Neutering of cats has been associated with significant weight gain in the weeks following surgery. The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a moderate fat, low-energy dry expanded diet in reducing weight gain in growing pet cats when fed as part of a weight-control regimen over the 6 months post-neutering. Cats in participating primary care veterinary hospitals were enrolled at neutering and assigned to receive one of the two dietary treatments based on the hospital of origin. Owners of cats in the treatment group were instructed to feed the trial diet at maintenance (324·7 kJ/kg BW0·711 per d). Instructions for the control group were to feed the cat's regular diet according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Body weight and condition were evaluated by veterinarians at enrolment, 2-weeks, and 1–4 and 6 months after surgery. Body condition score (five-point scale) was compared between enrolment and each subsequent visit, controlling for enrolment age and sex. Percentage change in body weight was evaluated via multivariate mixed modelling to account for repeated measures. A total of 187 cats (eighty-seven females and 100 males) with a mean age of 5·2 (sd 0·8) months and mean weight of 2·8 (sd 0·6) kg from fifty-one hospitals completed the trial. The odds of being scored as overweight were 4·1 times as great for cats in the control v. treatment groups (95 % CI 2·1, 8·2). Percentage change in body weight differed significantly with enrolment age (P = 0·007) and approached significance between diet groups (P = 0·08). Cats fed the trial diet had a significantly reduced incidence of overweight in the 6 months following neutering.

Dans un premier temps, nous avons evalue le protocole propose par le fabricant, puis dans un deuxieme temps nous avons ete amene a l'optimiser. L'etude presentee ici a engage trois laboratoires afin de determiner le rendement de recuperation des oocystes de Cryptosporidium parvum et la reproductibilite des experiences, en appliquant un protocole modifie a l'analyse d'echantillons de 100 litres d'eau de distribution artificiellement contamines par des oocystes de Cryptosporidium parvum (1.10 6 oocystes/100 litres).

The observed primordial ${}^{7}$Li abundance in metal-poor halo stars is found to be lower than its Big-Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) calculated value by a factor of approximately three. Some recent works suggested the possibility that this discrepancy originates from missing resonant reactions which would destroy ${}^{7}$Be, parent of ${}^{7}$Li. The most promising candidate resonances which were found include a possibly missed 1${}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ or 2${}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ narrow state around 15 MeV in the compound nucleus ${}^{10}$C formed by ${}^{7}$Be+${}^{3}$He and a state close to 7.8 MeV in the compound nucleus ${}^{11}$C formed by ${}^{7}$Be+${}^{4}$He. In this work, we studied the high excitation energy region of ${}^{10}$C and the low excitation energy region in ${}^{11}$C via the reactions ${}^{10}$B(${}^{3}$He,$t$)${}^{10}$C and ${}^{11}$B(${}^{3}$He,$t$)${}^{11}$C, respectively, at the incident energy of 35 MeV. Our results for ${}^{10}$C do not support ${}^{7}$Be+${}^{3}$He as a possible solution for the ${}^{7}$Li problem. Concerning ${}^{11}$C results, the data show no new resonances in the excitation energy region of interest and this excludes the ${}^{7}$Be+${}^{4}$He reaction channel as an explanation for the ${}^{7}$Li deficit.

Head and neck cancers are the fifth among the most common cancers in France. Two thirds of cases occur at an advanced stage. For advanced disease, progression-free survival, despite undeniable progress, remains below 50% at three years. The last 20 years have been marked by the necessity to identify situations where less intense surgery and/or radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy is possible without jeopardizing the prognosis, and situations where a therapeutic intensification is necessary and results in a gain in survival while better preserving function with less toxicity. French cooperative groups gathering radiation oncologists (GORTEC), surgeons (GETTEC) and medical oncologists or physicians involved in the management of systemic treatments in head and neck cancers (GERCOR) are now belonging to the INCa-labelled Intergroup ORL to deal with the challenges of head and neck cancers.

International audience; The nuclear structure of 69Cu has been investigated by means of the (d,3He) transfer reaction at the Orsay tandem in direct kinematics using a deuteron beam at Ed = 27 MeV and a target of 70Zn isotopically enriched to 95.4%. The 3He of interest from the transfer reaction were detected with the split-pole spectrometer at different angles in the laboratory frame in order to perform angular distributions and assign the angular momentum for each populated state in 69Cu. In this paper, the transferred angular momenta of the populated states will be presented.

We consider steady state and time-dependent flows of chemically reactive polymeric systems in two-dimensional geometries. A numerical simulation tool is proposed for predicting the evolution of the macroscopic velocity, temperature, stress and species concentration fields in such flows. We formulate a general mathematical model on the basis of the first principles of continuum mechanics, which includes a description of the non-linear coupling between kinematics, heat transfer and chemical kinetics. The resulting set of non-linear partial differential equations is solved numerically by means of appropriate finite element techniques. We have implemented the resulting numerical model in the general-purpose POLYFLOW(R) software developed in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. Simulation results for various steady state and time-dependent reactive flows are reported.

