The factors affecting migrants’ settlement in host cities have been widely discussed, but the impact of housing financial support is still under exploration. This paper explores the effect of the Housing Provident Fund (HPF), which is a highly debated but markedly important housing financial policy in China, on migrants’ settlement intentions. Based on data from the China Migrants Dynamic Survey (CMDS), our results reveal that the HPF significantly improves migrants’ settlement intentions by increasing housing purchase intentions. The robustness test results further show that expanding the coverage of the HPF has a positive effect on urbanization. However, we highlight the conflict between the HPF effects and its specific impact on differentiated levels of coverage. We further discuss its potential challenges, describe a pilot study of a voluntary HPF in China, and offer recommendations for urban reform.

Abstract Testicular microcirculation is closely related to spermatogenic function and seminiferous tubular function. The diagnosis and monitoring of testicular diseases can be associated with testicular microcirculation; however, there are currently no effective non‐invasive methods for super‐resolution imaging of testicular microcirculation. In this study, we introduced state‐of‐the‐art graph‐based tracking with the Kalman motion model algorithm to non‐invasively image human testicular microcirculation for the first time with a regular frame‐rate clinical ultrasound imaging system (37 Hz). Two distinct testicular vessels with an 81 µm separation were resolved in the testicular vasculature, surpassing all other imaging modalities. In a retrospective study, we performed contrast‐enhanced ultrasound examinations(CEUS) and ultrasound localization microscopy (ULM) processing on the included 76 infertile patients and 15 healthy controls from August 2021 to May 2023 and obtained super‐resolution images of testicular microcirculation with sub‐diffraction resolution. Through the results of one‐way analysis of variance tests and receiver operating characteristic analyses, we found that the ULM‐based parameters hold promise as clinical guidance for differentiating between non‐obstructive and obstructive male infertility. PurposeThe purpose of this retrospective study was to compare the therapeutic efficacy and safety of drug-eluting bead transarterial chemoembolization (DEB-TACE) combined with systemic therapy to systemic therapy alone as first-line treatment for unresectable patients with colorectal liver metastases (CRLM).MethodsFrom December 2017 to December 2022, patients with unresectable CRLM who received systemic therapy with or without DEB-TACE as first-line treatment were included in the study. The primary endpoint was progression-free survival (PFS). Secondary endpoints were tumor response, conversion rate and adverse events.ResultsNinety-eight patients were enrolled in this study, including 46 patients who received systemic therapy combined with DEB-TACE (DEB-TACE group) and 52 patients who received systemic therapy alone (control group). The median PFS was elevated in the DEB-TACE group compared with the control group (12.1 months vs 8.4 months, p = 0.008). The disease control rate was increased in the DEB-TACE group compared with the control group (87.0% vs 67.3%, p = 0.022). Overall response rates (39.1% vs 25.0%; p = 0.133) and conversion rate to liver resection (33.8% vs 25.0%; p = 0.290) were no different between the two groups. The multivariate analysis showed that treatment options, size of liver metastasis, number of liver metastasis, synchronous metastases, and extrahepatic metastases were independent prognostic factor of PFS. Further subgroup analyses illustrated that PFS was beneficial with the DEB-TACE group in patients with age ≥ 60, male, left colon, synchronous metastases, bilobar, number of liver metastasis > 5, extrahepatic metastases, non-extrahepatic metastases, CEA level < 5 (ng/ml), and KRAS wild-type. No grade 4 or 5 toxicities related to DEB-TACE procedures were observed.ConclusionIn patients with unresectable CRLM, systemic chemotherapy with DEB-TACE as first-line treatment may improve progression-free survival and disease control rate outcomes over systemic chemotherapy alone with manageable safety profile.

Abstract Electroencephalogram (EEG) is one of the most important bioelectrical signals related to brain activity and plays a crucial role in clinical medicine. Driven by continuously expanding applications, the development of EEG materials and technology has attracted considerable attention. However, systematic analysis of the sustainable development of EEG materials and technology is still lacking. This review discusses the sustainable development of EEG materials and technology. First, the developing course of EEG is introduced to reveal its significance, particularly in clinical medicine. Then, the sustainability of the EEG materials and technology is discussed from two main aspects: integrated systems and EEG electrodes. For integrated systems, sustainability has been focused on the developing trend toward mobile EEG systems and big‐data monitoring/analyzing of EEG signals. Sustainability is related to miniaturized, wireless, portable, and wearable systems that are integrated with big‐data modeling techniques. For EEG electrodes and materials, sustainability has been comprehensively analyzed from three perspectives: performance of different material/structural categories, sustainable materials for EEG electrodes, and sustainable manufacturing technologies. In addition, sustainable applications of EEG have been presented. Finally, the sustainable development of EEG materials and technology in recent decades is summarized, revealing future possible research directions as well as urgent challenges.

ObjectiveTo utilize radiomics analysis on dual-energy CT images of the pancreas to establish a quantitative imaging biomarker for type 2 diabetes mellitus.Materials and methodsIn this retrospective study, 78 participants (45 with type 2 diabetes mellitus, 33 without) underwent a dual energy CT exam. Pancreas regions were segmented automatically using a deep learning algorithm. From these regions, radiomics features were extracted. Additionally, 24 clinical features were collected for each patient. Both radiomics and clinical features were then selected using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) technique and then build classifies with random forest (RF), support vector machines (SVM) and Logistic. Three models were built: one using radiomics features, one using clinical features, and a combined model.ResultsSeven radiomic features were selected from the segmented pancreas regions, while eight clinical features were chosen from a pool of 24 using the LASSO method. These features were used to build a combined model, and its performance was evaluated using five-fold cross-validation. The best classifier type is Logistic and the reported area under the curve (AUC) values on the test dataset were 0.887 (0.73–1), 0.881 (0.715–1), and 0.922 (0.804–1) for the respective models.ConclusionRadiomics analysis of the pancreas on dual-energy CT images offers potential as a quantitative imaging biomarker in the detection of type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Abstract Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are found in many common foods and increase the risk of cancer in humans. This study systematically screened the components that may be related to the formation of PAHs by an excessive addition of 19 amino acids and glucose in the beef patties. Phenylalanine and glucose exhibited the potential as promoters of PAHs, while lysine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, valine, and methionine exhibited excellent potential as inhibitors of PAHs. Subsequently, a chemical model containing phenylalanine and glucose was established to confirm their roles as precursors of PAHs. The formation mechanism of PAHs showed that naphthalene was first formed as a basic structure, and then, PAHs with more rings were further formed through substitution, addition reactions, or intramolecular cyclization reactions. The mitigative effects of four flavonoids on total PAH contents were in the order: kaempferol > naringenin (better for individual PAH) > myricetin > quercetin (contradictory), which suggested that the antioxidant ability or radical scavenging capacity of flavonoids may be one of the pathways for PAH inhibition.

ObjectiveEvidence regarding the effects of particulate matter (PM) pollutants on cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality remains limited in Shanghai, China. Our objective was to thoroughly evaluate associations between PM pollutants and CVD mortality.MethodsDaily data on CVD mortality, PM (PM10 and PM2.5) pollutants, and meteorological variables in Shanghai, China were gathered from 2003 to 2020. We utilized a time-series design with the generalized additive model to assess associations between PM pollutants and CVD mortality. Additionally, we conducted stratified analyses based on sex, age, education, and seasons using the same model.ResultsWe found that PM pollutants had a significant association with CVD mortality during the study period. Specifically, there was a 0.29% (95%CI: 0.14, 0.44) increase in CVD mortality for every 10 μg/m3 rise in a 2-day average (lag01) concentration of PM10. A 0.28% (95% CI: 0.07, 0.49) increase in CVD mortality was associated with every 10 μg/m3 rise in PM2.5 concentration at lag01. Overall, the estimated effects of PM10 and PM2.5 were larger in the warm period compared with the cold period. Furthermore, males and the older adult exhibited greater susceptibility to PM10 and PM2.5 exposure, and individuals with lower education levels experienced more significant effects from PM10 and PM2.5 than those with higher education levels.ConclusionOur findings suggested that PM pollutants have a substantial impact on increasing CVD mortality in Shanghai, China. Moreover, the impacts of air pollution on health may be altered by factors such as season, sex, age, and educational levels.

