Abstract Compulsivity is a poorly understood transdiagnostic construct thought to underlie multiple disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder, addictions, and binge eating. Our current understanding of the causes of compulsive behavior remains primarily based on investigations into specific diagnostic categories or findings relying on one or two laboratory measures to explain complex phenotypic variance. This proof-of-concept study drew on a heterogeneous sample of community-based individuals (N = 45; 18–45 years; 25 female) exhibiting compulsive behavioral patterns in alcohol use, eating, cleaning, checking, or symmetry. Data-driven statistical modeling of multidimensional markers was utilized to identify homogeneous subtypes that were independent of traditional clinical phenomenology. Markers were based on well-defined measures of affective processing and included psychological assessment of compulsivity, behavioral avoidance, and stress, neurocognitive assessment of reward vs. punishment learning, and biological assessment of the cortisol awakening response. The neurobiological validity of the subtypes was assessed using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Statistical modeling identified three stable, distinct subtypes of compulsivity and affective processing, which we labeled “Compulsive Non-Avoidant”, “Compulsive Reactive” and “Compulsive Stressed”. They differed meaningfully on validation measures of mood, intolerance of uncertainty, and urgency. Most importantly, subtypes captured neurobiological variance on amygdala-based resting-state functional connectivity, suggesting they were valid representations of underlying neurobiology and highlighting the relevance of emotion-related brain networks in compulsive behavior. Although independent larger samples are needed to confirm the stability of subtypes, these data offer an integrated understanding of how different systems may interact in compulsive behavior and provide new considerations for guiding tailored intervention decisions.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is frequent and often disabling. Yet, correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment implementation are usually delayed, with undesirable consequences. In this paper we review the rationale for early intervention in OCD and provide recommendations for early intervention services. Two scenarios are discussed, i.e., subclinical (prodromal) obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS) and full-blown OCD. Although the typical patient with OCD reports a long history of subclinical OCS, longitudinal studies suggest most individuals with OCS in the community do not convert to full-blown OCD. Thus, research on “at risk” phenotypes for OCD and how they should incorporate different risk factors (e.g., polygenic risk scores) are badly needed. For this specific scenario, preventative treatments that are cheap, well tolerated and highly scalable (e.g., lifestyle interventions) are of major interest. On the other hand, increasing evidence suggests OCD to be a progressive disorder and the severity and duration of illness to be associated with both biological changes and increased clinical complexity, including greater number of physical and psychiatric comorbidities, increased family accommodation and worse treatment response. Therefore, prompt identification and early treatment implementation for full-blown OCD are also critical for ethical, clinical and therapeutic reasons. Based on the existing findings, we argue that, regardless of focusing on subclinical OCS or clinical OCD, early intervention services need to target a childhood age group. In addition to delivering well established treatments to people with full-blown OCD early on their illness, early intervention services also need to provide psychoeducation for patients, families and teachers.

Here, the authors study the impact of Vibrio cholerae’s T6SS on human gut microbiota isolates and show that certain bacteria are protected from T6SS attacks in an immunity protein-independent manner. Specifically, protection occurred through superior T6SS weaponry in members of the Enterobacter cloacae complex and by molecular armors made of membrane-tethered capsular polysaccharides of diverse Klebsiella isolates.

