The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in bio-potential in the stomach meridians of 20 normal healthy control subjects (NHC) and 20 patients with gastric disease (PGD). We measured changes in potential between ST-39 and ST-37 on the stomach meridian in response to invasive insertion of a needle at ST-36. The response patterns of NHC were regular in both the left and right meridians, whereas the response patterns of PGD were irregular. The potential of the NHC was significantly higher than that of the PGD group. The potential values in the left and right meridians of NHC were the same. However, the potential in the right meridian was significantly higher than that in the left meridian of PGD (p < 0.001). This study indicates that there may be changes in Qi or in the electrical properties of meridians according to health status, reflected in the regularity of the response to acupuncture or in the level of potential along meridians. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between several menstrual characteristics and Yin-Yang, using the traditional Korean Sasang typology in 565 female college students. Using the questionnaire for the Sasang Constitution Classification, which consists of 121 forced-choice items, subjects were classified into three groups: So-Yang (small Yang, n=194), Tae-Eum (large Yin, n=164) and So-Eum (small Yin, n=207). Tae-Eum-type subjects showed significantly higher body mass index (BMI) values than other types. There was also a significant difference in menstrual duration between the Tae-Eum and So-Eum groups. However, there were no differences in the cycle or pattern of menstruation, or in the amount of menstrual blood among the groups. There were also no significant differences in the menstrual variables between Yin and Yang subjects. In conclusion, our results regarding the relationship between menstrual cycle and Yin-Yang types are inconsistent with traditional theory. Therapy using the acupuncture meridian system is an important part of traditional Chinese medicine. The purpose of this study was to investigate the electrical conduction properties of the meridians. The current conduction and potential profiles were compared after switching the current direction in the Hegu (LI-4) and Quchi (LI- 11) meridians and over a non-acupuncture point 1 cm from Quchi (LI-11) in 20 healthy subjects. Both meridians demonstrated significantly higher conductivity between Hegu (LI-4) and Quchi (LI-11) than between Hegu (LI-4) and the non-acupuncture point. The direction of current, peak frequency and absolute potential values in the direction Hegu (LI-4) to Quchi (LI-11) differed significantly from those in the direction Quchi (LI-11) to Hegu (LI-4). These results suggest that the conducting pathways are stronger in the meridians than in the non-meridians and that preferential conduction directions exist between two acupuncture points. The midday--midnight law is a well-known empirical law in Oriental medicine stating that the circadian rhythm of internal organs influences their paired organs according to the time of day. However, there has been little research to test the purported relationship between the time of day and organ function. The purpose of this preliminary study was to investigate whether the midday--midnight law applies to the meridian activity and the electrical conduction properties of the acupuncture points. We used the digital readout instrument (MERIDIAN) to measure electrical conduction properties at 12 acupuncture points corresponding to the 12 meridians at four times: 12:00, 14:00, 22:00, and 24:00 hours. There were no significant differences in the electrical current values measured at the four times in any meridian. However, the mean current values of 12 acupuncture points changed significantly over time (P < 0.0001). The mean current values were significantly higher at 14:00 (P <0.001), 22:00, and 24:00 hours (P < 0.001) than at 12:00 hours. The highest current value occurred at 22:00 hours and was significantly higher than 24:00 hours (P < 0.05). Although these do not conclusively support the traditional midday--midnight theory, our data suggest the existence of some type of daily variability in electrical current. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Heart rate variability (HRV) was compared in 30 subjects receiving external Qi therapy (EQT) or placebo control therapy, in a crossover design experiment. Subjects who received the EQT reported more pleasant and calm emotions than did the placebo group. Qi therapy reduced the heart rate and increased HRV as indicated by a reduced low frequency/high frequency power ratio of HRV. With nonlinear analysis, the Poincare plot index of HRV and approximate entropy was greater in the EQT group than in the control group. These findings suggest that EQT stabilizes the sympathovagal function and cardiac autonomic nervous system by inducing more positive emotions than the placebo therapy. Acupuncture therapy is based on the principle of restoring equilibrium of the body's energy state by regulating the flow of Qi in the corresponding meridians and acupoints. The purpose of this study was to determine whether bio-energy transfer occurs during acupuncture of the meridians. We treated 20 normal healthy subjects with acupuncture and measured changes in the direct current (DC) potential between the stomach meridian points ST-39 and ST-37 in response to invasive insertion of a needle at ST-36. Using a crossover study design, the practitioner performed the procedure on each subject once with bare (uncovered) hands (ABH) and once wearing surgical gloves (ASH) to shield the electric energy transfer. ABH produced a response pattern to each stimulation, whereas ASH produced a response pattern only to the first step. ABH elicited a significantly higher response potential than did ASH (p < 0.001). These results suggest that there may be bio-energy (Qi) transfer during acupuncture along the meridians. This transferred bio-energy (Qi) seems to act as an electromotive force, which is purported to remove the stagnation or blockage of energy and restore an equilibrium state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVE: To examine how social support at work affects depression and organizational productivity in a work-stress framework. METHODS: A self-administered survey for 240 workers in a public hospital in the southeastern United States. RESULTS: Social support at work was directly related to high job control, low depression, and high job performance. Social support did not buffer the negative effects of work factors on depression and organizational productivity. CONCLUSIONS: Social support at work had a direct and beneficial effect on workers' psychological well-being and organizational productivity without any interaction effect on the work-stress framework. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of practicing qigong on middle-age subjects with essential hypertension. Impacts on blood pressure, reported self-efficacy, perceived benefit, and emotion were observed. DESIGN: Thirty-six (36) adult volunteers were assigned to either a waiting list control or a qigong group that practiced two 30-minute qigong programs per week over 8 consecutive weeks. RESULTS: Systolic and diastolic blood pressure was significantly reduced in members of the qigong group after 8 weeks of exercise. Significant improvements in self-efficacy and other cognitive perceptual efficacy variables were also documented in the qigong group compared to the original situation described above. CONCLUSIONS: This pilot study demonstrates the positive effects of practicing qigong on controlling blood pressure and enhancing perceptions of self-efficacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of qi therapy on premenstrual symptoms in women with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). DESIGN: A randomized placebo-controlled trial. SUBJECTS: Thirty-six (36) college women with symptoms of PMS. INTERVENTION: After 2 months of screening, subjects with PMS were randomized to receive real qi therapy (18 subjects) or placebo (18 subjects). The subjects were informed that they would receive one of two types of treatment. They did not know which treatment they received. Each intervention was performed eight times during the second and third cycles with subjects completing a PMS diary. RESULTS: There were significant improvements in the symptoms of negative feeling, pain, water retention, and total PMS symptoms in subjects receiving qi therapy compared to placebo controls. The present study aimed to: (1) identify the educational needs of emergency health care practitioners related to psychological issues following trauma and (2) assess practice differences among practitioners who have had varying amounts of training on PTSD. Data were collected from 109 emergency medicine practitioners. Results indicated that participants felt generally competent in working with post-injury patients. The actual need for additional training on post-trauma psychological reactions was indicated by the fact that nearly 80% reported four or less hours of formal training in PTSD. Formal and informal training amounts were associated with feelings of competency with PTSDrelated training, but were not associated with actual referral practices. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Purpose: Existing data suggest that conventional C(H)OP (cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, prednisone) regimen may not be intensive enough to achieve molecular response, as measured by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) evidence of translocation (14;18)(q32:q21) for follicular lymphoma. This study was undertaken to study the molecular response rate of follicular lymphoma to C(H)OP-based therapy and to analyze prognostic factors for molecular response.Patients and Methods: Twenty patients with pretreatment PCR evidence of t(14;18)(q32; q21) and at least one posttreatment PCR analysis after the initiation of the treatment with C(H)OP with or without radiation therapy constituted the basis for this analysis. The random effects logistic model was used to analyze the data. The following factors were investigated for their relationship to molecular response: gender, age, beta2-microglobulin, use of radiation therapy, Ann Arbor stage, and international Prognostic Index for malignant lymphoma.Results: Median follow-up was 56 months (range, 23-153 months). A total of 135 PCR results were available, 33 from bone marrow and 102 from peripheral blood. Overall, there was a clear and steady decreasing trend toward loss of PCR positivity with increasing time aftertreatment. By univariate analysis, stage > or = 3, stage = 4, International Prognostic Index > or = 2, and no radiation therapy were adverse factors for molecular response. On multivariate analysis, Ann Arbor stage IV and no radiation therapy were independent risk factors for PCR positivity, both for the peripheral blood data analyzed alone and for all data combined.Discussion: It is possible to achieve molecular response with C(H)OP with or without radiation therapy in patients with follicular lymphoma. Qigong is a complementary intervention for preventing and curing disease, and protecting and improving health through regulation of body and mind. Recently, we have been studying the psychoneuroimmunological effects of Qigong on the promotion of health. However, there are not many studies on the therapeutic efficacy of Qigong on various symptoms in Korea, hence the need to survey the clinical efficacy of Qigong. To evaluate the impact of Qigong in health care we categorized its effectiveness on the basis of ten years of subjects' memoranda. Among the 768 subjects, the motivation for doing Qigong was mostly to attend to health problems (81.5%), and males were more likely to use Qigong than females. The most improved symptoms were associated with psychological and musculoskeletal problems. Furthermore 66.9% of subjects reported improvements of perceived physical health and 40.3% of perceived psychological health. Other symptoms reduced by Qigong were pain (43.1%), fatigue (22.1%), and insomnia (8.7%). Wound healing was also surveyed (n = 332), and 84% of respondents reported improvement in recovery time, 66.6% reported reduced inflammation after Qigong and 50.3% reported no scarring as compared to before. In addition, 59.9% of respondents reported an increase in resistance to the common cold after four months of Qigong. The limitation of the study is that it is a retrospective survey on the basis of trainees' experiences of Qigong. The present study investigated the effects of in vitro and in vivo Korean ChunSoo Qi-Energy Healing on neutrophil superoxide generation. Neutrophil superoxide generation was measured by a chemiluminescence assay. Superoxide generation was significantly increased in vitro by emitted Qi-therapy (QT) of 60-second duration and 150-second duration compared to control (1.59-fold for 60 seconds, p < 0.05; 1.50-fold for 150 seconds, p < 0.05). Neutrophil superoxide generation increased significantly immediately after 5 minutes of QT in vivo (1.42-fold, p < 0.05). These results show that QT in vivo and in vitro has an acute stimulatory effect on neutrophil superoxide generation. This study was designed to measure changes in blood pressure (BP), urinary catecholamines and ventilatory functions of patients with mild essential hypertension after 10 weeks of Qigong (Shuxinpingxuegong). Fifty-eight patients volunteered to participate in this study and were randomly divided into either a Qigong group (n = 29), or a control group (n = 29). Systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure decreased significantly in the Qigong group such that both became significantly lower after 10 weeks in the Qigong than in the control group. Also, there was a significant reduction of norepinephrine, metanephrine and epinephrine compared to baseline values in the Qigong group. The ventilatory functions, forced vital capacity and forced expiratory volume per sec, were increased in the Qigong group but not the control. These results suggest that Qigong may stabilize the sympathetic nervous system is effective in modulating levels of urinary catecholamines and BP positively, and in improving ventilatory functions in mildly hypertensive middle-aged patients. The main objective of this study is to examine the effect of Qi-training on the immune system, especially neutrophil bactericidal function. Nine healthy male subjects were studied for the effects of one bout of ChunDoSunBup (CDSB) Qi-training on superoxide (O2- production and adhesion capacity of neutrophils at times immediately after (Post I) and 2 hours after the Qi-training (Post II). The Qi-training enhanced O2- production, reaction velocity and neutrophil adhesion capacity and there were significant