Climate change is a reality and efficient use of scarce resources is vital. The challenge of this project is to study the behaviour of humidity in the soil by mathematical/statistical modeling in order to find optimal solutions to improve the efficiency of daily water use in irrigation systems. For that, it is necessary to estimate and forecast weather variables, in this particular case daily maximum and minimum air temperature. These time series present strong trend and high-frequency seasonality. This way, we perform a state space modeling framework using exponential smoothing by incorporating Box-Cox transformations, ARMA residuals, Trend and Seasonality., This research was partially financed by Portuguese funds by the Center for Research and Development in Mathematics and Applications (CIDMA) and the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (”Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia” - FCT), within project UID/MAT/04106 2019. - Abstract
This paper aims to contribute to an ethnomusicological approach to the RTP Song Contest (1964-2014). It is the longest-running Portuguese television contest and has witnessed crucial moments of Portuguese and European histories. Thus, it is important to understand its role in music composition and the representation of identities both in national and international contexts. The Encyclopedia of Music in 20th Century Portugal (2010) is the first Portuguese ethnomusicological work concerning this contest, an important contribution to launch the debate on it. So, it was my starting point considering that there is little Portuguese research concerning the role of music in television and about the RTP Song Contest in particular. It is my intention to contribute to the understanding of this musical and television phenomenon throughout fifty years. This paper is a work in progress –my Ph.D.research in Ethnomusicology, FCSH-NOVA, Lisboa – funded by FCT. Here I discuss potential approaches to the subject, regarding international scholars’ contributions and a few national research findings., O presente artigo pretende contribuir para a abordagem etnomusicológica ao Festival RTP da Canção (1964 2014).

ABSTRACT: Villa as matrices of territoriality, had their origin in Islamic culture and italian renaissance models. In their location besides the Manor House, they consisted of a strong presence of gardens, orchards, leisure and play areas, with the predominance of water providing a central bridge between man, nature and landscape. But over time and due to changes in paradigms of social development, these farmas and manor houses became incompatible with the contemporany city development leading to a neglect and abandonment or, in some cases, to adaptation to new uses. Forgotten by time, Quinta da Torre d’Aguilha located in São Domingos de Rana is one of these cases. It was a Villa, wich, after defining a way of life in aristocratic and almost feudal times, and demonstrating a strong sovereingty and impact on the local territory and landscape, was abandoned and left in a state of ruin. Through the conection between past, present and future, the project here presented, starts with research and analysis at the birth of this concept as well as describing rhe relantionship between man and landscape. Subsquently, topics will be discussed regarding to the state of their degradation and future projections as part of na adaptation to new funtionalities. The intoduction of a new centrality in the suburbian area will be presented and defined through studies related to the city and its growth, as well as issues of comercial urbanismo that meet the project objectives and in the expectation of making Torre d’Aguilha an attractive and experiential space. The project seeks to combine both aspects. One Villa with a new centrality, through a program of new uses turning the villa into a centrality through a program of new uses and thus in a pole of cultural and commercial interaction. N/A

This paper is a case study and aims to study the tourism market segment of Solo Travel, to understand its main characteristics, practices and travel destinations, and how it could be a segment of interest for the Portuguese National market. The mainly purpose for Solo Travel is known different places and have a unique adventure, so the Azores archipelago possesses a plethora of characteristics that are capable of pleasing lovers of this tourism modality. Therefore, the main focus of this work is to demonstrate, through a case study, how the Solo Travel segment can be a bet for the Azores archipelago, exploring the motivations and some benchmarking providing information that can be applied in the field. To achieve the main objectives, namely if the Solo Travel segment is an investment to consider for the Azores, was conducted a literature review and also a comparative analysis between the potential of the Azores and other destinations, which are generally appreciated by Solo Traveller. One of the main conclusions is that the Solo Travel is growing fast, a segment that with the globalization and mass tourism may originate even more participants, being a solitary way of travelling and not looking for an area that is already much explored. The Azores has the natural, social, and cultural resources and the authenticity that the Solo Travellers seek. It is a destination little explored by tourism with numerous areas untouched by human activity, where visitors can experience a contact with nature in its purest state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