The soybean cyst nematode (SCN) (Heterodera glycines Ichinohe) is a significant yield-limiting factor in soybean production in the Midwestern US. Several management practices are implemented to mitigate yield losses caused by SCN, including using SDHI (succinate dehydrogenase inhibitors) fungicides delivered as seed treatments. A set of studies was conducted to evaluate the effect of two seed-applied succinate dehydrogenase inhibitors (SDHI) compounds, fluopyram and pydiflumetofen, on SCN population densities, plant injury, and plant growth. Cyst counts in untreated control and pydiflumetofen treated plants were 3.44 and 3.59 times higher than fluopyram, respectively, while egg counts were 8.25 and 7.06 times higher in control and pydiflumetofen. Next-generation sequencing was later employed to identify transcriptomic shifts in gene expression profiles in fluopyram and pydiflumetofen -treated seedlings. RNA expression patterns of seed treatments clustered by sampling time (5 DAP vs. 10 DAP); therefore, downstream analysis was conducted by timepoint. At 5 DAP, 10,870 and 325 differentially expressed genes (DEG) were identified in fluopyram and pydiflumetofen, respectively. These same treatments generated 219 and 2 DEGs at 10 DAP. Multiple DEGs identified in soybean seedlings treated with fluopyram are linked to systemic resistance, suggesting a potential role of systemic resistance in the suppression of SCN by fluopyram, in addition to the known nematicidal activity. The non-target inhibition of soybean succinate dehydrogenase genes by fluopyram may be the origin of the phytotoxicity symptoms observed and potentially the source of the systemic resistance activation reported in the current study. This work helps to elucidate the mechanisms of suppression of SCN by fluopyram.

Resumo Objetivo: Este artigo analisa a capacidade absortiva e as ações de inovação de empresas incubadas na Incubadora de Agronegócios das Cooperativas, Organizações Comunitárias, Associações e Assentamentos Rurais do Semiárido da Paraíba (Iacoc). Originalidade/valor: O valor desta pesquisa é a validação da literatura e efetividade do processo de fomento de incubadoras aos empreendimentos incubados, cuja transferência de recursos/conhecimento pode gerar inovação. Apresentamos a relação teórica entre a capacidade absortiva e as ações de inovação no contexto de empreendimentos incubados, inspirando práticas de gestão para inovações de diversos tipos, inclusive em contextos específicos, como o do agronegócio. Design/metodologia/abordagem: Realizamos um estudo multicasos qualitativo, cujas análises se concentram em seis empreendimentos incubados na Iacoc. Foram utilizadas pesquisa documental e entrevistas semiestruturadas com os principais gestores, sendo os dados processados pelo software ATLAS.ti. Posterior análise de conteúdo enquadrou os dados em quatro categorias centrais: capacidade absortiva realizada aliada às inovações de produto, de marketing, de processo e organizacional. Resultados: Os resultados mostram que os empreendimentos analisados apresentaram avanços a partir da capacidade absortiva realizada, com a geração de inovações em gestão e planejamento, gestão de pessoas, direcionamento de técnicas de produção, em características de concepção de produtos e acesso a mercados, entre outros. Defendemos que a associação teórica do campo da capacidade absortiva e a inovação no contexto de empreendimentos incubados podem desencadear ganhos substanciais ao campo temático e aos atores de ecossistemas de inovação: captação de conhecimento pelas empresas, ações de inovação, transformação dos envolvidos nas iniciativas e impacto socioeconômico. / Abstract Purpose: This article analyzes companies’ absorptive capacity and innovation actions incubated in the Agribusiness Incubator of Cooperatives, Community Organizations, Associations, and Rural Settlements of the Semiarid Region of Paraíba (Iacoc). Originality/value: The value of this research is the validation of the literature and the process’ effectiveness of fostering incubators with incubated enterprises, whose transfer of resources/knowledge can generate innovation. We present the theoretical relationship between absorptive capacity and innovation actions in the context of incubated enterprises, inspiring management practices for different types of innovation, including in specific contexts, such as agribusiness. Design/methodology/approach: We carried out a qualitative multicase study whose analysis focused on six projects incubated at Iacoc. Documentary research and semi-structured interviews with the leading managers were used, and the ATLAS.ti software processed the data. Subsequent content analysis framed the data into four main categories: absorptive capacity combined with the product, marketing, process, and organizational innovations. Findings: Results show that the analyzed projects presented advancements from the absorptive capacity realized, with the generation of innovations in management and planning, people management, the direction of production techniques, product design characteristics, and access to markets. We argue that the theoretical association of the field of absorptive capacity and innovation in the context of incubated enterprises can trigger substantial gains for the thematic area and the actors of innovation ecosystems: the capture of knowledge by companies, innovation actions, the transformation of those involved in the initiatives and socioeconomic impact.

