons resulted in limits on anomalous WWg and WWZ couplings. A combined fit to the three data sets which provided the tightest limits on anomalous WWg and WWZ couplings is also described. Limits on anomalous ZZg and Zgg couplings are presented from an analysis of the photon ET spectrum in Zg events in the decay channels (ee, mu-mu, and v-vbar) of the Z boson., 77 Pages including 40 Figures. Abstract

We report on a search for pair production of a fourth generation charge -1/3 quark (b') in pbar p collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV at the Fermilab Tevatron using an integrated luminosity of 93 pb^-1. Both quarks are assumed to decay via flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC). The search uses the signatures gamma + 3 jets + mu-tag and 2 gamma + 2 jets. We see no significant excess of events over the expected background. We place an upper limit on the production cross section times branching fraction that is well below theoretical expectations for a b' quark decaying exclusively via FCNC for b' quark masses up to m(Z) + m(b)., Eleven pages, two postscript figures, submitted to Physical Review Letters

Abstract

Mandibular movements near the maximum intercuspal position were analysed for the location of the mean instantaneous centre of curvature of the interincisal point path. Measurements were performed using a kinesiograph in 28 healthy young adults with sound dentitions and free from temporomandibular joint disorders. The subjects performed habitual open-close cycles at different speeds; opening movements starting from the centric relation occlusion were also analysed. In none of the 28 subjects was the interincisal point path derived from pure rotation movements performed around the intercondylar axis, not even in the first millimetres of motion. Translation and rotation were always combined, and the position of the centre of curvature changed during the motion, showing different characteristics in the open and close movements; these patterns were also dependent upon motion speed. The results show that the hinge axis theory cannot explain the mandibular movements because a pure rotation did not occur around the intercondylar axis.

Abstract

This study reports the first measurement of the azimuthal decorrelation between jets with pseudorapidity separation up to five units. The data were accumulated using the D{\O}detector during the 1992--1993 collider run of the Fermilab Tevatron at $\sqrt{s}=$ 1.8 TeV. These results are compared to next--to--leading order (NLO) QCD predictions and to two leading--log approximations (LLA) where the leading--log terms are resummed to all orders in $\alpha_{\scriptscriptstyle S}$. The final state jets as predicted by NLO QCD show less azimuthal decorrelation than the data. The parton showering LLA Monte Carlo {\small HERWIG} describes the data well; an analytical LLA prediction based on BFKL resummation shows more decorrelation than the data., Comment: 6 pages with 4 figures, all uuencoded and gzipped

Abstract

We present results on the search for the top quark in {ital p{bar p}} collisions at {radical}{ital s} =1.8 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 13.5{plus_minus}1.6 pb{sup {minus}1}. We have considered {ital t{bar t}} production in the standard model using electron and muon dilepton decay channels ({ital t{bar t}}{r_arrow}{ital e}{mu}+jets, {ital ee}+jets, and {mu}{mu}+jets) and single-lepton decay channels ({ital t{bar t}}{r_arrow}{ital e}+jets and {mu}+jets) with and without tagging of {ital b} quark jets. An analysis of these data optimized for top quark masses below 140 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2} gives a lower top quark mass limit of 128 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2}. An analysis optimized for higher top quark masses yields 9 events with an expected background of 3.8{plus_minus}0.9. If we assume that the excess is due to {ital t{bar t}} production, and assuming a top quark mass of 180 GeV/{ital c}{sup 2}, we obtain a cross section of 8.2{plus_minus}5.1 pb.

Abstract

A new television technique that proved to be faster than conventional photographic analysis has been developed and applied to the evaluation of the head and body natural standing posture in 303 healthy children, ages 6 to 11, and in 186 healthy young adults. In the lateral plane all subjects had extended head (soft tissue Frankfurt plane), with parallel Camper's and occlusal planes. The neck was halfway between the horizontal and vertical planes. Most angles significantly correlated with each other. The occlusal and neck angles showed a significant effect of age, being larger in children than in adults. In children the neck was more flexed, and the occlusal plane was more inclined downward. The results were in accord with previous photographic evaluations showing that the applied method was reliable and could be usefully employed in postural investigations. The results also confirmed that in healthy subjects, regardless of age, the soft tissue Frankfurt plane is extended, not horizontal.