Ces analyses ont pour but de controler la qualite des eaux destinees a l'alimentation humaine. Les produits phytosanitaires doivent etre recherches au niveau de la norme europeenne fixee a 0,1 µg/l par matiere active. Les travaux realises ont permis d'une part, d'abaisser le seuil de detection a 0,1 µg/l pour 4 matieres actives utilisees couramment dans le Departement du Calvados ; d'autre part, de valider un protocole d'essai associant : dopage de l'eau a 0,1 µg/l, etude de la variation des rendements d'extraction liquide/liquide ou liquide/solide sur cartouche en carbone graphite, repetabilite et reproductibilite des injections en chromatographies gazeuse et liquide. Les resultats ont ete exprimes en rendement moyen (R) d'extraction, la precision sur R a ete evaluee par son intervalle de confiance (IC) a 95 %. L'utilisation de l'erreur relative (Er) [CV * t (n-1 ddl, 1-α/2 = 0,95) / √n ou n represente le nombre d'essais] comme moyen d'evaluation de la variation inter-essais des resultats permet de tenir compte du nombre d'essais realises, ce qui est particulierement important dans le cas de petits echantillons. Les rendements d'extraction liquide/solide d'eaux dopees a 0,1 µg/l en diuron, isoproturon et linuron et liquide/liquide d'eaux dopees a 0,12 µg/l en trifluraline etaient respectivement : 92 % (IC 95 % : 86 % - 99 %), 84 % (IC 95 % : 60 % - 108 %), 97 % (IC 95 % : 61 % - 133 %) et 103 % (IC 95 % : 97 % - 108 %).

Fetal membranes, in addition to serving as passive barriers, possess secretory capacities and have a role in amniotic fluid production. In the present study, we demonstrate that rat amniotic/chorionic membranes have the capacity to synthesize oxytocin (OT). Analysis of RNA extracted from rat amnion/chorion membranes by RNA blotting and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) revealed the presence of a single species of OT mRNA. The transcript was smaller than the hypothalamic OT transcript and equaled the size of uterine and placental OT mRNA. The abundance of amniotic OT mRNA decreased by 37% from Day 14 to Day 21 of pregnancy. Over the same time, amniotic/chorionic OT immunoreactivity, as assessed by RIA, increased from 0.17 + 0.03 to 1.36 ± 0.18 ng/g tissue weight. HPLC analysis of amniotic/chorionic membrane extracts revealed two peaks of immunoreactive OT (ir-OT). The first peak (36% of total ir-OT) co-eluted with synthetic OT, while the second peak (64%) corresponded to a noncovalent complex, most likely between OT and neurophysin-I. Using the selective OT receptor ligand, 2 5 1-d(CH2) 5 [Tyr(Me)2,Thr 4 ,Tyr-NH29]OVT, we detected high numbers of OT binding sites in rat uterine tissues, but no OT binding sites in amniotic/chorionic or placental membranes. We conclude that the rat amniotic/chorionic membranes represent an extra-hypothalamic site of OT gene expression in the rat during pregnancy and thus represent a possible source of OT present in amniotic fluid.

In this Rapid Communication, we report on $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-particle emission through the nuclear breakup in the reaction $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ on a $^{40}\mathrm{Ca}$ target at 50 A MeV. It is observed that, similar to nucleons, $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ particles can be emitted to the continuum with very specific angular distribution during the reaction. The $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-particle properties seem to be compatible with an $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ cluster in the daughter nucleus that is perturbed and is emitted by the short-range nuclear attraction of the collision partner. A time-dependent theory that describes the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-particle wave-function evolution is able to qualitatively reproduce the observed angular distribution. This mechanism offers new possibilities for studying $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-particle properties in the nuclear medium.

The placenta is an endocrinologically active organ and expresses an important number of polypeptide hormone genes. Although oxytocin (OT)-like immunoreactivity has been detected in placental extracts by RIA, the precise nature and origin of placental OT has remained unclear. In the present study, we examined OT gene expression in rat placental tissue at various stages of gestation using northern blot analysis, polymerase chain reaction, in situ hybridization, HPLC, and immunocytochemistry. Northern blot analysis of RNA extracted from rat placenta revealed a single type of OT gene transcript (0.66 kilobases) which differed in size from hypothalamic OT transcripts (0.75 kilobases). Deadenylation of placental and hypothalamic messenger RNA (mRNA) showed that this size difference was due to differences in poly(A) tail lengths. Polymerase chain reaction amplification of placental and hypothalamic complementary DNAs using four different exon-specific primers provided no evidence for the existence of any additional structural differences between hypothalamic and placental OT-gene transcripts. Quantitative evaluation of northern blots showed that OT mRNA abundance per microgram of total RNA was stage specific and declined by a factor of 6 from day 14 to day 21 of gestation. In contrast to the marked variation of mRNA abundance, the OT peptide content, as measured by RIA, underwent no significant change during the time period studied and varied between 0.37-0.51 ng/g wet tissue wt. Characterization of placental OT immunoreactivity by HPLC and gel filtration identified two peaks of immunoreactivity: one peak (70% of immunoreactivity) corresponded to synthetic OT; whereas the other peak (Mr 11,000, 30% of immunoreactivity) represented a noncovalent association between OT and another molecule, consistent with the formation of a neurophysin/OT complex. By in situ hybridization and immunocytochemistry, we localized OT mRNA and OT immunoreactivity to cells of the trophoblastic epithelium covering the septa of the labyrinth as well as to cytotrophoblastic elements and giant cells of the maternally derived basal zone of the placenta. Placental OT may act locally, may interact with uterine OT receptors, or may play a role in fetal development.