Nutrient dynamics play an essential role in aquatic ecosystems. Despite advances in sensor technology, nutrient concentrations are difficult and expensive to monitor in-situ and in real-time. Emerging data-driven methods may provide surrogate measures for nutrient concentrations. In this work, we use 4-years of water quality data with high-frequency (15-min) intervals acquired at 2 automatic stations in the German Danube River to train data-driven algorithms and build surrogate measures for nitrate (NO3--N), ammonium (NH4+-N), and orthophosphate (PO43--P). Pre-processing of the data included removing outliers and filling missing values by linear interpolation. Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) and Random Forest (RF) are trained, cross-validated, and tested using dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature (Temp), conductivity (EC), pH, discharge rate (Q), and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) as input futures. Additionally, we used time-series data to develop cyclical features to test improvements in the underlying relationship between data. This work presents a thorough description of the modeling workflow, including intermediate steps for feature engineering, feature selection, and hyperparameter optimization. In total, 12 surrogate models (2 algorithms * 3 constituents * 2 stations) are compared with R2 and RMSE as error metrics. The results show that RF outperforms MLR when adding at least three predictors for all the surrogate models. The MLR models give R2-values for NO3--N 0.67 and 0.89, NH4+-N 0.39 and 0.40, PO43--P 0.34 and 0.54 of Pfelling station and Jochenstein station, respectively. RF models produce accurate predictions and low error performances for all the targets NO3--N (R2 = 0.99 and 0.99), NH4+-N (R2 = 0.98 and 0.99), PO43--P (R2 = 0.96 and 0.96). The percentage improvement of RMSE for RF compared to MLR in prediction nutrients ranges from 73 to 92%. This work demonstrates the usefulness of surrogate models using the RF algorithm when reproducing nutrient dynamics and serving as soft sensors for monitoring nutrient concentrations.

Introduction Obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs) and disorders due to addictive behaviours (DABs) are prevalent conditions that share behavioural and neurobiological characteristics. The Research Domain Criteria lists a series of constructs whose dysfunctions may be present in both groups of disorders. The present study will describe the research protocol of a scoping review of the literature on self-report scales and questionnaires that tap dysfunctional constructs that underlie OCRDs and DABs.Methods and analysis This protocol outlines a scoping review on self-report tools and questionnaires that assess OCRDs and DABs-related constructs. The scoping review will select sources in MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsychINFO and Web of Science databases. Inclusion and exclusion criteria will be designed according to the Population, Concept, Context, Types of source framework. Two reviewers will screen independently titles, abstracts and full texts to determine the eligibility of articles. A methodological framework including six stages steps ((1) identifying a research question; (2) identifying relevant studies; (3) study selection; (4) charting the data; (5) collating, summarising and reporting the result) will be used, and the findings will be reported according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews checklist. Information extracted will be collated, and quantitative results will be presented using descriptive statistics such as percentages, tables, charts and flow diagrams as appropriate.Ethics and dissemination Ethical approval for conducting this scoping review is not required, as this study will involve secondary analysis of existing literature. The use of fruits and their by-products in food has dramatically impacted the food industry due to the nutritional benefits and the technological and sensory effects of food matrices. Therefore, this research aimed to evaluate the effects of adding cupuassu (Theobroma grandiflorum) pulp and flour on fermented milk beverages’ physicochemical, microbial, and sensory properties during refrigerated storage (0, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days). Twelve formulations were realized with different percentages of cupuassu pulp (0, 5, 7.5, and 10% w/v) and flour (0, 1.5, and 3% w/v). The treatments with 3% cupuassu flour presented the highest percentages of protein, fat, fiber, and carbohydrates, compared with the samples containing pulp. On the other hand, the addition of pulp increased water retention capacity and color parameters (L*, a*, b*, and C*) and decreased pH and syneresis on day 0 of storage. During storage, the samples with pulp showed increases in pH values, consistency index, and apparent viscosity. In comparison, cupuassu flour addition decreased syneresis values and increased L* and b* during storage, as did pulp. In addition, sample HPHF (10% pulp and 3% cupuassu flour), based on just-about-right, penalty, and check-all-that-apply analyses, improved some sensory attributes of the fermented milk beverage, such as brown color, acid taste, bitter taste, cupuassu flavor, and firm texture. It can be concluded that cupuassu pulp and flour addition improves the physicochemical and sensory quality of fermented milk beverages and can provide nutritional value to the product.

