The electronic structure of the magnetic semiconductor Ga$_{1-x}$Cr$_{x}$N and the effect of Si doping on it have been investigated by photoemission and soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy. We have confirmed that Cr in GaN is predominantly trivalent substituting for Ga, and that Cr 3$d$ states appear within the band gap of GaN just above the N 2$p$-derived valence-band maximum. As a result of Si doping, downward shifts of the core levels (except for Cr 2$p$) and the formation of new states near the Fermi level were observed, which we attribute to the upward chemical potential shift and the formation of a small amount of Cr$^{2+}$ species caused by the electron doping. The Liquid Xenon Gamma-Ray Imaging Telescope (LXeGRIT) is the first realization of a liquid xenon time projection chamber for Compton imaging of MeV gamma-ray sources in astrophysics. By measuring the energy deposit and the three spatial coordinates of individual gamma-ray scattering points, the location of the source in the sky is inferred with Compton kinematics reconstruction. The angular resolution is determined by the detector's energy and spatial resolutions, as well as by the separation in space between the first and second scattering. The imaging response of LXeGRIT was established with gamma-rays from radioactive sources, during calibration and integration at the Columbia Astrophysics Laboratory, prior to the 2000 balloon flight mission. The electronic structure of the Cr ions in the diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor Zn$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$Te ($x=0.03$ and 0.15) thin films has been investigated using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and photoemission spectroscopy (PES). Magnetic-field ($H$) and temperature ($T$) dependences of the Cr $2p$ XMCD spectra well correspond to the magnetization measured by a SQUID magnetometer. The line shape of the Cr $2p$ XMCD spectra is independent of $H$, $T$, and $x$, indicating that the ferromagnetism is originated from the same electronic states of the Cr ion. Cluster-model analysis indicates that although there are two or more kinds of Cr ions in the Zn$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$Te samples, the ferromagnetic XMCD signal is originated from Cr ions substituted for the Zn site. The Cr 3d partial density of states extracted using Cr $2p \to 3d$ resonant PES shows a broad feature near the top of the valence band, suggesting strong $s$,$p$-$d$ hybridization. No density of states is detected at the Fermi level, consistent with their insulating behavior. Based on these findings, we conclude that double exchange mechanism cannot explain the ferromagnetism in Zn$_{1-x}$Cr$_{x}$Te., Comment: Accepted for New Journal of Physics. We consider a cognitive radio scenario where a primary and a secondary user wish to communicate with their corresponding receivers simultaneously over frequency selective channels. Under realistic assumptions that the secondary transmitter has no side information about the primary's message and each transmitter knows only its local channels, we propose a Vandermonde precoder that cancels the interference from the secondary user by exploiting the redundancy of a cyclic prefix. The electronic structure of In$_{2-x}$V$_x$O$_3$ ($x=0.08$) has been investigated using photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The V $2p$ core-level PES and XAS spectra revealed trivalent electronic state of the V ion, consistent with the substitution of the V ion for the In site. The V 3d partial density of states obtained by the resonant PES technique showed a sharp peak above the O $2p$ band. While the O $1s$ XAS spectrum of In$_{2-x}$V$_x$O$_3$ was similar to that of In$_2$O$_3$, there were differences in the In $3p$ and 3d XAS spectra between V-doped and pure In$_2$O$_3$. The observations give clear evidence for hybridization between the In conduction band and the V 3d orbitals in In$_{2-x}$V$_x$O$_3$., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The magnetic properties of as-grown Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As have been investigated by the systematic measurements of temperature and magnetic field dependent soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The {\it intrinsic} XMCD intensity at high temperatures obeys the Curie-Weiss law, but residual spin magnetic moment appears already around 100 K, significantly above Curie temperature ($T_C$), suggesting that short-range ferromagnetic correlations are developed above $T_C$. The present results also suggest that antiferromagnetic interaction between the substitutional and interstitial Mn (Mn$_{int}$) ions exists and that the amount of the Mn$_{int}$ affects $T_C$., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The electronic structure of Li-doped Ni$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$O has been investigated using photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The Ni $2p$ core-level PES and XAS spectra were not changed by Li doping. In contrast, the Fe$^{3+}$ intensity increased with Li doping relative to the Fe$^{2+}$ intensity. However, the increase of Fe$^{3+}$ is only $\sim 5%$ of the doped Li content, suggesting that most of the doped holes enter the O $2p$ and/or the charge-transferred configuration Ni $3d^8\underline{L}$. The Fe 3d partial density of states and the host valence-band emission near valence-band maximum increased with Li content, consistent with the increase of electrical conductivity. Based on these findings, percolation of bound magnetic polarons is proposed as an origin of the ferromagnetic behavior., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We have performed a depth profile study of thermally diffused Mn/GaAs (001) interfaces using photoemission spectroscopy combined with Ar$^+$-ion sputtering. We found that Mn ion was thermally diffused into the deep region of the GaAs substrate and completely reacted with GaAs. In the deep region, the Mn 2$p$ core-level and Mn 3$d$ valence-band spectra of the Mn/GaAs (001) sample heated to 600 $^{\circ}$C were similar to those of Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$As, zinc-blende-type MnAs dots, and/or interstitial Mn in tetrahedrally coordinated by As atoms, suggesting that the Mn 3$d$ states were essentially localized but were hybridized with the electronic states of the host GaAs. By means of photoemission and x-ray absorption spectroscopy, we have studied the electronic structure of (Ni,Zn,Fe,Ti)$_{3}$O$_{4}$ thin films, which exhibits a cluster glass behavior with a spin-freezing temperature $T_f$ of $\sim 230$ K and photo-induced magnetization (PIM) below $T_f$. The Ni and Zn ions were found to be in the divalent states. Most of the Fe and Ti ions in the thin films were trivalent (Fe$^{3+}$) and tetravalent (Ti$^{4+}$), respectively. While Ti doping did not affect the valence states of the Ni and Zn ions, a small amount of Fe$^{2+}$ ions increased with Ti concentration, consistent with the proposed charge-transfer mechanism of PIM., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We extend the 5-dimensional Galilean space-time to a (5+1) Galilean space-time in order to define a parity transformation in a covariant manner. This allows us to discuss the discrete symmetries in the Galilean space-time, which is embedded in the (5+1) Minkowski space-time. We give an 8-dimensional realization of the Clifford algebra in the 5-dimensional Galilean space-time by using a dimensional reduction from the $(5+1)$ Minkowski space-time to the $(4+1)$ Minkowski space-time which encompasses the Galilean space-time. A set of solutions of the Dirac-type equation in the 5-dimensional Galilean space-time is obtained, based on the Pauli representation of $8\times 8$ gamma matrices. We have performed x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and valence-band photoemission studies of the diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor Zn$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$Te. XMCD signals due to ferromagnetism were observed at the Cr 2p absorption edge. Comparison with atomic multiplet calculations suggests that the magnetically active component of the Cr ion was divalent under the tetrahedral crystal field with tetragonal distortion along the crystalline a-, b-, and c-axes. In the valence-band spectra, spectral weight near the Fermi level was strongly suppressed, suggesting the importance of Jahn-Teller effect and the strong Coulomb interaction between the Cr 3d electrons.

