Abstract

Coextrusion technologies are commonly used to produce multilayered composite sheets or films with a large range of applications. The contrast of rheological properties between layers can lead to interfacial instabilities during flow. Important theoretical and experimental advances have been made during the last decades on the stability of compatible and incompatible polymers using a mechanical approach. The present study deals with the influence of this affinity on interfacial instabilities for functionalized incompatible polymers between the neighboring layers. Polyamide (PA6)/Polyethylene‐grafted (GMA) or pure PE were studied with different viscosity and elasticity ratios. We have experimentally confirmed, in this case, that the weak disturbance can be predicted by considering an interphase of non‐zero thickness (corresponding to interdiffusion/reaction zone) instead of a purely geometrical interface between the two reactive layers. As a first step, rheological behavior of multilayer coextruded cast films was investigated to probe: (i) the competition between polymer/polymer interdiffusion and the interfacial reaction and (ii) the influence of the interphase. The contribution of this one effect has been studied along with the increase of the number of layers. The results show that the variation in dynamic modulus of the multilayer system reflects both diffusion and chemical reaction. Finally, and in order to quantify the contribution of the effect of the interface/interphase with a specific interfacial area, an expression was developed to take into account the interphase triggered between the neighboring layers and allowed us to estimate its thickness at a specific welding time and shear rate. As the second step, we formulate an experimental strategy to optimize the process by listing the different parameters controlling the stability of the reactive multilayer flows. The plastic films of two, three and five layers were coextruded in symmetrical and asymmetrical configurations in which PA6 is a middle layer. Indeed, for reactive multilayered system, the interfacial flow instability can be reduced or eliminated, for example, by (i) increasing the residence time or temperature in the coextrusion feed block (for T over reaction temperature) and (ii) reducing the total extrusion flow rate. Hence, based on this analysis guide‐lines for stable Coextrusion of reactive functionalized polymers can be provided.

Abstract

International audience; Several studies have recently reported the use of monofunctional octahedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (monofunctional POSS) to modify polymer networks. In most of these studies the final material is depicted as a network with pendent POSS units randomly dispersed in the structure. The aim of this paper is to show that this representation is generally not correct due to the occurrence of a polymerization-induced phase separation (PIPS) process. In this sense, monofunctional POSS are not different from different types of rubbers, thermoplastics, or liquid crystals used to modify polymer networks. Although some authors have noticed the occurrence of PIPS in particular systems, a comparative study of the effect of the chemical structure of POSS and its prereaction with one of the monomers on the morphologies generated has not been previously reported. Glycidyloxypropylheptaisobutyl POSS (iBu-GlyPOSS) and glycidyloxypropyl-heptaphenyl POSS (Ph-GlyPOSS) were used to modify an epoxy network based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and 4,4'-methylenebis(2,6-diethylaniline) (MDEA). POSS was introduced in the formulation either nonreacted or prereacted with MDEA (molar ratio POSS/MDEA: 1/10). While both nonreacted and prereacted iBu-GlyPOSS were soluble in the epoxy-amine precursors at the polymerization temperature (135 °C), only prereacted Ph-GlyPOSS could be dissolved in epoxy-amine precursors. For every case a polymerization-induced phase separation took place. For the nonreacted iBu-GlyPOSS this process led to a dispersion of spherical particles with sizes in the range of the micrometers that crystallized upon cooling. Both prereacted POSS led to different types of amorphous biphasic structures. Therefore, the nature of the organic inert group and the prereaction of a monofunctional POSS can be used to control the morphologies generated in the POSS-modified polymer network.

Abstract

International audience; This paper deals with immiscible blends of poly(ethylene terephthalate) obtained by melt blending with polycarbonate. A large survey of the current knowledge in the field of these blends is presented. Resolved and unresolved issues concerning the effect of exchange reactions on the miscibility of the components are addressed. The experimental part of the paper focuses on the rheological behavior of PET/PC blends. Blends containing various polymer ratios were obtained by melt blending with and without transesterification catalysts. Oscillatory shear flow in the melt was used to characterize the rheology of the various samples. A plot of the oscillatory data, similar to the Van Gurp Palmen plot, is used to point out the broadening of the co-continuity window when in situ compatibilization takes place.

Abstract

International audience; Solid state thermo-mechanical properties, as well as low and large strain mechanical behaviour, of epoxy composites filled with sub-micron pyrogenic silica are discussed in this paper. The reinforcement mechanisms involved are investigated. Two distinct series of pyrogenic silica were used: hydrophilic silica with various specific surface areas and silica grafted with various organo-modifications. Furthermore, two series of networks, having either a high or low crosslink density, and resulting thus either in glassy or rubbery materials at room temperature, were considered. Dynamic mechanical analysis, uniaxial tensile tests and fracture mechanic tests were performed. All our results showed that pyrogenic silica leads to an improvement of network mechanical properties both in the glassy and rubbery states. The simultaneous increase of stiffness and toughness was observed, demonstrating the great potential of pyrogenic silica for the reinforcement of thermosetting systems. This exceptional behaviour has been interpreted in terms of the interactions and morphology developed.