Brain metastasis (BMs) in small cell lung cancer (SCLC) has a very poor prognosis. This study combined WGCNA with the mfuzz algorithm to identify potential biomarkers in the peripheral blood of patients with BMs. By comparing the significantly differentially expressed genes present in BMs samples, we identified ADCY4 as a target for further study. Expression of ADCY4 was used to cluster mfuzz expression pattern, and 28 hub genes for functional enrichment. PPI network analysis were obtained by comparing with differentially expressed genes in BMs. GABRE, NFE4 and LMOD2 are highly expressed in patients with BMs and have a good diagnostic effect. Immunoinfiltration analysis showed that SCLC patients with BMs may be associated with memory B cells, Tregs, NK cell activation, macrophage M0 and dendritic cell activation. prophytic was used to investigate the ADCY4-mediated anti-tumor drug response. In conclusion, ADCY4 can be used as a promising candidate biomarker for predicting BMs, molecular and immune features in SCLC. PCR showed that ADCY4 expression was increased in NCI–H209 and NCI–H526 SCLC cell lines. In vitro experiments confirmed that the expression of ADCY4 was significantly decreased after anti-PD1 antibody treatment, while the expression of energy metabolism factors were significantly different. This study reveals a potential mechanism by which ADCY4 mediates poor prognosis through energy metabolism -related pathways in SCLC.

Abstract Parkinson’s disease (PD), one of the most devastating neurodegenerative brain disorders, is characterized by the progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra (SN) and deposits of α-synuclein aggregates. Currently, pharmacological interventions for PD remain inadequate. The cell necroptosis executor protein MLKL (Mixed-lineage kinase domain-like) is involved in various diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease and neurodegenerative diseases; however, its precise role in PD remains unclear. Here, we investigated the neuroprotective role of MLKL inhibition or ablation against primary neuronal cells and human iPSC-derived midbrain organoids induced by toxic α-Synuclein preformed fibrils (PFFs). Using a mouse model (Tg-Mlkl −/− ) generated by crossbreeding the SNCA A53T synuclein transgenic mice with MLKL knockout (KO)mice, we assessed the impact of MLKL deficiency on the progression of Parkinsonian traits. Our findings demonstrate that Tg-Mlkl −/− mice exhibited a significant improvement in motor symptoms and reduced phosphorylated α-synuclein expression compared to the classic A53T transgenic mice. Furthermore, MLKL deficiency alleviated tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-positive neuron loss and attenuated neuroinflammation by inhibiting the activation of microglia and astrocytes. Single-cell RNA-seq (scRNA-seq) analysis of the SN of Tg-Mlkl −/− mice revealed a unique cell type-specific transcriptome profile, including downregulated prostaglandin D synthase (PTGDS) expression, indicating reduced microglial cells and dampened neuron death. Thus, MLKL represents a critical therapeutic target for reducing neuroinflammation and preventing motor deficits in PD.

Abstract As a special type of wetland, the new wetland in the coal mining subsidence area is highly sensitive to environmental changes. In recent years, more and more attention has been paid to the studies of soil microbial diversity in newly born wetlands in coal mining subsidence areas. However, there are few reports on the seasonal variation of soil microbial diversity and its relationship with soil physical and chemical properties. In this study, 16S rRNA gene sequencing technology was used to analyze the seasonal changes of soil microbial composition and functional diversity in newly formed wetlands in coal mining subsidence areas, and to determine the seasonal changes of soil nutrient elements and physical and chemical properties in coal mining subsidence areas, so as to analyze the correlation between soil microbial diversity and soil nutrient elements and physical and chemical properties in newly formed wetlands in coal mining subsidence areas. A total of 16,050 OTUs were obtained after sample gene noise reduction. Proteobacteria, Acidobacteriota and Bacteroidota were the highest abundance in the coal mining subsidence area of Jining. The two seasons gathered separately, and temperature (Temp), total phosphorus (TP), available phosphorus (AP), total organic carbon (TOC) and dry matter content (DMC) were the key factors for the seasonal change of soil microbial community in the wetland of the coal mining subsidence area of Jining. The contents of Temp, AP and TP were significantly correlated with the abundance of soil microorganisms in summer subsidence area, while the contents of DMC and TOC were significantly correlated with the abundance of soil microorganisms in winter subsidence area. Soil microbial diversity in coal mining subsidence area was correlated with the seasons. Temp, TP, AP, TOC and DMC were the key factors for the seasonal change of soil microbial community in the wetland of the coal mining subsidence area of Jining.

Inappropriate scheduling plans can result in additional economic losses and the safety of water distribution network (WDN). Optimizing manual experience based scheduling plans can help water utilities rationally allocate water plants and pump stations, ensuring the safety, stability, and economy of the water supply system. However, there is a lack of real-time, rational, and optimized scheduling methods. To address this, we proposed a novel intelligent scheduling framework based on deep learning. In this framework, two neural network models, multi-heads convolutional gated recurrent unit network (MH-CGRU) and multi-head gated recurrent unit network (MH-GRU), can effectively extract key features from the WDNs. Operating data were used as decision variables to predict and generate scheduling orders for water plants and pump stations, respectively. The rationality of the orders is verified by combining a high precision online hydraulic model and the evaluation of the operational status of the WDNs. This system has been deployed in a real WDN and put into practical application. From June to November of 2022, the total adoption rate of all orders reached 96.29%, with the average deviation between predicted and actual control targets being less than 5%, and energy consumption decreased by 3.05% compared to the previous year. HIGHLIGHTS Proposed an optimized, real-time, and secure intelligent control method for water supply networks based on deep learning algorithms.; Presented a data evaluation approach for selecting high-quality samples from monitoring data in the water supply system.; Developed an intelligent verification mechanism that combines a high-precision hydraulic model with scheduling orders for improved control reliability.;

Abstract Background Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a major pathological type of lung cancer. However, its pathogenesis remains largely unclear. MRPL35 is a regulatory subunit of the mitoribosome, which can regulate the assembly of cytochrome c oxidases and plays an important role in the occurrence of NSCLC. Methods The expression of MRPL35 in NSCLC was detected by tissue microarray and immunohistochemistry. H1299 cells were infected with lentivirus to knockdown MRPL35, and the cells were subjected to crystal violet staining to assess the results of colony formation assays. A549 cells were infected by lentiviral particles-expressing shMRPL35 or shControl, and then subcutaneously injected into nude mice. Tumorigenesis in mice was detected by in vivo imaging. The potential pathway of MRPL35 in NSCLC was assessed by Western blotting. Results MRPL35 was over-expressed in NSCLC tissue compared to para-cancerous and normal tissues. Knockdown of MRPL35 suppressed cell proliferation and decreased NSCLC progression both in vitro and in vivo. The possible molecular mechanisms were also clarified, which indicated that MRPL35 could be involved in cell apoptosis and proliferation by modulating the expression levels of CDK1, BIRC5, CHEK1, STMN1 and MCM2. Knockdown of MRPL35 activated p53 signaling pathway and inhibited cell cycle regulation. Conclusions The oncogenic role of MRPL35 in NSCLC was potentially mediated through the cell cycle regulatory genes such as BIRC5, STMN1, CDK1, CHEK1 and MCM2, as well as activation of P53 signaling pathway.

