Dielectric capacitor has been rapidly developed in recent years, and the ceramics nanofibers/polymer nanocomposites with improved dielectric properties have huge potential in exploitation and application. In this article, the barium titanate (BT) nanofibers were synthesized by electrospinning and encapsulated by titanium dioxide (TiO2) via sol–gel method to prepare the core–shell structured BT@TiO2 nanofibers and then utilized to prepare poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based nanocomposites. The study we have performed shows that the dielectric constant of BT@TiO2/PVDF composites with 4 vol% fillers increase to 24 at 1 kHz, accompanied with the low dielectric loss of 0.019. The breakdown strength of BT@TiO2/PVDF composites achieves 128 kV/mm at the content of 2 vol% BT@TiO2 nanofibers, which is 150% of PVDF and 170% of BT/PVDF composites with the same content of fillers. Meanwhile, the tensile stress of BT@TiO2/PVDF composites also reaches the highest value of 44.01 MPa with 2 vol% fillers. In addition, the initial thermal decomposition temperature decreases with the increasing of BT@TiO2 nanofibers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Study Design Basic Science. To investigate humeral head translations and glenohumeral ligament elongation with a dual fluoroscopic imaging system. Background The glenohumeral ligaments are partially responsible for restraining the humeral head during the extremes of shoulder motion. However, in-vivo glenohumeral ligaments elongation patterns have yet to be determined. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to 1) quantify the in-vivo humeral head translations and glenohumeral ligament elongations during functional shoulder positions, 2) compare the inferred glenohumeral ligament functions with previous literature and 3) create a baseline data of healthy adult shoulder glenohumeral ligament lengths as controls for future studies. Methods Five healthy adult shoulders were studied with a validated dual fluoroscopic imaging system (DFIS) and MR imaging technique. Humeral head translations and the superior, middle and inferior glenohumeral ligaments (SGHL, MGHL, IGHL) elongations were determined. Results The humeral head center on average translated in a range of 6.0mm in the anterior-posterior direction and 2.5mm in the superior-inferior direction. The MGHL showed greater elongation over a broader range of shoulder motion than the SGHL. The anterior-band (AB)-IGHL showed maximum elongation at 90° abduction with maximum external rotation. The posterior-band (PB)-IGHL showed maximum elongation at 90° abduction with maximum internal rotation. Discussion The results demonstrated that the humeral head translated statistically more in the anterior-posterior direction than the superior-inferior direction (p = 0.01), which supports the concept that glenohumeral kinematics are not ball-in-socket mechanics. The AB-IGHL elongation pattern makes it an important static structure to restrain anterior subluxation of the humeral head during the externally rotated cocking phase of throwing motion. These data suggest that in healthy adult shoulders the ligamentous structures of the glenohumeral joint are not fully elongated in many shoulder positions, but function as restraints at the extremes of glenohumeral motion. Clinically, these results may be helpful in restoring ligament anatomy during the treatment of anterior instability of the shoulder.

Abstract Background Quantitative knowledge on the anatomy of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) is important for treatment of MCL injury and for MCL release during total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The objective of this study was to quantitatively determine the morphology of the MCL of human knees. Methods 10 cadaveric human knees were dissected to investigate the MCL anatomy. The specimens were fixed in full extension and this position was maintained during the dissection and morphometric measurements. The outlines of the insertion sites of the superficial MCL (sMCL) and deep MCL (dMCL) were digitized using a 3D digitizing system. Results The insertion areas of the superficial MCL (sMCL) were 348.6 ± 42.8 mm2 and 79.7 ± 17.6 mm2 on the tibia and femur, respectively. The insertion areas of the deep MCL (dMCL) were 63.6 ± 13.4 mm2 and 71.9 ± 14.8 mm2 on the tibia and femur, respectively. The distances from the centroids of the tibial and femoral insertions of the sMCL to the tibial and femoral joint line were 62.4 ± 5.5 mm and 31.1 ± 4.6 mm, respectively. The distances from the centroids of dMCL in the tibial insertion and the femoral insertion to the tibial and femoral joint line were 6.5 ± 1.3 mm and 20.5 ± 4.2 mm, respectively. The distal portion of the dMCL (meniscotibial ligament - MTL) was approximately 1.7 times wider than the proximal portion of the dMCL (meniscofemoral ligament - MFL), whereas the MFL was approximately 3 times longer than the MTL. Conclusions The morphologic data on the MCL may provide useful information for improving treatments of MCL-related pathology and performing MCL release during TKA.

Abstract Introduction This report presents a new imaging technique for non-invasive study of six degrees of freedom (DOF) knee kinematics during treadmill gait. Materials and methods A treadmill was integrated into a dual fluoroscopic imaging system (DFIS) to formulate a gait analysis system. To demonstrate the application of the system, a healthy subject walked on the treadmill at four different speeds (1.5, 2.0, 2.5 and 3.0 MPH) while the DFIS captured the knee motion during three strides under each speed. Characters of knee joint motion were analyzed in 6DOF during the treadmill walking. Results The speed of the knee motion was lower than that of the treadmill. Flexion amplitudes increased with increasing walking speed. Motion patterns in other DOF were not affected by increase in walking speed. The motion character was repeatable under each treadmill speed. Conclusion The presented technique can be used to accurately measure the 6DOF knee kinematics at normal walking speeds.

