SUMMARY: Ear length (EL) is a key trait that greatly contributes to yield in maize. Although dozens of EL quantitative trait loci have been mapped, very few causal genes have been cloned, and the molecular mechanisms remain largely unknown. Our previous study showed that YIGE1 is involved in sugar and auxin pathways to regulate ear inflorescence meristem (IM) development and thus affects EL in maize. Here, we reveal that YIGE2, the paralog of YIGE1, regulates maize ear development and EL through auxin pathway. Knockout of YIGE2 causes a significant decrease of auxin level, IM length, floret number, EL, and grain yield. yige1 yige2 double mutants had even shorter IM and ears implying that these two genes redundantly regulate IM development and EL. The genes controlling auxin levels are differential expressed in yige1 yige2 double mutants, leading to lower auxin level. These results elucidated the critical role of YIGE2 and the redundancy between YIGE2 and YIGE1 in maize ear development, providing a new genetic resource for maize yield improvement. Reasonable excavation step footage and lining support timing are highly important for improving tunnel construction efficiency and ensuring construction safety. Taking the Huanxian No. 1 Tunnel of the Xi-Yin railway as the basis of this study, a 3D numerical model was established using MIDAS GTS NX290 finite element software. This model was used to investigate the deformation and force characteristics of the tunnel-surrounding rock and support structures under three different excavation footages and four different lining construction timings; the numerical results were then compared with the on-site monitoring results. This research aimed to determine reasonable excavation parameters for the three-bench seven-step excavation method used in shallowly buried loess tunnels. The results revealed positive correlations between the excavation step footage and surface subsidence, crown subsidence, and clearance convergence. An excavation footage of 3 m could balance construction efficiency and safety effectively. Keeping the secondary lining construction time unchanged, the early closure of the initial support was beneficial for reducing the force on the secondary lining. Keeping the early closure time of the initial support unchanged, the early construction of the secondary lining would lead to an increase in the force on the secondary lining. The initial support of the tunnel is recommended to be closed as early as possible, and the construction of the secondary lining should be shifted by 21 m behind the upper step palm surface. By comparing the on-site monitoring data with the numerical simulation results, similar trends were observed, providing reference and guidance for the subsequent construction of large-section tunnels in shallowly buried loess formations. To effectively detect motion sickness induced by virtual reality environments, we developed a classification model specifically designed for visually induced motion sickness, employing a phase-locked value (PLV) functional connectivity matrix and a CNN-LSTM architecture. This model addresses the shortcomings of traditional machine learning algorithms, particularly their limited capability in handling nonlinear data. We constructed PLV-based functional connectivity matrices and network topology maps across six different frequency bands using EEG data from 25 participants. Our analysis indicated that visually induced motion sickness significantly alters the synchronization patterns in the EEG, especially affecting the frontal and temporal lobes. The functional connectivity matrix served as the input for our CNN-LSTM model, which was used to classify states of visually induced motion sickness. The model demonstrated superior performance over other methods, achieving the highest classification accuracy in the gamma frequency band. Specifically, it reached a maximum average accuracy of 99.56% in binary classification and 86.94% in ternary classification. These results underscore the model's enhanced classification effectiveness and stability, making it a valuable tool for aiding in the diagnosis of motion sickness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study introduces a method to explore and broaden potential design avenues for a product by identifying opportunities for innovative design through requirement conflicts. The process involves clarifying user-expected demands using the Ideal Final Result approach and identifying potential conflicts by assessing product performance constraints and user expectations. Utilizing standardized representations of requirement conflicts, a knowledge retrieval technique based on expanding co-referential relationships is applied to analyze these conflicts. A judgment matrix is created to pinpoint clues for recognizing innovative design opportunities initially. Furthermore, the nine-windows method is utilized to expand and identify innovation opportunities along the time and system axis, leading to the identification of two types of innovation opportunities and their expanded outcomes. Solar energy is a type of renewable and sustainable energy. Enhancing the acquisition and utilization of solar radiation in urban residential areas is a crucial strategy for advancing sustainable development goals. The morphology of urban residential areas plays a vital role in determining their solar radiation acquisition (SRA) potential. Existing studies have primarily focused on exploring the correlation between the individual morphology index and SRA potential for residential areas. However, in the actual process of project design, there is a common need to simultaneously adjust multiple morphology indexes according to specific criteria. The question of "How to compare the magnitude of the impact of simultaneous changes in multiple morphology indexes on the SRA potential of a residential area" has not yet been systematically analyzed and fully answered. This study compares the sensitivity of multiple morphology indexes when changed collectively and assesses their comprehensive impact on the SRA potential of residential areas. The aim is to determine how to comprehensively control multiple morphology indexes in the early planning and design stages to maximize solar energy utilization in residential areas. It is concluded that, when considering the floor area ratio index under identical conditions, an increase in building density proves more advantageous for enhancing SRA compared to an increase in building height. In cases where the building height is less than 24 m and the floor area ratio is below 1.5, elevating the building density yields greater photovoltaic (PV) potential for the residential area. With a limited site area, the impact of building height on SRA far outweighs that of the layout. The layout does not significantly affect the annual solar radiation amount per unit of external surface area (ASU). With increasing building height, the impact of layout on heating season solar radiation amount per unit of external surface area (HSU) becomes more pronounced. A vertical staggered layout and a row layout exhibit significantly superior performance compared to a horizontal staggered layout in this regard. However, when the building height exceeds 24 m and the floor area ratio surpasses 1.5, the PV potential of the vertical staggered layout surpasses that of the row layout and horizontal staggered layout for the same building height. The influence of building height on SRA is slightly greater than that of the building orientation under similar conditions. Simple Summary: Although the geographic distribution and production of rice are significantly influenced by temperature fluctuations, rice plants have developed a wide range of physiological, biochemical, and molecular responses to cope with and adapt to temperature stresses, including cold stress resulting from low temperatures. Deciphering cold-responsive genes and the underlying mechanisms may accelerate the development of new cold-resistant rice varieties and ensure stable rice production in adverse temperature conditions. This review aims to provide a straightforward summary of the previous progress in understanding the functions and molecular mechanisms of cold-responsive genes in rice. Rice (Oryza sativa L.) production is highly susceptible to temperature fluctuations, which can significantly reduce plant growth and development at different developmental stages, resulting in a dramatic loss of grain yield. Over the past century, substantial efforts have been undertaken to investigate the physiological, biochemical, and molecular mechanisms of cold stress tolerance in rice. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the recent developments and trends in this field. We summarized the previous advancements and methodologies used for identifying cold-responsive genes and the molecular mechanisms of cold tolerance in rice. Integration of new technologies has significantly improved studies in this era, facilitating the identification of essential genes, QTLs, and molecular modules in rice. These findings have accelerated the molecular breeding of cold-resistant rice varieties. In addition, functional genomics, including the investigation of natural variations in alleles and artificially developed mutants, is emerging as an exciting new approach to investigating cold tolerance. Looking ahead, it is imperative for scientists to evaluate the collective impacts of these novel genes to develop rice cultivars resilient to global climate change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