Abstract Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) occurs most commonly after rupture of an aneurysm, resulting in high disability and mortality due to the absence of effective therapy. Its subsequent stage, early brain injury (EBI), promotes the sustainable development of injury in the brain and ultimately leads to poor prognosis. As a new antiepileptic drug, the effect of perampanel on EBI after SAH is unknown. Pyroptosis, a process of inflammatory programmed cell death, has been confirmed in most studies to play a substantial role in aggravating SAH-post EBI. Similarly, oxidative stress is closely involved in neuronal pyroptosis and the pathophysiological mechanism of SAH-post EBI, leading to a devastating outcome for SAH patients. Nonetheless, no studies have been conducted to determine whether perampanel reduces pyroptosis and oxidative stress in the context of SAH-induced EBI. Rat SAH model via endovascular perforation was constructed in this study, to assess the neuroprotective effect of perampanel on SAH-post EBI, and to clarify the possible molecular mechanism. By means of the neurological score, brain edema detection, FJB staining, immunofluorescence, WB, ELISA, and ROS assay, we found that perampanel can improve neuroscores and reduce brain edema and neuronal degeneration at 24 h after SAH; we also found that perampanel reduced oxidative stress, neuronal pyroptosis, and inhibition of the SIRT3-FOXO3α pathway at 24 h after SAH. When 3-TYP, an inhibitor of SIRT3, was administered, the effects of perampanel on the SIRT3-FOXO3a pathway, antioxidant stress, and neuronal pyroptosis were reversed. Taken together, our data indicate that perampanel attenuates oxidative stress and pyroptosis following subarachnoid hemorrhage via the SIRT3/FOXO3α pathway. This study highlights the application value of perampanel in subarachnoid hemorrhage and lays a foundation for clinical research and later transformation of perampanel in SAH.

Enhancing hepatic gluconeogenesis is one of the main modes of meeting the glucose requirement of dairy cows. This study attempted to determine whether the gluconeogenesis precursor propionate had an effect on the expression of the main genes involved in gluconeogenesis in calf hepatocytes and elucidate the associated mechanisms. Calf hepatocytes were obtained from 5 healthy calves (1 d old; 30 to 40 kg) and exposed to 0-, 1-, 2.5-, or 5-mM sodium propionate (NaP), which is known to promote the expression of genes involved in the gluconeogenesis pathway, including fructose 1,6-bisphosphatase, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase, and glucose-6-phosphatase. AbstractObjective Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is rare heterogeneous disorder characterized by red blood cell (RBC) destruction via auto-antibodies, and after RBC is destroyed, proinflammatory danger-associated molecular patterns including extracellular hemoglobin, heme, and iron which causing cell injury. And oxidative stress represents one of the most significant effects of chronic hemolysis. Jianpishengxue keli can improve the symptoms of anemia patients with kidney disease and tumors and are beneficial in promoting recovery from chronic inflammation. Therefore, it is presumed that Jianpishengxue keli can improve the symptoms of AIHA. We aimed to investigate iron metabolism in AIHA and effects of Jianpishengxue keli on AIHA murine model.Methods Nineteen hemolytic episode AIHA patients, 10 remission patients and 10 healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled in this study. Serum hepcidin, ferritin and other related indicators of iron metabolism were measured. Mouse models of AIHA were established and received high, medium, or low doses of Jianpishengxue keli by gavage daily for 14 and 28 days respectively. The level of RBCs, Hb, bilirubin, LDH, hepcidin, and the expression level of hepcidin mRNA, and hepatic ferroportin 1(FPN1) protein were evaluated.Results Serum hepcidin in hemolytic episode AIHA patients and remission patients were significantly higher than that in HCs (p = 0.0083 and p = 0.0473, respectively). Serum ferritin in hemolytic AIHA patients was significantly higher than that in HCs (p = 0.008). Serum transferrin saturation levels are increased in patients with AIHA[ (57.21 ± 8.96) %]. EPO in hemolytic group was higher than that in healthy control (p＜0.05). In AIHA mouse models, IBIL decreased after 14 days of high dose drug intervention. After 28 days, TBIL and IBIL both significantly decreased in all dose groups and LDH significantly decreased in the medium-and high-dose groups. Body weight improved, and the level of RBCs, Hb and hepcidin in the high-dose group returned to normal. After 14 and 28 days of intervention, hepatic hepcidin mRNA in all dose group significantly decreased. Hepatic FPN1 protein which were significantly lower in the AIHA mouse models, increased in all dose groups after drug intervention for 28 days.Conclusion Iron metabolism abnormalities exists in AIHA patients and Jianpishengxue keli can ameliorate hemolysis and improve iron metabolism in AIHA mouse models.KEY MESSAGESIron metabolism abnormalities exists in hemolytic episode AIHA patients. Hepcidin and ferritin levels significantly elevated and also correlated with the severity of AIHA patients. Jianpishengxue keli can ameliorate hemolysis and prompt the recovery of AIHA.

Abstract Enveloped viruses encased within a lipid bilayer membrane are highly contagious and can cause many infectious diseases like influenza and COVID-19, thus calling for effective prevention and inactivation strategies. Here, we develop a diatomic iron nanozyme with lipoxidase-like (LOX-like) activity for the inactivation of enveloped virus. The diatomic iron sites can destruct the viral envelope via lipid peroxidation, thus displaying non-specific virucidal property. In contrast, natural LOX exhibits low antiviral performance, manifesting the advantage of nanozyme over the natural enzyme. Theoretical studies suggest that the Fe-O-Fe motif can match well the energy levels of Fe2 minority β-spin d orbitals and pentadiene moiety π* orbitals, and thus significantly lower the activation barrier of cis,cis-1,4-pentadiene moiety in the vesicle membrane. We showcase that the diatomic iron nanozyme can be incorporated into air purifier to disinfect airborne flu virus. The present strategy promises a future application in comprehensive biosecurity control.

Abstract Background Early detection of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is important in order to improve patient prognosis and survival rate. Methylation sequencing combined with neural networks to identify cell-free DNA (cfDNA) carrying aberrant methylation offers an appealing and non-invasive approach for HCC detection. However, some limitations exist in traditional methylation detection technologies and models, which may impede their performance in the read-level detection of HCC. Methods We developed a low DNA damage and high-fidelity methylation detection method called No End-repair Enzymatic Methyl-seq (NEEM-seq). We further developed a read-level neural detection model called DeepTrace that can better identify HCC-derived sequencing reads through a pre-trained and fine-tuned neural network. After pre-training on 11 million reads from NEEM-seq, DeepTrace was fine-tuned using 1.2 million HCC-derived reads from tumor tissue DNA after noise reduction, and 2.7 million non-tumor reads from non-tumor cfDNA. We validated the model using data from 130 individuals with cfDNA whole-genome NEEM-seq at around 1.6X depth. Results NEEM-seq overcomes the drawbacks of traditional enzymatic methylation sequencing methods by avoiding the introduction of unmethylation errors in cfDNA. DeepTrace outperformed other models in identifying HCC-derived reads and detecting HCC individuals. Based on the whole-genome NEEM-seq data of cfDNA, our model showed high accuracy of 96.2%, sensitivity of 93.6%, and specificity of 98.5% in the validation cohort consisting of 62 HCC patients, 48 liver disease patients, and 20 healthy individuals. In the early stage of HCC (BCLC 0/A and TNM I), the sensitivity of DeepTrace was 89.6 and 89.5% respectively, outperforming Alpha Fetoprotein (AFP) which showed much lower sensitivity in both BCLC 0/A (50.5%) and TNM I (44.7%). Conclusions By combining high-fidelity methylation data from NEEM-seq with the DeepTrace model, our method has great potential for HCC early detection with high sensitivity and specificity, making it potentially suitable for clinical applications. Abstract Botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) shows high lethality and toxicity, marking it as an important biological threat. The only effective post-exposure therapy is botulinum antitoxin; however, such products have great potential for improvement. To prevent or treat BoNT, monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are promising agents. Herein, we aimed to construct a bispecific antibody (termed LUZ-A1-A3) based on the anti-BoNT/A human monoclonal antibodies (HMAb) A1 and A3. LUZ-A1-A3 binds to the Hc and L-HN domains of BoNT/A, displaying potent neutralization activity against BoNT/A (124 × higher than that of HMAb A1 or HMAb A3 alone and 15 × higher than that of the A1 + A3 combination). LUZ-A1-A3 provided effective protection against BoNT/A in an in vivo mouse model. Mice were protected from infection with 500 × LD50 of BoNT/A by LUZ-A1-A3 from up to 7 days before intraperitoneal administration of BoNT/A. We also demonstrated the effective therapeutic capacity of LUZ-A1-A3 against BoNT/A in a mouse model. LUZ-A1-A3 (5 μg/mouse) neutralized 20 × LD50 of BoNT/A at 3 h after intraperitoneal BoNT/A administration and complete neutralized 20 × LD50 of BoNT/A at 0.5 h after intraperitoneal BoNT/A administration. Thus, LUZ-A1-A3 is a promising agent for the pre-exposure prophylaxis and post-exposure treatment of BoNT/A.