Abstract Background Ascorbic acid (AA) is a micronutrient essential for the mechanisms of reproduction, growth, and defense in fish. However, the biosynthesis of this micronutrient does not occur in fish, so it must be supplied with food. A difficulty is that plain AA is unstable, due to the effects of light, high temperature, and oxygen, among others. The use of nanoencapsulation may provide protection and preserve the physicochemical characteristics of AA for extended periods of time, decreasing losses due to environmental factors. Method This study evaluated the protective effect of nanoencapsulation in polymeric nanoparticles (chitosan and polycaprolactone) against AA degradation. Introduction: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by a range of phenotypic expressions. Gender may be a relevant factor in mediating the disorder's heterogeneity. The aim of the present report was to explore a large multisite clinical sample of OCD patients, hypothesizing existing demographic, geographical and clinical differences between male and female patients with OCD. Methods: Socio-demographic and clinical variables of 491 adult OCD outpatients recruited in the International College of Obsessive-Compulsive Spectrum Disorders (ICOCS) network were investigated with a retrospective analysis on a previously gathered set of data from eleven countries worldwide. Modelling runoff generation in high-elevation Alpine catchments requires detailed knowledge on the spatio-temporal distribution of snow storage. With Sentinel-2 MultiSpectral Instrument (MSI), it is possible to map snow cover with a high temporal and spatial resolution. In contrast to the coarse MODIS data, Sentinel-2 MSI enables the investigation of small-scale differences in snow cover duration in complex terrains due to gravitational redistribution (slope), energy balance and wind-driven redistribution (aspect). In this study, we describe the generation of high-resolution spatial and temporal snow cover data sets from Sentinel-2 images for a high-elevation Alpine catchment and discuss how the data contribute to our understanding of the spatio-temporal snow cover distribution. The quality of snow and cloud detection is evaluated against in-situ snow observations and against other snow and cloud products. The main problem was in the false detection of snow in the presence of clouds and in topographically shaded areas. We then seek to explore the potential of the generated high-resolution snow cover maps in calibrating the gravitational snow redistribution module of a physically based snow model, especially for an area with a very data-scarce point snow observation network. Generally, the calibrated snow model is able to simulate both the mean snow cover duration with a high F1 accuracy score of > 0.9 and the fractional snow-covered area with a correlation coefficient of 0.98. The snow model is also able to reproduce spatio-temporal variability in snow cover duration due to surface energy balance dynamics, wind and gravitational redistribution.

Abstract Background The nature and existence of free will have been debated for centuries. Since some psychiatric disorders are known to interfere with one’s ability to control their actions and thoughts (e.g., schizophrenia), the investigation of the psychiatric facet of free will beliefs seems to be relevant. In this systematic review, we were interested in clarifying if and how having a mental disorder affects individuals’ beliefs in free will by comparing psychiatric vs. non-psychiatric samples. Methods A systematic search of MEDLINE, Web of Science, EMBASE, and PsycINFO databases was performed between 04 and 09 November 2020. The search strategy included “free will” and related constructs and terms related to DSM-5 mental disorders characterized by psychotic, compulsive, avoidant, or impulsive symptoms. Eligible designs of studies included case-control and cohort studies. Study selection took place in committee meetings consisting of six researchers. Quality assessment of the selected studies was performed through the Joanna Briggs Institute Appraisal Checklist for Case Control Studies. Results After removing duplicates, a total of 12,218 titles/abstracts were screened. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were followed, and three articles were eventually selected. Conclusions It is not possible to provide unequivocal confirmation that having a mental disorder can or cannot affect someone’s belief in free will. Studies with different mental disorders should be conducted in this field. Systematic review registration PROSPERO CRD42018109468.