The purpose of the present article was to evaluate indications, regimens, treatment modalities, and predictive factors of response to treatment in locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN).An expert panel including otolaryngology and head and neck surgery specialists, oncologists, radiotherapists and biologists analyzed the literature providing a synthesis and giving some recommendations.Findings from the main randomized phase III trials highlight that the TPF regimen (docetaxel, cisplatin, fluorouracil) represent a preferential option when induction chemotherapy is indicated in either operable or non-operable patients. Given the potential fragility of patients presenting with SCCHN, treatment modalities in routine use require applying preventive measures and tailored follow-up according to each patient's profile. As regards predictive factors of response to TPF regimen, no factor is currently validated, but ongoing trials should provide better knowledge.Progresses in induction chemotherapy have allowed improving the prognosis of patients with locally advanced SCCHN. The TPF regimen represents a major improvement in this indication, and ongoing strategic clinical trials should refine its indications.

Notable advances have been achieved in head and neck cancer and in lung cancer as regards oncogenesis knowledge and treatment optimization. Multimodal management including molecular targeted therapies have provided a clear benefit in some circumstances. This review provides information on these two primary sites. Some issues are specific (non-tobacco-related carcinogenesis, antiangogenic agents) while some others are shared by both primary sites (oncogenesis, EGFR pathway targeting). Molecular targeted therapies have shifted some treatment algorithms in head and neck cancer (monoclonal antibodies targeting EGFR and radiotherapy in advanced diseases) and in lung cancer as well (1st line anti VEGFR antibodies, EGFR pathway tyrosin-kinase inhibitors as 2nd line treatment for metastatic diseases). Many new prospects are under evaluation (anti-EGFR antibodies, mTOR inhibitors, multi-targets agents, anti-IGFR1 antibodies). Molecular targeted therapies have also generated new protocols for disease evaluation, imaging and bio-clinical monitoring in order to better select patients and improve the outcome.

Background: Both induction chemotherapy followed by irradiation and concurrent chemotherapy and radiotherapy have been reported as valuable alternatives to total laryngectomy in patients with advanced larynx or hypopharynx cancer. We report results of the randomized phase 3 trial 24954 from the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer. Methods: Patients with resectable advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx (tumor stage T3T4) or hypopharynx (T2T4), with regional lymph nodes in the neck staged as N0N2 and with no metastasis, were randomly assigned to treatment in the sequential (or control) or the alternating (or experimental) arm. In the sequential arm, patients with a 50% or more reduction in primary tumor size after two cycles of cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil received another two cycles, followed by radiotherapy (70 Gy total). In the alternating arm, a total of four cycles of cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil (in weeks 1, 4, 7, and 10) were alternated with radiotherapy with 20 Gy during the three 2-week intervals between chemotherapy cycles (60 Gy total). All nonresponders underwent salvage surgery and postoperative radiotherapy. The KaplanMeier method was used to obtain time-to-event data. Results: The 450 patients were randomly assigned to treatment (224 to the sequential arm and 226 to the alternating arm). Median follow-up was 6.5 years. Survival with a functional larynx was similar in sequential and alternating arms (hazard ratio of death and/or event = 0.85, 95% confidence interval = 0.68 to 1.06), as were median overall survival (4.4 and 5.1 years, respectively) and median progression-free interval (3.0 and 3.1 years, respectively). Grade 3 or 4 mucositis occurred in 64 (32%) of the 200 patients in the sequential arm who received radiotherapy and in 47 (21%) of the 220 patients in the alternating arm. Late severe edema and/or fibrosis was observed in 32 (16%) patients in the sequential arm and in 25 (11%) in the alternating arm. Conclusions: Larynx preservation, progression-free interval, and overall survival were similar in both arms, as were acute and late toxic effects.

