Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) tomography (TomoSAR) estimates scene reflectivity along elevation coordinates, based on multi-baseline measurements. Common TomoSAR approaches are based on every single range-azimuth cell or the cell’s neighborhood. By using an additional synthetic aperture for elevation, these techniques have higher resolution power for elevation, to discriminate scatterers with differences in location in the same range-azimuth cell. However, they cannot provide sufficient range resolution power to discriminate these scatterers by joining different spectra to a wider range spectrum, which limits the resolution power of TomoSAR. Therefore, in this paper, we proposed using a compressive sensing (CS) technique to reconstruct range and elevation signals from multi-baseline SAR images. This TomoSAR method not only retrieves the vertical signals but also improves the resolution in the range, which helps improve the resolution power of the TomoSAR technique. We present the theory of the CS-based two-dimensional TomoSAR technique and compare it to the CS-based one-dimensional TomoSAR technique. The excellent resolution power and scatterer localization accuracy of this novel technique are demonstrated using simulations and real data obtained by RADARSAT-2 in Lanzhou, China.

To investigate the clinical and imaging predictors of surgical outcomes in patients with ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL).From May 2010 to April 2012, a total of 200 consecutive patients with cervical OPLL were recruited for this study. Of them, 184 patients (130 men and 54 women) who could be tracked for more than 24 months after surgery were finally included for analysis. Their demographic, clinical and radiological data were collected preoperatively. The recovery ratio in terms of JOA score was used to assess the outcome of the patients preoperatively and at 2 years postoperatively. A JOA recovery rate less than 50% was considered a poor outcome.Compared with good outcome group, an older mean age at operation, a longer mean duration of symptoms, a lower mean pre-operativer JOA score, and a higher proportion of diabetics were observed in poor outcome group. Patients in poor outcome group were more likely to present kyphotic cervical alignment, smaller mean transverse area of the spinal cord, and intramedullary signal abnormalities. The result of multivariate stepwise logistic regression showed that a longer duration of symptoms and the presence of T1 hypo-intensity intramedullary changes on MRI were significant risk factors of lower JOA recovery ratios.A longer duration of symptom, T1 hypointensity on MRI and a history of minor trauma were highly predictive of a poor outcome for patients undergoing surgical treatment of OPLL. Age at operation, the history of diabetes, the preoperative JOA score, the transverse area of the spinal cord and T2 hyper-intensity on MRI were also associated with the prognosis of OPLL.

A fiber-optic Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) has been proposed and demonstrated for the ultrasound wave (UW) imaging of seismic-physical models. The sensor probe comprises a single mode fiber (SMF) that is inserted into a ceramic tube terminated by an ultra-thin gold film. The probe performs with an excellent UW sensitivity thanks to the nanolayer gold film, and thus is capable of detecting a weak UW in air medium. Furthermore, the compact sensor is a symmetrical structure so that it presents a good directionality in the UW detection. The spectral band-side filter technique is used for UW interrogation. After scanning the models using the sensing probe in air, the two-dimensional (2D) images of four physical models are reconstructed.

