Food and beverage industry is one of the major contributors to the growth of all economies. In European Union, it constitutes the largest manufacturing sector in terms of turnover, value added, and employment. However, the sector has been associated with various environmental issues including high levels of water consumption and wastewater production. In the present work, an overview regarding the production process, the water usage and the wastewater generation, and treatment of representative manufacturing industries from selected sectors of the food and beverage industry, is presented. The industries under investigation are: slaughterhouses, potato processing, olive oil production, cheese production, and beer manufacturing. As expected, between those different sectors, water consumption and wastewater generation vary greatly. Wastewater pollution load depends on the type of product being processed, the process and the equipment used, while the common characteristic is the strong organic content. In this view, the predominant treatment methods found in the recent literature are biological. This fact is reflected to the wastewater treatment technology employed which, in most of the cases, is biological with special attention to the application of the anaerobic digestion process. The aim of this study is to assess the impacts of climate change on the water resources of Cyprus with special emphasis on water availability and to evaluate the capacity of the resource itself, as well as of the government and people in Cyprus to adapt to climate change. The methodology followed includes the recording of the baseline situation and the assessment of climate change impacts and vulnerabilities. For the assessment, climate projections produced by regional climate models were used. The climate change factors, which are considered to affect the water resources in Cyprus, refer to the increase in temperature, the decrease in precipitation as well as the increase in droughts and in heavy rainfall. For the impact assessment, the changes in river and groundwater flows as well as other WSIs were studied. For the adaptation assessment, the degree of freshwater and non-freshwater resources exploitation and the measures for water demand reduction and the enhancement of drought preparedness were examined. At first, priorities with regard to climate change vulnerability, the water availability for domestic water supply and irrigation in mountain areas and the water availability for irrigation in plain and coastal areas were identified, while water availability for domestic water supply was estimated to present limited vulnerability to climate change. This paper presents the results of the analysis of the relation between waste management and economic situation for the years 2000-2013 in Romania, Bulgaria, Slovenia and Greece. In particular, the interest of the present study focuses on the "decoupling principle" which falls within the EU policies. The population growth, the gross domestic product and the municipal solid waste generation constitute the basic indicators used. These indicators are integrated into one, the municipal waste intension (MWT) indicator, allowing for easy comparison between the countries and simplifying data analysis. In general terms, it can be stated that there is a decoupling of waste generation and economic growth in all countries as well as in EU-27 on average. Greece seems to follow the EU-27 average, Slovenia, Romania and Bulgaria show similar patterns with Bulgaria to show a sharper and larger decrease of the MWI indicator. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified associations with robust statistical support for influencing breast cancer susceptibility. Most GWAS and replications have been conducted in Northern European populations and to a lesser extent in Asians, and Ashkenazi Jews. It is important to evaluate whether these variants confer risk across different populations and also to assess the magnitude of risk conferred. The aim of this study was to evaluate previously GWAS-identified breast cancer risk variants in the Cypriot population. Eleven GWAS-discovered single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were analyzed for association with breast cancer in 1,109 Cypriot female breast cancer patients and 1,177 healthy female controls. Four of the 11 SNPs evaluated were found to be nominally significantly associated ( P < 0.05) with breast cancer risk in the Cypriot population. Based on estimated power, five associations would be expected to be nominally significant. The correlation coefficient of effect sizes (per-allele odds ratio) between the Cypriot population and the original GWAS populations where these SNPs had been discovered was 0.58 ( P = 0.064), while allele frequencies were very similar ( r = 0.88, P < 0.001). Overall, we show modest concordance for breast cancer GWAS-discovered alleles and their effect sizes in the Cypriot population. Waste from Electric and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) constitute one of the most complicated solid waste streams, in terms of its composition, and, as a result, it is difficult to be effectively managed. In addition, there is a lack of an organized mechanism for the official recording of its quantities in the European Union. Thus, the available quantitative data derive from certain evaluation projects and estimation models. This paper analyses the current waste management practices in Cyprus as a case study and presents the estimated quantities of WEEE. All this data is considered valuable and can be used as a basis for making the most suitable recommendations, in order to deal with the problem effectively and promote sustainable waste management solutions, such as its reuse and recycling. Inability to correctly repair DNA damage is known to play a role in the development of breast cancer. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of DNA repair genes have been identified, which modify the DNA repair capacity, which in turn may affect the risk of developing breast cancer. To assess whether alterations in DNA repair genes contribute to breast cancer, we genotyped 62 SNPs in 29 genes in 1,109 Cypriot women with breast cancer and 1,177 age-matched healthy controls. Five SNPs were associated with breast cancer. SNPs rs13312840 and rs769416 in the NBS1 gene were associated with a decrease in breast cancer risk (OR TT vs. TC/CC = 0.58; 95% CI, 0.37–0.92; P = 0.019 and OR GG vs. GT/TT = 0.23, 95% CI 0.06–0.85, P = 0.017, respectively). The variant allele of MRE11A rs556477 was also associated with a reduced risk of developing the disease (OR AA vs. AG/GG = 0.76; 95% CI, 0.64–0.91; P = 0.0022). MUS81 rs545500 and PBOV1 rs6927706 SNPs were associated with an increased risk of developing breast cancer (OR GG vs. GC/CC = 1.21, 95% CI, 1.02–1.45; P = 0.031; OR AA vs. AG/GG = 1.53, 95% CI, 1.07–2.18; P = 0.019, respectively). Finally, haplotype-based tests identified significant associations between specific haplotypes in MRE11A and NBS1 genes and breast cancer risk. Fanconi anemia (FA) is a rare disorder characterized by multiple congenital malformations, progressive bone marrow failure and susceptibility to malignancies. Biallelic mutations in the breast cancer 2, early onset (BRCA2) gene are responsible for the FA-D1 subgroup, which accounts for ~3% of all the FA cases. Patients with biallelic BRCA2 mutations generally display a more severe phenotype, with earlier onset and increased incidence of leukaemia and other solid tumors, than other patients with FA. In the present report, the first Cypriot patient with FA-D1 is described, which is the fifth case of a homozygote for the same null allele reported thus far, and the third known case of neuroblastoma in association with FA-D1. The DNA repair pathway is known to play a role in the etiology of breast cancer. A number of studies have demonstrated that common germline variants in genes involved in the DNA repair pathway influence breast cancer risk. To assess whether alterations in DNA repair genes contribute to breast cancer, we genotyped 12 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 1,109 Cypriot women with breast cancer and 1,177 age-matched healthy controls. We found significant associations with breast cancer for SNPs in the BRCA2 and MRE11A genes. Carriers of the BRCA2 rs1799944 variant (991 Asp) were found to have an increased risk of breast cancer (OR = 1.41, 95% CI 1.08–1.83, P = 0.01) with Ptrend = 0.0076. Homozygous carriers of the MRE11A rs601341 A allele had an increased risk of breast cancer (OR = 1.36, 95% CI 1.08–1.71, P = 0.009) with Ptrend = 0.0087. The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic has hit its second year and continues to damage lives and livelihoods across the globe. There continues to be a global effort to present serological data on SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in different individuals. As such, this study aimed to characterize the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in the Cypriot population for the first time since the pandemic started. Our results show that a majority of people infected with SARS-CoV-2 developed IgG antibodies against the virus, whether anti-NP, anti-S1RBD, or both, at least 20 days after their infection. Additionally, the percentage of people with at least one antibody against SARS-CoV-2 in the group of volunteers deemed SARS-CoV-2 negative via RT-PCR or who remain untested/undetermined (14.43%) is comparable to other reported percentages worldwide, ranging anywhere from 0.2% to 24%. We postulate that these percentages reflect the underreporting of true infections in the population, and also show the steady increase of herd immunity. Additionally, we showed a significantly marked decrease in anti-NP IgG antibodies in contrast to relatively stable levels of anti-S1RBD IgG antibodies in previously infected individuals across time. In the present study ion exchange of Pb2+, Cu2+, Fe3+, and Cr3+ on natural Greek clinoptilolite was examined in terms of selectivity toward the above heavy metals in single- and multicomponent solutions in batch systems. Also examined are the influence of clinoptilolite on solution acidity and the effect of acidity on the ion exchange process. Clinoptilolite increases solution acidity due to the exchange of H+ cations with the cations initially present in its structure. H+ cations should be considered as competitive ones in ion exchange processes, and consequently ion exchange of metals is favored at high acidity values. Cu2+ and Cr3+ are the most sensitive cations with respect to acidity. Selectivity determination demonstrates that the selectivity at total concentration 0.01 N and acidity 2 in both single- and multicomponent solutions is following the order Pb2+>Fe3+>Cr3+&ges;Cu2+. This order is set since the first days of equilibration. However, Cu2+ shows remarkable changes in selectivity and generally its uptake and selectivity are increasing with time. On the other hand selectivity in single metal solutions where acidity is not adjusted is following the order Pb2+>Cr3+>Fe3+≅Cu2+. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