Dogs that participate in animal-assisted interventions (AAIs), often called 'therapy dogs', commonly interact with humans whose immune systems are not functioning optimally. The advisability of feeding raw meat (including poultry) to these animals remains a highly contentious issue, in spite of increasing evidence that raw meat is frequently contaminated with Salmonella. We set out to determine if consuming raw meat influences the risk of therapy dogs shedding Salmonella and other pathogens. Two hundred healthy therapy dogs from Ontario and Alberta were enrolled. Between May 2005 and November 2006, fecal specimens were collected from each dog every 2 months for 1 year, along with a log of places visited, antimicrobial use within the home, dog health status and diet. Specimens were cultured for Salmonella, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), extended-spectrum cephalosporinase (ESC) Escherichia coli and Clostridium difficile. Forty (20%) of the dogs were reported to have been fed raw meat at some point during the year. The incidence rate of Salmonella shedding in the raw meat-fed dogs was 0.61 cases/dog-year, compared with 0.08 cases/dog-year in dogs that were not fed raw meat (P0.001). Controlling for therapy dog group, the repeated measures, and pig ear consumption and diarrhoea in the 2 months prior to specimen submission, dogs that consumed raw meat were significantly more likely to test positive for Salmonella at least once during the year than dogs that did not eat raw meat [odds ratio (OR) 22.7; 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.1-58.8; P0.001]. Specific Salmonella serovars were more common among dogs that consumed raw meat versus those that did not include S. Typhimurium, S. Heidelberg and S. Kentucky. Raw meat consumption was also significantly associated with shedding ESC E. coli (OR 17.2; 95% CI 9.4-32.3). No associations between C. difficile, MRSA or VRE and consumption of raw meat were detected. We recommend that dogs fed raw meat should be excluded from AAI programmes, particularly when the programmes involve interaction with humans at high risk of infection or adverse sequelae attributable to infection. Furthermore, although AAI dogs may not be representative of the general population of dogs, we also recommend that feeding of raw meat to dogs is to be avoided in homes where immunocompromised people live.

In this study, we report on the effect of Bioglass structural transformations on its sintering behaviour. While heating up to 1000 degrees C, five successive transformations occur: glass transition, glass-in-glass phase separation, two crystallization processes and a second glass transition. The sintering of the material exhibits two main shrinkage stages associated with the two glass transitions at 550 and 850 degrees C. At 580 degrees C, the glass-in-glass phase separation induces a decrease in the sintering rate immediately followed by the major crystalline phase crystallization (Na(2)CaSi(2)O(6)) between 600 and 700 degrees C, from the surface to the bulk of the particles. A complete inhibition of sintering takes place followed by a minor shrinkage effect due to crystallization. A plateau is then observed until the second glass transition temperature is reached. A modification of Frenkel's model allows the determination of the glass-in-glass phase separation kinetics and the identification of the structural transformations effects on sintering behaviour.

A case-control study was conducted to investigate occupational risk factors for upper respiratory and digestive tract cancers (nose, lips, buccal cavity, pharynx, and larynx) in the north of France. Two hundred and eighty three cases of histologically confirmed cancer in men treated during the first semester of 1983 at the Regional Cancer Institute were included in the study. Two controls per case were chosen from patients in the medical wards of the local general hospitals in the same geographical area as the case, who did not have cancer. Controls were individually matched for sex, age (+/- 18 months), ethnic group, area of residence, and smoking and alcohol drinking history. All subjects were questioned about occupations in which they had worked for at least 15 years. Odds ratios for major occupational categories were estimated using conditional logistic regression for matched samples. Significant associations were found between wood work and nasal cancer (four cases, no control) and farming and lip cancer (odds ratio 5.3, 95% confidence interval 1.1-26.8). Pharyngeal cancer was associated with the textile industry (OR 2.4, 95% CI 1.0-5.7) and the building industry (OR 2.0, 95% CI 1.1-3.9). Coal miners showed a threefold excess risk for cancer of the lip (4 cases, no control), buccal cavity (OR 3.5, 95% CI 1.1-11.8), and larynx (OR 3.2, 95% CI 1.1-9.7).

The facial artery musculomucosal (FAMM) flap described by Pribaz in 1992 is a musculomucosa flap of the cheek plugged into the higher or lower facial pedicle artery. Indications in terms of substance losses in the oral cavity are numerous.Twenty cases carried out from 2003 to 2006 at the Oscar-Lambret Neck Surgery Cancer Center are reported with a study first on record, then a study on 15 patients (three deaths, two flaps take away for local recurrence). The dimensions of the flap, its epicritic sensitivity, its sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures, the Semmes-Weinstein test and a key test of pique were analyzed. A neck dissection was most often done in the cases studied, and did not advise against the flap.The main indication was represented by tumors of the floor of the mouth. Individual susceptibility testing were broadly similar to the flap and on the opposite side healthy. The results seem to show that, as with skin flaps, there is a complete recovery of sensation.This flap is very reliable and most often resensitizes. The low ligation of the artery during neck dissection does not jeopardize the survival (rich regional anastomoses). The FAMM flap makes up for the loss of medium size substance, it represents a very good solution between directed healing and more consistent skin flaps.

Tabletops incite people to collaborate around shared documents. We propose DigiTable, a platform for collocated and remote collaboration which attempts to preserve the fluidity of interactions and the mutual awareness of co- presence. DigiTable combines a multiuser tactile table- top, a video-communication system and a robust computer vision module for distant users' gesture visualization. From an experiment, we show that DigiTable improves the efficiency of a collaborative task in remote configuration. We also show that remote gesture visualization facilitates coordination as it provides to local participants important information such as intentionality and pointing. Thus, collocated and remote configurations are both worthwhile experiences: remote collaboration is not seen anymore as a poor ersatz of collocated collaboration, although presence feeling is not uniformly perceived by participants.