BACKGROUND:C5 palsy is a serious but poorly understood complication after posterior cervical decompression that could lead to muscle weakness, brachialgia and numbness of the upper limbs. The incidence of C5 palsy varies greatly between studies. The risk factors are inconclusive and even conflicting. OBJECT:To perform a systematic review on the incidence and risk factors of C5 palsy after posterior cervical decompression. MATERIALS AND METHODS:Four databases, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane CENTRAL, were searched to identify eligible studies. Either a fixed- or a random-effects model was used to calculate the pooled odd ratio (RR) or standardized mean difference (SMD) with its 95% confidence interval (95%CI). RESULTS:Of the 589 pre-recruited studies, 25 were included in this study for systematic review. The pooled incidence of C5 palsy after posterior decompression was 5.8% (95%CI: 4.4-7.2%). The incidence after open-door laminoplasty, double-door laminoplasty and laminectomy was 4.5%, 3.1% and 11.3%, respectively. The significant risk factors of C5 palsy were OPLL (OR, 2.188; 95%CI, 1.307-3.665), narrower intervertebral foramen (SMD, -0.972; 95%CI, -1.398 to -0.545), laminectomy (vs. open-door laminoplasty, OR, 2.988; 95%CI, 1.298-6.876), excessive spinal cord drift (SMD, 1.289, 95%CI, 0,197-2.381) and male gender (OR, 1.54; 95%CI, 1.036-2.301). CONCLUSIONS:The results of this systematic review suggest that patients with excessive spinal cord drift, preexisting intervertebral foramenal stenosis, OPLL, laminectomy and male gender are at high risk for postoperative C5 palsy, and risk-reduction options should be considered for such patients.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that many types of cancers are composed of different cell types, including cancer stem cells (CSCs). We have previously shown that the chemotherapeutic agent oxaliplatin induced epithelial-mesenchymal transition, which is thought to be an important mechanism for generating CSCs. In the present study, we investigate whether oxaliplatin-treated cancer tissues possess characteristics of CSCs, and explore oxaliplatin resistance in these tissues. METHODS: Hepatocellular carcinoma cells (MHCC97H cells) were subcutaneously injected into mice to form tumors, and the mice were intravenously treated with either oxaliplatin or glucose. Five weeks later, the tumors were orthotopically xenografted into livers of other mice, and these mice were treated with either oxaliplatin or glucose. Metastatic potential, sensitivity to oxaliplatin, and expression of CSC-related markers in the xenografted tumor tissues were evaluated. DNA microarrays were used to measure changes in gene expression as a result of oxaliplatin treatment. Additionally, an oxaliplatin-resistant cell line (MHCC97H-OXA) was established to assess insulin-like growth factor 1 secretion, cell invasion, cell colony formation, oxaliplatin sensitivity, and expression of CSC-related markers. The effects of an insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor inhibitor were also assessed. RESULTS: Oxaliplatin treatment inhibited subcutaneous tumor growth. Tumors from oxaliplatin-treated mice that were subsequently xenografted into livers of other mice exhibited that decreasing sensitivity to oxaliplatin and increasing pulmonary metastatic potential. Among the expression of CSC-related proteins, the gene for insulin-like growth factor 1, was up-regulated expecially in these tumor tissues. Additionally, MHCC97H-OXA cells demonstrated that increasing cell invasion, colony formation, and expression of insulin-like growth factor 1 and CSC-related markers, whereas treatment with an inhibitor of the insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor suppressed these effects. CONCLUSION: Maintenance of stemness in oxaliplatin-resistant hepatocellular carcinoma cells is associated with increased autocrine of IGF1.

A micro-fiber-optic Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) is proposed and demonstrated experimentally for ultrasonic imaging of seismic physical models. The device consists of a micro-bubble followed by the end of a single-mode fiber (SMF). The micro-structure is formed by the discharging operation on a short segment of hollow-core fiber (HCF) that is spliced to the SMF. This micro FPI is sensitive to ultrasonic waves (UWs), especially to the high-frequency (up to 10 MHz) UW, thanks to its ultra-thin cavity wall and micro-diameter. A side-band filter technology is employed for the UW interrogation, and then the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) UW signal is achieved. Eventually the sensor is used for lateral imaging of the physical model by scanning UW detection and two-dimensional signal reconstruction.

By fixing two FBGs on the surface of a rotating shaft along the direction of ±45° and using dynamic wavelength demodulation technology, we propose an optical fiber sensing system to monitor the driving torque and torsion angle of the rotating shaft. In theory, the dependence relation of the dynamic difference of central wavelengths on the torque and torsion angle of the rotating shaft has been deduced. To verify an optical fiber sensing system, a series of sensing experiments have been completed and the measured data are approximately consistent with the theoretical analysis. The difference of two central wavelengths can be expressed as the sum of two parts: a “DC” part and a harmonic “AC” part. The driving torque or torsion angle is linear with the “DC” part of the difference of two central wavelengths, the harmonic “AC” part, meaning the torsion angle vibration, illustrates that periodic vibration torque may be caused by inhomogeneous centrifugal forces or inhomogeneous additional torques produced by the driving system and the load.

BACKGROUND: Results showed good clinical outcomes of anterior corpectomy and fusion (ACCF) for patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) during a short term follow-up; however, studies assessing long term results are relatively scarce. In this study we intended to assess the long term clinical and radiographic outcomes, find out the factors that may affect the long term clinical outcome and evaluate the incidence of adjacent segment disease (ASD). METHODS: This is a retrospective study of 145 consecutive CSM patients on ACCF treatment with a minimum follow-up of 5 years. Clinical data were collected from medical and operative records. Patients were evaluated by using the Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) scoring system preoperatively and during the follow-up. X-rays results of cervical spine were obtained from all patients. Correlations between the long term clinical outcome and various factors were also analyzed. FINDINGS: Ninety-three males and fifty-two females completed the follow-up. The mean age at operation was 51.0 years, and the mean follow-up period was 102.1 months. Both postoperative sagittal segmental alignment (SSA) and the sagittal alignment of the whole cervical spine (SACS) increased significantly in terms of cervical lordosis. The mean increase of JOA was 3.8 ± 1.3 postoperatively, and the overall recovery rate was 62.5%. Logistic regression analysis showed that preoperative duration of symptoms >12 months, high-intensity signal in spinal cord and preoperative JOA score ≤ 9 were important predictors of the fair recovery rate (≤ 50%). Repeated surgery due to ASD was performed in 7 (4.8%) cases. CONCLUSIONS: ACCF with anterior plate fixation is a reliable and effective method for treating CSM in terms of JOA score and the recovery rate. The correction of cervical alignment and the repeated surgery rate for ASD are also considered to be satisfactory.

