Abstract

Objective Ventricular septal defect (VSD) is the most common type of cardiovascular developmental anomaly and is an important risk factor for the substantially increased morbidity and mortality in newborns. Cumulative evidence implicates genetic defects in the pathogenesis of congenital VSD. However, VSD is genetically heterogeneous and the genetic determinants for VSD in most patients remain to be identified. Methods In this study, the whole coding region of the GATA4 gene, which encodes a zinc-finger transcription factor pivotal to cardiogenesis, was initially sequenced in 210 unrelated patients with VSD. The relatives of the index patient carrying the identified mutation and 200 unrelated ethnically matched healthy individuals used as controls were subsequently genotyped. The functional effect of the mutant GATA4 was characterised in contrast to its wild-type counterpart using a luciferase reporter assay system. Results A novel heterozygous GATA4 mutation, p.G296R, was identified in a family with VSD inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. Absent in 200 control individuals, the mutation co-segregated with VSD in the family with 100% penetrance and. was completely conserved evolutionarily across species. Functional analysis displayed that the p.G296R mutation of GATA4 was associated with a decreased transcriptional activity. Conclusion The findings expand the spectrum of mutations in GATA4 linked to VSD and provide more insight into the molecular mechanism involved in VSD. The results of the present study imply the potential implications in the genetic diagnosis and gene-specific therapy of this common malformation in infancy.

Abstract

Organic Metal microcavities were fabricated by using full- reflectivity metal film and semi-transparent metal film as cavity mirrors. Compared with the conventional organic microcavity, the typical structure of which is Glass/DBR/organic layers/metal mirror, a short cavity-length microcavity can be obtained by using metal mirrors. Red, green and blue emission of the microcavities were realized under photoexcitation due to the change of the thickness of the Alq 3 layer. The measured microcavity emission spectra were shown to be roughly in agreement with the theoretical calculation spectra using the characteristic matrix method. The results implied that organic metal microcavity has some advantages in realizing the pure single mode RGB emission.

Abstract

The single layer of organic optical microcavity with 1D distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) was fabricated. The PL emission properties of the microcavity were explored at the two sides, which show different characteristics due to the asymmetric structure. The PL emission peak of Alq film is at 5113 nm with a half width of 78nm. Compared with the Alq film, the emission of microcavity from the top DBR side shows a narrow peak at 494nm with a half width of 4.6nm and an enhanced factor of 11, and 606nm with a half width of 6.6nm.

Abstract

The photoluminescent properties of an optical microcavity formed by a single layer of PPV film sandwiched between a quarter-wavelength distributed Bragg reflector and a metal Ag reflector was studied. The significant microcavity effect was observed. (1) The PL emission spectrum of PPV film is a wide band spectrum with two peaks at 510 nm and 550 nm, respectively. The PL emission spectrum of the microcavity shows 2 peaks, which is at 564 nm and 599 nm, respectively. The FWHM of the narrowed emission spectrum is 7 nm. The PL emission intensity of the microcavity at the resonant mode of 564 nm is enhanced by 19 times. (2) It was found that the peak of the microcavity is blue-shifted with the decreasing of emission intensity obviously when the detection angle is increased. We consider that this is a novel phenomenon and worth investigating further.

235. Bifunctional MoO3–WO3/Ag/MoO3–WO3Films for Efficient ITO–Free Electrochromic Devices

Abstract

Dielectric–metal–dielectric (DMD) trilayer films, served as both electrochromic (EC) film and transparent conductor (TC), have exhibited great potential application in low–cost, ITO–free electrochromic devices (ECDs). However, recent reports on the DMD–based ECDs revealed that the response time and the optical modulation properties were not very satisfactory. Here, the mixed MoO3–WO3materials were first introduced as the dielectric layer to construct an EC–TC bifunctional MoO3–WO3/Ag/MoO3–WO3(MWAMW) film, which demonstrates strong and broad–band optical modulation in the visible light region, fast color-switching time (2.7 s for coloration and 4.1 s for bleaching), along with high coloration efficiency (70 cm2C–1). The electrical structure and electrochemical reaction kinetics analysis revealed that the improved EC performances are associated with the increased electron intervalence transition together with the fast charge–transfer and ion–diffusion dynamics.
