Abstract: The article first studies the propagation of well prepared high frequency waves with small amplitude $\eps$ near constant solutions for entropy solutions of multidimensional nonlinear scalar conservation laws. Second, such oscillating solutions are used to highlight a conjecture of Lions, Perthame, Tadmor, (1994), about the maximal regularizing effect for nonlinear conservation laws. Abstract: 25 pages; International audience; In this paper we deal with a semilinear hyperbolic chemotaxis model in one space dimension evolving on a network, with suitable transmission conditions at nodes. This framework is motivated by tissue-engineering scaffolds used for improving wound healing. We introduce a numerical scheme, which guarantees global mass densities conservation. Moreover our scheme is able to yield a correct approximation of the effects of the source term at equilibrium. Several numerical tests are presented to show the behavior of solutions and to discuss the stability and the accuracy of our approximation.

Abstract: Like the Helmholtz equation, the high frequency time-harmonic Maxwell's equa- tions are difficult to solve by classical iterative methods. Domain decomposition methods are currently most promising: following the first provably convergent method in [4], various optimized Schwarz methods were developed over the last decade [2, 3, 10, 11, 1, 6, 13, 14, 16, 8]. There are however two basic formulations for Maxwell's equation: the first order formulation, for which complete optimized results are known [6], and the second order, or curl-curl formulation, with partial optimization results [1, 13, 16]. We show in this paper that the convergence factors and the optimization process for the two formulations are the same. We then show by numerical experiments that the Fourier analysis predicts very well the behavior of the algorithms for a Yee scheme discretization, which corresponds to Nedelec edge elements on a tensor product mesh, in the curl-curl formulation. When using however mixed type Nedelec elements on an irregular tetrahedral mesh, numerical experiments indicate that transverse magnetic (TM) modes are less well resolved for high frequencies than transverse electric (TE) modes, and a heuristic can then be used to compensate for this in the optimization.

Abstract: International audience; This paper reports numerical investigations on the identification of the electron temperature profile T e from interferometry and polarimetry Stokes vector measurements with the equilibrium code Newton direct and inverse computation for equilibrium. This latter enables the consistent resolution of the inverse equilibrium reconstruction problem in the framework of nonlinear free-boundary equilibrium coupled to the Stokes model equation for polarimetry. Abstract: International audience; Numerical simulations of the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations have played a significant role in plasma research over the years. The need of obtaining physical and stable solutions to these equations has led to the development of several schemes, all requiring to satisfy and preserve the divergence constraint of the magnetic field numerically. In this paper, we aim to show the importance of maintaining this constraint numerically. We investigate in particular the hyperbolic divergence cleaning technique applied to the ideal MHD equations on a collocated grid and compare it to the constrained transport technique that uses a staggered grid to maintain the property. The methods are implemented in the software HERACLES and several numerical tests are presented, where the robustness and accuracy of the different schemes can be directly compared.; Au fil des ans, la simulation numérique des équations de la magnétohydrodynamique (MHD) a joué un rôle important dans la recherche en physique des plasmas. La nécessité de trouver des solutions physiques et stables à ces équations a conduit à l'élaboration de plusieurs schémas numériques, tous devant satisfaire et préserver la contrainte de divergence nulle pour le champ magnétique numérique. Dans cet article, nous tenterons de montrer l'importance de maintenir cette contrainte numériquement. En particulier, nous étudions la technique de nettoyage hyperbolique de la divergence appliquée aux équations de la MHD idéale discrétisées sur une grille colocalisée et nous la comparons à la technique du transport constraint qui utilise une grille décalée pour maintenir cette propriété. Les méthodes sont implémentées dans le code HERACLES et des tests numériques sont présentés. Il est ainsi possible de comparer directement la robustesse et la précision des méthodes.

Abstract: In the isogeometric analysis framework, a computational domain is exactly described using the same representation as the one employed in the CAD process. For a CAD object, various computational domains can be constructed with the same shape but with different parameterizations; however one basic requirement is that the resulting parameterization should have no self-intersections. Moreover we will show, with an example of a 3D thermal conduction problem, that different parameterizations of a computational domain have different impacts on the simulation results and efficiency in isogeometric analysis. In this paper, a linear and easy-to-check sufficient condition for the injectivity of a trivariate B-spline parameterization is proposed. For problems with exact solutions, we will describe a shape optimization method to obtain an optimal parameterization of a computational domain. The proposed injective condition is used to check the injectivity of the initial trivariate B-spline parameterization constructed by discrete Coons volume method, which is a generalization of the discrete Coons patch method. Several examples and comparisons are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. During the refinement step, the optimal parameterization can achieve the same accuracy as the initial parameterization but with less degrees of freedom.

Abstract: International audience; This paper proposes a parallel numerical algorithm to simulate the flow and the transport in a discrete fracture network taking into account the mass exchanges with the surrounding matrix. The discretization of the Darcy fluxes is based on the Vertex Approximate Gradient finite volume scheme adapted to polyhedral meshes and to heterogeneous anisotropic media, and the transport equation is discretized by a first order upwind scheme combined with an Euler explicit integration in time. The parallelization is based on the SPMD (Single Program, Multiple Data) paradigm and relies on a distribution of the mesh on the processes with one layer of ghost cells in order to allow for a local assembly of the discrete systems. The linear system for the Darcy flow is solved using different linear solvers and preconditioners implemented in the PETSc and Trilinos libraries. The convergence of the scheme is validated on two original analytical solutions with one and four intersecting fractures. Then, the parallel efficiency of the algorithm is assessed on up to 512 processes with different types of meshes, different matrix fracture permeability ratios, and different levels of complexity of the fracture network.

Abstract: Starting from a parallel between some minimax adaptive tests of a single null hypothesis, based on aggregation approaches, and some tests of multiple hypotheses, we propose a new second kind error-related evaluation criterion, as the core of an emergent minimax theory for multiple tests. Aggregation-based tests, proposed for instance by Baraud [Bernoulli 8 (2002) 577–606], Baraud, Huet and Laurent [Ann. Statist. 31 (2003) 225–251] or Fromont and Laurent [Ann. Statist. 34 (2006) 680–720], are justified through their first kind error rate, which is controlled by the prescribed level on the one hand, and through their separation rates over various classes of alternatives, rates which are minimax on the other hand. We show that some of these tests can be viewed as the first steps of classical step-down multiple testing procedures, and accordingly be evaluated from the multiple testing point of view also, through a control of their Family-Wise Error Rate (FWER). Conversely, many multiple testing procedures, from the historical ones of Bonferroni and Holm, to more recent ones like min-$p$ procedures or randomized procedures such as the ones proposed by Romano and Wolf [J. Amer. Statist. Assoc. 100 (2005) 94–108], can be investigated from the minimax adaptive testing point of view. To this end, we extend the notion of separation rate to the multiple testing field, by defining the weak Family-Wise Separation Rate and its stronger counterpart, the Family-Wise Separation Rate (FWSR). As for nonparametric tests of a single null hypothesis, we prove that these new concepts allow an accurate analysis of the second kind error of a multiple testing procedure, leading to clear definitions of minimax and minimax adaptive multiple tests. Some illustrations in classical Gaussian frameworks corroborate several expected results under particular conditions on the tested hypotheses, but also lead to new questions and perspectives.

Abstract: The goal of this PhD is to study a generalisation of a model describing the interaction between a single particle and its environment. We consider an infinite number of particles represented by their distribution function. The environment is modelled by a vibrating scalar field which exchanges energy with the particles. In the single particle case, after a large time, the particle behaves as if it were subjected to a linear friction force driven by the environment. The equations that we obtain for a large number of particles are close to the Vlasov equation. In the first chapter, we prove that our new system has a unique solution. We then care about some asymptotic issues; if the wave velocity in the medium goes to infinity, adapting the scaling of the interaction, we connect our system with the Vlasov equation. Changing also continuously a function that parametrizes the model, we also connect our model with the attractive Vlasov-Poisson equation. In the second chapter, we add a diffusive term in our equation. It means that we consider that the particles are subjected to a friction force and a Brownian motion. Our main result states that the distribution function converges to the unique equilibrium distribution of the system. We also establish the diffusive limit making the wave velocity go to infinity at the same time. We find a simpler equation satisfied by the spatial density. In chapter 3, we prove the validity of both equations studied in the two first chapters by a mean field limit. The last chapter is devoted to studying the large time asymptotic properties of the equation that we obtained on the spatial density in chapter 2. Les équations obtenus pour un grand nombre de particules sont proches des équations de Vlasov. Dans un premier chapitre, on montre d'abord l'existence et l'unicité des solutions puis on s'intéresse à certains régimes asymptotiques; en faisant tendre la vitesse des ondes dans le milieu vers l'infini et en redimensionnant les échelles, on obtient à la limite une équation de Vlasov, on montre que si l'on modifie en plus une fonction paramètrisant le système, on obtient l'équation de Vlasov-Poisson attractive. Dans un deuxième chapitre, on ajoute un terme de diffusion à l'équation. Cela correspond à prendre en compte une agitation brownienne et un frottement linéaire sur les particules. Le principal résultat de ce chapitre est la convergence de la distribution de particules vers une unique distribution stationnaire. On montre la limite de diffusion pour ce nouveau système en faisant tendre simultanément la vitesse de propagation vers l'infini. On obtient une équation plus simple pour la densité spatiale. Dans le chapitre 3, nous montrons la validité des équations déjà étudiées par une limite de champ moyen. Dans le dernier chapitre, on étudie l'asymptotique en temps long de l'équation décrivant l'évolution de la densité spatiale obtenue dans le chapitre 2, des résultats faibles de convergence sont obtenus

Dans un premier chapitre, on montre d'abord l'existence et l'unicité des solutions puis on s'intéresse à certains régimes asymptotiques; en faisant tendre la vitesse des ondes dans le milieu vers l'infini et en redimensionnant les échelles, on obtient à la limite une équation de Vlasov, on montre que si l'on modifie en plus une fonction paramètrisant le système, on obtient l'équation de Vlasov-Poisson attractive. Dans un deuxième chapitre, on ajoute un terme de diffusion à l'équation. Cela correspond à prendre en compte une agitation brownienne et un frottement linéaire sur les particules. Le principal résultat de ce chapitre est la convergence de la distribution de particules vers une unique distribution stationnaire. On montre la limite de diffusion pour ce nouveau système en faisant tendre simultanément la vitesse de propagation vers l'infini. On obtient une équation plus simple pour la densité spatiale. Dans le chapitre 3, nous montrons la validité des équations déjà étudiées par une limite de champ moyen. Dans le dernier chapitre, on étudie l'asymptotique en temps long de l'équation décrivant l'évolution de la densité spatiale obtenue dans le chapitre 2, des résultats faibles de convergence sont obtenus

Abstract: republié dans Lecture Notes Computer Science Bioinformatics series (LNCS); International audience; There exists many ways to connect two, three or more neu-rons together to form different graphs. We call archetypes only the graphs whose properties can be associated with specific classes of biologically relevant structures and behaviors. These archetypes are supposed to be the basis of typical instances of neuronal information processing. To model different representative archetypes and express their temporal properties, we use a synchronous programming language dedicated to reactive systems (Lustre). The properties are then automatically validated thanks to several model checkers supporting data types. The respective results are compared and depend on their underlying abstraction methods.

Abstract: International audience; Recent developments and achievements of the EUROfusion Code Development for Integrated Modelling project (WPCD), which aim is to provide a validated integrated modelling suite for the simulation and prediction of complete plasma discharges in any tokamak, are presented. WPCD develops generic complex integrated simulations, workflows, for physics applications, using the standardized European Integrated Modelling (EU-IM) framework. Selected physics applications of EU-IM workflows are illustrated in this paper.

Abstract: The works presented in this thesis are devoted to the study of partial differential equations systems (PDE). In particular, we are interested in constrained systems coming from the fluid mechanics field which allow to described, in time and space, physical quantities such as density or speed. In this context, we build models for biology which are then numerically tested. We also present an original numerical method for a road traffic model.In the first part, using the theory of mixtures, we model the development of a photosynthetic micro-algae biofilm. The growth of micro-algae is precisely described by taking into account their composition and their access to nutrients dissolved in the surrounding liquid and light. Then, using numerical simulations, we estimate the biofilm productivity.In the second part, using the mixture theory we propose a model describing the rheology of the large intestine and its mucus layer. Thanks to this model we can give an accurate description of the velocity field induced by intestinal flow. This velocity field will then be used to build a modeldescribing precisely interactions between the intestinal microbiota, the gastric broth and the host. For these two models numerical schemes are proposed and allow a first validation of the models.The last part is devoted to developing an asymptotic preserving scheme for the constraint Aw-Rascle system for road traffic. We present an explicit-implicit method based on a splitting technique in order to approximate the solutions of Aw-Rascle system with constraint, while relaxing the stability condition (CFL).; Les travaux présentés dans cette thèse sont consacrés à l’étude de systèmes d’équations aux dérivées partielles (EDP). En particulier, nous nous intéressons à des systèmes issus de la mécanique des fluides avec contraintes, qui permettent de décrire de manière continue, en temps et en espace, des quantités physiques telles que la densité ou la vitesse. Dans ce cadre, nous construisons des modèles pour la biologie, qu’ensuite nous testons numériquement. Nous proposons également avec des méthodes similaires une approche numérique originale pour un système de trafic routier.Dans une première partie, à l’aide de la théorie des mélanges, nous modélisons le développement d’un biofilm de micro-algues photosynthétiques. La croissance des micro-algues y est précisément décrite, en tenant compte de leur composition et de l’accès aux nutriments dissouts, contenus dans le liquide environnant ainsi que de la lumière. Puis, à l’aide de simulations numériques, nous estimons la productivité du biofilm.Dans la seconde partie, en utilisant la théorie des mélanges, nous proposons un modèle permettant de décrire la rhéologie du gros intestin et de sa couche de mucus. Grâce à ce modèle, nous donnerons une description précise du champ de vitesse, induit par le flux intestinal. Puis, ce champ de vitesse sera utilisé pour construire un modèle décrivant les interactions entre le microbiote intestinal, le bouillon gastrique et l’hôte. Pour ces deux modèles, un schéma numérique est proposé et permet une première validation.Enfin, la dernière partie est consacrée à l’élaboration d’un schéma asymptotic preserving pour le système de trafic routier d’Aw-Rascle avec contrainte. Nous y présentons une méthode explicite-implicite basée sur une technique de splitting permettant d’approcher les solutions du systèmed’Aw-Rascle avec contrainte, tout en réduisant la contrainte de stabilité (CFL).

Abstract: The works presented in this thesis are devoted to the study of partial differential equations systems (PDE). In particular, we are interested in constrained systems coming from the fluid mechanics field which allow to described, in time and space, physical quantities such as density or speed. In this context, we build models for biology which are then numerically tested. We also present an original numerical method for a road traffic model.In the first part, using the theory of mixtures, we model the development of a photosynthetic micro-algae biofilm. The growth of micro-algae is precisely described by taking into account their composition and their access to nutrients dissolved in the surrounding liquid and light. Then, using numerical simulations, we estimate the biofilm productivity.In the second part, using the mixture theory we propose a model describing the rheology of the large intestine and its mucus layer. Thanks to this model we can give an accurate description of the velocity field induced by intestinal flow. This velocity field will then be used to build a modeldescribing precisely interactions between the intestinal microbiota, the gastric broth and the host. For these two models numerical schemes are proposed and allow a first validation of the models.The last part is devoted to developing an asymptotic preserving scheme for the constraint Aw-Rascle system for road traffic. We present an explicit-implicit method based on a splitting technique in order to approximate the solutions of Aw-Rascle system with constraint, while relaxing the stability condition (CFL).; Les travaux présentés dans cette thèse sont consacrés à l’étude de systèmes d’équations aux dérivées partielles (EDP). En particulier, nous nous intéressons à des systèmes issus de la mécanique des fluides avec contraintes, qui permettent de décrire de manière continue, en temps et en espace, des quantités physiques telles que la densité ou la vitesse. Dans ce cadre, nous construisons des modèles pour la biologie, qu’ensuite nous testons numériquement. Nous proposons également avec des méthodes similaires une approche numérique originale pour un système de trafic routier.Dans une première partie, à l’aide de la théorie des mélanges, nous modélisons le développement d’un biofilm de micro-algues photosynthétiques. La croissance des micro-algues y est précisément décrite, en tenant compte de leur composition et de l’accès aux nutriments dissouts, contenus dans le liquide environnant ainsi que de la lumière. Puis, à l’aide de simulations numériques, nous estimons la productivité du biofilm.Dans la seconde partie, en utilisant la théorie des mélanges, nous proposons un modèle permettant de décrire la rhéologie du gros intestin et de sa couche de mucus. Grâce à ce modèle, nous donnerons une description précise du champ de vitesse, induit par le flux intestinal. Puis, ce champ de vitesse sera utilisé pour construire un modèle décrivant les interactions entre le microbiote intestinal, le bouillon gastrique et l’hôte. Pour ces deux modèles, un schéma numérique est proposé et permet une première validation.Enfin, la dernière partie est consacrée à l’élaboration d’un schéma asymptotic preserving pour le système de trafic routier d’Aw-Rascle avec contrainte. Nous y présentons une méthode explicite-implicite basée sur une technique de splitting permettant d’approcher les solutions du systèmed’Aw-Rascle avec contrainte, tout en réduisant la contrainte de stabilité (CFL).

Abstract: The work of this thesis belongs to the field of partial differential equations. More specifically, it is linked to the problematic of scale changes in the context of kinetic of gas. Indeed, knowing that there exists different scales of description for a gas (microscopic, mesoscopic and macroscopic scale), we want to link these different associated scales in a context where some randomness acts, in initial data and/or distributed on all the time interval.In a first part, we establish the rigorous derivation of the linear Boltzmann equation without cut- off starting from a particle system interacting via a potential of infinite range, under particular assumptions of decay, starting from a perturbed equilibrium.The second part deals with the passage from a stochastic BGK model with high-field scaling to a scalar conservation law with stochastic forcing. First, we establish the existence of a solution to the considered BGK model. Under an additional assumption, we prove then the convergence to a kinetic formulation associated to the conservation law with stochastic forcing.In the third part, in a first place, we quantify in the case of discrete velocities the defect of regularity associated to the traditional averaging which are considered in the averaging lemmas. Then, we establish a stochastic averaging lemma in that same case. We apply then the result to the context of Rosseland approximation to establish the diffusive limit associated to this model.Finally, in the last part, we are interested into the numerical study of Uchiyama’s model of square particles with four velocities in dimension two. After adapting the methods of simulation which were developed in the case of hard spheres, we carry out a statistical study of the limits at different scales of this model. We reject the hypothesis of a fractional Brownian motion as diffusive limit.; Les travaux de cette thèse s’inscrivent dans le domaine des équations aux dérivées partielles. Plus particulièrement, ils sont liés à la problématique des changements d’échelle dans le contexte de la cinétique des gaz. En effet, sachant qu’il existe plusieurs niveaux de description pour un gaz (échelles microscopique, mésoscopique et macroscopique), on cherche à relier les différentes échelles associées dans un cadre où une part d’aléa intervient, dans les données initiales et/ou réparti sur tout l’intervalle de temps.Dans une première partie, on établit la dérivation rigoureuse de l’équation de Boltzmann linéaire sans cut-off en partant d’un système de particules interagissant via un potentiel à portée infinie, sous des hypothèses particulières de décroissance, en partant d’un équilibre perturbé.La deuxième partie traite du passage d’un modèle BGK stochastique avec champ fort à une loi de conservation scalaire avec forçage stochastique. D’abord, on établit l’existence d’une solution au modèle BGK considéré. Sous une hypothèse additionnelle, on prouve alors la convergence vers une formulation cinétique associée à la loi de conservation avec forçage stochastique.Au cours de la troisième partie, dans un premier temps, on quantifie dans le cas à vitesses discrètes le défaut de régularité associé aux traditionnelles moyennes considérées dans les lemmes de moyenne. Par la suite, on établit un lemme de moyenne stochastique dans ce même cas. On applique alors le résultat au cadre de l’approximation de Rosseland pour établir la limite diffusive associée à ce modèle.Enfin, dans la quatrième et dernière partie, on s’intéresse à l’étude numérique du modèle de Uchiyama de particules carrées à quatre vitesses en dimension deux. Après avoir adapté les méthodes de simulation développées dans le cas des sphères dures, on effectue une étude statistique des limites à différentes échelles de ce modèle. On rejette alors l’hypothèse d’un mouvement Brownien fractionnaire comme limite diffusive.

Abstract: International audience; This contribution consists of two main parts: non-local dispersion models and the numerical modeling of single electron beams. Both subjects are discussed in the context of computational nanophotonics for metallic nano-structures. Non-local dispersion models take into account the non-local nature of mutual electron interaction in the electron gas for metallic nano-structures. Contrary to local models (Drude, Drude-Lorentz,...), non-local models allow additional solutions such as electron density waves that can travel inside the metal bulk [1, 2]. However, these effects only appear for structures at the size of 2 nm to 25 nm. Electron beams traveling in the vicinity or inside metallic nano structures excite plasmons. Microscopy techniques like Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) and Cathodoluminescence (CL) are examples of applications. These technologies exploit the electron-plasmon interaction in order to measure plasmonic mode patterns [3]. Both physical aspects are numerically modeled in 3D discontinuous Galerkin time domain (DGTD) framework in order to provide a deeper understanding of the underlying physics.

Abstract: We provide a model for two phase Darcy flow through discrete fracture networks (DFN) in porous media, in which the d−1 dimensional flow in the fractures is coupled with the d dimensional flow in the matrix, leading to the so called hybrid dimensional Darcy flow model. It accounts for fractures acting either as drains or as barriers, since it allows pressure jumps at the matrix-fracture interfaces. The model also permits to treat discontinuous capillary pressure at the material interfaces as well as gravity dominated flow. In particular, it incorporates upwind normal fluxes that are needed to reproduce gravitational segregation inside the DFN. We adapt the Vertex Approximate Gradient (VAG) scheme to this problem, in order to account for anisotropy and heterogeneity aspects as well as for applicability on general meshes. For diphasic flow, we present several test cases, and use VAG to compare our hybrid dimensional model to a hybrid dimensional model that assumes continuous pressure at the matrix fracture interfaces and to the generic equidimensional model, in which fractures have the same dimension as the matrix. This does not only provide quantitative evidence about computational gain, but also leads to deep insight about the quality of the reduced models.

Abstract: This paper deals with microwave tomography for brain stroke imaging using state-of-the-art numerical modeling and massively parallel computing. Microwave tomographic imaging requires the solution of an inverse problem based on a minimization algorithm (e.g. gradient based) with successive solutions of a direct problem such as the accurate modeling of a whole-microwave measurement system. Moreover, a sufficiently high number of unknowns is required to accurately represent the solution. As the system will be used for detecting the brain stroke (ischemic or hemorrhagic) as well as for monitoring during the treatment, running times for the reconstructions should be reasonable. The method used is based on high-order finite elements, parallel preconditioners from the Domain Decomposition method and Domain Specific Language with open source FreeFEM++ solver.

Abstract: We introduce a novel method to compute approximations of contour integrals.The new method is based on the coarea formula in combination with a Galerkin projection.As such it fits seamlessly into the spirit of hp/spectral finite element methods and circumvents the expensive and technical computation of contours.We provide convergence estimates showing that high order convergence can be achieved provided the data is sufficiently smooth.The theoretical results are supplemented by extensive numerical experiments for an example application from plasma modeling in nuclear fusion.

Abstract: International audience; We present recent advancements of the development of our DGTD solvers for computational nanophotonics, particularly for metallic nanostructures irradiated by laser pulses or electron beams. By this means, we firstly discuss the numerical treatment of a nonlocal dispersion model for the electron gas which is necessary for structures in the regime of 2 nm to 25 nm. Subsequently, we deal with the modeling of electron beams in 3D simulations for e.g. electron energy loss spectroscopy or cathodoluminescence.

Abstract: International audience; Recent advances in fabrication technologies of metallic nanostructures have opened a new branch of nanophotonics. Those structures show significantly different behaviour compared to the mi- crowave regime due to the negative refraction index of noble metals at optical frequencies. Popular applications are for example light harvesting, cancer therapy, molecule sensoring, light guid- ing, higher harmonic generation, and enhanced spontaneous emission. However, since many effects take place in the evanescent near field, special measurement techniques are required in order to investigate those structures.This work is dedicated to the numerical modeling of electron beam based microscopy techniques like Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy (EELS) and Cathodoluminescence (CL).

Abstract: International audience; In the framework of the EUROfusion Work Package on Code Development for Integrated Modelling, a scientific Kepler workflow for the reconstructionof Tokamak plasma equilibrium was developed. It includes consolidated reconstruction codes such as EQUAL, CLISTE, EQUINOX and post-processing error bar estimator SDSS, all using the same physics and machine data ontology and methods for accessing the data used in the European Integrated Modelling (EU-IM) framework [6]. Presently implemented modules (actors) are interfaced to “data bundles” e.g. magnetic sensors, Thomson scattering diagnostics as well as poloidal field coil data, are packed into a “machine bundle”, to facilitate the data exchange in the workflow through selfconsistent datasets. The reconstruction codes feature polynomial or spline (natural or Bspline) representation for the profiles and non-uniform spatially distributed knots for the equilibrium regularisations are implemented. Equilibrium reconstructions relying on magnetics data only (magnetic diagnostic, PF/TF coils and iron core) or with added internal data (motional Stark effect, polarimetry or pressure) may be performed. For pedestal top/edge pressure profile assisted reconstructions, pre-processing of the experimental density and temperature data presently includes a median filter and time average around the time of interest, mapped to the flux coordinates obtained for that time in the previous (magnetics only) reconstruction. Ion density is assumed to be proportional to electron density and fast particle density is assumed negligible

Abstract: International audience; The understanding of Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities is quite essential for the optimization of magnetically confined plasma. For example, the ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) scenario is expected to generate oscillations in the plasma core, modes around the outward limit of the plasma confinement zone, or local reconfiguration of the magnetic field topology. Numerical simulations play an important role in the investigation of the non-linear behavior of these instabilities and the interpretation of experimental observations. The study of plasma instabilities requires the use of high order methods which can be difficult in the context of finite volume (FV). Hence, the use of finite element methods seems to be reasonable for numerical precision, adaptability and flexibility to complex geometries. Moreover, High order smooth (C1) finite element can be combined with the potential formulation to achieve the solenoidal condition of the magnetic field. As MHD instabilities are usually dominated byconvection, numerical schemes must take into account the effects of unresolved scales in order to insure stability of the numerical approach. In this context, stabilized finite element method (FEM) can provide a useful framework for the numerical approximation. Galerkin finite element gives rise to a centered approximation of differential operators. This is suitable for elliptic like operators but can lead to nonphysical behaviors when flows are dominated by the effect of hyperbolic operators (convection). The variational multi-scale (VMS) formulation provides attractive guidelines for the development of stabilized schemes that take into account the hyperbolic nature of the considered systems. In this frame of work, stabilizationis achieved by an additional contribution to the weak formulation which mimics the effects of the unresolved scales over the resolved ones. The critical point of this strategy is the design of a scaling matrix used to adjust the numerical dissipation such as to preserve the order of accuracy of the Galerkin method. This is very good for smooth solutions however it might generate spurious Gibbs oscillations associated to spectral truncation in the wave-number space. Hence, discontinuity capturing is also often used to enforce the total variation stability where the solution develops sharp gradients. We will present applications to MHD and Reduced-MHD in tokamak (toroidal) geometry using the non-linear finite element code JOREK where the VMS stabilization will be discussed in terms of the Taylor-Galerkin formulation

Abstract: International audience; Nanophotonics is the field of science and technology which aimed at establishing and using the peculiar properties of light and light-matter interaction in various nanostructures. Nanopho-tonics includes all the phenomena that are used in optical sciences for the development of optical devices. Because of its numerous scientific and technological applications (e.g. in relation to telecommunication, energy production and biomedicine), nanophotonics represents an active field of research increasingly relying on numerical modeling beside experimental studies. Plasmonics is a related field to nanophotonics involving metalic nanostructures whose optical scattering is dominated by the response of the conduction electrons [1]. The numerical modeling of light interaction with metallic nanostructures requires to solve the system of time-domain Maxwell equations coupled to appropriate models of physical dispersion in the metal such as the Drude and Drude-Lorentz models. In this talk, we will report on our recent efforts aiming at the development of a family of high order finite element type time-domain solvers for the numerical treatment of nanophotonics applications in the linear regime. The proposed method is an extension of the so-called DGTD (Discontinuous Galerkin Time-Domain) method that was initially proposed for the simulation of electromagnetic wave propagation in non-dispersive heterogeneous media at microwave frequencies [2]-[3]. For the numerical treatment of dispersion models in metals, we have adopted an Auxiliary Differential Equation (ADE) technique leading to solve the time-domain Maxwell equations coupled to a ODEs.

Abstract: International audience; This work proposes a Multiscale Hybrid-Mixed (MHM) method for the Maxwell equation in time domain. The MHM method is a consequence of a hybridization procedure, and emerges as a method that naturally incorporates multiple scales while provides solutions with high-order precision. The computation of local problems is embedded in the upscaling procedure, which are completely independent and thus may be naturally obtained using parallel computation facilities. In this talk, we present the new MHM method for the two-dimensional Maxwell equations in time domain (Transverse Magnetic mode). We address some theoretical aspects of the method and propose an extensive numerical validation. We conclude that the MHM method is naturally shaped to be used in parallel computing environments and appears to be a highly competitive option to handle realistic multiscale hyperbolic boundary value problems with precision on coarse meshes.

Abstract: International audience; The possibility to produce energy by fusion reactions is being studied in experimental devices called tokamaks where charged particles are confined in a toroidal vacuum chamber thanks to a very large magnetic field. The ITER device currently build in Cadarache (France) will be the largest tokamak ever realized for these experiments. The large scale dynamics of charged particles in a tokamak as ITER can be described by the Magneto-HydroDynamics equations (MHD). This system of equations contains as an involution the divergence-free constraint of the magnetic field, div B = 0 that has to be maintained by the numerical approximation. The respect of the divergence-free constraint can be achieved in two different ways. The first class consists in adding to the MHD system penalization terms ensuring that the magnetic field will be solenoidal. The second class consists in formulating the MHD system in term of the vectorial potentiel A that satisfies curl A = B, fulfilling thus automatically the divergence-free constraint. The proposed method is a formulation of the MHD system in term of the mixture of the two former classes. The resulting system is divergence-free constraint preserving and can be approximated by standard Finite Volume methods. Various numerical tests on well-known standard problems in MHD show that this approach is an interesting alternative and opens possibility to use a conservative formulation based on B of the MHD system.

Abstract: International audience; In the last recent years, thanks to the increasing power of the computational machines , the interest in more and more accurate numerical schemes is growing. Methods based on high-order approximations are nowadays the common trend in the computational research community, in particular for CFD applications. This work is focused on Powell-Sabin (PS) finite elements, a finite element method (FEM) based on PS splines. PS splines are piecewise quadratic polynomials with a global C1 continuity , defined on conforming triangulations. Despite its attractive characteristics, so far this scheme hasn't had the attention it deserves. PS splines are adapted to unstructured meshes and, contrary to classical tensor product B-splines, they are particularly suited for local refinement , a crucial aspect in the analysis of highly convective and anisotropic equations. The additional global smoothness of the C1 space has a beneficial stabilization effect in the treatment of advection-dominated equations and leads to a better capturing of thin layers. Finally, unlike most of other typology of high-order finite elements, the numerical unknowns in PS elements are located in the vertices of the triangulation, leading to an easy treatment of the parallel aspects. Some geometrical issues related to PS elements are discussed here, in particular, the generation of the control triangles and the imposition of the boundary conditions. The PS FEM method is used to solve the compressible Euler equation in supersonic regime. A classical shock-capturing technique is used to reduce the oscillation around the discontinuity, while a variational multiscale formulation is used to introduce numerical diffusion in the streamwise direction. Some typical numerical examples are used to evaluate the performance of the PS discretization.

Abstract: The understanding of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities is quite essential for the optimization of magnetically confined plasmas, a subject raising increasing interest as tokamak reactor design advances and projects such as ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) develop. Given the need and importance of numerically simulating and studying these instabilities, in this paper we report our effort in developing a stabilized full MHD numerical model to study tokamak plasmas in the frame of the Variational Multi-Scale formulation (VMS). Special attention is given to the plasma equilibrium calculation in limiter and x-point configurations. Several properties of the internal kink instability for a circular geometry were studied, e.g., dependence of the growth rate and mode sizes on the Reynolds Magnetic number and magnetic reconnection. The test cases were compared to other results numerically obtained before, as well as analytical developments. The effects of the VMS stabilization were rigorously verified in order to ensure a numerical stability without supressing the physical instabilities. The validation of this model gives rise to the possibility of simulating Edge-localized modes instabilities in the frame of full MHD equations.

Abstract: International audience; The aim of this paper is to develop new optimized Schwarz algorithms for the one dimensional Schrödinger equation with linear and nonlinear potential. The classical algorithm is an iterative process. In case of time-independent linear potential, we construct explicitly the interface problem and use direct LU method on the interface problem. The algorithm therefore turns to be a direct process. Thus, the algorithm is independent of transmission condition and the numerical computation is smaller. To our knowledge, this is the first time that the Schwarz algorithm is constructed as direct process. Concerning the case of time-dependent linear potential or nonlinear potential, we propose to use a pre-processed linear operator as preconditioner which leads to a preconditioned algorithm. Numerically, the convergence is also independent of the transmission condition. In addition, both of these new algorithms implemented in parallel cluster are robust, scalable up to 256 sub domains (MPI process) and take much less computation time than the classical one, especially for the nonlinear case.

Abstract: International audience; We investigate numerically the two dimensional travelling waves of the Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation for a general nonlinearity and with nonzero condition at infinity. In particular, we are interested in the energy-momentum diagrams. We propose a numerical strategy based on the variational structure of the equation. The key point is to characterize the saddle points of the action as minimizers of another functional, that allows us to use a gradient flow. We combine this approach with a continuation method in speed in order to obtain the full range of velocities. Through various examples, we show that even though the nonlinearity has the same behaviour as the well-known Gross-Pitaevskii nonlinearity, the qualitative properties of the travelling waves may be extremely different. For instance, we observe cusps, a modified (KP-I) asymptotic in the transonic limit, various multiplicity results and ''one dimensional spreading'' phenomena.

Abstract: International audience; This work proposes a Multiscale Hybrid-Mixed (MHM) method for the Maxwell equation in time domain. The MHM method is a consequence of a hybridization procedure, and emerges as a method that naturally incorporates multiple scales while provides solutions with high-order precision. The computation of local problems is embedded in the upscaling procedure, which are completely independent and thus may be naturally obtained using parallel computation facilities.In this talk, we present the new MHM method for the two-dimensional Maxwell equations in time domain (Transverse Magnetic mode). We address some theoretical aspects of the method and propose an extensive numerical validation. We conclude that the MHM method is naturally shaped to be used in parallel computing environments and appears to be a highly competitive option to handle realistic multiscale hyperbolic boundary value problems with precision on coarse meshes.

Abstract: International audience; We propose a numerical scheme for the simulation of fluid-particles flows with two incompressible phases. The numerical strategy is based on a finite volume discretization on staggered grids, with a flavor of kinetic schemes in the definition of the numerical fluxes. We particularly pay attention to the difficulties related to the volume conservation constraint and to the presence of a close-packing term which imposes a threshold on the volume fraction of the disperse phase. We are able to identify stability conditions on the time step to preserve this threshold and the energy dissipation of the original model. The numerical scheme is validated with the simulation of sedimentation flows.

Abstract: Data assimilation is the domain at the interface between observations and models, which makes it possible to identify the global structure of a geophysical system from a set of discrete space-time data. After recalling state-of-the-art data assimilation methods, the variational 4DVAR algorithm and sequential Kalman filters, but also the Back and Forth Nudging (BFN) algorithm, we present the Diffusive Back and Forth Nudging (DBFN) algorithm, which is a natural extension of the BFN to some particular diffusive models. We numerically test the DBFN and compare it with other methods on both a 2D shallow water model, and a 3D full primitive ocean model. These numerical results show that the DBFN converges very quickly. Its main advantage is to filter the observation noise, unlike the BFN algorithm, particularly when the model diffusion is high.

Abstract: In this paper we analyze a system of PDEs recently introduced in [P. Amorim, {\it Modeling ant foraging: a {chemotaxis} approach with pheromones and trail formation}], in order to describe the dynamics of ant foraging. The system is made of convection-diffusion-reaction equations, and the coupling is driven by chemotaxis mechanisms. We establish the well-posedness for the model, and investigate the regularity issue for a large class of integrable data. Our main focus is on the (physically relevant) two-dimensional case with boundary conditions, where we prove that the solutions remain bounded for all times. Abstract: International audience; We investigate several distribution-free dependence detection procedures, all based on a shuffling of the trials, from a statistical point of view. The mathematical justification of such procedures lies in the bootstrap principle and its approximation properties. In particular, we show that such a shuffling has mainly to be done on centered quantities-that is, quantities with zero mean under independence-to construct correct p-values, meaning that the corresponding tests control their false positive (FP) rate. Thanks to this study, we introduce a method, named permutation UE, which consists of a multiple testing procedure based on permutation of experimental trials and delayed coincidence count. Each involved single test of this procedure achieves the prescribed level, so that the corresponding multiple testing procedure controls the false discovery rate (FDR), and this with as few assumptions as possible on the underneath distribution, except independence and identical distribution across trials. The mathematical meaning of this assumption is discussed, and it is in particular argued that it does not mean what is commonly referred in neuroscience to as cross-trials stationarity. Some simulations show, moreover, that permutation UE outperforms the trial-shuffling of Pipa and Grün ( 2003 ) and the MTGAUE method of Tuleau-Malot et al. ( 2014 ) in terms of single levels and FDR, for a comparable amount of false negatives. Application to real data is also provided.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper we study the diffusion approximation of a swarming model given by a systemof interacting Langevin equations with nonlinear friction. The diffusion approximationrequires the calculation of the drift and diffusion coefficients that are given as averages ofsolutions to appropriate Poisson equations. We present a new numerical method for computingthese coefficients that is based on the calculation of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctionsof a Schrodinger operator. These theoretical results are supported by numerical simulationsshowcasing the efficiency of the method.

Abstract: International audience; In this article, we study a one-dimensional hyperbolic quasi-linear model of chemotaxis with a non-linear pressure and we consider its stationary solutions, in particular with vacuum regions. We study both cases of the system set on the whole line $\Er$ and on a bounded interval with no-flux boundary conditions. In the case of the whole line $\Er$, we find only one stationary solution, up to a translation, formed by a positive density region (called bump) surrounded by two regions of vacuum. However, in the case of a bounded interval, an infinite of stationary solutions exists, where the number of bumps is limited by the length of the interval. We are able to compare the value of an energy of the system for these stationary solutions. Finally, we study the stability of these stationary solutions through numerical simulations.

Abstract: Existing finite element implementations for the computation of free-boundary axisymmetric plasma equilibria approximate the unknown poloidal flux function by standard {lowest order} continuous finite elements with discontinuous gradients. \hh{As a consequence,} the location of critical points of the poloidal flux, that are of paramount importance in tokamak engineering, is constrained to nodes of the mesh \hh{leading} to undesired jumps in transient problems. Moreover, recent numerical results for the self-consistent coupling of equilibrium with resistive diffusion and transport suggest the necessity of higher regularity when approximating the flux map.In this work we propose a mortar element method that employs two overlapping meshes. One mesh with Cartesian quadrilaterals covers the vacuum \rfA{chamber domain accessible by the plasma} and one mesh with triangles discretizes the region outside. The two meshes overlap in a narrow region. This approach gives the flexibility to achieve easily and at low cost higher order regularity for the approximation of the flux function in the domain covered by the plasma, while preserving accurate meshing of the geometric details \hh{outside this region}. The continuity of the numerical solution in the region of overlap is weakly enforced by a mortar-like \hh{mapping}.; En éléments finis, les applications existantes pour le calcul d’équilibres de plasma à frontière libre en axisymétrique approchent le flux poloidale par une fonction continue à gradient discontinu, qui est localement dans chaque élément du maillage un polynôme de degré un. La position des points critiques du flux poloidale, qui est de grande importance pour les ingénieurs des tokamaks, est par consequence limitée aux seuls nœuds du maillage, et donc à l’origine de perturbations quand on modélise le passage du plasma du transitoire vers l’équilibre. De plus, des résultats numériques recents sur le couplage à l’équilibre entre le plasma et un modèle de diffusion/transport ont montré le besoin de plus de régularité dans l’approximation du flux. Dans ce travail on propose une approche par méthode d’éléments finis avec joints sur deux maillages qui se recouvrent. Un maillage structuré composé de rectangles qui couvre la chambre à vide du tokamak et un maillage non structuré de triangles pour la partie du domaine qui se trouve à l’extérieur de la chambre à vide. Les deux maillages sont superposés sur une bande étroite qui entoure la chambre à vide. Cet approche est assez flexible pour permettre d’avoir facilement et à bas coût numérique une approximation du flux poloidale plus régulière dans la chambre à vide tout en gardant une description precise des détails géométriques dans la partie externe. La continuité de la solution numérique dans la partie de recouvrement des maillages est imposée faiblement à l’aide de projections de type mortar.

Abstract: Avoiding excessive structure heat loads in future fusion tokamaks is regarded as one of the greatest design challenges. In this paper, we aim at developing a tool to study how the severe divertor heat loads can be mitigated by reconfiguring the magnetic confinement. For this purpose, a free boundary equilibrium code is integrated with a plasma edge transport code to work in an automated fashion. Next, a practical and efficient adjoint based sensitivity calculation is proposed to evaluate the sensitivities of the integrated code. The sensitivity calculation is finally applied to a realistic test case and compared with finite difference sensitivity calculations.

Abstract: In this paper are analyzed finite element methods based on Powell-Sabin splines, for the solution of partial differential equations in two dimensions. PS splines are piecewise quadratic polynomials defined on a triangulation of the domain, and exhibit a global C1 continuity. Critical issues when dealing with PS splines, and described in this work, are the construction of the shape functions and the imposition of the boundary conditions. The PS finite element method is used at first to solve an elliptic problem describing plasma equilibrium in a tokamak. Finally, a transient convective problem is also considered, and a stabilized formulation is presented.

Abstract: International audience; Using the spectral element method (SEM), or more generally hp-finite elements, it is possible to solve with high accuracy various kinds of problems governed by partial differential equations (PDEs). However, as soon as the physical domain is not polygonal the accuracy quickly deteriorates if curved elements are not implemented. For the Fekete-Gauss TSEM (T, for triangle), i.e. that makes use of Fekete points for interpolation and Gauss points for quadrature, the importance of a good choice of the bending procedure is pointed out by comparing different isoparametric mappings for the Poisson and Grad-Shafranov PDEs.

Abstract: International audience; We are interested in a kinetic equation intended to describe the interaction of particles with their environment. The environment is modeled by a collection of local vibrational degrees of freedom. We establish the existence of weak solutions for a wide class of initial data and external forces. We also identify a relevant regime which allows us to derive, quite surprisingly, the attractive Vlasov–Poisson system from the coupled Vlasov-Wave equations.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper we study the diffusion approximation of a swarming model given by a systemof interacting Langevin equations with nonlinear friction. The diffusion approximationrequires the calculation of the drift and diffusion coefficients that are given as averages ofsolutions to appropriate Poisson equations. We present a new numerical method for computingthese coefficients that is based on the calculation of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctionsof a Schrodinger operator. These theoretical results are supported by numerical simulationsshowcasing the efficiency of the method.
