203. Immune-Inspired Adaptable Error Detection for Automated Teller Machines.

Abstract

This paper presents an immune-inspired adaptable error detection (AED) framework for automated teller machines (ATMs). This framework has two levels: one is local to a single ATM, while the other is network-wide. The framework employs vaccination and adaptability analogies of the immune system. For discriminating between normal and erroneous states, an immune-inspired one-class supervised algorithm was employed, which supports continual learning and adaptation. The effectiveness of the proposed approach was confirmed in terms of classification performance and impact on availability. The overall results are encouraging as the downtime of ATMs can de reduced by anticipating the occurrence of failures before they actually occur. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

The aim of this study is to present a detailed continuum mechanics formulation, and the corresponding algorithms, to predict the deformation of skeletal muscle at different structural levels, starting from the muscle fiber level. The model is used to investigate force production and structural changes during isometric and dynamic contractions of the cat medial gastrocnemius. From a comparison with experimental data obtained in our own laboratories, we conclude that the model faithfully predicts all of the observations pertaining to force production, fascicle length and angle of pennation under various test conditions. 210. Evaluation of carboxymethylcellulose, hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, and aluminum hydroxide as potential carriers for rhBMP2

Abstract

Conventional iliac crest nonvascularized corticocancelous bone grafts and bone flaps have been used to treat bony defects. However, these treatments have some limitations, namely, the availability of donor tissue, donor site morbidity, difficulty to shape the bone flap to the defect, and complexity of the surgery. The bone morphogenetic protein rhBMP2 is osteoinductive. However, its implantation requires a matrix carrier in order to define the shape of the resulting bone and to retain the protein at the site for the time required for induction to occur. When the ideal carrier is found, an unlimited supply of material would be available for all applications where bone is needed. In this in vitrostudy, we evaluated the suitability of some potential carriers for rhBMP2 by measuring the alkaline phosphatase ALP activity of fibroblast cultures. Either rhBMP2 or sodium carboxymethylcellulose significantly increased the ALP activity, when used alone. When sodium carboxymethylcellulose was combined with rhBMP2, there was an increase in the ALP activity, but lower than those obtained when the products were used alone. Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose alone did not affect ALP activity. However, the combination of rhBMP2 with hydroxypropylmethylcellulose did not increase the ALP activity, despite the presence of rhBMP2. 211. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of prophylactic recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor to reduce nosocomial infections in very low birth weight neonates

Abstract

Objective: We carried out a randomized placebo-controlled trial in very low birth weight neonates (VLBWNs), comparing the incidence of nosocomial infections after the prophylactic use of recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (rhu GM-CSF) versus placebo in VLBWNs. Study design: VLBWNs (n = 264), weighing 501 to 1000 g, @?72 hours of age were randomly assigned to receive rhu GM-CSF (8 @mg/kg/d), administered intravenously (n = 134) over 2 hours daily x 7 days and every other day for 21 days, or placebo (n = 130). The safety, incidence of nosocomial infections, days of absolute neutrophil count >=4000/mm,^3 peripheral blood progenitor studies, and 24-hour polymorphonuclear leukocyte C3bi receptor expression were compared between the 2 treatment groups. Results: No (grade III/IV) toxicity or adverse events were associated with rhu GM-CSF. The absolute neutrophil count and absolute eosinophil count were significantly elevated in the rhu GM-CSF group on days 7 (P = .001), 14 (P = .001), and 21 (P = .007) and on days 7 and 28 (P = .012 and P = .001, respectively). However, there was no difference in the incidence of confirmed nosocomial infections between the 2 treatment groups in this trial (40% vs 39%, rhu GM-CSF vs placebo; P = NS). Conclusion: In a large randomized placebo-controlled trial, prophylactic administration of rhu GM-CSF in VLBWNs does not appear to decrease the incidence of nosocomial infections. Abstract

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs that regulate target gene expression and hence play important roles in metabolic pathways. Recent studies have evidenced the interrelation of miRNAs with cell proliferation, differentiation, development, and diseases. Since they are involved in gene regulation, they are intrinsically related to metabolic pathways. This leads to questions that are particularly interesting for investigating medical and laboratorial applications. We developed an miRNApath online database that uses miRNA target genes to link miRNAs to metabolic pathways. Currently, databases about miRNA target genes (DIANA miRGen), genomic maps (miRNAMap) and sequences (miRBase) do not provide such correlations. Additionally, miRNApath offers five search services and a download area. For each search, there is a specific type of input, which can be a list of target genes, miRNAs, or metabolic pathways, which results in different views, depending upon the input data, concerning relationships between the target genes, miRNAs and metabolic pathways. There are also internal links that lead to a deeper analysis and cross-links to other databases with more detailed information. miRNApath is being continually updated and is available at http://lgmb.fmrp.usp.br/mirnapath.