Abstract Background Despite the numerous in-vitro studies on the mechanical properties and simulated injury mechanisms of the anterior talofibular ligament (ATFL) and calcaneofibular ligament (CFL), the in-vivo biomechanical behavior of these two ligaments has not yet been described. Methods Apparent length of the ATFL and CFL was measured in four ankles in healthy male subjects between 32 and 45 years of age (two left and two right) during a dorsiflexion-plantarflexion and supination-pronation arc of motion using a combined dual-orthogonal fluoroscopic and magnetic resonance imaging technique. Results The ATFL elongated from the neutral position at 16.3 +/- 3.0 mm to 20.8 +/- 2.7 mm at maximal plantarflexion and shortened significantly from the neutral position to 13.9 +/- 2.9 mm at maximal dorsiflexion (p = 0.01). The CFL shortened from the neutral position at 28.0 +/- 2.9 mm to 26.6 +/- 2.2 mm at maximal plantarflexion (p = 0.08) and elongated significantly from the neutral position to 29.9 +/- 3.0 mm at maximal dorsiflexion (p = 0.003). The ATFL elongated significantly from 14.8 +/- 2.5 mm at maximal pronation to 17.4 +/- 3.0 mm at maximal supination (p = 0.08). At the same time, the CFL shortened from 31.0 +/- 3.8 mm at maximal pronation to 26.9 +/- 3.6 mm at maximal supination (p = 0.02). Conclusion The results showed that the ATFL elongates more during plantarflexion and supination whereas the CFL increases in length with dorsiflexion and pronation. Concurrently, these data also demonstrated the reciprocal function between the two ligaments. While one shortens, the other one elongates. The different elongation of the ATFL and CFL during the same motion arc suggests that under excessive loading conditions the ATFL might be more vulnerable in plantarflexion and supination while the CFL might be more susceptible to injury in dorsiflexion and pronation. Furthermore, in the case of surgical reconstruction the grafts used to reconstruct the two ligaments may need to be tensioned at different positions of the ankle in order to reproduce their natural in vivo function.

Purpose: To analyze the biomechanical integrity of 2 posterolateral corner (PLC) reconstruction techniques using a sophisticated robotic biomechanical system that enables analysis of joint kinematics under dynamic external loads.Methods: Eight cadaveric human knee specimens were tested. Five N·m external torque followed by 5 N·m varus torque was dynamically applied to each specimen. The 6 degrees of freedom kinematics of the joint were measured in 4 states (intact, PLC-deficient, fibular-based docking, and anatomic PLC reconstructed) at 30°, 60°, and 90° of flexion. Tibial external rotation (ER) and varus rotation (VR) were compared.Results: Under external torque, ER significantly increased from the intact state to the PLC-deficient state across all flexion angles. At 30° of flexion, ER was not significantly different between the intact state (19.9°) and fibular-based (18.7°, P = .336) and anatomic reconstructions (14.9°, P = .0977). At 60°, ER was not significantly different between the intact state and fibular-based reconstruction (22.4°, compared with 19.8° in intact; P = .152) but showed overconstraint after anatomic reconstruction (15.7°; P = .0315). At 90°, ER was not significantly different between the intact state and anatomic reconstruction (15.4°, compared with 19.7° in intact; P = .386) but was with the fibular-based technique (23.5°; P = .0125).Conclusion: Both a fibular-based docking technique and an anatomic technique for isolated PLC reconstruction provided appropriate constraint through most tested knee range of motion, yet the fibular-based docking technique underconstrained the knee at 90°, and the anatomic reconstruction overconstrained the knee at 60°. Biomechanically, either technique may be considered for surgical treatment of high-grade isolated PLC injuries.Clinical Relevance: This biomechanical study utilizing clinically-relevant dynamic forces on the knee shows that either a simplified fibular-based docking technique or a more complex anatomic technique may be considered for surgical treatment of high-grade isolated PLC injuries. Purpose: To investigate the in vivo femoral condyle motion and synergistic function of the ACL/PCL along the weight-bearing knee flexion.Methods: Twenty-two healthy human knees were imaged using a combined MRI and dual fluoroscopic imaging technique during a single-legged lunge (0°-120°). The medial and lateral femoral condyle translation and rotation (measured using geometric center axis-GCA), and the length changes of the ACL/PCL were analyzed at: low (0°-30°), mid-range (30°-90°) and high (90°-120°) flexion of the knee.Results: At low flexion (0°-30°), the strains of the ACL and the posterior-medial bundle of the PCL decreased. The medial condyle showed anterior translation and lateral condyle posterior translation, accompanied with a sharp increase in external GCA rotation (internal tibial rotation). As the knee continued flexion in mid-range (30°-90°), both ACL and PCL were slack (with negative strain values). The medial condyle moved anteriorly before 60° of flexion and then posteriorly, accompanied with a slow increase of GCA rotation. As the knee flexed in high flexion (90°-120°), only the PCL had increasingly strains. Both medial and lateral condyles moved posteriorly with a rather constant GCA rotation.Conclusions: The ACL and PCL were shown to play a reciprocal and synergistic role during knee flexion. Mid-range reciprocal anterior-posterior femoral translation or laxity corresponds to minimal constraints of the ACL and PCL, and may represent a natural motion character of normal knees. The data could be used as a valuable reference when managing the mid-range "instability" and enhancing high flexion capability of the knee after TKAs.Level Of Evidence: Level IV.