Infection and colonization with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are now increasingly being reported in animals and people who work with animals, including horses and horse personnel. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the prevalence of MRSA colonization in veterinary personnel attending an international equine veterinary conference, and to identify risk factors for MRSA colonization in this group. Volunteers were recruited at the conference to provide a single nasal swab and complete a questionnaire regarding contact with the human health care system, contact with horses, and personal hand hygiene. Colonization with MRSA was found in 26/257 (10.1%) of study participants. Multivariable analysis showed an increased risk of MRSA colonization associated with having been diagnosed with or having treated a patient diagnosed with MRSA colonization or infection in the last year (odds ratio [OR] 8.41, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.51–49.92, P = 0.015; OR 3.27, 95% CI 1.05–10.11, P = 0.039, respectively), whereas hand washing between infectious cases (OR 0.27, 95% CI 0.11–0.72, P = 0.009) and hand washing between farms (OR 0.35, 95% CI 0.14–0.98, P = 0.047) were protective. The prevalence of MRSA colonization among equine veterinary personnel found in this study was high compared to that of other studies of the general population. These data support previous suggestions that equine veterinary personnel are at increased risk of colonization with MRSA. This is the first study to demonstrate a statistically significant association between hand hygiene practices and a measurable clinical outcome in veterinary medicine.

Many hospitals and long-term care facilities in North America currently permit animals to visit with their patients; however, the development of relevant infection control and prevention policies has lagged, due in large part to the lack of scientific evidence regarding risks of patient infection associated with animal interaction. This report provides standard guidelines for animal-assisted interventions in health care facilities, taking into account the available evidence.

Vertebrates display diverse patterns of neuromuscular innervation, but little is known about how such diversity is generated. In mammals, neuromuscular junctions form predominantly at equatorial locations, giving rise to a focal innervation pattern along a central endplate band. In addition, vertebrate striated muscles exhibit two nonfocal neuromuscular patterns, myoseptal and distributed innervation. Although agrin-MuSK-rapsyn signaling is essential for the focal innervation pattern, it is unknown whether the same genetic program also controls synaptogenesis at nonfocal innervation sites. Here we show that one of three transcripts generated by the zebrafish unplugged locus, unplugged FL, encodes the zebrafish MuSK ortholog. We demonstrate that UnpFL/MuSK is critical for the assembly of focal synapses in zebrafish and that it cooperates with dystroglycan in the formation of nonfocal myoseptal and distributed synapses. Our results provide the first genetic evidence that neuromuscular synapse formation can occur in the absence of MuSK and that the combinatorial function of UnpFL/MuSK and dystroglycan generates diverse patterns of vertebrate neuromuscular innervation.

Shared interface allowing several users in co-presence to interact simultaneously on digital data on a single display is an uprising challenge in Human Computer Interaction (HCI). Its development is motivated by the advent of large displays such as wall-screens and tabletops. It affords fluid and natural digital interaction without hindering human communication and collaboration. It enables mutual awareness, making participant conscious of each other activities. In this paper, we are interested in Mixed Presence Groupware (MPG), when two or more remote shared interfaces are connected for a distant collaborative session. Our contribution strives to answer to the question: Can the actual technology provide sufficient presence feeling of the remote site to enable efficient collaboration between two distant groups? We propose DigiTable, an experimental platform we hope lessen the gap between collocated and distant interaction. DIGITABLE is combining a multiuser tactile interactive tabletop, a video-communication system enabling eye-contact with real size distant user visualization and a spatialized sound system for speech transmission. A robust computer vision module for distant users' gesture visualization completes the platform. We discuss first experiments using DIGITABLE for a collaborative task (mosaic completion) in term of distant mutual awareness. Although DIGITABLE does not provide the same presence feeling in distant and or collocated situation, a first and important finding emerges: distance does not hinder efficient collaboration anymore.

Gastrointestinal diseases pose significant risks to captive cheetah survival and welfare. Multiple factors are thought to be associated with these diseases, but to date a comprehensive epidemiological survey of disease risk factors has not been conducted. A survey of diet and health parameters was completed for 184 captive cheetahs in 86 international facilities. Comparisons were made among dietary factors with respect to disease status and observed faecal consistency, incidence of vomiting and diarrhoea in the past 4 weeks. Extremely dry faeces were most common in cheetahs fed carcasses, but was still of low incidence (15%). Contrastingly, cheetahs fed commercially prepared diets had the highest prevalence of liquid faeces “always” or “often” (9%). Cheetahs fed raw meat diets had the highest prevalence of soft faeces with no shape (22%), as well as of firm and dry faeces (40%). No broad category of diet exerted any influence on the health parameters investigated. However, feeding of ribs at least once per week reduced the odds of diarrhoea (P = 0.020) and feeding of long bones (limbs) at least once per week was associated with a lower odds of vomiting (P = 0.008). Cheetahs fed muscle meat at least once per week had reduced odds of suffering from chronic gastritis (P = 0.005) or non-specific gastrointestinal disease (P < 0.001). The only factor identified as increasing the odds of chronic gastritis was feeding of horse “often” or “always” (P = 0.023). The findings of the current study build on existing empirical research to support a recommendation towards a greater inclusion of skeletal components. Current husbandry guidelines advocating the use of supplemented raw meat diets are likewise supported, but the use of horse meat, as well as commercially prepared diets for captive cheetahs, warrants caution until further research is conducted.

