Abstract

Background: Comprehensive biotic surveys, or ‘all taxon biodiversity inventories’ (ATBI), have traditionally been limited in scale or scope due to the complications surrounding specimen sorting and species identification. To circumvent these issues, several ATBI projects have successfully integrated DNA barcoding into their identification procedures and witnessed acceleration in their surveys and subsequent increase in project scope and scale. The Biodiversity Institute of Ontario partnered with the rare Charitable Research Reserve and delegates of the 6th International Barcode of Life Conference to complete its own rapid, barcode-assisted ATBI of an established land trust in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada. New information: The existing species inventory for the rare Charitable Research Reserve was rapidly expanded by integrating a DNA barcoding workflow with two surveying strategies — a comprehensive sampling scheme over four months, followed by a one-day bioblitz involving international taxonomic experts. The two surveys resulted in 25,287 and 3,502 specimens barcoded, respectively, as well as 127 human observations. This barcoded material, all vouchered at the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario collection, covers 14 phyla, 29 classes, 117 orders, and 531 families of animals, plants, fungi, and lichens. Overall, the ATBI documented 1,102 new species records for the nature reserve, expanding the existing long-term inventory by 49%. In addition, 2,793 distinct Barcode Index Numbers (BINs) were assigned to genus or higher level taxonomy, and represent additional species that will be added once their taxonomy is resolved. For the 3,502 specimens, the collection, sequence analysis, taxonomic assignment, data release and manuscript submission by 100+ co-authors all occurred in less than one week. Abstract

Aims: Degeneration of the distal neuromuscular circuitry is a hallmark pathology of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The potential for microtubule dysfunction to be a critical pathophysiological mechanism in the destruction of this circuitry is increasingly being appreciated. Stabilization of microtubules to improve neuronal integrity and pathology has been shown to be a particularly favourable approach in other neurodegenerative diseases. We present evidence here that treatment with the microtubule‐targeting compound Epothilone D (EpoD) both positively and negatively affects the spinal neuromuscular circuitry in the SOD1G93A mouse model of ALS. Methods: SOD1G93A mice were treated every 5 days with 2 mg/kg EpoD. Evaluation of motor behaviour, neurological phenotype and survival was completed, with age‐dependent histological characterization also conducted, using the thy1‐YFP mouse. Motor neuron degeneration, axonal integrity, neuromuscular junction (NMJ) health and gliosis were also assessed. Results: EpoD treatment prevented loss of the spinal motor neuron soma, and distal axon degeneration, early in the disease course. This, however, was not associated with protection of the NMJ synapse and did not improve motor phenotype or clinical progression. EpoD administration was also found to be neurotoxic at later disease stages. This was evidenced by accelerated motor neuron cell body loss, increasing gliosis, and was associated with detrimental outcomes to motor behaviour, clinical assessment and survival. Conclusions: The results suggest that EpoD accelerates disease progression in the SOD1G93A mouse model of ALS, and highlights that the pathophysiological involvement of microtubules in ALS is an evolving and underappreciated phenomenon. Abstract

Photomechanical effects in materials can directly convert light stimulus into mechanical work. The magnitude of the photogenerated work is directly associated with the material stiffness (modulus). Here, we report the synthesis of an azobenzene-functionalized polyamide (azoPA) and demonstrate its room-temperature photomechanical response. The comparatively large photomechanical response of this high stiffness material is enabled by light-induced, azobenzene-assisted dissociation of inter-chain hydrogen bonding within the polymer backbone. The photomechanical response of the azoPA is directly contrasted with an analogous azobenzene-functionalized polyimide (azoPI) to illustrate the influence of intermolecular interactions. Abstract

We show extensive Monte Carlo (MC) results on properties of thin films made of stacked XY triangular layers of atoms bearing Heisenberg spins. The film surfaces are frustrated due to antiferromagnetic in-plane interactions, while interior layers are ferromagnetic. We have included both the cohesive and magnetic interactions between neighboring atoms. These simultaneous magnetic and cohesive interactions are supposed to be the Lennard-Jones potential. Due to these interactions, the magnetic atoms move around their equilibrium positions (off-lattice model). We have carried MC calculations with varying surface antiferromagnetic exchange interaction. Depending on parameters the surface spin configuration can be noncollinear and film surfaces become magnetically disordered at a temperature lower than that of interior layers. 26th European Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conference and Exhibition; 2236-2238, The power loss in multi-crystalline silicon (mc-Si) MWT solar cells can be reduced by adjusting the cell structure and the electrode shape. To maximize the efficiency of mc-MWT solar cell, we developed and tested the MWT solar cell with 4 bus bars on rear sides. The calculated results showed that the power loss of the proposed MWT solar cell can be reduced by 2.4%. In particular, it is possible to minimize the power loss of the proposed MWT solar cell by reducing finger width, and sustaining the same finger space. To realize the fine electrode under 60 μm width, the offset printing technology was applied to MWT solar cells. In addition, the hole filling paste for MWT could protect the shunting behavior in via holes, decreasing shunt resistance (Rp). As a result, an efficiency of 17.6 % at 156 × 156 mm2 size was obtained by the effect of MWT structure & fine electrodes.

Abstract

Sustainable development cannot be reached by incremental improvements; it requires a trajectory change. This implies the need to redesign not only consumer products and production infrastructures but also our daily behavioral routines and consumption patterns.Design for sustainability (DfS) goes beyond the established approach of Design for the environment (DfE) by integrating issues of social context and human quality of life into the design brief, in addition to environmental and – of course – functional and economic aspects. Such a redesign of consumption patterns need not imply a diminished quality of life, if the efficiency potentials beyond production are systematically exploited: provision, use, and satisfaction efficiency safeguard well-being while changing the consumption trajectories.As guidance in this process, it is useful to distinguish human needs, almost an anthropogenic constant, from the culture dependent satisfiers chosen to meet those needs: a sustainable choice is one which is socially as well as environmentally benign while equally satisfying needs.These considerations have been used to develop SCALES, an integrative set of design principles. It embodies existing design criteria, a wide range of previously published criteria from the design for the environment, and design for sustainability literature. Applying such integrative sets of design criteria is a creativity-provoking strategy which will help designers meet the challenge of working at the interface between sustainable production and consumption.