Epitaxial Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 thin films were prepared on Nb-doped SrTiO3 (100)substrates by the pulsed laser deposition technique, and were studied by measuring the Ti 2p - 3d resonant photoemission spectra in the valence-band region as a function of film thickness, both at room temperature and low temperature. Our results demonstrated an abrupt variation in the spectral structures between 2.8 nm (~7 monolayers) and 2.0 nm (~5 monolayers) Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 films, suggesting that there exists a critical thickness for phase change in the range of 2.0 nm to 2.8 nm. With high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy measurements, the density of states (DOS) near the Fermi level ($E_\mathrm{F}$) of double perovskite Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$ having different degrees of Fe/Mo antisite disorder has been investigated with varying temperature. The DOS near $E_\mathrm{F}$ showed a systematic depletion with increasing degree of disorder, and recovered with increasing temperature. Altshuler-Aronov (AA) theory of disordered metals well explains the dependences of the experimental results. Scaling analysis of the spectra provides experimental indication for the functional form of the AA DOS singularity., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We have investigated the magnetic properties of a GaN/Ga1-xMnxN (x = 0.1) digital ferromagnetic heterostructure (DFH) showing ferromagnetic behavior using soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The Mn L2,3-edge XAS spectra were similar to those of Ga1-xMnxN random alloy thin films, indicating a substitutional doping of high concentration Mn into GaN. From the XMCD measurements, it was revealed that paramagnetic and ferromagnetic Mn atoms coexisted in the Ga1-xMnxN digital layers. The ferromagnetic moment per Mn atom estimated from XMCD agreed well with that estimated from SQUID measurements. From these results, we conclude that the ferromagnetic behavior of the GaN/Ga1-xMnxN DFH sample arises only from substitutional Mn2+ ions in the Ga1-xMnxN digital layers and not from ferromagnetic precipitates. We have performed an $in$-$situ$ depth profile study of Mn-doped GaN prepared by a low temperature thermal diffusion method using photoemission and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. It was revealed from the core-level photoemission measurements that Mn ions are diffused into a deep ($\sim$ 70 \AA) region of the GaN substrates and that the line shapes of Mn 3$d$ partial density of states obtained by resonant photoemission measurements was close to that of Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$N thin films grown by molecular-beam epitaxy. From x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Mn $L$-edge, it was revealed that the doped Mn ions were in the divalent Mn$^{2+}$ state and primarily paramagnetic. In magnetization measurements, weak hysteresis was detected in samples prepared using $p$-type GaN substrates while samples using $n$-type GaN substrates showed only paramagnetism., Comment: 19pages, 13figures

