Nitric oxide (NO) is involved in a variety of biological functions including blood vessel dilation and neurotransmitter release. In animals, NO has been demonstrated to affect multiple behavioral outcomes, such as memory performance and arousal, whereas this link is less explored in humans. NO is created in the paranasal sinuses and studies show that humming releases paranasal NO to the nasal tract and that NO can then cross the blood brain barrier. Akin to animal models, we hypothesized that this NO may traverse into the brain and positively affect information processing. In contrast to our hypothesis, an articulatory suppression memory paradigm and a speeded detection task found deleterious effects of humming while performing the task. Likewise, we found no effect of humming on emotional processing of photos. In a fourth experiment, participants hummed before each trial in a speeded detection task, but we again found no effect on response time. In conclusion, either nasal NO does not travel to the brain, or NO in the brain does not have the expected impact on cognitive performance and emotional processing in humans. It remains possible that NO influences other cognitive processes not tested for here.

Background and aims: The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) is a widely used instrument for assessing cognitive function in stroke survivors. To interpret changes in MoCA scores accurately, it is crucial to consider the minimal detectable change (MDC) and minimal clinically important difference (MCID). The aim was to establish the MDC and MCID of the MoCA within 6 months after stroke. Methods: This cohort study analysed data from the EFFECTS trial. The MoCA was administered at baseline and at 6-month follow-up. The MDC was calculated as the upper limit of the 95 % confidence interval of the standard error of the MoCA mean. The MCID was determined using anchor-based and distribution methods. The visual analogue recovery scale of the Stroke Impact Scale (SIS [primary anchor]) and Euro Quality of Life-5 Dimensions index (EQ-5D [confirmatory anchor]) were used as anchors. The distribution-based method, the Cohen benchmark effect size was chosen. Results: In total, 1131 (mean age [SD], 71 [10.6] years) participants were included. The mean (SD) MoCA scores at admission and 6-month follow-up were 22 (5.2) and 25 (4.2), respectively. The MDC of the MoCA was 5.1 points. The anchor method yielded the MCIDs 2 and 1.6 points for SIS and EQ-5D, respectively. Using the distribution method, the MCID for the MoCA was 1 point. Conclusions: Even a small change in MoCA scores can be important for stroke survivors; however, larger differences are required to ensure that any difference in MoCA values is a true change and is not related to the inherent variation in the test. Due to small sample sizes, the results of the anchor analysis need to be interpreted with caution.

BackgroundMore than a year after recovering from COVID-19, a large proportion of individuals, many of whom work in the healthcare sector, still report olfactory dysfunctions. However, olfactory dysfunction was common already before the COVID-19 pandemic, making it necessary to also consider the existing baseline prevalence of olfactory dysfunction. To establish the adjusted prevalence of COVID-19 related olfactory dysfunction, we assessed smell function in healthcare workers who had contracted COVID-19 during the first wave of the pandemic using psychophysical testing.MethodsParticipants were continuously tested for SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies since the beginning of the pandemic. To assess the baseline rate of olfactory dysfunction in the population and to control for the possibility of skewed recruitment of individuals with prior olfactory dysfunction, consistent SARS-CoV-2 IgG naïve individuals were tested as a control group.ResultsFifteen months after contracting COVID-19, 37% of healthcare workers demonstrated a quantitative reduction in their sense of smell, compared to only 20% of the individuals in the control group. Fifty-one percent of COVID-19-recovered individuals reported qualitative symptoms, compared to only 5% in the control group. In a follow-up study 2.6 years after COVID-19 diagnosis, 24% of all tested recovered individuals still experienced parosmia.ConclusionsIn summary, 65% of healthcare workers experienced parosmia/hyposmia 15 months after contracting COVID-19. When compared to a control group, the prevalence of olfactory dysfunction in the population increased by 41 percentage points. Parosmia symptoms were still lingering two-and-a half years later in 24% of SARS-CoV-2 infected individuals. Given the amount of time between infection and testing, it is possible that the olfactory problems may not be fully reversible in a plurality of individuals.

