The sequential process of conceptualization and instantiation is essential to generalizable commonsense reasoning as it allows the application of existing knowledge to unfamiliar scenarios. However, existing works tend to undervalue the step of instantiation and heavily rely on pre-built concept taxonomies and human annotations to collect both types of knowledge, resulting in a lack of instantiated knowledge to complete reasoning, high cost, and limited scalability. To tackle these challenges, we introduce CANDLE, a distillation framework that iteratively performs contextualized conceptualization and instantiation over commonsense knowledge bases by instructing large language models to generate both types of knowledge with critic filtering. By applying CANDLE to ATOMIC, we construct a comprehensive knowledge base comprising six million conceptualizations and instantiated commonsense knowledge triples. Both types of knowledge are firmly rooted in the original ATOMIC dataset, and intrinsic evaluations demonstrate their exceptional quality and diversity. Empirical results indicate that distilling CANDLE on student models provides benefits across four downstream tasks. Symmetry engineering is explicitly effective to manipulate and even create phases and orderings in strongly correlated materials. Flexural stress is universally practical to break the space-inversion or time-reversal symmetry. Here, by introducing strain gradient in a centrosymmetric antiferromagnet Sr2IrO4, the space-inversion symmetry is broken accompanying a non-equivalent O p-Ir d orbital hybridization along z axis. Thus, emergent polar phase and out-of-plane magnetic moment have been simultaneously observed in these asymmetric Sr2IrO4 thin films, which both are absent in its ground state. Furthermore, upon the application of magnetic field, such polarization can be controlled by modifying the occupied d orbitals through spin-orbit interaction, giving rise to a flexomagnetoelectric effect. This work provides a general strategy to artificially design multiple symmetries and ferroic orderings in strongly correlated systems.

We consider the one-dimensional shallow water problem with capillary surfaces and moving contact {lines}. An energy-based model is derived from the two-dimensional water wave equations, where we explicitly discuss the case of a stationary force balance at a moving contact line and highlight necessary changes to consider dynamic contact angles. The moving contact line becomes our free boundary at the level of shallow water equations, and the depth of the shallow water degenerates near the free boundary, which causes singularities for the derivatives and degeneracy for the viscosity. This is similar to the physical vacuum of compressible flows in the literature. The equilibrium, the global stability of the equilibrium, and the local well-posedness theory are established in this paper.

In this paper, we consider the composite optimization problem, where the objective function integrates a continuously differentiable loss function with a nonsmooth regularization term. Moreover, only the function values for the differentiable part of the objective function are available. To efficiently solve this composite optimization problem, we propose a preconditioned zeroth-order proximal gradient method in which the gradients and preconditioners are estimated by finite-difference schemes based on the function values at the same trial points. We establish the global convergence and worst-case complexity for our proposed method. Numerical experiments exhibit the superiority of our developed method.

The rapid development of open-source large language models (LLMs) has been truly remarkable. However, the scaling law described in previous literature presents varying conclusions, which casts a dark cloud over scaling LLMs. We delve into the study of scaling laws and present our distinctive findings that facilitate scaling of large scale models in two commonly used open-source configurations, 7B and 67B. Guided by the scaling laws, we introduce DeepSeek LLM, a project dedicated to advancing open-source language models with a long-term perspective. To support the pre-training phase, we have developed a dataset that currently consists of 2 trillion tokens and is continuously expanding. We further conduct supervised fine-tuning (SFT) and Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) on DeepSeek LLM Base models, resulting in the creation of DeepSeek Chat models. Our evaluation results demonstrate that DeepSeek LLM 67B surpasses LLaMA-2 70B on various benchmarks, particularly in the domains of code, mathematics, and reasoning. Furthermore, open-ended evaluations reveal that DeepSeek LLM 67B Chat exhibits superior performance compared to GPT-3.5.

