Abstract: INDRA, a new and innovative highly segmented detector for light charged particles and fragments is described. It covers geometrically 90% of the 4π solid angle and has very low detection thresholds. The detector, operated under vacuum, is axially symmetric and segmented in 336 independent cells allowing efficient detection of high multiplicity events. Nucleus identification down to very low energy threshold (≈ 1 A MeV) is achieved by using ionization chambers operated with low pressure C 3 F 8 gas. Residual energies are measured by a combination of silicon (300 μm thick) and cesium iodide (5 to 14 cm in length) detectors. Very forward angles are covered by fast counting phoswich scintillators (NE102/NE115). Charge resolution up to Z = 50 is achieved on a large energy dynamic range (5000 to 1 for silicon detectors). Isotopic separation is obtained up to Z = 3. The treatment of the signals is performed through specifically designed and highly integrated modules, most of which are in the new VXIbus standard. Full remote control of parameter settings, including visualization of signals, is thus allowed. The detector is continuously monitored with a laser source and electronic pulsers and is found stable over several days. Energy calibration procedures, making use of specific detectors and the ability of the GANIL accelerator to deliver secondary beams, have been developed. First experiments were performed in the spring of 1993.

Abstract: Peripheral collisions involving heavy ions at relativistic energies have been extensively studied for the last years. Such reactions lead to generally hot fragments [1,2], however the excitation energy is subject to large fluctuations and can reach low values [3]. The study of the energy dissipation, its coupling to other quantities such as the isospin and momentum of fragments are of interest because they carry information on the underlying mechanism, governing to a large extent production yields. Up to now this excitation energy has been essentially assessed from the effect of the evaporation stage on the N Z ratio of fragments [1,2]. We report in this contribution on a direct measurement, in coincidence with heavy fragments, of particles which mainly come from the deexcitation stage of the quasi-projectile. This type of measurement provides information not only on the mean deposited energy, but also on the excitation spectrum. The experimental results will be discussed in view of two questions: are neutron-rich isotopes produced either by fluctuations in the energy deposition (low energy tail) or by fluctuations in the decay stage for hot primary fragments? Does a Glodhaber-type mechanism [4] (recoil effects) fully accounts for the width of the longitudinal momentum spectrum?

Abstract: The yield of the neutron capture reaction 232Th(n,γ) has been measured at the neutron time-of-flight facility n-TOF at CERN in the energy range from 1 eV to 1 MeV. The reduction of the acquired data to the capture yield for resolved resonances from 1 eV to 4 keV is described and compared to a recent evaluated data set. The resonance parameters were used to assign an orbital momentum to each resonance. A missing level estimator was used to extract the s-wave level spacing of D0=17.2±0.9 eV. © 2012 American Physical Society.

Abstract: Gamma-decay probabilities of 173Yb and 176Lu have been measured using the surrogate reactions 174Yb(3He,αγ)173Yb* and 174Yb(3He,pγ)176Lu*, respectively. For the first time, the gamma-decay probabilities have been obtained with two independent experimental methods based on the use of C6D6 scintillators and Germanium detectors. Our results for the radiative-capture cross sections are several times higher than the corresponding neutron-induced data. To explain these differences, we have used our gamma-decay probabilities to extract rather direct information on the spin distributions populated in the transfer reactions used. They are about two times wider and the mean values are 3 to 4 ℏ higher than the ones populated in the neutron-induced reactions. As a consequence, in the transfer reactions neutron emission to the ground and first excited states of the residual nucleus is strongly suppressed and gamma-decay is considerably enhanced.

Abstract: The existing evaluations of the ${}^{243}$Am neutron-induced fission cross section have been questioned by recent measurements performed at the GNEISS facility. In the neutron energy range from 1 to 6 MeV, the GNEISS data present deviations of more than 15$%$ with respect to the evaluations. In order to solve this problem, we have measured this cross section in reference to three different standard cross sections. The first standard reaction used corresponds to the neutron on proton elastic scattering cross section, which is known with a precision better than 0.5$%$ over a wide neutron-energy range of 1 meV to 20 MeV. The other two experiments were conducted in reference to the ${}^{235}$U(n, f) and ${}^{238}$U(n, f) reactions. The comparison between these three standard reactions ensures that systematic parameters have been correctly evaluated. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis of parameters and correlations of parameters is described and a complete variance-covariance matrix of the measurements is presented and discussed.

Abstract: The (n,γ) cross section of 96Zr has been investigated at the CERN n-TOF spallation neutron source. High-resolution time-of-flight measurements using an enriched ZrO2 sample allowed us to analyze 15 resonances below 40 keV with improved accuracy. On average, the capture widths were found to be 25% smaller than reported in earlier experiments. If complemented with the contribution by direct radiative capture, the derived Maxwellian averaged cross sections are consistent with activation data at kT=25 keV. The present results confirm the astrophysical implications for the s-process branching at 95Zr. © 2011 American Physical Society.

