Coal fly ash (CFA), hazardous to the environment and human health, has been considered to be a potential alternative source for rare earth elements (REEs) in recent years. However, information on how REEs distribute and occur in coal fly ash is still incomplete. In this work, particle size analysis, inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy, and electron probe microanalysis were applied to study the occurrence and distribution of REEs in a fly ash sample from the Qianxi coal-fired power plant in Guizhou province. The results show that the REEs content in the CFA was 630.51 ppm. Wet grinding-enhanced leaching experiments revealed that a part of the rare earth particles was encapsulated within the glass body. These rare earth particles could be liberated and released to a certain extent by wet grinding, which would increase the acid-leaching recovery of REEs from 23.49% to 41.68%. This study classifies the speciation of REEs in coal fly ash as (1) amorphous glassy particles with REE minerals or compounds encapsulated inside; (2) amorphous glassy particles with REEs distributed throughout; and (3) discrete REE minerals or compounds. The results of this study are a basis for developing an economically viable and environmentally sustainable technology for recovering REEs from CFA.

Background: Panax notoginseng Saponins (PNS) is used as a traditional Chinese medicine for ischemic stroke and cardiovascular disease; it has been proven to possess anticancer activity recently. Objective: In this study, we aimed to explore the curative anticancer effect and potential mechanisms of PNS in pancreatic cancer cells. Methods: Pancreatic cancer Miapaca2 and PANC-1 cells were treated with PNS and Gemcitabine (Gem), respectively. Then the cell viability was assessed by CCK-8 assay, cell proliferation was tested by colony formation assay and EdU cell proliferation assay, cell migration and invasiveness were tested by wound healing assay and transwell assay respectively, and cell apoptosis was detected by flow cytometry. Finally, we detected the expression levels of proteins related to migration, apoptosis and autophagy through Western blotting. Results: PNS not only inhibited the proliferation, migration, invasion and autophagy of Miapaca2 and PANC-1 cells, but also induced apoptosis and promoted chemosensitivity of pancreatic cancer cells to Gem. Conclusion: PNS may exhibit cytotoxicity and increase chemosensitivity of pancreatic cancer cells to Gem by inhibiting autophagy and inducing apoptosis, providing a new strategy and potential treatment option for pancreatic cancer.

A one-pot, base-mediated approach to Acanthus ilicifolius Linn alkaloid 2-benzoxazolinone derivatives is developed. Starting from trichloroacetic acid, o-aminophenol, substituted benzaldehydes and alkyl isocyanides, the desired 2-benzoxazolinone derivatives are obtained in good yields via a tandem Ugi condensation and intramolecular haloform cyclization at room temperature in the presence of Et3N.

Purpose To report the anatomic and functional outcomes of autologous retinal transplantation (ART). Design Multicenter, retrospective, interventional, consecutive case series. Participants One hundred thirty eyes of 130 patients undergoing ART for the repair of primary and refractory macular holes (MHs), as well as combined MH-rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (MH-RRD), between January 2017 and December 2019. Methods All patients underwent pars plana vitrectomy and ART, with surgeon modification of intraoperative variables. A large array of preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative data was collected. Two masked reviewers graded OCT images. Multivariate statistical analysis and subgroup analysis were performed. Main Outcome Measures Macular hole closure rate, visual acuity (VA), external limiting membrane and ellipsoid zone (EZ) band integrity, and alignment of neurosensory layers (ANL) on OCT. Results One hundred thirty ART surgeries were performed by 33 vitreoretinal surgeons worldwide. Patient demographics were: mean age of 63 ± 6.3 years, 58% female, 41% White, 23% Black, 19% Asian, and 17% Latino. Preoperative VA was 1.37 ± 0.12 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR; Snellen equivalent, approximately 20/500), which improved significantly to 1.05 ± 0.09 logMAR (Snellen equivalent, approximately 20/225; P Conclusions In this global experience, patients undergoing ART for large primary and refractory MHs and MH-RRDs achieved good anatomic and functional outcomes, with low complication rates despite complex surgical pathologic features.