QUALITATIVE research ,HOSPITALITY ,KNOWLEDGE management ,POLICY sciences - Abstract
In the last years, the number of publications about hospitality and absorptive capacity – defined as the ability to recognize and apply new external knowledge (Cohen & Levinthal, 1990) – considerably increased. According to these publications, the main outputs of absorptive capacity and hospitality are, respectively, organization improvements in terms of innovation (Zhara & George, 2002) and service differentiation (Kunwar, 2017). The relation between absorptive capacity and hospitality lays in the fact that organizations can optimize the use of new external knowledge, related to hospitality, to respond in a more efficient way to the customers’ needs. Despite the relevance of both aspects to companies of different sectors, such as tourism, there are still gaps in terms of quantitative and qualitative analysis that contemplate simultaneously both absorptive capacity and hospitality literatures. In order to fulfill part of the mentioned gap, this study’s purpose was to elaborate a quantitative and qualitative analysis about this literature, more specifically: i) to verify the alignment between traditional absorptive capacity literature and publications that contemplate simultaneously both themes - absorptive capacity and hospitality; ii) to quantify its sources (authors and journals); iii) to highlight the future research questions suggested in these publications. To achieve this goal, all the management publications indexed in Web of Science that have as topics “absorptive capacity” and “hospitality” were analyzed by using VOSviewer, HistCite and Nvivo. Based on the main results, we have confirmed: the presence of some traditional absorptive capacity aspects in this literature and also the emergence of new aspects; the necessity to develop more studies that contemplate new theoretical ideas and models as well as multi-level measurements, quantitative methods and longitudinal techniques. A better understanding of these aspects can contribute to future studies and can also be interesting to policy makers and managers, especially, in a context of industry 4.0. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AA receives a grant from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) [ grant number PD/BD/105822/2014]. The Portuguese Mental Health Study was carried out by the Department of Mental Health, NOVA Medical School, NOVA University of Lisbon, with collaboration of the CESOP-Portuguese Catholic University and was funded by the Champalimaud Foundation, the Gulbenkian Foundation, the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and the Ministry of Health. The Portuguese Mental Health Study was carried out in conjunction with the World Health Organization WMH Survey Initiative which is supported by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH; R01MH070884), the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Pfizer Foundation, the U.S. Public Health Service (R13-MH066849, R01-MH069864 and R01 DA016558), the Fogarty International Center (FIRCA R03-TW006481), the Pan American Health Organization, Eli Lilly and Company, Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, GlaxoSmithKline and Bristol-Myers Squibb. Background: Mental disorders are a major cause of disability with impacts on daily functioning and quality of life, which has been associated with socioeconomic disadvantage. The present study aims to assess how socioeconomic position is related to the disability reported by people with mental disorders, using data from the World Mental Health Survey (WMHS) Initiative Portugal. Methods: Using data from the Portuguese Mental Health Survey, a nationally representative cross-sectional study (n = 3849), several logistic regression models with interaction terms were performed to evaluate the effect of different indicators of socioeconomic position on the disability reported by people with any mental disorder (any 12-month mood or anxiety disorder). Odds ratios were estimated at the specific values of the main effects and interaction terms between the presence of any mental disorder and education, employment status, self-perceived financial deprivation and subjective social status. Results: The prevalence rate of any mood or anxiety disorder was 21.0% (n = 788), among which 14.7% (n = 115) reported disability. The results show that among people with any 12-month mental disorder, those in the employment category of “retired or others” had two times higher odds of reporting disability (OR = 2.19; 95%CI: 1.06-4.48) when compared to participants categorized as “working”. Likewise, individuals with financial deprivation had two times higher odds of reporting disability when compared to those non-financially deprived (OR = 2.36; 95%CI: 1.31-4.24). The odds ratios obtained for the specific years of education evaluated were not statistically significant but seem to suggest an educational gradient. Conclusions: The findings of this study indicate that the disability reported by people with mental disorders varies according to socioeconomic position and draw attention to the need to develop policies to address these inequalities. publishersversion published