Abstract

International audience; Two PMMA-epoxy-clay ternary composites have been produced combining the polymerization induced phase separation phenomenon with two individual dispersion processing methods: a melt-blending and an ultrasonic-blending. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis shows that phase separation between PMMA and epoxy network was obtained in the form of spherical nodules in both processing methods. Organoclay particles were finely dispersed into thermosetting network and predominantly delaminated in ultrasonic-blending, whereas organoclays formed micrometer-sized aggregates in melt-blending. Wide-angle-X-ray (WAXS) studies reveal that exfoliation in the clay particles in three-phase composite was reached. Exfoliation state has been investigated using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) in cured systems and during curing reaction. For reacted systems, an exfoliation of platelets can occur through the de-aggregation of large agglomerates into smaller particles composed of a few platelets. For in situ SAXS studies, the distribution of the thicknesses of diffusing entities and the evolution of this distribution with reaction time were followed. This technique has shown also that movements at scale of nanometers of clay tactoids are possible even after the gel point.

Abstract

International audience; The evolution of the viscoelastic properties of a molten thermoplastic/thermoset system during the course of the isothermal polymerization of the thermoset precursors has been investigated and modeled. Such systems are initially homogenous and phase separate upon polymerization of the monomers. In the present study, atactic polystyrene (85 and 60 wt%) is blended to a stoichiometric mixture diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A with 4,4′-methylenebis(2,6-diethylaniline). During the polymerization, polystyrene becomes the thermoplastic-rich matrix and an epoxy-rich dispersed phase appears. Both phases experience changes in their composition and viscoelastic properties. A rheokinetic model is proposed to take into account four contributions to the viscoelastic behavior: progressive deplastification of the polystyrene matrix involving a modification of the glass transition and thus of free volume, dilution of the network of entanglements of the matrix by the non yet converted low molar weight molecules, emulsion behavior after the separation of the epoxy-rich phase and finally interparticular interactions being assimilated to a mechanical percolation. Provided that the glass transition temperature of the matrix and the dynamic moduli of the neat components are known, the changes in the viscoelastic behavior of the system with time can be predicted with no ad hoc parameter and model calculations are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Abstract

International audience; Amine and alcohol functional dendritic polymers were used as covalent coupling agents for maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene and their efficiency compared with metallic salt and zinc acetate, acting as an ionic coupling agent. The crosslinking reactions in the molten state were carried out at 150°C in an internal mixer and the resulting modified polyethylenes were characterized by dynamic mechanical analysis and Small angle X-ray Scattering. These agents led to efficient coupling and crosslinking. The covalent coupling reactions were conducted in a heterogeneous multiphase system: The kinetics of crosslinking depends on the nature of the coupling agent: at 150°C, the reactions were completed within 5 min. with the amine hyperbranched polymer and 20 min. with the alcohol functionalized dendritic polymer. The zinc acetate forms ionic interactions with the grafted polyethylene in less than 1 min. Ionic interactions are thermo mechanically reversible; they correspond to electronic density fluctuations evidenced by SAXS

Abstract

Les nanocomposites peuvent etre constitues d'une dispersion de plaquettes ou lamelles generalement argileuses dans une matrice polymere. Ces charges lamellaires sont constituees d'un ensemble de feuillets (type « mille feuilles »). Les dimensions des feuillets individuels sont de l'ordre du nanometre en epaisseur, de plusieurs dizaines de nanometres en largeur, et de plusieurs dizaines de nanometres a quelques micrometres en longueur d'ou leur appellation nanocharges. Ces dimensions leur conferent un coefficient de surface tres eleve (de 100 a 1 000 m 2 · g -1 ) et un tres fort facteur de forme (longueur/epaisseur > 100). Les caracteristiques geometriques de la charge ont une influence determinante sur les proprietes des materiaux polymeres ainsi formules, repertories ici sous l'appellation generale nanocomposites, pour tenir compte de la dimension nanoscopique des charges introduites et a ne pas confondre avec les composites traditionnels du type polymeres/fibres de renforts (exemple: polyester/fibres de verres). Suivant l'etat d'exfoliation et de dispersion de la charge minerale dans la matrice, on peut distinguer trois types de structures minerales: - une structure non exfoliee, lorsque les feuillets restent agglomeres sous forme de paquets (ou d'un cristal) ; - une structure intercalee, avec des feuillets incompletement separes ; - une structure exfoliee (ou delaminee) avec des feuillets individuels bien separes et correctement disperses (ce qui se traduit par une perte de coherence cristalline). Apres quelques generalites sur les nanocharges lamellaires (§ 1 ), nous decrirons successivement les nanocomposites lamellaires: - a base de polyamide (PA), § 2 ; - a base de polypropylene (PP), § 3 ; - a base de polyester (PET), § 4 ; - a matrice epoxyde, § 5.