differences at Post I compared to before Qi-training (Pre). In addition, the number of white blood cells (WBC), monocytes and lymphocytes were changed significantly through Qi-training.Therefore, it seems that CDSB Qi-training may increase the resistance of trained individuals against common infection and inflammation. This study investigates changes in autonomic nervous function through Qi-training. The power spectrum of heart rate variability (HRV) was examined in 20 sedentary healthy subjects and 20 Qi-trainees. It was found that Qi-training in healthy young subjects during controlled respiration increases the high frequency (HF) power and decreases the low frequency/high frequency (LF/HF) power ratio of HRV. These results support the hypothesis that Qi-training increases cardiac parasympathetic tone. In addition, Qi-trainees were found to have higher parasympathetic heart modulation compared with their age-matched, sedentary counterparts. This augmented HRV in Qi-trainees provides further support for long-term Qi-training as a possible non-pharmacological cardio-protective maneuver. We report a case of a 35-year-old woman who underwent uterine artery embolization (UAE) for symptomatic multiple uterine fibroids with collateral aberrant right ovarian artery that originated from the right external iliac artery. We believe that this is the first reported case in the literature of this collateral uterine flow by the right ovarian artery originated from the right external iliac artery. We aimed to investigate and compare sonographic abnormalities in the substantia nigra (SN) in patients with idiopathic restless legs syndrome (iRLS), those with RLS and Parkinson's disease (RLS-PD), those with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (iPD), and healthy controls. Study participants totaled 60 patients with RLS (41 iRLS, 19 RLS-PD), 25 iPD patients, and 35 age-matched healthy controls. Comparing all groups, the SN region's echogenicity area in the iRLS patients was significantly decreased compared with that in the PD-RLS, iPD, and control groups (p < 0.0001), and the PD-RLS group demonstrated a significantly increased echogenicity area compared with the control group (p < 0.05) and iRLS group (p < 0.0001). The aim of this study was to examine the effects of Qi therapy (QT) on the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), including fatigue and complications. QT affected the experience of mental and emotional relaxation in the subjects of these case studies, who also gained strength to overcome their pain and fatigue. Although the results of these two case studies may not constitute conclusive evidence, they provide a foundation for the exploration of QT as a complementary therapy in the reduction of negative symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome. OBJECTIVES: To examine the effect of qi training on neutrophil bactericidal function (superoxide generation and adhesion). METHODS: We studied the effects of one session of qi training on superoxide generation and adhesion of neutrophils immediately after (Post I), and 2 hours after qi training (Post II), in nine young and nine elderly male subjects. RESULTS: The qi training significantly enhanced the superoxide generation and adhesion of neutrophils, and there were significant differences at Post I compared to before qi training (Pre) in both groups. Objective: The impact of conduit dimensions and location of esophagogastric anastomosis on long-term quality of life after esophagectomy remains unexplored. We investigated the association of these parameters with surgical outcomes and patient-reported quality of life at least 18 months after esophagectomy. Methods: We identified all patients who underwent esophagectomy for cancer from 2018 to 2020 in our institution. We reviewed each patient's initial postoperative computed tomography scan measuring the gastric conduit's greatest width (centimeters), linear staple line length (centimeters), and relative location of esophagogastric anastomosis (vertebra). Quality of life was ascertained using patient-reported outcome measures. Perioperative complications, length of stay, and mortality were collected. Multivariate regressions were performed. Results: Our study revealed that a more proximal anastomosis was linked to an increased risk of pulmonary complications, a lower recurrence rate, and greater long-term insomnia. Increased maximum intrathoracic conduit width was significantly associated with trouble enjoying meals and reflux long term after esophagectomy. A longer conduit stapled line correlated with fewer issues related to insomnia, improved appetite, less dysphagia, and significantly enhanced “social,” “role,” and “physical'” aspects of the patient's long-term quality of life. Conclusions: The dimensions of the gastric conduit and the height of the anastomosis may be independently associated with outcomes and long-term quality of life after esophagectomy for cancer.