LXeGRIT - Liquid Xenon Gamma-Ray Imaging Telescope - is the first prototype of a Compton telescope for \MeV \g-ray astrophysics based on a LXe time projection chamber. One of the most relevant figures of merit for a Compton telescope is the detection efficiency for \g-rays, which depends on diverse contributions such as detector geometry and passive materials, trigger efficiency, dead time, etc. A detailed study of the efficiency of the LXeGRIT instrument, based both on laboratory measurements and Monte Carlo simulations, is presented in this paper., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures; submitted to NIMA

We performed a soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) study of a Zn$_{1-x}$V$_x$O thin film which showed small ferromagnetic moment. Field and temperature dependences of V 2$p$ XMCD signals indicated the coexistence of Curie-Weiss paramagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and possibly ferromagnetic V ions, quantitatively consistent with the magnetization measurements. We attribute the paramagnetic signal to V ions substituting Zn sites which are somewhat elongated along the c-axis.

We report the crystal structure and magnetic properties of Zn1-xCoxO nanoparticles synthesized by heating metal acetates in organic solvent. The nanoparticles were crystallized in wurtzite ZnO structure after annealing in air and in a forming gas (Ar95%+H5%). The X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) data for different Co content show clear evidence for the Co+2 ions in tetrahedral symmetry, indicating the substitution of Co+2 in ZnO lattice. However samples with x=0.08 and higher cobalt content also indicate the presence of Co metal clusters. Only those samples annealed in the reducing atmosphere of the forming gas, and that showed the presence of oxygen vacancies, exhibited ferromagnetism at room temperature. The air annealed samples remained non-magnetic down to 77K. The essential ingredient in achieving room temperature ferromagnetism in these Zn1-xCoxO nanoparticles was found to be the presence of additional carriers generated by the presence of the oxygen vacancies., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Nanotechnology IOP