Abstract: International audience; 237Np is one of the actinides which is most abundantly produced in present reactors, and it could be a good candidate for incineration due to its long life time. However this requires a good knowledge of neutron cross sections. The n_TOF collaboration has carried out a fission cross section measurement at the n_TOF neutron facility at CERN, spanning a very broad energy range, from a fraction of eV to GeV. When compared to previous measurements the n_TOF fission cross section appears to be higher by 5-7% beyond the first fission threshold. We show however that several previous measurements, although consistent with each other, are dependent through re-normalization procedures. To check the relevance of n_TOF data, we simulate an experiment, performed at Los Alamos, with a sphere of 237Np of 6 kg surrounded by enriched uranium 235U, so as to reach criticity with fast neutrons. When introducing the n_TOF data for the fission cross section of 237Np, the simulation predicts a multiplicating factor keff in better agreement with the experiment as the deviation of 750 pcm is reduced to 250 pcm. We explore also the hypothesis of possible deficiencies of the inelastic cross section in 235U which has been invoked by some authors to explain the deviation of 750 pcm. However, the large distortion that should be applied to reconcile the critical experiment with its simulation discredits this option. These outcomes support the hypothesis of a higher fission cross section of 237Np.

Abstract: The n TOF collaboration operates a Total Absorption Calorimeter (TAC) [1] for measuring neu- tron capture cross-sections of low-mass and/or radioactive samples. The results obtained with the TAC have led to a substantial improvement of the capture cross sections of 237Np and 240Pu [2]. The experience acquired during the rst measurements has allowed us to optimize the performance of the TAC and to improve the capture signal to background ratio, thus opening the way to more complex and demanding measurements on rare radioactive materials. The new design has been reached by a series of detailed Monte Carlo simulations of complete experiments and dedicated test measurements. The new capture setup will be presented and the main achievements highlighted.

Abstract: The successful development of advanced nuclear systems for sustainable energy production and nuclear waste management depends on high quality nuclear data libraries. Recent sensitivity stud- ies and reports [1-3] have identi ed the need for substantially improving the accuracy of neutron cross-section data for minor actinides. The n TOF collaboration has initiated an ambitious exper- imental program for the measurement of neutron capture cross sections of minor actinides. Two experimental setups have been constructed for this purpose: a Total Absorption Calorimeter (TAC) [4] for measuring neutron capture cross-sections of low-mass and/or radioactive samples and a set of two low neutron sensitivity C6D6 detectors for the less radioactive materials.

Abstract: The neutron capture cross sections of the Zr isotopes play an important role in nucleosynthesis studies. The s-process reaction flow between the Fe seed and the heavier isotopes passes through the neutron magic nucleus {sup 90}Zr and through {sup 91,92,93,94}Zr, but only part of the flow extends to {sup 96}Zr because of the branching point at {sup 95}Zr. Apart from their effect on the s-process flow, the comparably small isotopic (n,{gamma}) cross sections make Zr also an interesting structural material for nuclear reactors. The {sup 94}Zr (n,{gamma}) cross section has been measured with high resolution at the spallation neutron source n{sub T}OF at CERN and resonance parameters are reported up to 60 keV neutron energy.

The setup takes advantage of the coincidence detection of both fission fragments to discriminate the background reactions produced by high energy neutrons and it allows obtaining neutron-induced fission cross section up to 1 GeV

Abstract: The neutron-induced fission cross-section of 233U has been measured at the CERN n_TOF facility relative to the standard fission cross-section of 235U between 0.5 and 20MeV. The experiment was performed with a fast ionization chamber for the detection of the fission fragments and to discriminate against $ \alpha$ -particles from the natural radioactivity of the samples. The high instantaneous flux and the low background of the n_TOF facility result in data with uncertainties of $ \approx$ 3% , which were found in good agreement with previous experiments. The high quality of the present results allows to improve the evaluation of the 233U (n,f) cross-section and, consequently, the design of energy systems based on the Th/U cycle.

Abstract: The decay from excited levels in medium and heavy nuclei can be described in a statistical approach by means of Photon Strength Functions and Level Density distributions. The study of electromagnetic cascades following neutron capture based on the use of high e ciency detectors has been shown to be well suited for probing the properties of the Photon Strength Function of heavy (high level density) and/or radioactive (high background) nuclei. In this work we have investigated for the rst time the validity of the recommended PSF of actinides, in particular 235U, 238Np and 241Pu. Our study includes the search for resonance structures in the PSF below Sn and draws conclusions regarding their existence and their characteristics in terms of energy, width and electromagnetic nature.