About one third of osteosarcoma patients develop lung metastasis refractory to chemotherapy. Recent studies indicate that biological response modifiers activating the patient's immune system may help controlling minimal residual disease via pathways distinct from those used by cytotoxic drugs, and therefore prove effective against tumor resistance. Muramyl tripeptide phosphatidylethanolamine (MTP-PE) is a synthetic lipophilic glycopeptide capable of activating monocytes and macrophages to a tumoricidal state. When intercalated in multilamellar liposomes (L-MTP-PE) and injected intravenously, it targets lung, liver, and spleen macrophages. Therapeutic activity of L-MTP-PE was demonstrated in several preclinical models of experimental lung metastasis and in clinical trials in dogs with osteosarcoma. Although macrophage activation was shown to be directly involved in the in vivo anti-metastatic activity of this molecule, cytokine and chemokine secretion by activated macrophages could induce recruitment and stimulation of other immune cells, which may in turn indirectly contribute to the anti-tumor effect. L-MTP-PE has undergone clinical development in humans. In early trials, most side effects of L-MTP-PE were minimal. L-MTP-PE showed signs of efficacy in treatment of patients with recurrent osteosarcoma and the encouraging results from phase II studies led to a phase III trial conducted by the Children's Oncology Group in patients with newly diagnosed high-grade osteosarcoma. Patients were treated with or without L-MTP-PE in combination with multi-drug chemotherapy in adjuvant setting; significantly higher overall survival and disease-free survival were observed in the group receiving L-MTP-PE.

Motor axons in the trunk of the developing zebrafish exit from the ventral spinal cord in one ventral root per hemisegment and grow on a common path toward the region of the horizontal myoseptum, where they select their specific pathways. Tenascin-C, a component of the extracellular matrix, is concentrated in this choice region. Adaxial cells and other myotomal cells express tenascin-C mRNA, suggesting that these cells are the source of tenascin-C protein. Overexpressing an axon repellent fragment containing the cysteine-rich region and the epidermal growth factor-like repeats of tenascin-C led to retarded growth of ventral motor nerves between their spinal exit point and the horizontal myoseptum. Injection of a protein fragment containing the same part of tenascin-C also induced slower growth of motor nerves. Conversely, knock down of tenascin-C protein resulted in abnormal lateral branching of ventral motor nerves. In the zebrafish unplugged mutant, in which axons display pathfinding defects in the region of the horizontal myoseptum, tenascin-C immunoreactivity was not detectable in this region, indicating an abnormal extracellular matrix in unplugged. We conclude that tenascin-C is part of a specialized extracellular matrix in the region of the horizontal myoseptum that influences the growth of motor axons.

Visitation of hospitalized people by dogs is becoming commonplace, but little is known about the potential health risks of introducing dogs to healthcare settings. This cross-sectional study evaluated the prevalence of zoonotic agents in a group of 102 visitation dogs from a variety of sources across Ontario. Between May and July 2004, owners were interviewed by a standardized questionnaire while dogs underwent a standardized physical examination. One specimen of faeces, hair-coat brushings and one rectal, aural, nasal, oral and pharyngeal swab were collected from each dog and tested for 18 specific pathogens. All dogs were judged to be in good health. Zoonotic agents were isolated from 80 out of 102 (80%) dogs. The primary pathogen was Clostridium difficile, which was isolated from 58 (58%) faecal specimens. Seventy-one percent (41/58) of these isolates were toxigenic. Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase Escherichia coli was isolated from one (1%) dog, extended-spectrum cephalosporinase E. coli was isolated from three (3%) dogs, and organisms of the genus Salmonella were isolated from three (3%) dogs. Pasteurella multocida or Pasteurella canis was isolated from 29 (29%) oral swabs, and Malassezia pachydermatis was isolated from eight (8%) aural swabs. Giardia antigen was present in the faeces of seven (7%) dogs, while Toxocara canis and Ancylostoma caninum were detected in two (2%) dogs and one (1%) dog, respectively. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, vancomycin-resistant enterococci, Campylobacter spp., Microsporum canis, group A streptococci, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Cryptosporidium spp. were not detected. Further information is needed before the full implications of these findings for infection control can be assessed properly.

Larynx preservation in advanced pharyngolaryngeal cancers has been a major challenge in clinical research over the past two decades. Subtotal surgery (endoscopic laser surgery, supracricoid partial laryngectomies and hemilaryngopharyngectomies) has allowed reducing the indications of the so-called "mutilating" surgery. On the other hand, the modification of fractionation has notably improved the results of definitive irradiation (but most probably for supraglottic tumors). The main clinical research has been carried out with either sequential or concurrent chemo-irradiation. Induction chemotherapy followed by irradiation in good responders or by surgery in poor responders allowed to preserve the larynx in around half the cases without deleterious impact on overall survival. Concurrent chemo-irradiation trials suggested that the larynx preservation rates could be increased but overall survival remained unchanged and mucositis was a notable side effect. The next step could be the combination of induction chemotherapy followed by concurrent chemo-irradiation in good responders. Finally, the place of new drugs (taxanes, targeted therapies) is to be explored in this context.