We report on the results of x-ray absorption (XAS), x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), and photoemission experiments on {\it n}-type Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O ($x=0.05$) thin film, which shows ferromagnetism at room temperature. The XMCD spectra show a multiplet structure, characteristic of the Co$^{2+}$ ion tetrahedrally coordinated by oxygen, suggesting that the ferromagnetism comes from Co ions substituting the Zn site in ZnO. The magnetic field and temperature dependences of the XMCD spectra imply that the non-ferromagnetic Co ions are strongly coupled antiferromagnetically with each other., Comment: 5pages, 4figures

We have measured the electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power, Hall coefficient, and magnetoresistance (MR) on single crystals of PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$, LaOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ and NdOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$. All the transport properties in PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ are similar to those in LaOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ and NdOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ at high temperatures, indicating the localized character of 4$f$-electrons. The transverse MR both in LaOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ and PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ tends to saturate for wide field directions, indicating these compounds to be uncompensated metals with no open orbit. We have determined the phase diagram of the field induced ordered phase by the MR measurement for all the principle field directions, which indicates an unambiguous evidence for the $\Gamma_{\rm 1}$ singlet crystalline electric field ground state., Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures, to appear in Physical Review B

We have investigated the electrical resistivity of the heavy fermion superconductor PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ in the mixed state. We found unusual double minima in the flux-flow resistivity as a function of magnetic field below the upper critical field for the first time, indicating double peaks in the pinning force density ($F_{\rm P}$). Estimated $F_{\rm P}$ at the peak exhibits apparent dependence on applied field direction; composed of two-fold and four-fold symmetries mimicking the reported angular dependence of thermal conductivity ($\kappa$). The result is discussed in correlation with the double step superconducting (SC) transition in the specific heat and the multiple SC-phases inferred from the angular dependence of $\kappa$., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures, to appear in J. We have studied the electronic structure of the diluted magnetic semiconductor Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$N ($x$ = 0.0, 0.02 and 0.042) grown on Sn-doped $n$-type GaN using photoemission and soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Mn $L$-edge x-ray absorption have indicated that the Mn ions are in the tetrahedral crystal field and that their valence is divalent. Upon Mn doping into GaN, new state were found to form within the band gap of GaN, and the Fermi level was shifted downward. Satellite structures in the Mn 2$p$ core level and the Mn 3$d$ partial density of states were analyzed using configuration-interaction calculation on a MnN$_{4}$ cluster model. The deduced electronic structure parameters reveal that the $p$-$d$ exchange coupling in Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$N is stronger than that in Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$As., Comment: 6pages, 10figures. We have measured both magnetoresistance and Hall effect in CeOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ to clarify the large resistivity state ascribed to the Kondo insulating one and the origin of the phase transition near 0.9 K reported in the specific heat measurement. We found unusual temperature ($T$) dependence both in the electrical resistivity $\rho\sim T^{-1/2}$ and the Hall coefficient $R_{\rm H}\sim T^{\rm -1}$ over the wide temperature range of about two order of magnitude below $\sim30$ K, which can be explained as a combined effect of the temperature dependences of carrier density and carrier scattering by spin fluctuation. An anomaly related with the phase transition has been clearly observed in the transport properties, from which the $H-T$ phase diagram is determined up to 14 T. Taking into account the small entropy change, the phase transition is most probably the spin density wave one. Both the electrical resistivity and Hall resistivity at 0.3 K is largely suppressed about an order of magnitude by magnetic fields above $\sim3$ T, suggesting a drastic change of electronic structure and a suppression of spin fluctuations under magnetic fields., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