Introduction: Reduced cerebral blood flow has been associated with cognitive decline and incident dementia, with oxidative stress and reduced beta-amyloid clearance as possible mechanisms for neurodegeneration. Transcranial doppler sonography is a non-invasive tool for measuring cerebrovascular hemodynamics, including mean cerebral blood flow velocity. A systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to study mean cerebral blood flow velocity in the middle cerebral artery in persons with mild cognitive impairment and dementia compared to cognitively normal elderly. Methods: We searched Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Epistemonikos, PsychINFO, and CINAHL according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. In total, 33439 titles and abstracts were screened, 86 articles were reviewed in full text, and 35 were included. Results: Mean cerebral blood flow velocity in the middle cerebral artery was significantly lower in Alzheimer's disease (mean difference = 8.42; 95% confidence interval, -10.56 to -6.28), vascular dementia (mean difference = 11.75; 95% confidence interval, -14.68 to -8.82) and mild cognitive impairment (mean difference = 4.19; 95% confidence interval, -5.52 to -2.85) compared to cognitively normal elderly, see figures 1 – 3. Reduction in blood flow was equally pronounced in Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia (mean difference = 2.79; 95% confidence interval, -0.78 to 6.35). Discussion: Cerebral blood flow velocity is reduced in Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia and MCI, with more pronounced disturbances in dementia.

Abstract Background Gaming is a popular past‐time activity among children and adolescents, but it there is also a possible link to negative consequences such as psychological distress and lowered academic achievement. However, there are fundamental knowledge gaps remaining regarding central characteristics of gaming such as heritability, stability over time, and sex differences. We examined the genetic and environmental contribution to gaming behavior, including sex differences, continuity and change, in a longitudinal cohort of twins. Methods This is the first longitudinal twin study on gaming, involving 32,006 twins in Sweden. Parents were asked about the twins' gaming at ages 9, 15 and 18. We used univariate and multivariate twin analyses to estimate the relative contribution of genetic and environmental influences at each time‐point as well as across time. Sex‐differences were also explored. Results The results showed large sex differences, where genetics explained more of the variance for boys (31.3%–62.5% depending on age) than for girls (19.4%–23.4%). Genetic factors explained an increasing amount of the variance for boys (31.3% at age 9, 62.5% at age 15 and 53.9% at age 18). Shared environmental factors explained a larger proportion of the variance among girls, which remained relatively stable over time (70.5% at age 9, 61.8% at age 15 and 60.5% at age 18). The results also indicated that most of the variance came from genetic and environmental sources specific to each age. Conclusions Compared to many other behavioral phenotypes, such as gambling, gaming was relatively unstable with a large degree of genetic innovation. There were large sex differences in the contribution of genetic and environmental factors. This suggests that excessive gaming could be the result of age‐ and sex‐specific genetic and environmental factors, and should be taken into account when mapping gaming behaviors, since these behaviors might be under continual etiological transformation.

In a preregistered, cross-sectional study, we investigated whether olfactory loss is a reliable predictor of COVID-19 using a crowdsourced questionnaire in 23 languages to assess symptoms in individuals self-reporting recent respiratory illness. We quantified changes in chemosensory abilities during the course of the respiratory illness using 0-100 visual analog scales (VAS) for participants reporting a positive (C19+; n = 4148) or negative (C19-; n = 546) COVID-19 laboratory test outcome. Logistic regression models identified univariate and multivariate predictors of COVID-19 status and post-COVID-19 olfactory recovery. Both C19+ and C19- groups exhibited smell loss, but it was significantly larger in C19+ participants (mean ± SD, C19+: -82.5 ± 27.2 points; C19-: -59.8 ± 37.7). Smell loss during illness was the best predictor of COVID-19 in both univariate and multivariate models (ROC AUC = 0.72). Additional variables provide negligible model improvement. VAS ratings of smell loss were more predictive than binary chemosensory yes/no-questions or other cardinal symptoms (e.g., fever). Olfactory recovery within 40 days of respiratory symptom onset was reported for ~50% of participants and was best predicted by time since respiratory symptom onset. We find that quantified smell loss is the best predictor of COVID-19 amongst those with symptoms of respiratory illness. To aid clinicians and contact tracers in identifying individuals with a high likelihood of having COVID-19, we propose a novel 0-10 scale to screen for recent olfactory loss, the ODoR-19. We find that numeric ratings ≤2 indicate high odds of symptomatic COVID-19 (4 < OR < 10). Once independently validated, this tool could be deployed when viral lab tests are impractical or unavailable.