In vivo and in vitro studies indicate that cuticular chemicals from the ventral region of the abdomen where the sternal gland of the dampwood termite Zootermopsis angusticollis is located have fungistatic properties. Germination rates of conidia of the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae were significantly reduced from 91% (controls) to 38.5% after nymphs walked over conidia-seeded agar medium, but did not differ from controls when the sternal gland and surrounding cuticle were sealed with nail polish. In vitro studies show that germination of fungal conidia was also significantly reduced following incubation with cuticular extracts of either sternal or tergal segments suggesting that cuticular exudates in general may have antifungal properties. Extracts of sternites had greater fungistatic activity than extracts of tergites, but the difference was not statistically significant. Extracts of the sternal gland significantly reduced germination rates by up to 9%. Germination rates were significantly reduced when conidia were incubated with n-hexanoic acid, or its vapor. n-Hexanoic acid has been recovered from whole body extracts of Zootermopsis nevadensis and may indeed be a component of the sternal gland of Z. angusticollis. Here we suggest that sternal gland secretions in termites may have had the original function of controlling microbes within the nest and their prominent role in communication may have evolved secondarily.

En route to their target, pioneering motor growth cones repeatedly encounter choice points at which they make pathway decisions. In the zebrafish mutant unplugged, two of the three segmental motor axons make incorrect decisions at a somitic choice point. Using positional cloning, we show here that unplugged encodes a homolog of muscle-specific kinase (MuSK) and that, unlike mammalian MuSK, unplugged has only a limited role in neuromuscular synaptogenesis. We demonstrate that unplugged is transiently expressed in cells adjacent to the choice point and that unplugged signaling before the arrival of growth cones induces changes in the extracellular environment. In addition, we find that the unplugged locus generates three different transcripts. The splice variant 1 (SV1) isoform lacks the extracellular modules essential for agrin responsiveness, and signaling through this isoform mediates axonal pathfinding, independent of the MuSK downstream component rapsyn. Our results demonstrate a new role for MuSK homologs in axonal pathway selection.

Before establishing terminal synapses with their final muscle targets,migrating motor axons form en passant synaptic contacts with myotomal muscle. Whereas signaling through terminal synapses has been shown to play important roles in pre- and postsynaptic development, little is known about the function of these early en passant synaptic contacts. Here, we show that increased neuromuscular activity through en passant synaptic contacts affects pre- and postsynaptic development. We demonstrate that in zebrafish twistermutants, prolonged neuromuscular transmission causes motor axonal extension and muscular degeneration in a dose-dependent manner. Cloning of twister reveals a novel, dominant gain-of-function mutation in the muscle-specific nicotinic acetylcholine receptor α-subunit, CHRNA1. Moreover, electrophysiological analysis demonstrates that the mutant subunit increases synaptic decay times, thereby prolonging postsynaptic activity. We show that as the first en passant synaptic contacts form, excessive postsynaptic activity in homozygous embryos severely impedes pre- and postsynaptic development, leading to degenerative defects characteristic of the human slow-channel congenital myasthenic syndrome. By contrast, in heterozygous embryos, transient and mild increase in postsynaptic activity does not overtly affect postsynaptic morphology but causes transient axonal defects, suggesting bi-directional communication between motor axons and myotomal muscle. Together, our results provide compelling evidence that during pathfinding, myotomal muscle cells communicate extensively with extending motor axons through en passant synaptic contacts.

In the first part of the present article (Coton et al. [1]), experimental data on a very high lift blade subject to bars generated incoming wakes are presented in terms of losses at mid span, secondary losses and unsteady heat transfer coefficient. In the present part, time-accurate 3D Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) computations have been performed including the simulation of the transition process for attached and detached boundary layers. First, the capability of the method to take into account the Reynolds number effect is presented in the case of steady inlet condition, and comparisons are shown for all the available experimental data. Particular attention has been taken to the influence of the numerical spatial scheme. 3D unsteady computations have been performed for two different rotational speeds. The wake effects are presented in terms of turbulence intensity and static pressure fluctuation, which are both important to describe the unsteady transitional phenomenae.

An experimental and numerical study was performed about the influence of incoming wakes and the calming effect on a very high lift low pressure turbine rotor blade. The first part of the paper describes the experimental determination of the pressure loss coefficient and the heat transfer around the blade mounted in a high speed linear cascade. The cascade is exposed to incoming wakes generated by high speed rotating bars. Their aim is to act upon the transition/separation phenomena. The measurements were conducted at a constant exit Mach number equal to 0.8 and at three Reynolds number values, namely 190000, 350000 and 650000. The inlet turbulence level was fixed at 0.8%. An additional feature of this work is to identify the boundary layer status through heat transfer measurements. Compared to the traditionally used hot films, thin film heat flux gages provide fully quantitative data required for code validation. Numerical computations are presented in the second part of the paper.