This paper explores applications of the coordinated multi-point (CoMP) architecture operation of enhanced node B (eNB) in wireless communication networks featuring device-to-device (D2D) signaling. This is applied to cellular phone coverage for rapid mass transit systems, such as the Taiwan high speed rail transport system, and indoor public environments. The paper is based on formulas pertaining to the link between budget design and guidelines, as well as principles and theories of engineering practice, allowing designers to analyze and fully control the uplink and downlink signals and output power of fiber repeaters linking cellular phones to base stations. Finally, we employ easily installed cellular-over-fiber optic solutions for a small cell enhancement (SCE) system with novel architecture based on a leakage coaxial cable system using LTE-A technology. As a result, we successfully applied enhanced coverage designs for distributed antenna systems. These can be used to create self-organizing networks (SoN) for an Internet of Things.

With the increasing awareness of green energy, electric vehicles have become the future trend, with lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) regarded as the most suitable energy storage carrier. Therefore, more and more research topics are focused on LIBs, and all parties are working hard to improve the performance of LIBs. Yet, the safety concerns caused by the failure of LIBs cannot be ignored. LIBs themselves are energetic materials, and the causes of accidents often go through multistage irreversible reactions. Several studies have also pointed out that the electrolyte has a significant correlation with the response characteristics because, in the process of LIBs thermal runaway, the electrolyte participating in the oxidation of the entire battery leads to a considerable amount of heat and even runaway reaction as well. Accordingly, it is necessary to obtain a safer electrolyte by modification. In this study, a significant flame retardant (FR) additive, tris (2,2,2-trifluoroethyl) phosphite (TTFP), is used to suppress lithium-ion battery fires or even explosions and maintain typical battery performance. The performance of the electrolyte was tested by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analyzer, and the electrolysis was examined on liquid flash point (FP), self-extinguishing time (SET), and conductivity. During the heating process, adding TTFP to the electrolyte effectively delayed the exothermic peak, reduced the amount of heat, improved the FP, and curtailed the SET. The hazard degree of the electrolyte under high-temperature environment was much lower than before adding the additives, and the additives were finally obtained. It can conclusively prove the safety of lithium batteries without lessening the practical performance of the batteries.

Background Chronic kidney disease has been identified as a risk factor affecting stroke prognosis. High-grade carotid artery stenosis (CAS) is associated with distal hemodynamic compromise. The association between the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and ischemic stroke (IS) outcome in patients with high-grade CAS remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the association between eGFR and outcomes of acute IS patients with high-grade CAS. Methods From January 1, 2007 to April 30, 2012, we enrolled 372 acute IS patients with high-grade CAS and prospectively observed them for 5 years. The eGFR on admission was assessed using the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease Study equation. Demographic features, vascular risk factors, comorbidities, and outcomes were compared between different eGFR levels. Results Among 372 individuals, 76 (20.4%) had an eGFR 2. Compared to other groups, in the eGFR 2 group, the prevalence rates of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, valvular heart disease, and gout were significantly higher (P = 0.013, P = 0.030, P = 0.001, P P = 0.043, and P 2 demonstrated lower hemoglobin and total cholesterol levels compared with other groups (P P = 0.048). The blood potassium and uric acid levels were significantly higher in patients with eGFR 2 (P P 2 was a significant risk factor for 5-year all-cause mortality in IS patients with high-grade CAS after adjusting for these variables (hazard ratio = 2.05; 95% CI = 1.31–3.21; P = 0.002). Conclusions eGFR 2 was associated with an increased risk of 5-year all-cause mortality in acute IS patients with high-grade CAS. Whether aggressive treatment of chronic kidney disease in IS patients with high-grade CAS can improve stroke outcomes should be confirmed in future studies.