Recent anecdotal and scientific reports have provided evidence of a link between COVID-19 and chemosensory impairments, such as anosmia. However, these reports have downplayed or failed to distinguish potential effects on taste, ignored chemesthesis, and generally lacked quantitative measurements. Here, we report the development, implementation, and initial results of a multilingual, international questionnaire to assess self-reported quantity and quality of perception in 3 distinct chemosensory modalities (smell, taste, and chemesthesis) before and during COVID-19. In the first 11 days after questionnaire launch, 4039 participants (2913 women, 1118 men, and 8 others, aged 19-79) reported a COVID-19 diagnosis either via laboratory tests or clinical assessment. Importantly, smell, taste, and chemesthetic function were each significantly reduced compared to their status before the disease. Difference scores (maximum possible change ±100) revealed a mean reduction of smell (-79.7 ± 28.7, mean ± standard deviation), taste (-69.0 ± 32.6), and chemesthetic (-37.3 ± 36.2) function during COVID-19. Qualitative changes in olfactory ability (parosmia and phantosmia) were relatively rare and correlated with smell loss. Importantly, perceived nasal obstruction did not account for smell loss. Furthermore, chemosensory impairments were similar between participants in the laboratory test and clinical assessment groups. These results show that COVID-19-associated chemosensory impairment is not limited to smell but also affects taste and chemesthesis. The multimodal impact of COVID-19 and the lack of perceived nasal obstruction suggest that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus strain 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection may disrupt sensory-neural mechanisms.

Abstract Background Chronic infection with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) is common in people with former or current injection drug use. Among the patients in the opioid substitution treatment (OST) program in Gothenburg, Sweden, more than 50% had been infected with HCV. However, many patients did not have any follow-up for their infection and the linkage to treatment could be improved. Methods A model of care for HCV was introduced at an OST unit in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 2017. The aim was to increase testing and linkage to HCV treatment. A nurse and a medical doctor, both specialized in infectious diseases, performed on-site testing at the OST unit with transient liver elastography (Fibroscan) to evaluate the fibrosis stage and initiated HCV treatment. This study retrospectively reviewed the patients’ medical records to assess information regarding participation in the model of care, hepatitis C status, linkage to treatment and treatment outcome. Results Among the 225 patients enrolled in OST at baseline, 181 were still in the OST program at the end of study (December 31st, 2018). In total, 29 patients, most of whom did not attend the Clinic of Infectious Diseases, were referred to the model of care. By the end of study, 17 patients (100% of those treated) reached sustained virologic response. In parallel, an additional 19 patients got treatment directly at the Clinic of Infectious Diseases. Conclusion Integrating HCV screening and examination in an OST unit successfully linked patients to treatment. However, not all patients received treatment. To reach the goal of eliminating HCV, different models of care are needed.

The numbers of publications within the field of research on approaches to address conflicts in schools is rapidly growing, and it is now important to map influential theories, methods and topics that shape this research field. In addition, student teachers, teachers and teacher educators would benefit from it being easier to find research-based knowledge of how to address conflicts in schools. Therefore, a bibliometric study was carried out on 1126 publications that were published between 1996 and 2019 in this field. The study aimed at examining publication activity, geographic spread, and dominant research topics. The findings showed a positive trend in publication output from 2006 onwards. Research output was found to be dominated by the United States. However, the results also indicated an internationalization trend expressed in an increased geographic spread of publication output. Furthermore, six research topics were identified through cluster analyses and labelled 'peace and value education', 'classroom management from coercive discipline to relationship building', 'constructive conflict resolution', 'classroom management programmes', 'restorative justices and restorative approaches', and 'classroom challenges for teachers'. Within each research topic, a distinct number of publications were found that defined the core research.