Abstract Background Depression and anxiety are frequently coexisted mental illness. The lack of solid objective diagnostic criteria has led to a high rate of suicide. The brain-gut axis bridges the gastrointestinal system with neuropsychiatric disorders. However, it is still not possible to reflect mental disease with gastrointestinal information. The study aimed to explore the auxiliary diagnostic value of gastrointestinal myoelectrical activity in anxiety-depression disorders (ADD) without gastrointestinal disturbance. Methods A natural population cohort from 3 districts in Western China were established. The Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 were used to assess ADD. Gastrointestinal myoelectrical activity of ADD were measured by multi-channel cutaneous electrogastroenterogram (EGEG). Then the parameters of EGEG between ADD and healthy controls were analyzed. Results The average amplitude and response area of intestinal channel in ADD were significantly lower than those of controls (153.49 ± 78.69 vs. 179.83 ± 103.90, 57.27 ± 29.05 vs. 67.70 ± 38.32), which were shown to be protective factors for ADD (OR = 0.944 and 0.844, respectively). Abstract Robust superhydrophobic surfaces with excellent capacities of repelling water and anti-frosting are of importance for many mechanical components. In this work, wear-resistant superhydrophobic surfaces were fabricated by curing a mixture of polyurethane acrylate (PUA) coating and 1H,1H,2H,2H-Perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane (HFTCS) on titanium alloy (TC4) surfaces decorated with micropillars pattern, thus, composite functional surfaces with PUA coating in the valleys around the micropillars pattern of TC4 were achieved. Apparent contact angle on fabricated surfaces could reach 167°. Influences of the geometric parameters of micropillars pattern on the apparent contact angle were investigated, and the corresponding wear-resistant property was compared. Droplet impact and anti-frosting performances on the prepared surfaces were highlighted. An optimized design of surface texture with robust superhydrophobicity, controllable droplet impact, and anti-frosting performances was proposed. This design principle is of promising prospects for fabricating superhydrophobic surfaces in traditional mechanical systems.

Laminated composites have been extensively researched due to their excellent mechanical properties, but their application in superwetting fields has been rarely reported. In this work, the surfaces with extreme wettability were prepared based on laminated composites. The Ti6Al4V/304 stainless steel (304 SS) micro-laminated composites were fabricated by diffusion bonding the Ti6Al4V foils and 304 SS foils with the thickness of 10–50 μm in vacuum. The typical interfacial microstructure and the effect of diffusion temperature on the microstructure were investigated. The bonded interface of joints is mainly composed of β-Ti, Ti2Ni, FeTi, Fe2Ti, Fe–Cr from the Ti6Al4V side to the 304 SS. The effect of diffusion temperature on the microstructure was researched. Based on the prepared Ti6Al4V/304 SS micro-laminated composites, an array structure with micro grooves was fabricated through the simple chemical etching. The 304 SS foils were etched to form grooves, while Ti6Al4V foils still remained as bulges. Due to surface modification and rough morphology, the etched surfaces exhibited the excellent hydrophobicity. Increasing the width and depth of grooves and decreasing the width of bulges led to the higher water contact angles and improved hydrophobicity. The highest water contact angles of 148.3° has been achieved under the conditions of grooves with a width of 50 μm, a depth of 60 μm, and the bulges with a width of 10 μm. The surfaces exhibited nearly superhydrophobicity and performed self-cleaning property. The processing method of this work could expand the application of laminated composite in extreme wettability fields.

Increasing amounts of experimental studies have shown that circular RNAs (circRNAs) play important regulatory roles in human diseases through interactions with related microRNAs (miRNAs). CircRNAs have become new potential disease biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Predicting circRNA-disease association (CDA) is of great significance for exploring the pathogenesis of complex diseases, which can improve the diagnosis level of diseases and promote the targeted therapy of diseases. However, determination of CDAs through traditional clinical trials is usually time-consuming and expensive. Computational methods are now alternative ways to predict CDAs. In this study, a new computational method, named PCDA-HNMP, was designed. For obtaining informative features of circRNAs and diseases, a heterogeneous network was first constructed, which defined circRNAs, mRNAs, miRNAs and diseases as nodes and associations between them as edges. Then, a deep analysis was conducted on the heterogeneous network by extracting meta-paths connecting to circRNAs (diseases), thereby mining hidden associations between various circRNAs (diseases). These associations constituted the meta-path-induced networks for circRNAs and diseases. The features of circRNAs and diseases were derived from the aforementioned networks via mashup. On the other hand, miRNA-disease associations (mDAs) were employed to improve the model's performance. miRNA features were yielded from the meta-path-induced networks on miRNAs and circRNAs, which were constructed from the meta-paths connecting miRNAs and circRNAs in the heterogeneous network. A concatenation operation was adopted to build the features of CDAs and mDAs. Such representations of CDAs and mDAs were fed into XGBoost to set up the model. The five-fold cross-validation yielded an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.9846, which was better than those of some existing state-of-the-art methods. The employment of mDAs can really enhance the model's performance and the importance analysis on meta-path-induced networks shown that networks produced by the meta-paths containing validated CDAs provided the most important contributions.

Macro-segregation in squeeze casting leads to inhomogeneous compositional distribution and degradation of mechanical properties. The distribution and formation mechanism of segregation in squeeze casting baffle were investigated by combining simulation software and experiments. The results showed that the segregation in the baffle was mainly distributed in the abrupt transition region of wall thickness. The evolution of segregation was simulated by the phase-field method to study the formation mechanism of segregation. During the solidification of the casting, pressure is applied to force the metal fluid to convect and complement the shrinkage, and the high solute content metal fluid meets in the wall thickness transition region. Highly brittle precipitated phases with overly dense distribution of segregation areas are easy to cracking during the load loading process, which leads to simultaneous cracking of the matrix through the extension of cracks into the matrix by means of load transfer. The T6 (410 °C × 20h + 200 °C × 8h) heat treatment process can reduce the segregation by dissolving the agglomerated island eutectic tissues into the matrix and then aging them uniformly with granular precipitation. The tensile strength of the castings after T6 treatment increased from 172 MPa (141 MPa at the segregation position) to 245 MPa, and the elongation was 3.3 %.

The oxidation behavior and kinetics of (Zr, Ti)(C, N)–SiC ceramics subjected to a temperature of 850 °C-950 °C (typical operating temperatures range of Generation-IV nuclear reactors) for 1–4 h are investigated via X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and weight gain testing. The results show that the microstructures of the ceramics after oxidation comprises primarily of m-(Zr, Ti)O2, c-(Zr, Ti)O2, and SiO2. After adding Si, the oxidation layer appears as a two-layer structure with both external and internal layers. The oxidation order of (Zr, Ti)(C, N)–SiC ceramics at 850 °C-950 °C is ZrSi > (Zr, Ti)(C, N) > SiC. Unoxidized SiC forms a “core-shell” structure with a dense external layer of SiO2. The dual effect of small SiO2 particles occupying cracks and the “core-shell” structure of SiC–SiO2 withstanding stresses can inhibit the propagation of cracks and reduce the porosity of the oxide layer. The oxidation of Z5T and Z5T5S exhibits linear oxidation kinetics, whereas the oxidation of Z5T10S and Z5T20S results in quasi-parabolic oxidation. By adding Si, the oxidation activation energy of Z5T20S (with the addition of 20 mol% Si) increases by 174 % compared to that of Z5T ceramic, thus improving the oxidation resistance of (Zr, Ti)(C, N)-based ceramics at 850 °C-950 °C.