Abstract

International audience; New supramolecular assemblies based on hyaluronic acid stabilized by divalent β-cyclodextrin/adamantane (β-CD/AD) complexes were synthesized with the aim to compare their viscoelastic behavior in aqueous medium with systems resulting from monovalent complexes. For this purpose, dimers of AD and β-CD to be coupled to hyaluronic acid were prepared by multistep chemical synthetic pathways. Investigation of the complexation properties of these dimers by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) experiments revealed a pronounced increase of the stability constant. These results can be attributed to divalency as suggested by the value of the complexation enthalpy (ΔH0) which is twice that of the monovalent complex, in agreement with literature data. Nevertheless, a decrease of the complexation properties of these dimers when fixed on the polysaccharide backbone was observed as a result of an unfavorable entropy of binding. The viscoelastic properties of the supramolecular assemblies were examined by dynamic rheological measurements, showing different behaviors related to the nature and the energy of the interchain physical junctions.

Abstract

International audience; A general simple algorithm is proposed to determine the average architecture of an acyclic branched polymer macromolecule from its number of branching points, whatever their functionality. The number of branching points can be derived from SEC measurements using a coupling of viscosimetric and refractometric detectors through the use of the Zimm-Stockmayer equation. Since various isomers can be built for a given number of branching points, some basic rules are proposed in order to select the structures that are physically meaningful; the possibility of structural isomers has been also investigated and a probability of presence is assigned to each species starting from the compactness of the molecule. For each species corresponding to a given molecular weight in the sample, the average structure is then obtained from the number of branching points and the universal probability distribution of the isomers.

International audience; The present research investigates the morphology, the mechanical, and the viscoelastic properties of rubbery epoxy/clay nanocomposites synthesized by in situ polymerisation of a prepolymer diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A crosslinked with an aliphatic diamine based on a polyoxypropylene backbone. The inorganic phase was hectorite, exchanged with octadecylammonium ions in order to give organophilic properties to the phyllosilicate. An ultrasonicator was used to disperse the silicate clay layer into epoxy-amine matrix. The morphology of epoxy-hectorite nanocomposites examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that mixed delamination or intercalation or microdispersion could occur depending on type of organoclay. Moreover, the mechanical and viscoelastic properties were found to be improved with only the treated hectorite.

Abstract

The morphology and mechanical and viscoelastic properties of rubbery epoxy/organoclay montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites were investigated with wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), tensile testing, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. An ultrasonicator was used to apply external shearing forces to disperse the silicate clay layers in the epoxy matrix. The first step of the nanocomposite preparation consisted of swelling MMT in a curing agent, that is, an aliphatic diamine based on a polyoxypropylene backbone with a low viscosity for better diffusion into the intragalleries. Then, the epoxy prepolymer was added to the mixture. Better dispersion and intercalation of the nanoclay in the matrix were expected. The organic modification of MMT with octadecylammonium ions led to an increase in the initial d-spacing (the [d001] peak) from 14.4 to 28.5 A, as determined by WAXS; this indicated the occurrence of an intercalation. The addition of 5 phr MMTC18 (MMT after the modification) to the epoxy matrix resulted in a finer dispersion, as evidenced by the disappearance of the diffraction peak in the WAXS pattern and TEM images. The mechanical and viscoelastic properties were improved for both MMT and MMTC18 nanocomposites, but they were more pronounced for the modified ones. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract

The objective of the present work was to study the evolution of the morphology and rheological properties of PE/PS blends with different compositions. Blends ranging from pure A to pure B component were prepared using a single-screw extruder to simulate a convenient industrial process. The analyses of the blend morphologies highlighted the poor adhesion between the two phases and revealed a direct dependence on their composition. The observed variations in the rheological properties and morphology seem to be in agreement with the composition of the blends.

Abstract

The texture development of PEN films with different semicrystalline morphologies have been studied by X-ray diffraction. These different structures have been obtained by uniaxially stretching PEN amorphous films at 100 and 160°C (below and above Tg) at different drawing ratios. Samples have also been characterized by DSC to determine the crystallinity ratios, the crystallization, and melting temperatures. To define the orientation of crystallites in the oriented samples, pole figures have been constructed, as a function of temperature and drawing ratio (DR) in the range 1.5–4. In the range from DR = 2 to 4 the orientation is clearly uniplanar-axial. At Tdraw = 100°C the crystallinity shown by DSC analysis is higher than the sample stretched at 160°C. The orientation is also higher when samples are stretched at 100°C. The naphthalene rings mainly stay in the plane of the film with a lower fraction perpendicular to the plane of the film. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 103: 395–401, 2007