Limatulichthys nasarcus n. sp. is described as a new species based on 15 specimens from the Ventuari and Caura Rivers in Southern Venezuela. The new species can be distinguished from its only congener, L . griseus , by the presence of anterior abdominal plates half the size of those at center of abdomen (vs. plates similar in size); distinct spots less than half of diameter of naris across entire dorsum, including snout and head (vs. indistinct dorsal spots larger or equal than diameter of naris); lateral portions of head and opercle with dark well-defined spots larger than those on dorsum (vs. spots on lateral portions of head and opercle equal in size to those on remainder of body); snout profile in dorsal view broadly rounded (vs. acutely triangular); head longer (21.4–24.2 SL vs. 17.7–21.0%); and anal fin longer (15.7–18.0 SL vs. 13.7–15.6%). Distinctiveness of the two species is further supported by their non-overlapping distribution in multivariate morphospace. The disjunct distribution of L. nasarcus across both the Caura and Ventuari rivers exclusive of the main Orinoco River channel contributes to a growing body of evidence supporting the historical connection between headwaters of these drainages. The hypothesized existence of a ‘proto-Berbice’ paleodrainage provides one explanation for such a connection.

The development of the Discontinuous Isoperibolic Thermal Analysis (ΔITA) aims at setting up a new phase diagram investigation technique efficient in the case of organic component systems. A heterogeneous system (with at least one liquid phase) is kept in isoperibolic conditions and submitted to discontinuous composition shifts by successive additions of a thermostated solvent (or solution). It results in perturbations of the equilibrium state and then physical phenomena which bring the system back to the equilibrium. The phenomena resulting from the addition of liquid (dissolution, dilution...) imply enthalpy changes which cause temperature variations of the system. An adapted exploitation of the temperature versus time signals leads to the determination of the topology of the corresponding phase diagram.

The aim of this study is to perform a review of the literature on economic studies in the area of head and neck cancer (including the cancers of the buccal cavity, the larynx, and the pharynx). French and international literature (as reported on Medline and OHE-IFPMA databases) has been reviewed. This research demonstrated the lack of economic data in this field. In France, only one study was found, assessing the cost of the treatment of head and neck cancer in hospital to 29 billions French Francs including 2.3 billions linked to head and neck cancer. This relative indifference is possibly due to the heterogeneity and the low incidence of the studied pathologies. In addition, the research highlighted the great interest of dealing with quality of life in such physically and psychologically disabling illnesses. To facilitate the decision making and to allow optimal resource allocation in the area of costly health strategies, we should develop in France an economic evaluation of the head and neck cancer, while taking care of integrating the notion of quality of life into the analysis.

In this paper, an original method of evaluating the physical properties of wheat-flour-water systems using high-frequency low-power ultrasound is presented. Most of the experiments were performed with a reflectance technique measuring the acoustic impedance of doughs. The velocity of propagation, attenuation and viscoelastic moduli have been evaluated for both compressional and shear ultrasonic waves in the interval 2-10 MHz for doughs of different hydrations. The 53% water content was found to be critical with respect to the presence of free water. The influence of the mixing and rest times on the longitudinal ultrasonic parameters is also studied.

The neurohypophyseal hormone oxytocin (OT) is the most potent uterotonic agent known and is used to induce labor. Yet, endogenous circulating OT appears not to participate in the induction of labor. As shown here, the finding of OT messenger RNA and peptide in the uterus suggests a solution for this paradox. During gestation, rat uterus OT messenger RNA increased more than 150-fold and, at term, exceeded hypothalamic OT messenger RNA by 70-fold. Thus, during parturition, OT may act primarily as a local mediator and not as a circulating hormone.

Wound infections (WIs) are the main cause of post-surgical morbidity in head and neck surgery. They arise with an especially immunocompromised predisposition and mainly involve oropharyngeal flora bacteria. However, the assessment of the incidence of these infections differs in the literature (0 to 87%). This in part accounts for the lack of a real consensus as to the definition (do all mucocutaneous fistulae attest to WIs?). For this reason, the analysis of their risk factors and the means of the prevention is difficult. In class 1 surgery, the incidence of WIs ranges 0 to 6%. In this case, antiobioprophylaxis does not seem to be justified. In surgery opening the mucosa, it is difficult to classify the surgical procedures in Altemeier's classes 2 and 3. There are many arguments, in particular physiopathological arguments, to consider that the contamination of surgical bed of surgery does continue after the operation. The incidence of WIs varies widely from one study to the next. Without antibiotic prophylaxis, from 40 to 87% WIs are observed. With preventive antibiotherapy, the incidence ranges between 3.4 to 47%. Various risk factors have been described, in particular: tumour size and node extension, tracheotomy prior to surgery. Four multi-factor studies have shown, in multivariate analysis, totally different risk factors. The prevention of these WIs is currently based on hospital hygiene rules and antibiotic prophylaxis. The optimum conditions have still not been determined. Reliable data to define, the incidence and risk factors of these WIs are missing. New prospective studies are definitely required.