"Changing-look" active galactic nuclei (CL-AGNs) challenge our basic ideas about the physics of accretion flows and circumnuclear gas around supermassive black holes. Using first-year Sloan Digital Sky Survey V (SDSS-V) repeated spectroscopy of nearly 29,000 previously known AGNs, combined with dedicated follow-up spectroscopy, and publicly available optical light curves, we have identified 116 CL-AGNs where (at least) one broad emission line has essentially (dis-)appeared, as well as 88 other extremely variable systems. Our CL-AGN sample, with 107 newly identified cases, is the largest reported to date, and includes $\sim0.4\%$ of the AGNs reobserved in first-year SDSS-V operations. Among our CL-AGNs, 67% exhibit dimming while 33% exhibit brightening. Our sample probes extreme AGN spectral variability on months to decades timescales, including some cases of recurring transitions on surprisingly short timescales ($\lesssim 2$ months in the rest frame). We find that CL events are preferentially found in lower-Eddington-ratio ($f_{Edd}$) systems: Our CL-AGNs have a $f_{Edd}$ distribution that significantly differs from that of a carefully constructed, redshift- and luminosity-matched control sample (Anderson-Darling test yielding $p_{\rm AD}\approx 6\times10^{-5}$; median $f_{Edd}\approx0.025$ vs. $0.043$). This preference for low $f_{Edd}$ strengthens previous findings of higher CL-AGN incidence at lower $f_{Edd}$, found in smaller samples. Finally, we show that the broad MgII emission line in our CL-AGN sample tends to vary significantly less than the broad H$\beta$ emission line. We propose WSAC (Weighted Safe Actor-Critic), a novel algorithm for Safe Offline Reinforcement Learning (RL) under functional approximation, which can robustly optimize policies to improve upon an arbitrary reference policy with limited data coverage. WSAC is designed as a two-player Stackelberg game to optimize a refined objective function. The actor optimizes the policy against two adversarially trained value critics with small importance-weighted Bellman errors, which focus on scenarios where the actor's performance is inferior to the reference policy. In theory, we demonstrate that when the actor employs a no-regret optimization oracle, WSAC achieves a number of guarantees: (i) For the first time in the safe offline RL setting, we establish that WSAC can produce a policy that outperforms any reference policy while maintaining the same level of safety, which is critical to designing a safe algorithm for offline RL. (ii) WSAC achieves the optimal statistical convergence rate of $1/\sqrt{N}$ to the reference policy, where $N$ is the size of the offline dataset. (iii) We theoretically show that WSAC guarantees a safe policy improvement across a broad range of hyperparameters that control the degree of pessimism, indicating its practical robustness. Additionally, we offer a practical version of WSAC and compare it with existing state-of-the-art safe offline RL algorithms in several continuous control environments. WSAC outperforms all baselines across a range of tasks, supporting the theoretical results.

In this paper, we investigate the boundary layer arising from the fast internal waves in the Boussinesq equations with the Brunt-Vais\"al\"a frequency of order $ \mathcal O(1/\varepsilon) $. For the homogeneous-in-height stratification, previous work by \emph{Desjardins, Lannes, Saut, 3(1):153--192, Water Waves, 2021} establishes uniform-in-$\epsilon$ estimates locally in time, with additional constraints on the boundary data initially, which essentially restricts the dynamics in the spatially periodic domain. Removing such constraints, our goal is to investigate the general near-boundary behavior. We observe that the fast internal waves will give rise to large growth of the spatial derivatives in the normal direction of the solutions in the vicinity of the boundary. To capture this phenomenon, we introduce an inviscid boundary layer using a natural scaling. In addition, we investigate the well-posedness of such a boundary layer system in the space of analytic functions.

Abductive reasoning is the process of making educated guesses to provide explanations for observations. Although many applications require the use of knowledge for explanations, the utilization of abductive reasoning in conjunction with structured knowledge, such as a knowledge graph, remains largely unexplored. To fill this gap, this paper introduces the task of complex logical hypothesis generation, as an initial step towards abductive logical reasoning with KG. In this task, we aim to generate a complex logical hypothesis so that it can explain a set of observations. We find that the supervised trained generative model can generate logical hypotheses that are structurally closer to the reference hypothesis. However, when generalized to unseen observations, this training objective does not guarantee better hypothesis generation. To address this, we introduce the Reinforcement Learning from Knowledge Graph (RLF-KG) method, which minimizes differences between observations and conclusions drawn from generated hypotheses according to the KG. Experiments show that, with RLF-KG's assistance, the generated hypotheses provide better explanations, and achieve state-of-the-art results on three widely used KGs., Comment: Accepted by ACL 2024