ObjectiveTo implement an all-day online artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted detection of ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) by prehospital 12-lead electrocardiograms (ECGs) to facilitate patient triage for timely reperfusion therapy.MethodsThe proposed AI model combines a convolutional neural network and long short-term memory (CNN-LSTM) to predict STEMI on prehospital 12-lead ECGs obtained from mini-12-lead ECG devices equipped in ambulance vehicles in Central Taiwan. Emergency medical technicians (EMTs) from the 14 AI-implemented fire stations performed the on-site 12-lead ECG examinations using the mini portable device. The 12-lead ECG signals were transmitted to the AI center of China Medical University Hospital to classify the recordings as “STEMI” or “Not STEMI”. In 11 non-AI fire stations, the ECG data were transmitted to a secure network and read by available on-line emergency physicians. The response time was defined as the time interval between the ECG transmission and ECG interpretation feedback.ResultsBetween July 17, 2021, and March 26, 2022, the AI model classified 362 prehospital 12-lead ECGs obtained from 275 consecutive patients who had called the 119 dispatch centers of fire stations in Central Taiwan for symptoms of chest pain or shortness of breath. The AI's response time to the EMTs in ambulance vehicles was 37.2 ± 11.3 s, which was shorter than the online physicians' response time from 11 other fire stations with no AI implementation (113.2 ± 369.4 s, P < 0.001) after analyzing another set of 335 prehospital 12-lead ECGs. The evaluation metrics including accuracy, precision, specificity, recall, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve, and F1 score to assess the overall AI performance in the remote detection of STEMI were 0.992, 0.889, 0.994, 0.941, 0.997, and 0.914, respectively. During the study period, the AI model promptly identified 10 STEMI patients who underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PPCI) with a median contact-to-door time of 18.5 (IQR: 16–20.8) minutes.ConclusionImplementation of an all-day real-time AI-assisted remote detection of STEMI on prehospital 12-lead ECGs in the field is feasible with a high diagnostic accuracy rate. This approach may help minimize preventable delays in contact-to-treatment times for STEMI patients who require PPCI.

This study applies the unit tsunami method and probabilistic tsunami hazard analysis to investigate the tsunami hazard for the southern region of Pingtung County in southern Taiwan. The FUNWAVE-TVD model is used to calculate the aleatory and epistemic uncertainties. The aleatory uncertainty is analyzed using a comparison of simulated and observed maximum tsunami wave heights and the epistemic uncertainty is evaluated using a scenario caused by earthquakes in the Manila and Ryukyu subduction zones according to probabilistic seismic hazard analysis in Taiwan using Senior Seismic Hazard Analysis Committee Level 3 methodology. A unit tsunami method database is established for the Manila and Ryukyu subduction zones and used to carry out a probability-based offshore tsunami wave height simulation for the southern region of Pingtung County. A hazard map for tsunamis caused by earthquakes in the Manila and Ryukyu subduction zones is also derived.

Infectious keratitis (IK) represents a major cause of corneal blindness. This study aims to investigate the demographics, risk factors, microbiological characteristics and antibiotic susceptibility patterns of IK in Taiwan over the past 15 years. A retrospective population-based study was conducted using the Chang Gung Research Database. Patients with IK were identified by diagnostic codes for corneal ulcer from 2004 to 2019. Of 7807 included subjects, 45.2% of patients had positive corneal cultures. The proportion of contact lens-related IK declined, while that of IK related to systemic diseases grew. The percentage of isolated gram-positive bacteria surpassed that of gram-negative bacteria in the 15-year period. The prevalence of Pseudomonas aeruginosa showed a decreasing trend (p = 0.004), whereas coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CNS) and Propionibacterium species were increasingly detected (p < 0.001). Overall, the trend of antibiotic susceptibility of both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria did not change throughout the study period. The susceptibility to the test antibiotics maintained over 90% in gram-negative isolates during 15 years. Vancomycin preserved 100% susceptibility to all gram-positive isolates. Since most tested antibiotics exhibited stable susceptibility over decades, this study reinforced that fluoroquinolones and fortified vancomycin continue to be good empiric therapies for treating bacterial keratitis in Taiwan.

Introduction: Tocolytic treatment is beneficial to pregnant women with a risk of premature labor or miscarriage. However, previous reports have shown that progestogen might not be effective and ritodrine may increase the risk of maternal vascular-related diseases. Chinese herbal products (CHP) are used as alternative therapies for pregnant women. The goal was to evaluate the efficacy of combined tocolytic therapy and CHP therapy in pregnancy outcomes for pregnant women in Taiwan.Materials and Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study based on the National Health Insurance Research Database. A total of 47,153 pregnant women treated with tocolytics aged 18–50 years from 2001 to 2015 were selected from two million random samples. According to the medical use of tocolytics and CHP, we divided the users into two groups: western medicine (WM) only (n = 40,961) and WM/CHP (n = 6,192) groups. A propensity score (PS)-matched cohort (6,192 pairs) was established based on baseline confounders. All participants were followed up to perinatal outcomes. Conditional logistic regression analysis was used to examine the effects of CHP use on the odds of miscarriage and preterm birth.Results: The adjusted odds ratio (OR) for premature birth in the WM/CHP group (n = 411, 6.64%) was significantly lower than in the WM group (n = 471, 7,61%) (0,86, 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.74–0.99). Further subgroup analysis based on the usage of formulae that activate blood and remove stasis or purgative formulae, the adjusted OR of preterm birth of those using these formulae was significantly lower in the WM/CHP group (n = 215, 6.32%) than that in the WM group (n = 265, 7.77%) (OR: 0.79, 95% CI: 0.65–0.96).Conclusion: We found that the combination of CHP and tocolytics can be beneficial to pregnant women in the prevention of premature birth. Further research is required to investigate causal relationships.