Abstract A novel tissue-specific functional tissue engineering scaffold for cartilage repair should have a three-dimensional structure, good biosafety and biological activity, and should be able to promote cartilage tissue regeneration. This study aimed to determine the effect of ultrasound-treated collagen/silk fibroin (Col/SF) composite scaffolds with good mechanical properties and high biological activity on cartilage repair. The characteristics of the scaffolds with different Col/SF ratios (7:3, 8:2, and 9:1) were determined by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and porosity, water absorption, and compression tests. In vitro evaluations revealed the biocompatibility of the Col/SF scaffolds. Results suggested that the optimal ratio of Col/SF composite scaffolds was 7:3. The Col/SF scaffolds induced adipose-derived stem cells to undergo chondrogenic differentiation under chondrogenic culture conditions. The efficiency of Col/SF scaffolds for cartilage regeneration applications was further evaluated using an in vivo model of full-thickness articular cartilage defects in New Zealand rabbits. The Col/SF scaffolds effectively promoted osteochondral regeneration as evidenced by macroscopic, histological, and immunohistochemical evaluation. The study demonstrates that ultrasound-treated Col/SF scaffolds show great potential for repairing cartilage defects.

Abstract Purpose There is a significant risk of DVT after TKA. We aim to evaluate the potential risk factors for postoperative DVT in the lower extremities in TKA patients over 60 years of age and provide a reference for the effective prevention of DVT. Methods This retrospective study included patients older than 60 who underwent TKA surgery in our hospital from May 2015 to May 2022 and compared and analyzed patients' personal characteristics and clinical data with or without postoperative DVT. Logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the potential risk factors for DVT after TKA. The sensitivity and specificity of each risk factor in the diagnosis of DVT were compared by the ROC curve, and the value of this model in the diagnosis of DVT was further investigated using a multivariable combined diagnosis ROC curve model. Abstract Over the past few years, the rapid development of machine learning (ML) models for weather forecasting has led to state-of-the-art ML models that have superior performance compared to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF)’s high-resolution forecast (HRES), which is widely considered as the world’s best physics-based weather forecasting system. Specifically, ML models have outperformed HRES in 10-day forecasts with a spatial resolution of 0.25∘. However, the challenge remains in mitigating the accumulation of forecast errors for longer effective forecasts, such as achieving comparable performance to the ECMWF ensemble in 15-day forecasts. Despite various efforts to reduce accumulation errors, such as implementing autoregressive multi-time step loss, relying on a single model has been found to be insufficient for achieving optimal performance in both short and long lead times. Therefore, we present FuXi, a cascaded ML weather forecasting system that provides 15-day global forecasts at a temporal resolution of 6 hours and a spatial resolution of 0.25∘. FuXi is developed using 39 years of the ECMWF ERA5 reanalysis dataset. The performance evaluation demonstrates that FuXi has forecast performance comparable to ECMWF ensemble mean (EM) in 15-day forecasts. FuXi surpasses the skillful forecast lead time achieved by ECMWF HRES by extending the lead time for Z500 from 9.25 to 10.5 days and for T2M from 10 to 14.5 days. Moreover, the FuXi ensemble is created by perturbing initial conditions and model parameters, enabling it to provide forecast uncertainty and demonstrating promising results when compared to the ECMWF ensemble.

The pollution caused by microplastics (MPs) has gained global attention due to their potential risks to organisms and human health. The process of photo-aging, which plays a crucial role in the transformation of MPs in aquatic environments, has the potential to influence the ecological risk posed by these particles. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a prevalent photosensitizer in surface waters that has been shown to facilitate the transformation of various organic compounds by generating reactive oxygen species under light irradiation. The present study investigated the influence of humic acid (HA), a typical component of DOM, on the photo-aging process of polyvinyl chloride MPs (PVC-MPs), using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, as well as assessing the resulting ecological risk through bioassays. The results revealed that the presence of HA enhanced the photo-aging of PVC-MP. Moreover, the leachate exhibited higher acute and genetic toxicity under light irradiation when compared to dark conditions. Notably, the presence of HA significantly increased the toxicity of the leachate, emphasizing the need to consider the impact of DOM when assessing the ecological risk of MPs in surface waters. These findings contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the potential risks associated with microplastic pollution in natural environments. HIGHLIGHTS PVC-MP leachates exhibited higher acute and genetic toxicity under irradiation in the presence of dissolved organic matter.; A bioassay provided a cost-effective means to assess the ecological risks posed.;

Introduction: Osteoporosis is the most common bone disorder where the hyperactive osteoclasts represent the leading role during the pathogenesis. Targeting hyperactive osteoclasts is currently the primary therapeutic strategy. However, concerns about the long-term efficacy and side effects of current frontline treatments persist. Alternative therapeutic agents are still needed. Objectives: Obacunone (OB) is a small molecule with a broad spectrum of biological activities, particularly antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. This study aims to examine OB’s therapeutic potential on osteoporosis and explore the rudimentary mechanisms. Methods: Osteoclast formation and osteoclastic resorption assays were carried out to examine OB’s inhibitory effects in vitro, followed by the in-vivo studies of OB’s therapeutic effects on ovariectomy-induced osteoporotic preclinical model. To further study the underlying mechanisms, mRNA sequencing and analysis were used to investigate the changes of downstream pathways. The molecular targets of OB were predicted, and in-silico docking analysis was performed. Ligand-target binding was verified by surface plasmon resonance (SPR) assay and Western Blotting assay. Results: The results indicated that OB suppressed the formation of osteoclast and its resorptive function in vitro. Mechanistically, OB interacts with macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) which attenuates receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) ligand (RANKL)-induced signaling pathways, including reactive oxygen species (ROS), NF-κB pathway, and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs). These effects eventually caused the diminished expression level of the master transcriptional factor of osteoclastogenesis, nuclear factor of activated T cells 1 (NFATc1), and its downstream osteoclast-specific proteins. Furthermore, our data revealed that OB alleviated estrogen deficiency-induced osteoporosis by targeting MIF and thus inhibiting hyperactive osteoclasts in vivo. Conclusion: These results together implicated that OB may represent as a therapeutic candidate for bone disorders caused by osteoclasts, such as osteoporosis.

From 26 November to 1 December 2022, intense cold air masses swept across China from northwest to south, resulting in a nationwide cold air outbreak (CAO) case characterised by drastic and sudden temperature drops with rain, snow and strong winds. The physical processes that dominate the intensification of the cold air masses during this CAO event remain unclear. In this study, the evolution of the CAO case, which is indicated by the dry static energy (DSE), is investigated using a novel approach in the framework of Lagrangian backtracking. The dominant processes can be identified by decomposing the DSE change into four diabatic heating terms due to shortwave radiation, longwave radiation, latent heat and turbulent processes. Overall, in this case, most of the cold air parcels originated from the east of Novaya Zemlya and crossed Central Siberia before reaching China. Thus, these air parcels mainly manifested on the northwest‒southeast path. The duration of the cold air intensification differed between subregions. The cold air parcels experienced long cooling periods (approximately 9 d) before reaching northern China (i.e. Northwest, North and Northeast China), whilst the southern parts (i.e. Central, East and South China) underwent relatively short cooling periods (6–8 d). Accordingly, the cold air affecting northern China is more intense than that affecting the southern parts, especially for East and South China. For all six subregions, longwave radiative cooling is identified as the dominant contributor to the cold air intensification, and the latent heat processes as the secondary contributor. The weakening of cold air parcels as they approach and pass over these regions is driven by turbulent processes and shortwave heating. Central Siberia and Lake Baikal are identified as key areas for the intensification of cold air passing over both regions. In addition, air parcels affecting Northwest China are intensely cooled as they pass over the Junggar Basin, while the North China Plain is a key area for cooling air parcels reaching Central, East and South China. From a Lagrangian perspective, these findings provide insights into the physical processes driving the behaviour of cold air parcels, which would help understand the mechanisms involved in the past changes and future projections in CAOs.

