Die ausWestafrika stammende Ölpalme (Elaeis guineensis Jacq) ist zur populärsten Kulturpflanze in Südostasien geworden. Als Haupterzeugnisse dieser Pflanze gelten die Öle der Früchte und der Fruchtkerne. Die weltweite Nachfrage nach diesen beiden Haupterzeugnissen nimmt sehr rasch zu. Ursache hierfür ist die breite Anwendungspalette dieser Pflanzenöle, wie z.B. Bratöl, ölbasierte Chemikalien und ölbasierte Nahrungsmittel, Kosmetika, Waschmittel, Biobrennstoff usw. Indonesien und Malaysia sind die Hauptproduzenten und Hauptlieferanten solcher Produkte und decken über 85% des weltweiten Bedarfs. Mit Extensivierung der Ölpalmplantagen sehen sich die Erzeugerländer zunehmend mit ernstzunehmenden Umweltprobleme konfrontiert, da nach Erreichen der wirtschaftlichen Lebenspanne (Umtriebszeit) von 25 Jahren große Mengen an festen, biologischen Abfallstoffe bei der Neubegründung der Bestände anfallen. So sollen z.B. im Jahre 2010 laut Vorhersagen mehr als 20 Mill. World demand of two main products from this crop (e.g. crude palm oil and palm kernel oil) increases very rapidly, due to very wide ranges use of these vegetable oils for industrial purposes, such as fried oil, oleo-chemical and -food, cosmetics, detergent, biofuel and etc. Indonesia and Malaysia are the main producers and supplying more than 85% of world consumption. On the other hand, due to the economic life span of this popular crop (25 years), the producer countries have been facing a serious environmental problems concerning to the solid biowaste handling of oil palm industry, particularly the oil palm trunk after replanting activity. Technical complexities and the high cost of satellite images have hindered the adoption of remote sensing technology and tools for nature conservation works in Ethiopia as in many developing countries. The terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems in Abijjata Shala Lakes National Park (ASLNP) and the Important Bird Areas (IBAs) around the park are considered to be one of the most important home ranges for birds. However, little is known about the effect of land use/land cover (LULC) dynamics, due to lack of technical know how and logistical problems. However, it has been shown in this study that sophisticated image management works are not always relevant. Instead a simple method of utilizing the thermal band has been demonstrated. A new approach of long-term dynamics analysis method has also been suggested. A successful classification of images was achieved after such simple enhancement tests. It has been discovered that, there were more active LULC change processes in the area in the first study period (1973 to 1986) than during the second study period (1986-2000). In the first period nearly half of the landscape underwent land cover change processes with more than 26% of the entire landscape experiencing forest or land degradation. In the second period the extent of the change process was limited to only 1/3 of the total area with a smaller amount of degradation processes than before. During the entire study period, agriculture was responsible for the loss of more than 4/5 of the total terrestrial productive ecosystem. More than 37.6% of the total park area has been experiencing this loss for the past 3 decades. Only 1/5 of this area has a chance to revive, the remaining has undergone a permanent degradation. Sundarban Reserved Forest in Bangladesh is playing a significant role in local and national economy and is providing protection to the coastline as well as to the indigenous people. During the past decades and also in recent time this forest was heavily disturbed by human intervention in many aspects. As a consequence the resources of the forest are fragmenting, shrinking and declining, which in turn leads to an increasing failure of satisfying increasing demands both at local and national levels. Therefore accurate and continuously updated spatial information is needed for optimising forest management and environmental planning on both levels to support the fulfilment of urgent needs of sustainability of the forest. Considering the specific topography and the poor accessibility of the forest versus the task of collecting information, remote sensing is an attractive, if not the only means of obtaining sound full-coverage spatial information on forest cover of Sundarban. This research used medium resolution Landsat ETM data of November 2000 and Landsat TM data of January 1989 to assess and monitor the forest for 1. Identification of the operational tools for mapping and monitoring the forest as well as on the examination of the reliability of the application of multitemporal satellite remote sensing data for building spatial databases on forest cover in Sundarban. 