Background and Purpose Oral anticoagulants (OACs) prevent stroke recurrence and vascular embolism in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and atrial fibrillation (AF). Based on empirical consensus, current guidance recommends a “1–3–6–12 days” rule to resume OACs after AIS. This study investigated the suitability of guideline-recommended timing for OAC initiation. Methods Using data of 12,307 AF patients hospitalized for AIS, for the period 2012 to 2016, in Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database, we constructed a sequence of cohorts of OAC users and propensity score-matched nonusers, creating one cohort on each day of OAC initiation for 30 days since admission. Composite outcome included effectiveness (cardiovascular death, ischemic stroke, myocardial infarction, transient ischemic attack, systemic embolism, and venous thromboembolism) and safety (intracranial hemorrhage, gastrointestinal bleeding, and hematuria) outcomes. Comparing with nonusers, we examined the risks in the early OAC use (within 1–3–6–12 days) or guideline-recommended delayed use. Indirect comparison between the early and delayed use was conducted using mixed treatment comparison. Results Across the AIS severity, the risks of composite or effectiveness outcome were lower in OAC users than nonusers, and the risks were similar between the early and delayed use groups. In patients with severe AIS, early OAC use was associated with an increased risk of safety outcome, with a hazard ratio (HR) of 1.67 (confidence interval [CI]: 1·30–2·13) compared with nonusers and a HR of 1.44 (CI: 0·99–2·09) compared with the delayed use. Conclusion Our study findings support an early OAC initiation in AF patients with mild-to-moderate AIS and a routine delayed use of OACs can be considered in those with severe AIS to avoid a serious bleeding event.

The detection of tumor-related exosomes is of great significance. In this work, a fluorescence aptasensor was designed for the determination of tumor-related exosomes based on the capture of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and specific recognition of an aptamer. MNPs were used as substrates to capture the exosomes by modifying the CD63 antibody on the MNP surface. Probe 1 consists of PDL-1 aptamer sequence and a section of other sequences. PDL-1 expression was observed on the surface of exosomes; the aptamer of PDL-1 could combine with PDL-1 with high affinity. Thus, the immunoassay-type compounds of “MNPs–exosomes–probe 1” were formed. The other section of probe 1 triggered the HCR with probe 2 and probe 3 and formed the super-long dsDNA. The addition of GelRed resulted in the generation of an amplified fluorescence signal. The proposed design demonstrated a good linearity with the exosome concentration ranging from 300 to 107 particles per mL and with a low detection limit of 100 particles per mL. This aptasensor also exhibited high specificity for tumor-related exosomes, and was successfully applied in biological samples.

An electrochemical aptasensor with high sensitivity, specificity, and good intra-day reproducibility is reported to meet the detection needs of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). The toehold-mediated strand displacement recycling amplification and VEGF aptamer are integrated in the biosensor. The probe A is hybridized with the VEGF aptamer to form the probe A–aptamer complex. When VEGF is introduced, the aptamer specifically binds with VEGF, and probe A can be liberated. Then, the free probe A captures the toehold region of the Hp1, leading the exposure of the toehold region on the other end of Hp1. Similarly, Hp2 and Hp3 are also immobilized on the surface of the electrode; thus, the methylene blue labelled on Hp2 and Hp3 causes the current response. With the signal transduction mechanism, the expression level of VEGF can be detected quantitatively. With a series of optimizations of sensor parameters, high sensitivity and specificity of the VEGF detection sensor can be achieved with a detection limit as low as 10 pg mL−1. This significant performance has good intra-day reproducibility, and it can be applied to human biological samples such as serum, urine, and saliva to detect the VEGF content.