Abstract The electric field imposes a significant effect on ice accretion on the insulator. The impact of an AC electric field on insulator icing in an artificial climate chamber has been addressed. Compared with AC, DC electric field exerts an attraction on supercooled water droplets, which is more detrimental to the power system. Moreover, the icing on energised insulators is rarely studied in the natural environment. In the present research, an electrical, fluid coupled‐field simulation was carried out on the insulator. The force characteristics and motion deviation features of water droplets at different positive DC electric field strengths were studied. On this basis, rime icing on the insulator energised with different positive DC voltages was investigated in the field. Results show that the charged droplet shifts along the electric field line under a positive DC voltage. The deviation degree of the droplet increases with the increment of the voltage and droplet size and decreases with an increase in wind speed. As the voltage rises, the surface roughness, icing amount and icing length of rime ice‐covered insulator increase. Consequently, compared with that without energisation, the local collision coefficient, icing amount and icing length increase by 17.6%, 46.4% and 63.9%, respectively, under a 40 kV DC voltage.

Abstract The prevalence of obesity and overweight is steadily rising, posing a significant global challenge for humanity. The fundamental cause of obesity and overweight lies in the abnormal accumulation of adipose tissue. While numerous regulatory factors related to fat deposition have been identified in previous studies, a considerable number of regulatory mechanisms remain unknown. tRNA-derived small RNAs (tsRNAs), a novel class of non-coding RNAs, have emerged as significant regulators in various biological processes. In this study, we obtained small RNA sequencing data from subcutaneous white adipose tissue and omental white adipose tissue of lean and obese pigs. In addition, we similarly obtained tsRNAs profiles from scapular brown adipose tissue (BAT), inguinal white adipose tissue (iWAT) and epigonadal white adipose tissue (eWAT) of normal mice. Finally, we successfully identified a large number of expressed tsRNAs in each tissue type and identified tsRNAs conserved in different adipose tissues of pigs and mice. These datasets will be a valuable resource for elucidating the epigenetic mechanisms of fat deposition.

Abstract Object Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) is a bacterium that can cause zoonoses by aerosol transmission. Tuberculosis (TB) caused by MTB heavily burdens world public health security. Developing efficient, specific, convenient, and inexpensive MTB assays are essential for preventing and controlling TB. Methods In this study, we established a specific detection method for MTB using the Clustered Regularly Interspersed Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR) system, combined with recombinase mediated isothermal nucleic acid amplification (RAA) to improve the sensitivity of the detection system and achieve “two-level” amplification of the detection signal. The sensitivity and specificity of RAA combined with the CRISPR/Cas system were analyzed. Using BACTEC 960 culture as the gold standard for detecting MTB, we established the TB-CRISPR technique by testing 504 samples from patients with suspected TB. Results MTB H37Ra could be seen as low as 3.13 CFU/mL by the CRISPR-Cas12a system targeting IS6110. With BACTEC960 culture (120 positives and 384 negatives) as the gold standard, the sensitivity of the TB-CRISPR technique was 0.883 (0.809–0.932), and the specificity was 0.940 (0.910–0.961). According to the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, the area under the curve (AUC) reached 0.944 (0.914–0.975) within 95% CI. The positive likelihood ratio (PLR) was 14.747 (9.870-22.035), and the negative likelihood ratio (NLR) was 0.124 (0.076–0.203). The positive predictive value (PPV) was 0.822 (0.742–0.881), and the negative predictive value (NPV) was 0.963 (0.937–0.979). Conclusion TB-CRISPR plays an essential role in the molecular diagnosis of TB. The whole detection time is less than 1.5 h. It is easy to operate and does not need complex instruments. It is of great significance for the rapid detection of MTB and the clinical diagnosis of TB.

Abstract Depression is the most prevalent psychiatric disorder worldwide and remains incurable; however, there is little research on its prevention. The leading cause of depression is stress, and music has been hypothesized to alleviate stress. To examine the potential beneficial effects of music on stress and depression, we subjected mice to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) during the day and music at night. Strikingly, our results indicated that music completely prevented CUMS-induced depression and anxiety-like behaviors in mice, as assessed by the open field, tail suspension, sucrose preference, novelty suppressed feeding, and elevated plus maze tests. We found that listening to music restored serum corticosterone levels in CUMS mice, which may contribute to the beneficial effects of music on the mouse brain, including the restoration of BDNF and Bcl-2 levels. Furthermore, listening to music prevented CUMS-induced oxidative stress in the serum, prefrontal cortex, and hippocampus of mice. Moreover, the CUMS-induced inflammatory responses in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus of mice were prevented by listening to music. Taken together, we have demonstrated for the first time in mice experiments that listening to music prevents stress-induced depression and anxiety-like behaviors in mice. Music may restore hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis homeostasis, preventing oxidative stress, inflammation, and neurotrophic factor deficits, which had led to the observed phenotypes in CUMS mice.

Abstract Background There are some gaps between the training of drug information service competencies for medical staff and drug information patients need in China. Objective To investigate drug information patients obtained and need for further providing directions for the training of drug information service competencies among medical staff in China from patients’ perspectives. Methods A face-to-face nationwide survey was conducted using a stratified sampling method. Data were analyzed descriptively using frequencies, percentages and mean. Several subgroup analyses using Chi-square tests were conducted to identify patients’ need for drug information in China. Results A total of 1994 questionnaires from medical institutions in China were returned. Most of the drug information obtained by patients came from physicians, and different types of drug information were important to patients. Additionally, patients had different needs for drug information due to age, gender, diagnosis and treatment status, and education level. Conclusions The training of medical staff needs to increase the presence of nurses and pharmacists in drug information services, enhance the awareness of “patient-centered” services, and improve the ability to provide information services specific to the characteristics of patients.

Abstract Background and objectives Dexmedetomidine (DEX) is widely used in clinical sedation which has little effect on cardiopulmonary inhibition, however the mechanism remains to be elucidated. The basal forebrain (BF) is a key nucleus that controls sleep-wake cycle. The horizontal limbs of diagonal bundle (HDB) is one subregions of the BF. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the possible mechanism of DEX is through the α2 adrenergic receptor of BF (HDB). Methods In this study, we investigated the effects of DEX on the BF (HDB) by using whole cell patch clamp recordings. The threshold stimulus intensity, the inter-spike-intervals (ISIs) and the frequency of action potential firing in the BF (HDB) neurons were recorded by application of DEX (2 µM) and co-application of a α2 adrenergic receptor antagonist phentolamine (PHEN) (10 µM). Results DEX (2 µM) increased the threshold stimulus intensity, inhibited the frequency of action potential firing and enlarged the inter-spike-interval (ISI) in the BF (HDB) neurons. These effects were reversed by co-application of PHEN (10 µM). Conclusion Taken together, our findings revealed DEX decreased the discharge activity of BF (HDB) neuron via α2 adrenergic receptors.

