Search

Cryogenic Rare Event Search with Superconducting Thermometers (CRESST) is a long-standing direct dark matter detection experiment with cryogenic detectors located at the underground facility Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy. CRESST-III, the third generation of CRESST, was specifically designed to have a world-leading sensitivity for low-mass dark matter (DM) (less than 2 GeV/$$\hbox {c}^{2}$$c2) to probe the spin-independent DM-nucleus cross section. At present, a large part of the parameter space for spin-independent scattering off nuclei remains untested for dark matter particles with masses below few GeV/$$\hbox {c}^{2}$$c2 although many motivated theoretical models having been proposed. The CRESST-III experiment employs scintillating $$\hbox {CaWO}_{{4}}$$CaWO4 crystals of $$\sim$$∼ 25 g as target material for dark matter interactions operated as cryogenic scintillating calorimeters at $$\sim$$∼ 10 mK. CRESST-III first data taking was successfully completed in 2018, achieving an unprecedented energy threshold for nuclear recoils. This result extended the present sensitivity to DM particles as light as $$\sim$$∼ 160 MeV/$$\hbox {c}^{2}$$c2. In this paper, an overview of the CRESST-III detectors and results will be presented.

The CRESST experiment (Cryogenic Rare Even Search with Superconducting Thermometers), located at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, searches for dark matter particles via their elastic scattering off nuclei in a target material. The CRESST target consists of scintillating CaWO4 crystals, which are operated as cryogenic calorimeters at millikelvin temperatures. Each interaction in the CaWO4 target crystal produces a phonon signal and a light signal that is measured by a second cryogenic calorimeter. Since the CRESST-II result in 2015, the experiment is leading the field of direct dark matter search for dark matter masses below 1.7 GeV/c 2, extending the reach of direct searches to the sub-GeV/c 2 mass region. For CRESST-III, whose Phase 1 started in July 2016, detectors have been optimized to reach the performance required to further probe the low-mass region with unprecedented sensitivity. In this contribution the achievements of the CRESST-III detectors will be discussed together with preliminary results and perspectives of Phase 1.

A precise measurement of the radio-purity levels of the CaWO4 crystals used for both the CRESST and the NUCLEUS experiment, is fundamental for a better background understanding. The sensitivity of HPGe detectors is not sufficient to the excellent radio-purity levels of the CaWO4 crystals produced in-house at the Technische Universität München (TUM). We report on a cryogenic α-screening facility which will provide a method to determine the radio-purity of this crystals by measuring the alpha-decays with a high precision, taking advantage of the unique experimental environment of the shallow underground laboratory (UGL) of the TUM.

The rapid degradation of the functional properties of many Ti-based alloys is due to the precipitation of the $\omega$ phase. In the conventional high-temperature shape memory alloy Ti-Ta the formation of this phase compromises completely the shape memory effect and high (>100{\deg}C) transformation temperatures cannot be mantained during cycling. A solution to this problem is the addition of other elements to form Ti-Ta-X alloys, which often modifies the transformation temperatures; due to the largely unexplored space of possible compositions, very few elements are known to stabilize the shape memory effect without decreasing the transformation temperatures below 100{\deg}C. In this study we use transparent descriptors derived from first principles calculations to search for new ternary Ti-Ta-X alloys that combine stability and high temperatures. We suggest four new alloys with these properties, namely Ti-Ta-Sb, Ti-Ta-Bi, Ti-Ta-In, and Ti-Ta-Sc. Our predictions for the most promising of these alloys, Ti-Ta-Sc, are subsequently fully validated by experimental investigations, the new alloy Ti-Ta-Sc showing no traces of $\omega$ phase after cycling. Our computational strategy is immediately transferable to other materials and may contribute to suppress $\omega$ phase formation in a large class of alloys.

Rejuvenation of the initially hot isostatic pressing (HIP) heat-treated single-crystal Ni-base superalloy (SX) ERBO/1 was examined experimentally and via phase field simulation to establish rejuvenation treatments as a cost-effective alternative for another interval of service life. Creep was performed at 950 °C and 350 MPa, and the specimens were crept to 0.6 pct (creep rate minimum) or 2 pct strain, respectively. A slight coarsening of the γ/γ′ microstructure was observed experimentally and via simulation at 0.6 pct and rafting at 2 pct strain. The damaged microstructures were rejuvenated in a novel hot isostatic press that provides fast quenching rates before the same specimens were recrept under the same initial creep conditions. High-resolution microscopy proves that the rejuvenation re-establishes the original γ/γ′ microstructure in the dendrite core of the precrept specimens (0.6 and 2 pct). However, the interdendritic areas of the 2 pct precrept and rejuvenated specimen still contain elongated γ′ particles enwrapped by interfacial dislocation networks that survived the applied rejuvenation. The subsequent experimental and simulated creep tests after rejuvenation demonstrated that the creep behavior is only reproducible by the proposed rejuvenation for specimens that had crept until the end of the primary creep regime.

The Physics Department of the Technical University of Munich operates a shallow underground detector laboratory in Garching, Germany. It provides $$\sim 160\,{\mathrm{m}^2}$$ of laboratory space which is shielded from cosmic radiation by $$\sim 6\,\mathrm{m}$$ of gravel and soil, corresponding to a shielding of $$\sim 15\,{\mathrm{m.w.e.}}$$ . The laboratory also houses a cleanroom equipped with work- and wetbenches, a chemical fumehood as well as a spin-coater and a mask-aligner for photolithographic processing of semiconductor detectors. Furthermore, the shallow underground laboratory runs two high-purity germanium detector screening stations, a liquid argon cryostat and a $$^3$$ He– $$^4$$ He dilution refrigerator with a base temperature of $$\le 12-14\,\mathrm{mK}$$ . The infrastructure provided by the shallow laboratory is particularly relevant for the characterization of $$\hbox {CaWO}_4$$ target crystals for the CRESST-III experiment, detector fabrication and assembly for rare event searches. Future applications of the laboratory include detector development in the framework of coherent neutrino nucleus scattering experiments ( $$\nu $$ -cleus) and studying its potential as a site to search for MeV-scale dark matter with gram-scale cryogenic detectors.

Antibiotic drugs are excreted to a large proportion by livestock. Thus, antibiotics are distributed on fields with slurry and can be taken up by plants. In the present study, hydroponic experiments were performed to reveal whether the widely administered chlortetracycline is taken up into wheat grain in a concentration-dependent manner. A further goal was to determine (chlor)tetracyclines in wheat and rye grain from agricultural practice.; Results: Increasing chlortetracycline deposition in wheat grain was observed with a rising chlortetracycline spiking level in the hydroponic solution. In 371 selected wheat and rye samples from three growing years of agricultural practice, the overall detection frequency was 21% for tetracyclines. In the most highly contaminated sample, tetracyclines occurred at 18.2 μg kg-1 . Tetracycline residues were also found in rye grain. Conversion and degradation products of (chlor)tetracycline such as tetracycline, doxycycline and demeclocycline were detected in grains from hydroponic experiments and from agricultural practice.; Conclusion: Concentrations of tetracyclines found in wheat and rye grains were of no concern with respect to toxicity regarding human consumption. However, antibiotic concentrations below the minimum inhibitory concentration can select for antibiotic resistance in bacteria. Thus, low levels of different tetracycline residues contained in food should be taken into account regarding risk assessment. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.; © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

High-throughput methods were used to investigate a Ni-Co-Al thin film materials library, which is of interest for structural and functional applications (superalloys, shape memory alloys). X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements were performed to identify the phase regions of the Ni-Co-Al system in its state after annealing at 600 °C. Optical, electrical, and magneto-optical measurements were performed to map functional properties and confirm XRD results. All results and literature data were used to propose a ternary thin film phase diagram of the Ni-Co-Al thin film system.

In this work, we want to highlight the potential of lithium as a target for spin-dependent dark matter search in cryogenic experiments, with a special focus on the low-mass region of the parameter space. We operated a prototype detector module based on a $$\hbox {Li}_2\hbox {MoO}_4$$ Li2MoO4 target crystal in an above-ground laboratory. Despite the high background environment, the detector sets a competitive limit on spin-dependent interactions of dark matter particles with protons and neutrons for masses between $$0.8~\hbox {GeV/c}^2$$ 0.8GeV/c2 and $$1.5~\hbox {GeV/c}^2$$ 1.5GeV/c2 .

The evaluation of large amounts of digital image data is of growing importance for biology, including for the exploration and monitoring of marine habitats. However, only a tiny percentage of the image data collected is evaluated by marine biologists who manually interpret and annotate the image contents, which can be slow and laborious. In order to overcome the bottleneck in image annotation, two strategies are increasingly proposed: “citizen science” and “machine learning”. In this study, we investigated how the combination of citizen science, to detect objects, and machine learning, to classify megafauna, could be used to automate annotation of underwater images. For this purpose, multiple large data sets of citizen science annotations with different degrees of common errors and inaccuracies observed in citizen science data were simulated by modifying “gold standard” annotations done by an experienced marine biologist. The parameters of the simulation were determined on the basis of two citizen science experiments. It allowed us to analyze the relationship between the outcome of a citizen science study and the quality of the classifications of a deep learning megafauna classifier. The results show great potential for combining citizen science with machine learning, provided that the participants are informed precisely about the annotation protocol. Inaccuracies in the position of the annotation had the most substantial influence on the classification accuracy, whereas the size of the marking and false positive detections had a smaller influence.

Das System Ti-Ta gilt aufgrund von Phasenumwandlungstemperaturen weit über 100°C als vielversprechender Kandidat für die Anwendung als Hochtemperatur-Formgedächtnislegierung (HT FGL). Bei den angestrebten erhöhten Temperaturen können verschiedene elementare Prozesse wie Ausscheidung oder Oxidation die martensitische Phasenumwandlung beeinflussen. Der Fokus der vorliegenden Arbeit liegt auf einer Untersuchung der Phasenstabilität und des Oxidationsverhaltens von binären Ti-Ta Legierungen. Hierfür wurden fortgeschrittene Methoden der zur mikrostrukturellen Untersuchung wie die Synchrotronstrahlung, Transmissionselektronenmikroskopie und die Atomsondentomographie angewendet. Die Ergebnisse der vorliegenden Arbeit offenbaren den Einfluss von Ausscheidungs- und Oxidationsprozessen auf die funktionelle Degradation der Ti-Ta HT-FGL. Gleichzeitig eröffnet die Charakterisierung des Auflösungsprozesses der \(\omega\)-Phase einen Weg zur Verlängerung der Lebensdauer.

Among equiatomic alloys of the Cr-Mn-Fe-Co-Ni system, MnFeNi was shown to exhibit a strong anti-invar behavior but little is known regarding its mechanical properties. The objective of the present study is to investigate Hall&ndash, Petch strengthening by grain and annealing twin boundaries in MnFeNi. For this purpose, seven different grain sizes between 17 and 216 &micro, m were produced. Mean grain sizes (excluding annealing twin boundaries) and crystallite sizes (including them) were determined using the linear intercept method. Overall, 25% of the boundaries were found to be annealing twin boundaries regardless of the grain size. In some cases, two twin boundaries can be present in one grain forming an annealing twin, which thickness represents one quarter of the mean grain size. Based on a comparison of the mean twin thickness of different alloys with different stacking fault energy (SFE), we estimated an SFE of 80 &plusmn, 20 mJ/m2 for MnFeNi. Compression tests of MnFeNi with different grain sizes were performed between 77 and 873 K and revealed a parallel shift of the Hall&ndash, Petch lines with temperature. The interaction between dislocations and boundaries was investigated by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) in a deformed specimen. It was found that a large number of dislocations are piling up against grain boundaries while the pile-ups at annealing twin boundaries contain much fewer dislocations. This indicates that annealing twin boundaries in this alloy are less effective obstacles to dislocation motion than grain boundaries.

Digital imaging is gaining more and more attention in marine environmental monitoring and exploration. Nowadays, mobile platforms such as autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are equipped with high-resolution cameras that can collect gigabytes of digital images in a single dive. To extract quantitative and qualitative information from the accumulating image collections, annotation tools such as BIIGLE 2.0 have been proposed recently and have been established in the data analysis workflow. These tools run as web applications on a central server and can be accessed worldwide via the Internet. However, marine science and engineering are naturally associated with a high degree of mobility and, in some cases, limited resources or Internet access. Here we present a new application architecture for BIIGLE 2.0, which is particularly suitable for offshore deployment on a variety of platforms such as a server, workstation, laptop or even a small single-board computer such as a Raspberry Pi. We refer to the application architecture in combination with a mobile hardware platform as "BIIGLE2Go", which addresses the need for more flexibility and mobility in image annotation. We present and evaluate a first prototype for BIIGLE2Go, which runs as a mobile annotation system on a low-cost Raspberry Pi 3B.

International audience; Coherent elastic neutrino–nucleus scattering ($\hbox {CE}\nu \hbox {NS}$) offers a unique way to study neutrino properties and to search for new physics beyond the Standard Model. Nuclear reactors are promising sources to explore this process at low energies since they deliver large fluxes of anti-neutrinos with typical energies of a few MeV. In this paper, a new-generation experiment to study $\hbox {CE}\nu \hbox {NS}$ is described. The NUCLEUS experiment will use cryogenic detectors which feature an unprecedentedly low-energy threshold and a time response fast enough to be operated under above-ground conditions. Both sensitivity to low-energy nuclear recoils and a high event rate tolerance are stringent requirements to measuring $\hbox {CE}\nu \hbox {NS}$ of reactor anti-neutrinos. A new experimental site, the Very-Near-Site (VNS), at the Chooz nuclear power plant in France is described. The VNS is located between the two 4.25 $\hbox {GW}_{\mathrm {th}}$ reactor cores and matches the requirements of NUCLEUS. First results of on-site measurements of neutron and muon backgrounds, the expected dominant background contributions, are given. In this paper a preliminary experimental set-up with dedicated active and passive background reduction techniques and first background estimations are presented. Furthermore, the feasibility to operate the detectors in coincidence with an active muon veto at shallow overburden is studied. The paper concludes with a sensitivity study pointing out the physics potential of NUCLEUS at the Chooz nuclear power plant.

In the current direct dark matter search landscape, the leading experiments in the sub-GeV mass region mostly rely on cryogenic techniques which employ crystalline targets. One attractive type of crystals for these experiments is those containing lithium, due to the fact that $$^7\hbox {Li}$$7Li is an ideal candidate to study spin-dependent dark matter interactions in the low mass region. Furthermore, $$^6\hbox {Li}$$6Li can absorb neutrons, a challenging background for dark matter experiments, through a distinctive signature which allows the monitoring of the neutron flux directly on site. In this work, we show the results obtained with three different detectors based on $$\hbox {LiAlO}_2$$LiAlO2, a target crystal never used before in cryogenic experiments.

Digital imaging has become one of the most important techniques in environmental monitoring and exploration. In the case of the marine environment, mobile platforms such as autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are now equipped with high-resolution cameras to capture huge collections of images from the seabed. However, the timely evaluation of all these images presents a bottleneck problem as tens of thousands or more images can be collected during a single dive. This makes computational support for marine image analysis essential. Computer-aided analysis of environmental images (and marine images in particular) with machine learning algorithms is promising, but challenging and different to other imaging domains because training data and class labels cannot be collected as efficiently and comprehensively as in other areas. In this paper, we present Machine learning Assisted Image Annotation (MAIA), a new image annotation method for environmental monitoring and exploration that overcomes the obstacle of missing training data. The method uses a combination of autoencoder networks and Mask Region-based Convolutional Neural Network (Mask R-CNN), which allows human observers to annotate large image collections much faster than before. We evaluated the method with three marine image datasets featuring different types of background, imaging equipment and object classes. Using MAIA, we were able to annotate objects of interest with an average recall of 84.1% more than twice as fast as compared to "traditional" annotation methods, which are purely based on software-supported direct visual inspection and manual annotation. The speed gain increases proportionally with the size of a dataset. The MAIA approach represents a substantial improvement on the path to greater efficiency in the annotation of large benthic image collections.

Nuclear reactors are promising sources to run new-generation neutrino experiments exploring coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering (CENNS). In this talk, a new experimental site at the Chooz nuclear power plant in France, the Very Near Site (VNS), will be introduced along with first results from dedicated muon and neutron measurement campaigns. Based on these results, the feasibility of running a CENNS experiment at the VNS using the NU-CLEUS detector concept will then be discussed. Neutron background identification and rejection is a key point to successfully measure CENNS at reactors. Therefore, the talk will conclude with the status of the BASKET detector R&D program, which offers interesting possibilities to achieve neutron particle identification in a CENNS reactor experiment. A large source of antibiotic active compounds and resistant bacteria is livestock waste, distributed as fertilizer on fields, used for vegetable cultivation. Frequently consumed vegetable, contaminated by low levels of antibiotics, may contribute to the development of bacterial antibiotic resistance. The objective of this work was to estimate the possible role of red cabbage as reservoir and carrier of antibiotic contaminants into the food chain. Red cabbage was exposed to antibiotics in hydroponic cultures and farming conditions. Enrofloxacin (ENR), chlortetracycline (CTC), monensin (MON) and amoxicillin (AMO) were separately added to nutrient solutions. Analysed by sequential extraction and LC–MS/MS methods, the plants revealed a remarkable uptake of CTC and in particular ENR (old leaves 0.22 mg/kg fresh weight (fw) CTC, 6.0 mg/kg fw ENR; roots up to 215.0 mg/kg fw CTC, 14.6 mg/kg fw ENR). The uptake of MON was significantly lower and AMO was not detectable. Red cabbage was also grown on manure-fertilized plots. The pig manure contained defined amounts of CTC and ENR (50 and 150 mg/kg). At harvest the edible parts of cabbage had between 9.2 to 16.9 µg/kg fw ENR, while there was no evidence obtained for the uptake of CTC. Finally, production steps of canned red cabbage were examined for carry over effects. Traces of tetracycline (16.4–19.2 µg/kg fw) were detected in supplies of freshly harvested vegetable, grown conventionally, but not in the marketable final product.

This data article presents a compilation of microstructural and mechanical data regarding the ternary single-phase FCC MnFeNi medium-entropy alloy (MEA). For the analysis, interpretation, and comparison of the data to literature values, the reader can refer to the original related research article entitled “Effect of Temperature and Texture on Hall-Petch Strengthening by Grain and Annealing Twin Boundaries in the MnFeNi Medium-Entropy Alloy”, see Schneider et al. (Metals 9, 2019, 84). The microstructural data reported here include: (i) raw backscatter electron (BSE) micrographs (tif-files) obtained using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) for nine different grain sizes with four images for each grain size and (ii) pdf reports and tables shown below presenting the distributions of the grain- (d, accounting for grain boundaries only) and crystallite- (c, which accounts for both grain and annealing twin boundaries) sizes and of the annealing twin thicknesses (t). These datasets may be useful to develop new algorithms for the automated evaluation of microstructural parameters in recrystallized alloys, i.e. with these benchmark data, an algorithm for image analysis could be trained to assess the above mentioned microstructural parameters. This would help to speed up the analysis of microstructures and improve its reliability. Additional tables describing the recrystallized microstructures and texture include the average number of annealing twin boundaries per grain (n), and the average Taylor factors (M). Raeisinia et al. (Model. Simul. Mater. Sc. 16, 2008, 025001) recently used a viscoplastic model to show that differences in the distribution of microstructural parameters affect the Hall-Petch parameters, but no attempt has been carried out so far to experimentally investigate this possibility since grain size distributions are rarely reported. Here, our benchmark data (e.g. distribution in grain/crystallite sizes, annealing twins per grain, distribution of annealing twin thicknesses) could be used to address these issues. The data describing the mechanical properties reported here are excel-sheets of raw stress-strain curves for temperatures ranging from 77 K to 873 K and different grain sizes. The yield stress (σ0.2%) and the normalized Hall-Petch parameters (σ0/G and ky/Gb2) are given for all temperatures. The normalized Hall-Petch parameters are reported here since they allow to better compare the strength and the magnitude of grain boundary strengthening of different alloys with the same crystallographic structure, see Cordero et al. (Int. Mater. Rev. 61, 2016, 495–512). Moreover, the Hall-Petch parameters as well as the mechanical data reported here could be used for data mining and implemented in programs used for alloy design.

The CRESST-III experiment which is dedicated to low-mass dark matter search uses scintillating CaWO$_4$ crystals operated as cryogenic particle detectors. Background discrimination is achieved by exploiting the scintillating light signal of CaWO$_4$ and by a novel active detector holder presented in this paper. In a test setup above ground, a nuclear-recoil energy threshold of $E_{th}=(190.6\pm5.2)$eV is reached with a 24g prototype detector, which corresponds to an estimated threshold of $\sim$50eV when being operated in the low-noise CRESST cryostat. This is the lowest threshold reported for direct dark matter searches. For CRESST-III phase 1, ten such detector modules were installed in the cryostat which have the potential to improve significantly the sensitivity to scatterings of dark matter particles with masses down to $\sim$0.1GeV/c$^2$., 12 pages, 5 figures

The CRESST-III detectors are designed to achieve the performance required to probe the low-mass region of the parameter space with a sensitivity never reached before. In this paper, new results on the performance and an overview of the CRESST-III detectors will be presented, emphasizing the results about the low-energy threshold for nuclear recoil of CRESST-III Phase 1 which started collecting data in August 2016.

Co–Ni–Ga high-temperature shape memory alloys (HT-SMAs) are well-known candidate materials for damping applications at elevated temperatures. Recent studies showed that upon heat treatment in stress-induced martensite under compressive loads transformation temperatures can be increased significantly, qualifying Co–Ni–Ga for HT-actuation. The increase in transformation temperatures is related to a change in chemical order recently validated via neutron diffraction experiments. Since SMAs show distinct tension–compression asymmetry in terms of theoretical transformation strains and bearable stresses, understanding the impact of martensite aging in tension is crucial for future applications. The current results indicate that martensite aging in tension provides for a further improvement in functional properties.

The CRESST experiment uses cryogenic detectors based on transition-edge sensors to search for dark matter interactions. Each detector module consists of a scintillating CaWO $$_4$$ crystal and a silicon-on-sapphire (SOS) light detector which operate in coincidence (phonon-light technique). The 40-mm-diameter SOS disks (2 g mass) used in the data taking campaign of CRESST-II Phase 2 (2014–2016) reached absolute baseline resolutions of $$\sigma =$$ 4–7 eV. This is the best performance reported for cryogenic light detectors of this size. Newly developed silicon beaker light detectors (4 cm height, 4 cm diameter, 6 g mass), which cover a large fraction of the target crystal surface, have achieved a baseline resolution of $$\sigma = 5.8\,$$ eV. First results of further improved light detectors developed for the ongoing low-threshold CRESST-III experiment are presented.