2. Based on the existing management plan of the forest as well as the spectral properties of Landsat ETM imagery a level III classification system was developed. 3. This classification strategy was tested by applying several methods to achieve the classification result with the highest accuracy and thus to build the most reliable methodology for mapping forest cover in Sundarban. 4. Forest cover change was assessed for the period of eleven years. Significant changes have been observed due to illegal removal of trees from the forest although a governmental moratorium on banning timber extraction exists since, Das Schutzgebiet des Sundarban Mangrovenwaldes in Bangladesh spielt eine entscheidende Rolle in Hinsicht auf nationale und lokale sozio-ökonomische und sozio-ökologische Aspekte. Das Waldgebiet stabilisiert nicht nur die Küstenlinie, sondern schützt auch die Bevölkerung vor den Einflüssen von Flutkatastrophen. Durch menschlichen Einfluss wurde die Region während der letzten Jahrzehnte mehr und mehr unmittelbar gestört. Der Rückgang des Ertrags an Ressourcen aus dem Wald führte zu wachsender Unzufriedenheit in der von diesen Nutzungs-möglichkeiten abhängigen Bevölkerung. Um eine Optimierung des Waldmanagements durchführen zu können, werden kontinuierliche und genaue raumbezogene Daten benötigt. Betrachtet man die spezifische Topographie und die schlechte Zugänglichkeit der Waldgebiete, so bietet die Fernerkundung eine attraktive Möglichkeit, raumbezogene Informationen für die großen Flächen des Sundurban Mangrovenwaldes zu erfassen. Zur Analyse und Überwachung der Waldgebiete wurden zwei Satellitenbild-Datensätze mit mittlerer Auflösung verwendet, und zwar Landsat ETM Daten aus dem Jahre 2000 (November) sowie Landsat TM Daten aus dem Jahre 1989 (Januar). Die zentralen Aktivitäten im Rahmen der Bearbeitung der Dissertation beziehen sich auf 1. die Identifikation der notwendigen Werkzeuge für eine erfolgreiche Kartierung und Überwachung der Waldgebiete sowie Untersuchung der Zuverlässigkeit multi-temporaler Fernerkundungsdaten für den Aufbau einer Datenbasis für die Kartierung von Waldbedeckungsarten im Untersuchungsgebiet des Sunderban Mangroven-waldes, 2. die Entwicklung eines Klassifikationssystems nach dem USGS-Schlüssel (Auflösungsebene III) auf Grundlage des existierenden Managementplanes und der spektralen Qualität der Landsat ETM Satellitenbilddaten, 3. den Test der Klassifikationsstrategie durch Adaption unterschiedlicher Methoden und Optimierung in bezug auf Erzielung eines Ergebnisses in maximal erreichbarer Genauigkeit als Ausgangspunkt für den Aufbau einer

Bezüglich des Waldes hat sich in den letzten Jahren seitens der Politik und Wirtschaft ein steigender Informationsbedarf entwickelt. Zur Bereitstellung dieses Bedarfes stellt die Fernerkundung ein wichtiges Hilfsmittel dar, mit dem sich flächendeckende Datengrundlagen erstellen lassen. Die k-nächsten-Nachbarn-Methode (kNN-Methode), die terrestrische Aufnahmen mit Fernerkundungsdaten kombiniert, stellt eine Möglichkeit dar, diese Datengrundlage mit Hilfe der Fernerkundung zu verwirklichen. Deshalb beschäftigt sich die vorliegende Dissertation eingehend mit der kNN-Methode. An Hand der zwei Merkmale Grundfläche (metrische Daten) und Totholz (kategoriale Daten) wurden umfangreiche Berechnungen durchgeführt, wobei verschiedenste Variationen der kNN-Methode berücksichtigt wurden. Diese Variationen umfassen verschiedenste Einstellungen der Distanzfunktion, der Wichtungsfunktion und der Anzahl k-nächsten Nachbarn. Als Fernerkundungsdatenquellen kamen Landsat- und Hyperspektraldaten zum Einsatz, die sich sowohl von ihrer spektralen wie auch ihrer räumlichen Auflösung unterscheiden. Mit Hilfe von Landsat-Szenen eines Gebietes von verschiedenen Zeitpunkten wurde außerdem der multitemporale Ansatz berücksichtigt. Die terrestrische Datengrundlage setzt sich aus Feldaufnahmen mit verschiedenen Aufnahmedesigns zusammen, wobei ein wichtiges Kriterium die gleichmäßige Verteilung von Merkmalswerten (z.B. Grundflächenwerten) über den Merkmalsraum darstellt. Für die Durchführung der Berechnungen wurde ein Programm mit Visual Basic programmiert, welches mit der Integrierung aller Funktionen auf der Programmoberfläche eine benutzerfreundliche Bedienung ermöglicht. Die pixelweise Ausgabe der Ergebnisse mündete in