Previous research shows a discrepancy between different teachers' assessment of student theses. This might be an even larger problem in the context of teacher education, since teacher trainers originate from different disciplines. This study aims to investigate how different assessors prioritise between criteria for assessment. Criteria were elucidated using repertory grid interviews with teacher trainers. These criteria formed the basis for a web-based Qsort that was distributed to teacher trainers at three different universities. The 66 teacher trainers in this study represented different disciplines, but were all engaged in the supervision and examination of student theses from teacher education programmes. The analysis revealed three different factors, which have been labelled: "logic text structure as product," "research process as product" and "results as product." The differences may not be explained by the background (e.g. discipline, university or gender) of the teacher trainers. Together, these three factors explain why teachers assessing student theses may accentuate different personal criteria. Hence, this might impact on their grading practice and also the interrater reliability.

This article introduces the method of "podcast ethnography." The method encompasses three general stages: to "explore" a podcast from a particular social field, to "engage" with it through careful, ethnographic reflexivity and to "examine" the podcast by developing typologies and themes expedient for analysis. Podcast ethnography is beneficial due to its spatial and temporal flexibility; observing a podcast universe can be performed on the move and in parallel with other tasks. This advantage enables a much-needed breathing space for researchers inquiring vehement milieus, such as white radical nationalism. The article uses an example from this precise milieu in Sweden -- the podcast "Motgift" [Antidote] -- to illustrate and flesh out the potentials and challenges of applying the method's three stages. In so doing, the article argues for inclusion of podcast ethnography into the extended family of ethnographic methods.

Gender equality constitutes a central aspect of sustainable development. Education is commonly viewed as crucial for achieving both sustainable development and gender equality, and many argue that fostering action competence is a key element in such educational efforts. This article directs attention to the ways in which textbook content about sustainable development and gender equality may support and/or hinder the promotion of action competence. We analyze content about gender equality and sustainable development in Swedish lower secondary school textbooks in biology, civics, and home and consumer economics. We find that sustainable development and gender equality are organized as separate, rather than integrated, topics in textbooks. The analysis also shows that the social dimension, in particular, and multidimensionality, in general, of sustainable development are poorly described. Content about gender equality is furthermore marked by anthropocentric perspectives and weak historical contextualization. All of these traits, we argue, hinder rather than support how textbooks may promote action competence.

Abstract Background The knowledge of how the separate Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) subdimensions (impulsivity, hyperactivity, and inattention) are associated with nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicidal behavior (SB) is limited. The objective of this study was to investigate the associations of childhood ADHD subdimensions with NSSI and SB in children at risk of neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs; including ADHD). Methods The sample (N = 391) included twin pairs where at least one twin screened positive for at least one NDD or common comorbidity at age 9 or 12. Data on ADHD subdimensions was collected through a telephone interview with a caregiver/legal guardian at age 9 or 12, and data on NSSI and SB was collected through an in-person clinical assessment at age 15. The associations between the ADHD subdimensions and NSSI or SB were tested in three different models: (1) univariable, (2) together with the other ADHD subdimensions, and (3) in a confounder-adjusted model including other NDD symptoms in addition to ADHD subdimensions, for NSSI and SB separately. Results A total of 32 (8.2%) adolescents reported life-time engagement of NSSI, and 18 (4.6%) SB. Childhood impulsivity was associated with SB and childhood inattention with NSSI, in all models. Hyperactivity was not meaningfully associated with any of the outcomes. Conclusion Impulsivity and inattention, but not hyperactivity, may be of particular importance in understanding SB and NSSI. Brief screening for impulsivity and inattention in childhood could facilitate detection of children vulnerable to NSSI and SB and indicate valuable information for preventive and intervention strategies.
