Abstract

This article explores levels of proficiency in Chinese with reference to the new HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) Chinese Proficiency Test and the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Special attention is given to learning and teaching the writing of Chinese characters and the use of Pinyin, a phonetic Romanization of the Chinese language. First, the feasibility of both language scales is considered as a means of capturing proficiency in Chinese; then descriptions of Chinese courses offered by university language centres are analysed; and finally, semi-structured interviews with teachers of such courses and their learners are reported. This results in a number of suggestions for specifying instructional designs for teaching Chinese writing skills.

Item does not contain fulltext Across many languages from unrelated families, spoken-word recognition is subject to a constraint whereby potential word candidates must contain a vowel. This constraint minimizes competition from embedded words (e.g., in English, disfavoring win in twin because t cannot be a word). However, the constraint would be counter-productive in certain languages that allow stand-alone vowelless open-class words. One such language is Berber (where t is indeed a word). Berber listeners here detected words affixed to nonsense contexts with or without vowels. Length effects seen in other languages replicated in Berber, but in contrast to prior findings, word detection was not hindered by vowelless contexts. When words can be vowelless, otherwise universal constraints disfavoring vowelless words do not feature in spoken-word recognition. 6 p.

Abstract

In het onderzoek waarover wij hier rapporteren, exploreren wij eerst wat de gevolgen zijn voor de indeling naar etniciteit wanneer die gebaseerd wordt op zowel objectieve als subjectieve criteria. Deze etnische classificatie wordt toegepast in een onderzoek binnen het culturele domein lezen. Deze keuze is mede gebaseerd op de heersende gedachte dat lezen een middel is om een taal beter te beheersen, dat taal een kernwaarde is voor etnische identiteit (Fishman 1977), en dat de beheersing van de dominante taal een sterke indicator is voor succesvolle integratie. Vervolgens gaan we na welke wijze van etnische classificatie het beste bruikbaar is voor onderzoek naar integratieprocessen.