detaillierte Karten und die Verifizierung der Ergebnisse wurde mit Hilfe des prozentualen Root Mean Square Error und der Bootstrap-Methode durchgeführt. Die erzielten Genauigkeiten für das Merkmal Grundfläche liegen zwischen 35 % und 67 % (Landsat) bzw. zwischen 65 % und 67 % (H, Mapping forest variables and associated characteristics is fundamental for forest planning and management. The following work describes the k-nearest neighbors (kNN) method for improving estimations and to produce maps for the attributes basal area (metric data) and deadwood (categorical data). Several variations within the kNN-method were tested, including: distance metric, weighting function and number of neighbors. As sources of remote sensing Landsat TM satellite images and hyper spectral data were used, which differ both from their spectral as well as their spatial resolutions. Two Landsat scenes from the same area acquired September 1999 and 2000 regard multiple approaches. The field data for the kNN- method comprise tree field measurements which were collected from the test site Tharandter Wald (Germany). The three field data collections are characterized by three different designs. For the kNN calculation a program with integration all kNN functions were developed. The relative root mean square errors (RMSE) and the Bootstrap method were evaluated in order to find optimal parameters. The estimation accuracy for the attribute basal area is between 35 % and 67 % (Landsat) and 65 % and 67 % (HyMapTM). For the attribute deadwood is the accuracy between 60 % and 73 % (Landsat) and 60 % and 63 % (HyMapTM). Recommendations for applying the kNN method for mapping and regional estimation are provided.

Forest-cover in the tropics is changing rapidly due to indiscriminate removal of timber from many localities. The main focus of the study is to develop an operational tool for monitoring biomass and carbon pool of tropical forest ecosystems. The method was applied to a test site of Bangladesh. The research used Landsat ETM+, Landsat TM and IRS pan images of 2001, 1992 and 1999 respectively. Geometrically corrected Landsat ETM+ imagery was obtained from USGS and adjusted to the field using GPS. Historical images were corrected using image-to-image registration. Atmospheric correction was done by modified dark object subtraction method. Stratified sampling design based on the remote sensing image was applied for assessing the above-ground biomass and carbon content of the study area. Field sampling was done during 2002-2003. Dbh and height of all the trees inside the sample plots were measured. Field measurement was finally converted to carbon content using allometric relations. Three different methods: stratification, regression and k-nearest neighbors were tested for combining remote sensing image information and field-based terrestrial carbon pool. Additional field sampling was conducted during 2003-2004 for testing the accuracy. Finally regression method was selected. The amount of carbon released and sequestrated from the ecosystem was estimated. The application of the developed method would be quite useful for understating the terrestrial carbon dynamics and global climate change.

Humidity inside the collectors is one factor that can be minimised to keep the most favourable microclimatic condition for the internal materials of the collector. This microclimate inside the collector is an important factor in determining the service lifetime of an absorber coating. During the design of the collector, the location and size of ventilation holes, properties of the insulation materials and dimension of the solar collector box are parameters that have to be taken into account for the optimisation in order to achieve the most favourable microclimate to prevent corrosion.Simulation of the microclimate in solar thermal collectors can be a valuable tool for optimisation of the collector with respect to ventilation. A computer model has been established for fulfilling this. By using this tool the producers can be advised whether their solar collectors ought to be additionally tightened, or whether more ventilation openings should be made and what influence the insulation material has. Guidelines for collector designers are proposed. The design guidelines provide some suggestions to be considered during the design of solar collectors.The work was carried out within the framework of the working group Materials in Solar Thermal Collectors of the International Energy Agency-Solar Heating and Cooling Programme.