Background: The coincidence of coronary artery disease (CAD) and carotid artery stenosis (CAS) was observed. However, the association between pre-existing CAD and ischemic stroke (IS) outcome in patients with high-grade CAS remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the association between pre-existing CAD and outcomes of acute IS patients with high-grade CAS. Methods: From January 1, 2007, to April 30, 2012, we enrolled 372 acute IS patients with high-grade CAS and prospectively observed them for 5 years. Demographic features, vascular risk factors, comorbidities, and outcomes were compared between patients with and without pre-existing CAD. Results: Among 372 individuals, 75 (20.2%) patients had pre-existing CAD and 297 (79.8%) patients did not have pre-existing CAD. The prevalence rates of hypertension, congestive heart failure, chronic kidney disease, and gout in patients with pre-existing CAD were significantly higher than in those without pre-existing CAD (p = 0.017, p < 0.001, p = 0.002, and p < 0.001, respectively). The multivariate Cox proportional hazards model revealed that pre-existing CAD was a significant risk factor for a 5-year all-cause mortality in acute IS patients with high-grade CAS (hazard ratio = 2.26; 95% confidence interval = 1.35–3.79; p = 0.002). Conclusion: Pre-existing CAD was associated with an increased risk of 5-year mortality in acute IS patients with high-grade CAS. Intensive treatment for the pre-existing CAD may reduce long-term mortality in acute IS patients with high-grade CAS.

As integration in mixed methods studies is of great interest, we reviewed published articles between 2007 and 2019 in two major journals of mixed methods research to identify the integration challenges mixed methods researchers experienced. This study contributes to mixed methods by summarizing the reported challenges in empirical mixed methods articles based on the concept of integration. We found mixed methods users’ experienced uncertainty during integration due to lack of guidance and confidence. We advocate that researchers should be proactive in expounding methodological challenges that they confronted in practice and report what they did, how they did it, and why they did it in such ways to approach full integration. By doing this, researchers would make valuable contributions to this methodology’s development.

Highlights • Developed two simple-to use nomograms for identifying COVID-19 positive patients. • Probabilities are provided to allow healthcare leaders to decide suitable cut-offs. • Variables are age, white cell count, chest x-ray appearances and contact history. • Model variables are easily available in the general hospital setting., Objectives To develop:(1) two validated risk prediction models for COVID-19 positivity using readily available parameters in a general hospital setting; (2) nomograms and probabilities to allow clinical utilisation. Methods Patients with and without COVID-19 were included from 4 Hong Kong hospitals. Database was randomly split 2:1 for model development database (n = 895) and validation database (n = 435). Multivariable logistic regression was utilised for model creation and validated with the Hosmer-Lemeshow (H-L) test and calibration plot. Nomograms and probabilities set at 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 were calculated to determine sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV). Results 1330 patients (mean age 58.2 ± 24.5 years; 50.7% males; 296 COVID-19 positive) were recruited. First prediction model developed had age, total white blood cell count, chest x-ray appearances and contact history as significant predictors (AUC = 0.911 [CI = 0.880-0.941]). Second model developed has same variables except contact history (AUC = 0.880 [CI = 0.844-0.916]). Both were externally validated on H-L test (p = 0.781 and 0.155 respectively) and calibration plot. Models were converted to nomograms. Lower probabilities give higher sensitivity and NPV; higher probabilities give higher specificity and PPV. Conclusion Two simple-to-use validated nomograms were developed with excellent AUCs based on readily available parameters and can be considered for clinical utilisation.

Background/Objectives The purpose of this study was to present an association between the treatment response of diabetic macular edema (DME) to intravitreal ranibizumab (IVR) injections and different morphology patterns using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Subjects/Methods This retrospective study included 216 eyes of 142 subjects who received IVR for DME and were observed for at least 2 years. Medical charts and SD-OCT images of consecutive patients were reviewed at baseline, 1, 3, 6, 12, and 24 months after first IVR treatment. The OCT patterns were characterized as diffuse retinal thickening (DRT), cystoid macular edema (CME), serous retinal detachment (SRD), and vitreomacular interface abnormalities (VMIAs). All patients were classified into four groups based on the OCT findings. Results For a total of 216 eyes, 36 eyes were classified into the DRT group, 76 in the CME group, 42 in the SRD group, and 62 in the VMIA group. There were significant central macula thickness (CMT) improvements in all groups at the 1st month and the 2nd year, except for the DRT group at the 2nd year. Patients with OCT findings of hyperreflective dots (HRDs), metabolic parameters of hyperlipidemia, and coronary artery disease (CAD) had significantly less improvements in CMT at 2-year follow-up (P=0.029, 0.007