Tobacco use ,Pregnancy ,Women health ,Migrant women - Abstract
Tobacco use is a major modifiable risk factor of adverse maternal and fetal health outcomes. Being a migrant has been associated with lower risk of smoking during pregnancy. However, it remains a matter of debate whether such association could be explained by other socio-demographic characteristics or whether such effect remains or increases according to the length of stay in the host country. This study examined the differences in maternal smoking prevalence between native, long-term and recent migrant women in Portugal. METHODS: This study was derived from baMBINO, a national project grounded on 32 public maternity units in mainland Portugal aiming to investigate the differences in perinatal healthcare and outcomes among migrant and native women. Recruitment took place during admission for delivery, inviting both native and foreign-born women. Participants included in this analysis (n=1107) were classified according to their country of birth and length of stay in Portugal into: native (Portuguese-born), recent migrant (foreign-born women who spent 10 years or less in Portugal), and long-term migrants (foreign-born women who spent more than 10 years in Portugal). Logistic regression model was fitted to estimate the association between the aforementioned migration statuses and having or not smoked tobacco during pregnancy, taking into account women’s age, parity, marital status, level of education, family income, country of origin of women’s parents and gestational age at the first prenatal care visit. Adjusted odds-ratio (OR) and respective 95% confidence interval (95%CI) were obtained. RESULTS: A little over half of the study participants were foreign-born and almost 60% of those were recent migrants. Tobacco smoking during pregnancy was evidently more prevalent among native women than among long-term or recent migrant women (14% vs. 8% and 4% respectively; p

- Abstract
IntroductionWe explored whether routine pregnancy self-testing is feasible and acceptable to women at risk of late recognition of pregnancy as a strategy to facilitate early entry into either antenatal or abortion care.MethodsA feasibility study among South African sexually active women not desiring pregnancy within 1 year, and not using long-acting or injectable contraceptives. At recruitment, we provided five free urine pregnancy tests for self-testing on the first day of each of the next 3 months. We sent monthly text reminders to use the tests with requests for no-cost text replies. Our main outcome was the proportion of participants self-testing within 5 days of the text reminder over three consecutive months. Other outcomes were ease of use of tests, preference for self-testing versus clinic testing, acceptability of routine self-testing (all binary responses followed by open response options) and response to text messages (four-point Likert scale).ResultsWe followed up 71/76 (93%) participants. Two confirmed new pregnancies at the first scheduled test and completed exit interviews, and 64/69 (93%) self-reported completing all three monthly tests. Self-testing was easy to do (66/71, 93%); advantages were convenience (21/71, 30%) and privacy (18/71, 25%), while the main disadvantage was no nurse present to advise (17/71, 24%). Most would recommend monthly testing (70/71, 99%). Text reminders were generally not bothersome (57/71, 80%); 35/69 (51%) participants replied with test results over all three months.ConclusionProviding free pregnancy tests to women at risk of late recognition of pregnancy is feasible to strengthen early confirmation of pregnancy status.