The goal of session-based recommendation in E-commerce is to predict the next item that an anonymous user will purchase based on the browsing and purchase history. However, constructing global or local transition graphs to supplement session data can lead to noisy correlations and user intent vanishing. In this work, we propose the Frequent Attribute Pattern Augmented Transformer (FAPAT) that characterizes user intents by building attribute transition graphs and matching attribute patterns. Specifically, the frequent and compact attribute patterns are served as memory to augment session representations, followed by a gate and a transformer block to fuse the whole session information. Through extensive experiments on two public benchmarks and 100 million industrial data in three domains, we demonstrate that FAPAT consistently outperforms state-of-the-art methods by an average of 4.5% across various evaluation metrics (Hits, NDCG, MRR). This paper studies safe Reinforcement Learning (safe RL) with linear function approximation and under hard instantaneous constraints where unsafe actions must be avoided at each step. Existing studies have considered safe RL with hard instantaneous constraints, but their approaches rely on several key assumptions: $(i)$ the RL agent knows a safe action set for {\it every} state or knows a {\it safe graph} in which all the state-action-state triples are safe, and $(ii)$ the constraint/cost functions are {\it linear}. In this paper, we consider safe RL with instantaneous hard constraints without assumption $(i)$ and generalize $(ii)$ to Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Space (RKHS). Our proposed algorithm, LSVI-AE, achieves $\tilde{\cO}(\sqrt{d^3H^4K})$ regret and $\tilde{\cO}(H \sqrt{dK})$ hard constraint violation when the cost function is linear and $\cO(H\gamma_K \sqrt{K})$ hard constraint violation when the cost function belongs to RKHS. Here $K$ is the learning horizon, $H$ is the length of each episode, and $\gamma_K$ is the information gain w.r.t the kernel used to approximate cost functions. Our results achieve the optimal dependency on the learning horizon $K$, matching the lower bound we provide in this paper and demonstrating the efficiency of LSVI-AE. Notably, the design of our approach encourages aggressive policy exploration, providing a unique perspective on safe RL with general cost functions and no prior knowledge of safe actions, which may be of independent interest.

Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) are widely acknowledged to be susceptible to adversarial examples, wherein imperceptible perturbations are added to clean examples through diverse input transformation attacks. However, these methods originally designed for non-targeted attacks exhibit low success rates in targeted attacks. Recent targeted adversarial attacks mainly pay attention to gradient optimization, attempting to find the suitable perturbation direction. However, few of them are dedicated to input transformation.In this work, we observe a positive correlation between the logit/probability of the target class and diverse input transformation methods in targeted attacks. To this end, we propose a novel targeted adversarial attack called AutoAugment Input Transformation (AAIT). Instead of relying on hand-made strategies, AAIT searches for the optimal transformation policy from a transformation space comprising various operations. Then, AAIT crafts adversarial examples using the found optimal transformation policy to boost the adversarial transferability in targeted attacks. Extensive experiments conducted on CIFAR-10 and ImageNet-Compatible datasets demonstrate that the proposed AAIT surpasses other transfer-based targeted attacks significantly., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

In computational optics, numerical modeling of diffraction between arbitrary planes offers unparalleled flexibility. However, existing methods suffer from the trade-off between computational accuracy and efficiency. To resolve this dilemma, we present a novel approach that rigorously and efficiently models wave propagation between two arbitrary planes. This is achieved by rearranging the angular spectrum of the source field, coupled with linear algebraic computations. Notably, our method achieves comparable computational efficiency to the control method for both scalar and vectorial diffraction modeling, while eliminating nearly all numerical errors. Furthermore, we selectively merge the angular spectrum to further enhance the efficiency at the expense of precision in a controlled manner. Thereafter, the time consumption is reduced to at most 3% of that before merging.

We investigate the chemical potential effects of the equation of state and the chiral transition in an Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-scalar system, which is obtained from an improved soft-wall AdS/QCD model coupled with an Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system. The equations of state obtained from the model are in quantitative agreement with the lattice results at both zero and nonzero chemical potentials. The sensible chiral transition behaviors can be realized in the model. The QCD phase diagram with a CEP has also been obtained from the model.

We report on investigations of the complex magnetostructural and spin-state transitions in the breathing pyrochlore LiFeCr$_{4}$O$_{8}$ by means of magnetization, M\"ossbauer spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Three transitions corresponding to the ferrimagnetic transition at $T_N\sim94$ K, the spin-gap transition at $T_{SG}\sim50$ K, and the magnetostructural transition at $T_{MS}\sim19$ K were observed from the $\chi$(T) curve, whereas only $T_N$ and $T_{MS}$ were evidenced for the Fe site from our M\"ossbauer measurements, suggesting that the spin-gap transition is absent at the Fe site. This indicates that the spin-gap transition is an effect of the breathing Cr$_4$ lattice, in agreement with our DFT calculations from which we see nearly decoupled electronic states for the FeO$_4$ and CrO$_6$ units. From the temperature dependence of the hyperfine magnetic field we also observed a spin-state transition for the Fe spins at $T_{MS}$ consistent with earlier neutron diffraction measurements. These local characteristics are believed to be important for a complete understanding of the complex magnetostructural coupling effects observed in similar systems., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures
