This is the second of three volumes that will eventually comprise the fourth edition of the landmark'Adventurers of Purse and Person.'Individuals identified in the work must have been resident in Virginia during the period 1607-1624/25 or members of the Virginia Company of London in order to be designated'adventurers,'and it is their descendants alone who qualify for membership in one of the most distinguished hereditary societies in America, the Order of First Families of Virginia.'Adventurers of Purse and Person'is their story, a collection of genealogies of all adventurers with proven descents into the sixth generation.

Published in the obscure'Journal of the Irish House of Commons'in 1743 as a report of a special committee appointed to look into abuses of the system of enforced emigration, these lists of about 2,000 felons and vagabonds forcibly transported from Ireland between 1735 and 1743 constitute one of the few known sources of Irish emigration to the New World in the 18th century. Copied verbatim from the pages of the'Journal'by Frances McDonnell, these priceless lists have been brought to light for the benefit of the long-suffering researcher. As published here in this handy, indexed volume, information in the lists generally includes the name of transportee, county or city from which returns of transportation orders were obtained, date of assizes (court), reason for transportation, and occasionally the name of the ship and place of destination in the colonies. Clearly this is an historically important work and a unique source of information, and it belongs in every serious researcher's library.

This is a compilation of all marriages recorded from 1634 to 1777 in church records and other documents that are on deposit at the Maryland Historical Society in Baltimore or the Hall of Records in Annapolis. The marriage records were extracted from parish records, ministers'returns of licenses, and printed sources, including the Maryland Historical Magazine and the Archives of Maryland, and refer to some 24,000 persons. All marriages are arranged alphabetically by the name of the groom, following which are the date of marriage and the bride's name.

Between 1913 and 1916, William Richard Cutter published four separate series entitled'New England Families, Genealogical and Memorial.'The First Series, published in 1913, featured genealogical and biographical essays on nearly 1,000 New England families. Using a rich collection of contemporary sources, this study focuses on one group of English immigrants sent to Upper Canada from Sussex and other southern counties with the aid of parishes and landlords. In Part One, Wendy Cameron follows the work of the Petworth Emigration Committee over six years and trace how the immigrants were received in each of these years. In Part Two, Mary McDougall Maude presents a complete list of emigrants on Petworth ships from 1832 to 1837, including details of their background, family reconstructions, and additional information drawn from Canadian sources. Paternalism strong enough to slow the wheels of change is embodied here in Thomas Sockett, the organizer of the Petworth emigrations, and his patron, the Earl of Egremont, and in Lieutenant Governor Sir John Colborne in Upper Canada. The friction created as these men sought to sustain older values in the relationship between rich and poor highlights the shift in British emigration policy. In these years of transition immigrants sent by the Petworth Emigration Committee could accept assistance and the government direction that went with it, or they could rely on their own resources and find work for themselves. Once the transition was complete, the market-driven model took over and immigrants had to make their own best bargain for their labour.

Collected from published, archival, and private sources, these letters place the Petworth immigrants in the context of their times and challenge the image of English immigrants to 1830s Upper Canada as officers and gentlewomen. Wendy Cameron, Sheila Haines, and Mary McDougall Maude have carefully annotated the letters to sketch the stories of individual writers, link letters by the same author or members of the same family, and explore the connections between writers. What eventually happened to some of the writers is also revealed in this engaging collection. English Immigrant Voices provides a valuable insight into the rural poor and their experiences in emigrating to a new land.

This publication contains the records of Revolutionary service of 1,394 soldiers and patriots who were buried in Indiana. The roster is arranged alphabetically, and after the soldier's full name appears his place of residence, date and place of birth, record of service (with reference made to the source), and if pensioned, the number of the claim, date and place of death, name of wife or wives, date of marriage, names of children, their dates of birth, and so on. In addition, the roster contains a list of 54'Revolutionary Soldiers Who Were Pensioned in Indiana and Later Transferred to Other States'and a'List of Indiana Pensioners in Other Wars,'identifying 78 soldiers of the War of 1812 and the Indian Wars, and showing the name of the Indiana county where they were pensioned.