Abstract Objectives This study aimed to develop and validate radiomics models on the basis of computed tomography (CT) and clinical features for the prediction of pulmonary metastases (MT) in patients with Ewing sarcoma (ES) within 2 years after diagnosis. Materials and methods A total of 143 patients with a histopathological diagnosis of ES were enrolled in this study (114 in the training cohort and 29 in the validation cohort). The regions of interest (ROIs) were handcrafted along the boundary of each tumor on the CT and CT-enhanced (CTE) images, and radiomic features were extracted. Six different models were built, including three radiomics models (CT, CTE and ComB models) and three clinical-radiomics models (CT_clinical, CTE_clinical and ComB_clinical models). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), and accuracy were calculated to evaluate the different models, and DeLong test was used to compare the AUCs of the models. Results Among the clinical risk factors, the therapeutic method had significant differences between the MT and non-MT groups (P＜0.01). The six models performed well in predicting pulmonary metastases in patients with ES, and the ComB model (AUC: 0.866/0.852 in training/validation cohort) achieved the highest AUC among the six models. However, no statistically significant difference was observed between the AUC of the models. Conclusions In patients with ES, clinical-radiomics model created using radiomics signature and clinical features provided favorable ability and accuracy for pulmonary metastases prediction.

Along with the rapid development of renewable energy (RE), a critical issue regarding the adequate accommodation of RE should be given careful attention. This paper proposes a novel evaluation method of the hosting capacity of multiple renewable energy stations (MRES) accessed into the power system. Firstly, the node-system short-circuit ratio is specially defined, and the impacts of accommodating the MRES on the node voltage strength are considered. Then, the evaluation model is established by comprehensively considering the MRES hosting capacity and the node-system short-circuit ratio, and the system power and node voltage constraints are implemented. Furthermore, the improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) algorithm is adopted to address the designed model-solving problem. Using MATLAB, the effectiveness of the proposed evaluation method is validated in the IEEE-39 node system with MRES. The computation result of the objective function proves the suggested IPSO algorithm outperforms the traditional PSO in finding the optimal solution for the MRES hosting capacity in the system. The theoretical and numerical analysis methods are consistent, and the findings show that the proposed approach can obtain the maximum allowable capacity of the MRES while ensuring the safe and stable operation of the system.

The soil beneath buildings constructed in cold regions is affected by frost heave, causing the walls to crack and even the buildings to incline and collapse. Therefore, predicting the frost heave when subjected to overburden pressure is crucial for engineering buildings in cold areas. Utilizing the conservation equation of mass, Darcy’s equation, and the assumption that the pore water pressure at the top of a frozen fringe, denoted as uw, during the quasi-steady state can be approximately estimated using the Clapeyron equation, a quasi-steady frost heave rate model considering the overburden pressure was proposed. This study considered the difference in pore water pressure within the frozen fringe, which causes water to move from the unfrozen zone to the ice lens, where it subsequently accumulates and freezes into ice. The pore water pressure at the bottom of the frozen fringe, denoted as uu, can be estimated using the soil water characteristic curve (SWCC). The thickness of the frozen fringe was determined using the freezing temperature, segregation temperature, and temperature gradient. The segregation temperature was determined using the two-point method. Additionally, the model suggested that, when uw = uu, the movement of water stopped, leading to the end of frost heave. To validate the proposed model, three existing frost-heaving experiments were analyzed. The findings demonstrated that the estimated rates of frost heave of the samples closely matched the experimental data. Additionally, external pressure delayed water migration. This study can offer theoretical support for building engineering in cold regions.

There is extensive current interest in electronic topology in correlated settings. In strongly correlated systems, contours of Green's function zeros may develop in frequency-momentum space, and their role in correlated topology has increasingly been recognized. However, whether and how the zeros contribute to electronic properties is a matter of uncertainty. Here we address the issue in an exactly solvable model for a Mott insulator. We show that the Green's function zeros contribute to several physically measurable correlation functions in a way that does not run into inconsistencies. In particular, the physical properties remain robust to chemical potential variations up to the Mott gap, as it should be based on general considerations. Our work sets the stage for further understandings of the rich interplay among topology, symmetry, and strong correlations.

Hawthorn (Crataegus pinnatifida Bunge) has been highlighted as an excellent source of a variety of bioactive polymers, which has attracted increasing research interest. Pectin, as a kind of soluble dietary fiber in hawthorn, is mainly extracted by hot water extraction and ultrasonic or enzymatic hydrolysis and is then extensively used in food, pharmaceutical, and nutraceutical industries. Numerous studies have shown that hawthorn pectin and its derived oligosaccharides exhibit a wide range of biological activities, such as antioxidant activity, hypolipidemic and cholesterol-reducing effects, antimicrobial activity, and intestinal function modulatory activity. As discovered, the bioactivities of hawthorn pectin and its derived oligosaccharides were mainly contributed by structural features and chemical compositions and were highly associated with the extraction methods. Additionally, hawthorn pectin is a potential resource for the development of emulsifiers and gelling agents, food packaging films, novel foods, and traditional medicines. This review provides a comprehensive summary of current research for readers on the extraction techniques, functional characteristics, structure–activity relationship, and applications in order to provide ideas and references for the investigation and utilization of hawthorn pectin and its derived oligosaccharides. Further research and development efforts are imperative to fully explore and harness the potential of hawthorn pectin-derived oligosaccharides in the food and medicine fields.

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivation using direct seeding is susceptible to chilling stress, particularly during seed germination and early seedling growth in the early season of a double cropping system. Alternatively, seed priming with various plant growth-promoting hormones is an effective technique to promote rapid and uniform emergence under chilling stress. Therefore, we evaluated the impact of gibberellin A3 (GA3) and brassinolide (BR) priming on rice seed emergence, examining their proteomic responses under low-temperature conditions. Results indicated that GA3 and BR increased the seed germination rate by 22.67% and 7.33% at 72 h and 35% and 15% at 96 h compared to the control (CK), respectively. Furthermore, proteomic analysis identified 2551, 2614, and 2592 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in GA, BR, and CK, respectively. Among them, GA exhibited 84 upregulated and 260 downregulated DEPs, while BR showed 112 upregulated and 102 downregulated DEPs, and CK had 123 upregulated and 81 downregulated DEPs. Notably, under chilling stress, both GA3 and BR are involved in peroxide metabolism, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, and inositol phosphate metabolism, enhancing antioxidant capacity and providing energy substances for germination. In addition, GA3 triggers the specific regulation of stress responsive protein activation, GTP activation, and ascorbic acid biosynthesis and promotes the stability and integrity of cell membranes, as well as the synthesis of cell walls, providing physical defense for seeds to resist low temperatures. At the same time, BR triggers specific involvement in ribosome synthesis and amino acid synthesis, promoting biosynthetic ability and metabolic regulation to maintain plant life activities under low-temperature stress. Furthermore, the various genes’ expression (OsJ_16716, OsPAL1, RINO1) confirmed GA3 and BR involved in peroxide metabolism, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, and inositol phosphate metabolism, enhancing antioxidant capacity and providing energy substances for germination. This study provides valuable insights into how rice seed embryo responds to and tolerates chilling stress with GA3 seed priming.

In the context of the increasing frequency of urban flooding disasters caused by extreme weather, the accurate and timely identification and monitoring of urban flood risks have become increasingly important. This article begins with a bibliometric analysis of the literature on urban flood monitoring and identification, revealing that since 2017, this area has become a global research hotspot. Subsequently, it presents a systematic review of current mainstream urban flood monitoring technologies, drawing from both traditional and emerging data sources, which are categorized into sensor-based monitoring (including contact and non-contact sensors) and big data-based monitoring (including social media data and surveillance camera data). By analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of each technology and their different research focuses, this paper points out that current research largely emphasizes more “intelligent” monitoring technologies. However, these technologies still have certain limitations, and traditional sensor monitoring techniques retain significant advantages in practical applications. Therefore, future flood risk monitoring should focus on integrating multiple data sources, fully leveraging the strengths of different data sources to achieve real-time and accurate monitoring of urban flooding.