- Abstract
To study Lidia cow reproductive apparatus traits, a total of 90 organs were collected after slaughtering the cows from different Bos taurus breeds: (i) Lidia cattle breed - Brava dos Açores population (n=10) and Domecq lineage (n=11); (ii) Holstein Friesian females – 10-14-month-old heifers (n=15); 15-20-month-old heifers (n=10), 21-19-month-old heifers (n=18), and (iii) cows ≥ 30 months (n=26). The length and width were measured for five portions of the female reproductive apparatus (vulva and vagina, cervix, uterine body, uterine horns and ovaries). One-way ANOVA was performed with Tukey test. The level recognized to assume differences was p<0.05 to less. Differences were not shown between Lidia groups. In general, the Lidia cow reproductive apparatus was small in size that that of the matured cows in terms of all traits, with the exception of cervix rings (5.10 ± 0.17 rings) with p≤0.01 for all the groups (averages ranged from 3.33 ± 0.11 rings to 3.50 ± 0.15 rings). The vulva and vagina (L= 27.31 ± 0.53 cm; W=2.07 ± 0.14 cm), the uterine body width (3.01 ± 0.18 cm) and the uterine horns (L= 12.24 ± 0.32; W= 1.13 ± 0.10) showed were smaller in size than those of the evaluated heifers from HF breed that ranged in age from 10 to 14 months (p≤0.01). This study was the first to perform a morphometric characterization on the Lidia cow reproductive apparatus, and the results provide useful information for understanding reproductive approaches to be used with this breed.

- Abstract
Background: Improving the shape and contour of the nasal tip is a major goal in rhinoplasty. Extreme bulbosity and parenthesis deformity of the nasal tip are both frequently encountered. However, the underlying anatomical features that cause this kind of tip deformity are still not fully understood. Objectives: To evaluate the relation between the shape of the nasal tip and the anatomical position, orientation and shape of the lateral crura of the lower lateral cartilages and to estimate the incidence of cephalic malposition of lateral crura in Caucasian noses. Materials and Methods: Nineteen Caucasian cadaver noses were studied, and the alar cartilages were measured and evaluated using a standardized method. Results: Fourteen of the total 38 lateral crura evaluated had cephalic malposition (long axis angle with the midline equal to or less than 30°). Of the nasal tips classified as having parenthesis deformity, 84.6% had cephalic malposition of lateral crura and 46.2% had convex lateral crura. Vertical orientation of the short axis of the lateral crura was no more common in noses with parenthesis deformity of the nasal tip than in other kinds of nasal tip. Conclusions: The incidence of cephalic malposition of the lateral crura in this series of Caucasian noses was 36.8%. There was a statistically significant association between parenthesis deformity of the nasal tip and cephalic malposition of the lateral crura, as well as with convex shape of the lateral crura. No statistically significant association was found between the sagittal angle of the lateral crura and the type of nasal tip. UID/EAT/00472/2013 SFRH/BD/103718/2014 Held by Portuguese Public Television Broadcast – RTP – since 1964, RTP Song Contest (RTPSC) has been a promoter for composition and an important platform for mediation of discourses on music, identity, and politics. Being the longest-running music and television show in Portugal, RTPSC has been annually organized to choose the Portuguese entry at Eurovision Song Contest, representing the country for millions of viewers. Considering the small dimension of Portuguese music industry, authors and singers recognize on RTP Song Contest a platform to improve their careers at national level, an opportunity to boost the national market rather than an international chance. Encompassing the most important moments of Portuguese history from dictatorship to democracy, passing through European integration, RTPSC witnessed, reflected and also influenced social and political changes and anxieties. Observing the social network created over this Contest, it is possible to map out different postures on social, artistic, and aesthetic issues and as well as stances about the role of music in television as identity and memory shaper and mediator. RTPSC is simultaneously time suspension, since it lays on national narratives and memories, and it is time change since it accompanied external influences. My research work analyzes the RTPSC’s role on music creation and mediation in Portugal during fifty years, observing its relation with music industry. To do this, I analyze the postures of several actors about music as a vehicle for diverse perspectives, tracing social networks lied on various ideologies that shaped music creation and the contest itself. publishersversion published