Heavy metal pollutants pose a serious threat to the environment and the health of organisms. This study explored the basic characteristics of poly (acrylic acid)/acrylamide (PAAAM) hydrogel, and evaluated its application in heavy metal ions removal from simulated and real electroplating wastewater. The results showed that PAAAM displayed the highest swelling ratio and adsorption capacity of 5% AM. The swelling ratio of 5%-AM-PAAAM reached 30000% in pH 4.0–7.0. The adsorption of Cu2+ and Ni2+ reached equilibrium in 60 min, with the maximum adsorption capacities of 159.45 and 107.68 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption kinetics fitted the pseudo-second-order model and the adsorption isotherm followed the Langmuir model, exhibiting an exothermic adsorption process. In competitive removal process, 5%-AM-PAAAM showed selective adsorption to Cu2+ than Ni2+ in aquatic solution. The adsorption mechanism was related to the O-H groups in acrylic acid based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) detection. In summary, 5%-AM-PAAAM was a specific adsorbent for Cu2+ in aquatic solution with high Cu2+ concentration.

BackgroundCytokines are effective molecules of immune reactions. They work in inflammatory sites as well as circulate in the blood. Cytokines in the cerebrospinal fluid have been suggested to be markers of autoimmune encephalitis and reflect disease progression. However, studies on blood cytokines in autoimmune encephalitis are scarce. We report a case presenting with serial changes in blood cytokine levels in a male patient with anti-contactin-associated protein 2 (Caspr2) encephalitis.Case presentationA 61-year-old man without systemic disease presented with ataxia and speech disturbance 1 week. After admission, he further developed visual hallucinations, psychosis, and consciousness deterioration. Brain magnetic resonance imaging and infection and tumor surveillances were negative. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography of brain revealed frontal and occipital hypometabolism and anterior cingulate gyrus and mesial temporal hypermetabolism. Autoimmune studies confirmed Caspr2 antibodies in his blood. After receiving a diagnosis of anti-Caspr2 encephalitis, the patient received steroids, plasmapheresis, and zonisamide. He recovered well and was totally independent 6 months after disease onset.A cytokine profiler array kit was used to investigate neuroimmune mechanisms during the disease course. Several cytokines showed significant changes in plasma levels, such as B cell activating factor for B cell proliferation; thymus and activation-regulated chemokine for T cell chemoattraction; soluble CD40 ligand for Th2 cell mediation; C5/C5a for complement activation; brain-derived neurotrophic factor for neuronal survival response; and dipeptidyl peptidase 4, retinol binding protein, dickkopf-related protein, and epidermal growth factor for response to environmental provocation. The concentration of cytokines was verified using Luminex multiplexing assay.ConclusionsDue to their easy accessibility, blood cytokines are potential biomarkers of autoimmune encephalitis. Based on the investigating platform of this single case study, future larger scale studies are warranted.

Consumers’ attitude toward GM science is not only an important factor to determine the industry’s development, it is also a crucial topic across various countries. How people express their judgment of GM science, involves a highly complicated process. Because of this complexity, influence on attitude toward GM science has become a popular research topic and has been examined through various variables. This study sought to examine the effects of critical thinking styles and perceived transparency of GM science on attitude toward GM science. To fulfill the purpose of the research, an online survey was conducted. A total of 1,047 adults across the United States were recruited using non-probability sampling techniques. The results of the study found critical thinking style had a significant impact on the perceived transparency of GM science information and attitude toward GM science. However, consumers with higher perceived transparency of GM science information reported lower attitudes toward GM science than those who had lower perceived transparency. An interaction effect of critical thinking styles and perceived transparency of GM science on attitude toward GM science was found. Further research examining perceived transparency was recommended. In addition, it was recommended that extension agents or agricultural communicators could develop various communication strategies based on various attribution of consumers.