The energy spectrum of superfluid turbulence is studied numerically by solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We introduce the dissipation term which works only in the scale smaller than the healing length, to remove short wavelength excitations which may hinder the cascade process of quantized vortices in the inertial range. Bell's inequality violation (BIQV) for correlations of polarization is studied for a {\it product} state of two two-mode squeezed vacuum (TMSV) states. The violation allowed is shown to attain its maximal limit for all values of the squeezing parameter, $\zeta$. We show via an explicit example that a state whose entanglement is not maximal allow maximal BIQV. LXeGRIT is the first prototype of a novel concept of Compton telescope, based on the complete 3-dimensional reconstruction of the sequence of interactions of individual gamma rays in one position sensitive detector. This balloon-borne telescope consists of an unshielded time projection chamber with an active volume of 400 cm$^2 \times 7$ cm filled with high purity liquid xenon. Four VUV PMTs detect the fast xenon scintillation light signal, providing the event trigger. 124 wires and 4 anodes detect the ionization signals, providing the event spatial coordinates and total energy. In the period 1999 -- 2001, LXeGRIT has been extensively tested both in the laboratory and at balloon altitude, and its response in the MeV region has been thoroughly characterized. Here we summarize some of the results on pre-flight calibration, event reconstruction techniques, and performance during a 27 hour balloon flight on October 4 -- 5. LXeGRIT is the first prototype of a novel Compton telescope for MeV gamma-ray astrophysics based on a Liquid Xenon Time Projection Chamber (LXeTPC), sensitive in the energy band of 0.15-10 MeV. In this homogeneous, 3D position sensitive detector, gamma rays with at least two interactions in the sensitive volume of 2800 cm$^{3}$, are imaged as in a standard Compton telescope. Gamma-rays with a single interaction cannot be imaged and constitute a background which can be easily identified and rejected. Charged particles and localized beta-particles background is also easily suppressed based on the TPC localization capability with millimeter resolution. A measurement of the total gamma-ray background rate in near space conditions and the background rejection power of the LXeTPC was a primary goal of the LXeGRIT balloon flight program. We present here a preliminary analysis addressing this question, based on balloon flight data acquired during the Oct 4-5, 2000 LXeGRIT balloon flight from Ft. Sumner, NM. In this long duration (27 hr) balloon experiment, the LXeGRIT TPC was not surrounded by any gamma-ray or charged particle shield. Single site events and charged particles were mostly rejected on-line at the first and second trigger level. The remaining count rate of single-site \g-ray events, at an average atmospheric depth of 3.2 g cm$^{-2}$, is consistent with that expected from atmospheric and diffuse gamma-ray background, taking into account the instrument mass model and response., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, SPIE 2002 Proceedings, Conf. XENON is a novel liquid xenon experiment concept for a sensitive dark matter search using a 1-tonne active target, distributed in an array of ten independent time projection chambers. The design relies on the simultaneous detection of ionization and scintillation signals in liquid xenon, with the goal of extracting as much information as possible on an event-by-event basis, while maintaining most of the target active. XENON is expected to have effective and redundant background identification and discrimination power, higher than 99.5%, and to achieve a very low threshold, on the order of 4 keV visible recoil energy. Based on this expectation and the 1-tonne mass of active xenon, we project a sensitivity of 0.0001 events/kg/day, after 3 yr operation in an appropriate underground location. We have developed a Lorentz angle measurement system for cool gas mixtures in the course of our R&D for a proposed JLC central drift chamber (JLC-CDC). The measurement system is characterized by the use of two laser beams to produce primary electrons and flash ADCs to read their signals simultaneously. With this new system, we have measured Lorentz angles for CO2/isobutane gas mixtures with different proportions (95:5, 90:10, and 85:15), varying drift field from 0.6 to 2.0 kV/cm and magnetic field up to 1.5 T. The results of the measurement are in good agreement with GARFIELD/MAGBOLTZ simulations., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures

The first search for the decay K^+ -> pi^+ pi^0 nu nubar has been performed with the E787 detector at BNL. Based on zero events observed in the kinematical search region defined by 90 MeV/c < P_{pi^+} < 188 MeV/c and 135 MeV < E_{pi^0} < 180 MeV, an upper limit B(K^+ -> pi^+ pi^0 nu nubar) < 4.3 x 10^{-5} at 90% confidence level is established., Comment: 10 pages, Latex, 5 figures, to be submitted to Phys.