This virtual special issue published in Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews contains 25 high-quality selected extended papers presented at the HERAKLION 2019 7th International Conference on Sustainable Solid Waste Management held in Heraklion, Crete in Greece from 26th to June 29, 2019. The articles published in this special issue focus on recent developments in sustainable waste-to-energy systems and waste management practices and highlight the critical challenges and potential solutions. The editorial paper aims to give a brief overview of the key findings and future perspectives proposed in these 25 selected papers. It is worth noting that although the articles presented in this special issue covered a wider range of topics, they are categorized into five categories. These include the latest developments in 1) waste-to-energy technologies, 2) biofuels and bioenergy, 3) waste valorization, 4) emerging renewable and sustainable energy systems, and finally, 5) biorefineries and circular economy. • Twenty five high quality peer-reviewed papers were selected from HERAKLION 2019 Conference. • The mian theme of sustainable waste-to-energy systems catogorised into five topics. • It will support advancement of waste-to-energy technologies and circular economy. Simple Summary: Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed type of cancer in women worldwide. Stratification of women based on their individual breast cancer risk could guide targeted preventative strategies and population screening. Integrated models that combine the effects of a polygenic risk score (PRS) with classical breast cancer risk factors could provide an individualized breast-cancer risk estimation. Although various studies have extensively evaluated the performance of such integrated models in populations of European ancestry, no previous studies have included individuals of Greek-Cypriot origin. To this end, we have assessed the predictive performance of a 15-SNP PRS (PRS15), in combination with classical breast-cancer risk factors, in women of Greek-Cypriot origin. This proof-of-concept study suggests that models combining genetic data with classical risk factors may be used in the future for the prediction of breast-cancer risk and, therefore, supports their potential clinical utility for targeted preventative strategies in Cypriot women. The PRS combines multiplicatively the effects of common low-risk single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and has the potential to be used for the estimation of an individual's risk for a trait or disease. PRS has been successfully implemented for the prediction of breast cancer risk. The combination of PRS with classical breast cancer risk factors provides a more comprehensive risk estimation and could, thus, improve risk stratification and personalized preventative strategies. In this study, we assessed the predictive performance of the combined effect of PRS15 with classical breast-cancer risk factors in Cypriot women using 1109 cases and 1177 controls from the MASTOS study. The PRS15 was significantly associated with an increased breast cancer risk in Cypriot women OR (95% CI) 1.66 (1.25–2.19). The integrated risk model obtained an AUC (95% CI) 0.70 (0.67–0.72) and had the ability to stratify women according to their disease status at the extreme deciles. These results provide evidence that the combination of PRS with classical risk factors may be used in the future for the stratification of Cypriot women based on their disease risk, and support its potential clinical utility for targeted preventative actions and population screening. Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder, and literature suggests that genetics and lifestyle/environmental factors may play a key role in the triggering of the disease. This study aimed to evaluate the predictive performance of a 12-Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) polygenic risk score (PRS) in combination with already established PD-environmental/lifestyle factors. Methods: Genotypic and lifestyle/environmental data on 235 PD-patients and 464 controls were obtained from a previous study carried out in the Cypriot population. A PRS was calculated for each individual. Univariate logistic-regression analysis was used to assess the association of PRS and each risk factor with PD-status. Stepwise-regression analysis was used to select the best predictive model for PD combining genetic and lifestyle/environmental factors. Results: The 12-SNPs PRS was significantly increased in PD-cases compared to controls. Furthermore, univariate analyses showed that age, head injury, family history, depression, and Body Mass Index (BMI) were significantly associated with PD-status. Stepwise-regression suggested that a model which includes PRS and seven other independent lifestyle/environmental factors is the most predictive of PD in our population. Conclusions: These results suggest an association between both genetic and environmental factors and PD, and highlight the potential for the use of PRS in combination with the classical risk factors for risk prediction of PD.