Background: Evidence-based health workforce policies are essential to ensure the provision of high-quality health services and to support the attainment of universal health coverage (UHC). This paper describes the main characteristics of available health workforce data for 74 of the 75 countries identified under the 'Countdown to 2015' initiative as accounting for more than 95% of the world's maternal, newborn and child deaths. It also discusses best practices in the development of health workforce metrics post-2015. Methods: Using available health workforce data from the Global Health Workforce Statistics database from the Global Health Observatory, we generated descriptive statistics to explore the current status, recent trends in the number of skilled health professionals (SHPs: physicians, nurses, midwives) per 10 000 population, and future requirements to achieve adequate levels of health care in the 74 countries. A rapid literature review was conducted to obtain an overview of the types of methods and the types of data sources used in human resources for health (HRH) studies. Results: There are large intercountry and interregional differences in the density of SHPs to progress towards UHC in Countdown countries: a median of 10.2 per 10 000 population with range 1.6 to 142 per 10 000. Substantial efforts have been made in some countries to increase the availability of SHPs as shown by a positive average exponential growth rate (AEGR) in SHPs in 51% of Countdown countries for which there are data. Many of these countries will require large investments to achieve levels of workforce availability commensurate with UHC and the health-related sustainable development goals (SDGs). The availability, quality and comparability of global health workforce metrics remain limited. Most published workforce studies are descriptive, but more sophisticated needs-based workforce planning methods are being developed. Conclusions: There is a need for high-quality, comprehensive, interoperable sources of HRH data to support all policies towards UHC and the health-related SDGs. The recent WHO-led initiative of supporting countries in the development of National Health Workforce Accounts is a very promising move towards purposive health workforce metrics post-2015. Such data will allow more countries to apply the latest methods for health workforce planning. publishersversion published

Career expectations ,Tourism and hospitality ,Gender ,Higher education students - Abstract
The recent growth in Portuguese tourism has been reflected by the increase in the hospitality and tourist industry, emphasizing the importance of competent professional training in this sector. The high rotation rates of personnel in this sector has been acknowledged in previous studies. Several authors have questioned whether students applying for tourism related degrees recognize the characteristics of a career in this sector. Previous studies concluded that there were barriers to gender equality. In general, men received higher wages and held higher hierarchical positions compared to women. In contrast, women were typically higher academic achievers than men. Women were also distinguished as being more concerned with social and environmental issues, while men were more entrepreneurial with a greater interest in starting their own business. This study aimed to understand undergraduate students’ expectations regarding the hospitality industry, analyzing the relative differences between gender. A survey questionnaire was conducted on students of a Portuguese higher education institution with 1st-cycle degrees related to hospitality and tourism (n=329). According to the majority of career expectations considered, there were no differences between male and female students. However, gender differences were apparent with respect to “mobility – finding job anywhere” and the ambition to “become a supervisor/manager/director”, with men revealing higher levels compared to women. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

When we come across a subject of study that combines sound and image – the music in a television show – but all recordings are irretrievably lost, we would think that our research work could be jeopardized. When we realize that press can help us to reconstruct lost that uplift us. Press can help us to restore which was hidden by television broadcast and lost in time, supporting our knowledge about these television objects. This paper wants to demonstrate the significance of press reconstructing musical memories in Portugal at late-1960s and early-1970s, namely the role of the magazines Flama, Rádio e Televisão, Nova Antena and Plateia, and the daily newspapers Diário de Lisboa, Diário Popular, A Capital and O Século. The first example is focused on the articles about the talk-show Zip-Zip, broadcast by public television (RTP) between May and December of 1969, whose recordings are permanently lost. Press articles allowed us to rebuild the show’ schedules and its music. Press is also fundamental to analyze the values about the role of music in the television and about the role of music in the society. In the second example I analyze how press followed the 1975 edition of the RTP Song Contest – one of the major television shows held annually to choose the Portuguese entry at Eurovision Song Contest. In both cases, press allowed us to recreate visual and musical memories, and enabled us to understand distinctive values about music in Portuguese society. publishersversion published
