202. Free Transverse Vibration Analysis of thin rectangular plates having arbitrarily varying non-homogeneity along two concurrent edge

Abstract

In this paper, I presented the analysis and numerical results for free transverse vibration of thin rectangular plates having arbitrarily varying non-homogeneity with the in-plane coordinates along the two concurrent edges. For finding the general governing differential equation first used the Kirchhoff's plate theory by considering their assumptions. After finding the governing equation for the plate. For the non- homogeneity a linear variation for Young's modulus and density of the plate has been assumed. Finite difference method (FDM) has been used to obtain the eigen value problem for such model plate for two different boundary condition at the edge namely (i) CCCC fully clamped (ii) CSCS two opposites are clamped and other two are simply supported. By solving these eigen value problem using MATLAB, the lowest three eigen value have been reported as the first three natural frequencies for the three mode of vibration. 203. Nanoscale virtual potentials using optical tweezers

Abstract

We combine optical tweezers with feedback to impose arbitrary potentials on a colloidal particle. The feedback trap detects a particle's position, calculates a force based on an imposed "virtual potential," and shifts the trap center to generate the desired force. We create virtual harmonic and double-well potentials to manipulate particles. The harmonic potentials can be chosen to be either weaker or stiffer than the underlying optical trap. Using this flexibility, we create an isotropic trap in three dimensions. Finally, we show that we can create a virtual double-well potential with fixed well separation and adjustable barrier height. These are accomplished at length scales down to 11 nm, a feat that is difficult or impossible to create with standard optical-tweezer techniques such as time sharing, dual beams, or spatial light modulators.

Abstract

This paper revisits the problem of optimal control law design for linear systems using the global optimal control framework introduced by Vadim Krotov. Krotov's approach is based on the idea of total decomposition of the original optimal control problem (OCP) with respect to time, by an $ad$ $hoc$ choice of the so-called Krotov's function or solving function, thereby providing sufficient conditions for the existence of global solution based on another optimization problem, which is completely equivalent to the original OCP. It is well known that the solution of this equivalent optimization problem is obtained using an iterative method. In this paper, we propose suitable Krotov's functions for linear quadratic OCP and subsequently, show that by imposing convexity condition on this equivalent optimization problem, there is no need to compute an iterative solution. We also give some key insights into the solution procedure of the linear quadratic OCP using the proposed methodology in contrast to the celebrated Calculus of Variations (CoV) and Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) equation based approach.

Abstract

We propose a method to prepare states of given quantized circulation in annular Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) confined in a ring trap using the method of phase imprinting without relying on a two-photon angular momentum transfer. The desired phase profile is imprinted on the atomic wave function using a short light pulse with a tailored intensity pattern generated with a Spatial Light Modulator. We demonstrate the realization of 'helicoidal' intensity profiles suitable for this purpose. Due to the diffraction limit, the theoretical steplike intensity profile is not achievable in practice. We investigate the effect of imprinting an intensity profile smoothed by a finite optical resolution onto the annular BEC with a numerical simulation of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. This allows us to optimize the intensity pattern for a given target circulation to compensate for the limited resolution.

Abstract

Agriculture is one of the prime sources of economic growth in Russia; the global apple production in 2019 was 87 million tons. Apple leaf diseases are the main reason for annual decreases in apple production, which creates huge economic losses. Automated methods for detecting apple leaf diseases are beneficial in reducing the laborious work of monitoring apple gardens and early detection of disease symptoms. This article proposes a multilayer convolutional neural network (MCNN), which is able to classify apple leaves into one of the following categories: apple scab, black rot, and apple cedar rust diseases using a newly created dataset. In this method, we used affine transformation and perspective transformation techniques to increase the size of the dataset. After that, OpenCV crop and histogram equalization method-based preprocessing operations were used to improve the proposed image dataset. The experimental results show that the system achieves 98.40% training accuracy and 98.47% validation accuracy on the proposed image dataset with a smaller number of training parameters. The results envisage a higher classification accuracy of the proposed MCNN model when compared with the other well-known state-of-the-art approaches. This proposed model can be used to detect and classify other types of apple diseases from different image datasets.

220. Dual-mode optical fiber-based tweezers for robust trapping and manipulation of absorbing particles in air

Abstract

We develop an optical tweezers system using a single dual-mode optical fiber where mesoscopic absorbing particles can be trapped in three dimensions and manipulated employing photophoretic forces. We generate a superposition of fundamental and first order Hermite-Gaussian beam modes by the simple innovation of coupling a laser into a commercial optical fiber designed to be single mode for a wavelength higher than that of the laser. We achieve robust trapping of the absorbing particles for hours using both the pure fundamental and superposition mode beams and attain large manipulation velocities of ~5 mm/s in the axial direction and ~0.75 mm/s in the radial direction. We then demonstrate that the superposition mode is more effective in trapping and manipulation compared to the fundamental mode by around 80%, which may be increased several times by the use of a pure first order Hermite-Gaussian mode. Abstract

A perfect blackbody can emit radiation of up to 480 Wm-2 at 60°C into the atmospheric window in the sky. However, designing such ARC (antireflective coating) for solar cells that can work as ARC and radiative coolers is challenging. A crystalline solar module having a single ARC of Si3N4 can emit radiation into the sky at about 84 Wm-2. In Contrast, at 35°C ambient temperature, our suggested ARC using Si3N4/SiO2/PDMS (polydimethylsiloxane) may emit around 346 Wm-2. This significant thermal emission lowers the solar module's temperature from 60.15°C to 48.55°C. This reduction in the solar module's temperature leads to an efficiency improvement of about 0.56%, and more importantly, the module's lifetime will increase by 25 years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Air ions are electrically charged particles in air. They are ubiquitous in the natural environment and affect the Earth's radiation budget by accelerating the formation and growth of new aerosol particles. Despite this, few datasets exist exploring these effects in the urban environment. A neutral cluster and air ion spectrometer was deployed in Leipzig, Germany, to measure the number size distribution of charged particles from 0.8 to 42 nm, between 27 July and 25 August 2022. Following previous analyses, charged particles were classified into small (0.8–1.6 nm), intermediate (1.6–7.5 nm), and large (7.5–22 nm) fractions by mass diameter, and their mean concentrations (sum of positive and negative polarities) during the campaign were 405, 71.6, and 415 cm -3 , respectively. The largest peaks in intermediate and large ions were explained by new particle formation (NPF), with intermediate ions correlating well with sulfuric acid dimer. Smaller morning and evening peaks were coincident with black carbon concentrations and attributed to primary emissions. NPF events, observed on 30 % of days, coincided with intense solar radiation and elevated sulfuric acid dimer. Small charged particles were primarily associated with radioactive decay and highest during the early hours, and they are unrelated to primary emissions or NPF. The apparent contributions of charged particles to 3 and 7.5 nm particle formation rates were 5.7 % and 12.7 %, respectively, with mean growth rates of 4.0 nm h -1 between 3–7.5 nm and 5.2 nm h -1 between 7.5 and 22 nm. The ratio of charged to total particle formation rates at 3 nm suggests a minor role for charged particles in NPF. We conclude that NPF is a primary source of > 3 nm ions in our data, with primary emissions being the major source in the absence of NPF. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Metal-based additive manufacturing (AM) displayed a revolutionary influence in the world of engineering and opened the doors to new opportunities for individuals as well as for industries. The design flexibility and high mechanical performance make this process more widespread and popular. Furthermore, the usage of minimal material with less wastage and the lowering of tooling expenses stands out as noteworthy benefits of the AM process. Nonetheless, an inherent limitation of AM printed materials includes issues related to the unique microstructure of AM parts, such as varying material densities, anisotropic properties and residual stresses. These factors can lead to unpredictable tool wear, poor surface finish and dimensional inaccuracies during machining operations. Additionally, the presence of hard inclusions or defects within the printed material can further exacerbate tool wear and increase machining difficulty. As a result, machining processes are often required to obtain the desired surface quality of the component. This study undertook a comprehensive and systematic review of the machinability of metal additive manufactured (AMed) components, contrasting them with wrought materials based on their response parameters. It investigated the turning, milling and drilling performances of AMed components, examining factors such as cutting forces, tool morphology, chip formation, hole quality, surface integrity, tool wear and temperature. This analysis encompassed diverse cutting conditions, building orientations and machining environments including flood, MQL, cryogenic cooling as well as AM parameters and post-heat treatments. Furthermore, this study places a significant emphasis on the sustainable attributes of the cutting fluids utilized in the machining of AM parts, alongside the overall sustainability of the manufactured components. It aims to pinpoint pivotal research findings and constraints while proposing avenues for future research endeavors. The main goal of this review is to furnish a comprehensive resource that consolidates knowledge regarding the surface quality and machinability of AMed metallic objects. Furthermore, it offers suggestions on machining strategies and insights into challenges and potentials related to machining AM parts. Additionally, it provides recommendations to enhance their machinability.