Biochar is widely used to maintain crop yields and the sustainability of agroecosystems due to its characteristics. However, its effect on vegetable yield and quality in southern acidic soils has not been fully elucidated. The effects of two kinds of biochar application rates (3 t ha−1 and 12 t ha−1) on the nutrient availability, nutrient absorption, yield, and fruit quality of sandy acid oxide soil in South China were studied in a 2-year field experiment using two varieties of wax gourd (Tiezhu No. 2 and Dadao). The results showed that optimized fertilization (OPT, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium were reduced by 20.0%, 20.6%, and 21.1%, respectively) did not reduce the yield of the different varieties of wax gourd compared to FP (farmer practice). On the basis of the OPT treatment, the application of biochar increased the yield of Tiezhu No. 2 and Dadao wax gourd by 16.0–27.3% and 7.7–13.3%, respectively. The increase in yield was attributed to the improvement in soil organic carbon content which increased by 4.5–19.7%, nutrient effectiveness (NO3−-N and Olsen-P content enhanced by 23.7–27.0% and 15.3–23.4% in Tiezhu No. 2), and nutrient uptake (N, P, K, Ca, and Mg accumulation increased significantly by 21.1%, 46.1%, 36.8%, 25.7%, and 31.9%, respectively) by the plant after the biochar application. Different types of biochar also have some differences in these three aspects. Specifically, under the same dosage, rice biochar has a more significant effect on increasing the yield of winter melon, and has a better effect on the improvement of soil physical and chemical properties, while sawdust biochar has a more significant effect on nutrient absorption. In addition, the commercial quality, namely hardness and glossiness, and the nutritional quality, namely soluble sugar, soluble protein, VC content, and sugar–acid ratio of wax gourd fruits, were significantly improved after the biochar application. In summary, biochar application on acidic soils in South China could achieve a win–win situation in terms of increasing soil nutrient effectiveness to improve vegetable yield and quality while reducing chemical fertilizer.

Fruit weight is an important agronomic trait in pepper production and is closely related to yield. At present, many quantitative trait loci (QTL) related to fruit weight have been found in pepper; however, the genes affecting fruit weight remain unknown. We analyzed the fruit weight-related quantitative traits in an intraspecific Capsicum annuum cross between the cultivated species blocky-type pepper, cv. Qiemen, and the bird pepper accession, “129−1” (Capsicum annuum var. glatriusculum), which was the wild progenitor of C. annuum. Using the QTL-seq combined with the linkage-based QTL mapping approach, QTL detection was performed; and two major effects of QTL related to fruit weight, qFW2.1 and qFW3.1, were identified on chromosomes 2 and 3. The qFW2.1 maximum explained 12.28% of the phenotypic variance observed in two F2 generations, with the maximum LOD value of 11.02, respectively; meanwhile, the qFW3.1 maximum explained 15.50% of the observed phenotypic variance in the two F2 generations, with the maximum LOD value of 11.36, respectively. qFW2.1 was narrowed down to the 1.22 Mb region using homozygous recombinant screening from BC2S2 and BC2S3 populations, while qFW3.1 was narrowed down to the 4.61Mb region. According to the transcriptome results, a total of 47 and 86 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the candidate regions of qFW2.1 and qFW3.1 were identified. Further, 19 genes were selected for a qRT-PCR analysis based on sequence difference combined with the gene annotation. Finally, Capana02g002938 and Capana02g003021 are the most likely candidate genes for qFW2.1, and Capana03g000903 may be a candidate gene for qFW3.1. Taken together, our results identified and fine-mapped two major QTL for fruit weight in pepper that will facilitate marker-assistant breeding for the manipulation of yield in pepper.

Follicle development refers to the process in which the follicles in the ovary gradually develop from the primary stage to a mature state, and most primary follicles fail to develop normally, without forming a dense granular cell layer and cell wall, which is identified as atretic follicles. Granulosa cells assist follicle development by producing hormones and providing support, and interference in the interaction between granulosa cells and oocytes may lead to the formation of atretic follicles. Ferroptosis, as a non-apoptotic form of death, is caused by cells accumulating lethal levels of iron-dependent phospholipid peroxides. Healthy follicles ranging from 4 to 5 mm were randomly divided into two groups: a control group (DMSO) and treatment group (10 uM of ferroptosis inducer erastin). Each group was sequenced after three repeated cultures for 24 h. We found that ferroptosis was associated with atretic follicles and that the in vitro treatment of healthy follicles with the ferroptosis inducer erastin produced a phenotype similar to that of atretic follicles. Overall, our study elucidates that tRF-1:30-Gly-GCC-2 is involved in the apoptosis and ferroptosis of GCs. Mechanistically, tRF-1:30-Gly-GCC-2 inhibits granulosa cell proliferation and promotes ferroptosis by inhibiting Mitogen-activated protein kinase 1 (MAPK1). tRF-1:30-Gly-GCC-2 may be a novel molecular target for improving the development of atretic follicles in ovarian dysfunction. In conclusion, our study provides a new perspective on the pathogenesis of granulosa cell dysfunction and follicular atresia.

Exploring species diversity along elevational gradients is important for understanding the underlying mechanisms. Our study focused on analyzing the species diversity of fungal communities and their subcommunities at different trophic and taxonomic levels across three high mountains of the Korean Peninsula, each situated in a different climatic zone. Using high-throughput sequencing, we aimed to assess fungal diversity patterns and investigate the primary environmental factors influencing fungal diversity. Our results indicate that soil fungal diversity exhibits different elevational distribution patterns on different mountains, highlighting the combined effects of climate, soil properties, and geographic topology. Notably, the total and available phosphorus contents in the soil emerged as key determinants in explaining the differences in diversity attributed to soil properties. Despite the varied responses of fungal diversity to elevational gradients among different trophic guilds and taxonomic levels, their primary environmental determinants remained remarkably consistent. In particular, total and available phosphorus contents showed significant correlations with the diversity of the majority of the trophic guilds and taxonomic levels. Our study reveals the absence of a uniform diversity pattern along elevational gradients, underscoring the general sensitivity of fungi to soil conditions. By enriching our understanding of fungal diversity dynamics, this research enhances our comprehension of the formation and maintenance of elevational fungal diversity and the response of microbial communities in mountain ecosystems to climate change. This study provides valuable insights for future ecological studies of similar biotic communities.

Graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) have significant potential as reinforcement agents in metallic materials. Understanding the interfacial structure between GNPs and an aluminum matrix (AlM) is crucial for this composite (GNPs/AlMC) design and application. Studies on the effects of heat treatment on the interfacial character and its influence on mechanical properties at the atomic scale are, therefore, of high importance. This study presents molecular dynamics simulations investigating the effects of heat treatment on the interfacial structural evolution between GNPs and AlM and how such behavior tunes mechanical performance. The results show that the number of interfacial bonds increases significantly when the heat treatment temperature reaches 900 K, below which it stays at low level. Compared with the heat treatment temperature, the pressure has less effect on the interfacial bonds of GNPs/AlMCs. Moreover, defective GNPs with pores at certain heat treatment temperatures promote the formation of Al-C bonds at the interface and improve the mechanical properties of GNPs/AlMCs. These findings underscore the potential for utilizing heat treatment and defect engineering to improve interfacial bonding and achieve improved mechanical performance in GNPs/AlMCs.

Aerospace-grade SRAM-based field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) used in space applications are highly susceptible to single event effects, leading to soft errors in FPGAs. Additionally, as FPGAs scale up, the difficulty of correcting soft errors also increases. This paper proposes that performing soft error sensitivity analysis on FPGAs can help target the more sensitive areas for detection and correction, thereby improving the efficiency of soft error repair. Firstly, in accordance with the dual-layer architecture of SRAM-based FPGAs, methods for the soft error sensitivity analysis of FPGA application layer resources and configuration bitstreams are reviewed. Subsequently, based on the analysis results, it also covers corresponding application layer memory scrubbing and configuration scrubbing techniques. A prospective look at emerging soft error mitigation technologies is discussed at the end of this review, supporting the development of highly reliable aerospace-grade SRAM-based FPGAs.