Abstract: The n_TOF spallation neutron facility is operating at CERN since 2001. Neutrons are produced with a very wide energy range, from thermal up to 1 GeV and with a very high instantaneous flux (10(5)n/cm(2)/pulse at 200 m from target) thanks to the high intensity (7 x 10(12) protons/pulse) and low repetition rate of the Proton Synchrotron (PS) which is delivering protons to a lead spallation target. The experimental area is located at 200 m from the target, resulting in a very good energy resolution and beam quality thanks to the adoption of an optimal collimation system. At the end of 2008 the n_TOF facility has resumed operation after a halt of 3 years due to technical issues. This contribution will outline the main physics results obtained by the facility since its inception in 1999, and show the importance of the measured nuclear data in the field of Nuclear Astrophysics and Nuclear Technology. Then it will present the future perspectives of the facility, aiming mainly in the direction of measuring highly radioactive samples, for which the facility has unique capabilities, with a lower background. Abstract: International audience; The "Neutrons for Science" (NFS) facility will be a component of SPIRAL‐2, the future accelerator dedicated to the production of very intense radioactive ion beams, under construction at GANIL in Caen (France). NFS will be composed of a pulsed neutron beam for in‐flight measurements and irradiation stations for cross‐section measurements and material studies. Continuous and quasi‐monokinetic energy spectra will be available at NFS respectively produced by the interaction of deuteron beam on thick a Be converter and by the 7Li(p,n) reaction on a thin converter. The flux at NFS will be up to 2 orders of magnitude higher than those of other existing time‐of‐flight facilities in the 1 MeV to 40 MeV range. NFS will be a very powerful tool for physics and fundamental research as well as applications like the transmutation of nuclear waste, design of future fission and fusion reactors, nuclear medicine or test and development of new detectors.

Abstract: The conference proceedings will be published (on-line) at the EPJ Web of Conferences.; Neutron-induced capture cross sections of short-lived nuclei are of great importance in many areas: fundamental nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics and nuclear applications, such as nuclear reactors. However, very often the high radioactivity of the samples makes the direct measurement of these cross sections extremely difficult. The surrogate reaction method [1] is an indirect way of determining neutron-induced cross sections for reactions that proceed through a compound nucleus. In this method, the decaying nucleus of the desired reaction is produced via a transfer or an inelastic scattering reaction (figure 1). This technique presents the advantage that the target material can be stable or less radioactive than the material required for a neutron-induced measurement. Nevertheless, a significant question in the use of the surrogate reaction method lies in the difference between the spin and parity population in the neutron-induced and surrogate reactions. The CENBG collaboration has successfully applied this technique to determine the neutron-induced fission cross sections of several short-lived nuclei such as 233Pa[2], 242;243Cm and 241Am[3]. The results are in very good agreement with neutron-induced data. We are currently investigating whether this powerful technique can also be used to determine radiative capture cross sections. For this purpose, we have studied the transfer reactions 174Yb(3He,pg)176Lu and 174Yb(3He,4Heg)173Yb as surrogates for the 175Lu(n,g) and 172Yb(n,g) reactions, respectively. The g probabilities obtained in our experiment show clear discrepancies with already existing neutroninduced data. In this contribution we will present the experimental set-up and the data analysis. Then, we will focus on the origin of these discrepencies. Perspectives for the surrogate method applied to capture cross sections will be discussed.

Abstract: In stellar-evolution models, the 13N(p, γ)14O reaction plays an important role in the hot CNO cycle. Its reaction rate depends directly on the magnitude of the radiative width of the 5.17 MeV level in 14O. That width has been measured using the Coulomb break-up technique. A 70 MeV u 14O beam was excited in the Coulomb field of a 208Pb target, the 13N and proton fragments being recorded using a magnetic spectrometer and CsI scintillators, respectively. The experimental value Γγ = 2.4 ± 0.9 eV is in overall agreement with other recent measurements.

Abstract: Intermediate velocity products in Ar+Ni collisions from 52 to 95 A.MeV are studied in an experiment performed at the GANIL facility with the 4$\pi$ multidetector INDRA. It is shown that these emissions cannot be explained by statistical decays of the quasi-projectile and the quasi-target in complete equilibrium. Three methods are used to isolate and characterize intermediate velocity products. The total mass of these products increases with the violence of the collision and reaches a large fraction of the system mass in mid-central collisions. This mass is found independent of the incident energy, but strongly dependent on the geometry of the collision. Finally it is shown that the kinematical characteristics of intermediate velocity products are weakly dependent on the experimental impact parameter, but strongly dependent on the incident energy.