Reliable estimations of the relative permeability of gas and water in hydrate-bearing sediments (HBS) and the dependency of the relative permeability on hydrate saturation are critical to predict the productivity of a hydrate reservoir. Yet, this remains poorly estimated owing to lack of experimental data associated with difficulties in conducting multiphase flow experiments in HBS. Recognizing the experimental challenges, this study intends to develop and validate a new experimental system and procedure of unsteady-state relative permeability test that can generate reliable and reproducible flow measurements in HBS. Gas hydrate is considered as a part of solid matrix in the sediment, so one of the challenges is to maintain a constant hydrate saturation, which is achieved in this experimental study using tight pressure-temperature (P-T) control near the hydrate stability boundary. The measured differential pressure across the specimen, methane injection flow rate, and volume of displaced brine are used to calculate the relative permeability by adopting a conventional Buckley-Leverett theory-based interpretation method. Residual brine saturation calculated for the hydrate-bearing specimen is higher than that of hydrate-free specimen, presumably due to decrease in pore size, increase in heterogeneity of solid matrix, and increase in size distribution of solid matrix and pore in the presence of hydrates. Further studies are necessary to represent the results of the unsteady-state flow experiment in HBS with a gas hydrate-dependent relative permeability model.

Describing the pore habit of methane hydrate in sediment matrices is essential for understanding natural distribution of methane hydrate, methane trace (transport and solidification) in the hydrate stability zone, physical properties of hydrate-bearing sediments, and the associated influence on potential gas production. Pore habit visualization in natural media at pore scale even with laboratory synthesized cores has been challenging due to the similar densities of methane hydrate from pore liquid. In this work, we used phase-contrast assisted micro-CT with potassium iodine-doped brine to visualize four phases: sand particles, pore fluid, methane hydrate and methane gas. This study visualizes the pore habit of methane hydrate at various stages including during hydrate formation in excess-gas systems, its evolution after brine injection to replace pore fluid, and hydrate formation in excess-water systems. Hydrate tends to adopt round and smooth surfaces when in contact with water while exhibits relatively angular interfaces when in contact with methane gas. Hydrate formation in excess-gas systems results in a partial cementing and partial mineral-coating pore habit, while hydrate in excess-water systems develops mainly as pore-filling, and locally cementing or mineral-coating where big gas pockets exist at the initial state. Pore liquid replacement from methane gas to brine triggers a shift of hydrate pore habit towards pore-filling. Methane hydrate evolution over time produces bigger hydrate particles but with less contact area with sand particles. The effects of hydrate pore habit become less important as hydrate particle size exceeds the pore size. Additionally, hydrate formation could trap residual methane gas and brine as inclusions.

Mass transport in frozen ground is typically regarded slow. However, a highly permeable path can exist in frozen saline sand if the unfrozen water is interconnected at the pore scale. We therefore should consider when the unfrozen water is connected and how permeable can frozen saline sand be, yet there are few studies. This research utilizes in‐situ X‐ray CT to evaluate unfrozen water connectivity and permeability in frozen saline sand considering effects of initial salt content, temperature, freezing rate, and temperature gradient. Results show that higher initial salt content and/or temperature, both of which results in a higher unfrozen water content, easily maintains unfrozen water connectivity. Rapid freezing minimizes the brine expulsion and permits a higher unfrozen water content hence better connectivity. Permeability in frozen saline sand can be several orders higher than the typically reported value, highlighting the potential presence of rapid mass transport through the connected unfrozen water. Plain Language Summary: Frozen aqueous sandy soils in nature often contain a lot of substances such as dissolved salts, gases, contaminants. Mass migration via unfrozen water is of vital importance to groundwater flow, greenhouse gas emission, even contaminated soil remediation. Permeability determination of unfrozen water is well‐studied in salt‐free soils. Our study shows there can be a highly conductive path in frozen saline sand when the unfrozen water is interconnected, even at a low unfrozen water saturation of 14%. The connectivity of unfrozen water remains at −20°C with an initial salt concentration similar to seawater. Rapid freezing causes better connectivity because less unfrozen water is squeezed out of the frozen sand during ice growth. Permeability in frozen saline sand can be several orders of magnitude higher than the typically reported value. These findings indicate that mass transport in frozen ground, via the connected unfrozen water, can be much more active than previously thought. This study analyzed a hypothetical fixed-index annuity (FIA) contract linked to a 5 percent volatility-controlled index (VCI) and compared its performance with a traditional FIA linked to the S&P 500 Index, the stock benchmark itself, and a corporate bond benchmark. The simulation results showed that the FIA linked to the 5 percent VCI outperformed the traditional FIA, the bond benchmark, and enjoyed a higher sharp ratio than the stock benchmark.
